Official Publication of the Triunfo YMCA Indian Guides & Princesses, Papooses, and Trailblaze r s ! Trail Mix February, 2006 Guide Your Child’s Adventure!! http://www.ymcasmokesignal.com Order of the White Buffalo: How are the Tribes Doing? Message from Federation Chief John Gettings Magic and Movie Night!! See Inside for Details p m : Ca ! e idnter ling s In Wi Bow n B o o dT f n I an H From your Federation Chiefs ow How! Its time to load up the car with sleeping bags, pillows, cold weather gear, sleds, and shovels as we embark on a journey with our children/tribes to the great white north. Winter Camp, a great experience for all, and one that all will talk about for years to come. Just ask one of the Dads who was an Indian Guide or look at the plaques on the wall at the lodge. This is a ritual that has gone on for many years, and everyone will contribute to the good times we will have.. Especially, Saturday night when all tribes will perform skits, one better than the next, followed by a slide show of many happy memories.. 2005/6 Federation Chiefs Francesca and John Gettings Then in March we will have our first annual Texas Holdem fund raiser and the Dads will take a moment to raise a little money for a good cause, and have a little fun then the following week end we will have our annual Magic & Movie night at the Lindero Canyon Gymnasium. Bring your air mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows and get ready for a great night of fun and laughter. Come April we will be off to the Races at Irwindale Speed Way, then there is the Pancake Carnival and Rocket Launch at Oak park High School. Wow, what an action packed month. Look forward to seeing everyone having fun. Wakonda!! Your Federation Chiefs, Francesca and John Gettings Flying Dolphin and Big Buck Guides, Princesses and Papooses go Bowling!! The bowling shoes have been returned, the pins have all been reset and we all had a great time at this years bowling event! The YMCA, the Woodlake Bowl, Michael D’s and I thank everyone who came out this year with their daughters and son’s to bowl and spend time with each other. We had an excellent turnout, there were tons of strikes, lots of cheering (teasing in some cases) and all kinds of smiles in every lane. This event helps bring the dad’s closer to our children in a fun and action filled way and my thanks go to the YMCA for organizing this event. Order of the White Buffalo Due to popular demand we will indeed be offering recognition for not only Order of the White Buffalo, but for Tribe of the Year as well. The standings are listed below. Participation in the Order of the White Buffalo program is quick, easy, and painless. Have your tribal chief log on to the same website at which you submit your tribal photos, drop down to the third section where it says, Enter Your Tribe’s Coup Points (for Order of the White Buffalo), log in, and take it from there. It is just a matter of clicking on a few drop-down boxes here and there and you are done! Only 800 points are needed to obtain White Buffalo status and there are a few tribes close to achieving that already with points included only through December. Even if you are starting now, it is not too late to earn the order of the White Buffalo for your tribe with what remains this year. The Song of the Grasshopper Saturday, February 18th 2:00 & 4:00 Sadly, due to scheduleing conflicts within our Indian Guide program and an overall lack of interest both within our YMCA and the Conejo and Simi Y’s, this year’s theater show has been canceled. We are currently looking into getting The Pet Circus back next year for an encore performance since it was so wildly popular last year. TrailBlazers Bowl with the Stars It’s that time again! Time to don those cool bowling shoes and shirts and head off to Cosmic Bowling. This year’s event will be held on February 25th at Brunswick Bowl in Simi Valley. We’ll be taking over the entire place from 3-5 pm, raising the bumpers, turning on the blacklights, and blasting the tunes while we try to knock down the pins! We hope to see you there!. If you have any questions, please contact Event Boss Neil Ticktin at ymca@ticktin.com Guides & Princesses Winter Camp, 2006 By the time you are reading this, Winter Camp may or may not have happened yet, but I am compelled to relay to you what has or is going to happen to those lucky individuals who go. You see, like the TV show Raven, I have visions of the future and recently I saw something that could only be described as “Wow!” It was Friday night, a clear sky, a nip in the air and patches of snow on the ground. Inside the main lodge, hot pizza was available and many were gathered in front of a large TV screen. The Hopi’s were there, as well as the Wild Horses, the Sioux, the Wolfpack, Ahwahnee, Maricopa, and Miwok tribes. As the night wore on, more people kept showing up and there was a warm feeling of camaraderie as they filled themselves on pizza and hot chocolate and watched a bunch of different children’s shows from a time before cable and satellite, like H.R Puffenstuff, “Lidsville”, Sigmund the Sea Monster, and the Bugaloos. The following day, the camp was a buzz of activity. People were sledding, creating snow sculptures, and rehearsing for their campfire skit. Everywhere dads and kids were smiling and laughing. Eggs and sausage were served for breakfast, hamburgers for lunch, and BBQ chicken for dinner. MMMM. Although everyone was having a really good time, the big highlight came at the campfire. Chief Rocking Dolphin started the campfire by playing the National Anthem on his guitar, then he had everyone warm up their voices by singing “We Will Rock You”. Awards were handed out to all the tribes that made snow sculptures and then each of the tribes performed their tribal cheer and a skit. Next, came an invigorating “Roostasha” that even included a new step that only the most experienced Roostashaers could handle. Usually, campfire’s end after “Roostasha”, but not this one. Instead Rocky Red shouted “Food Fight!” and all the tribes threw marshmallows at each other. Chief Rocking Dolphin ended the campfire by singing “It’s a Wonderful World”, which he dedicated to his son Rocky Red. After the campfire everyone ate ice cream and watched a slide show of pictures of all the tribes, that Jeff Alkazian put together. That’s where the vision ends. Let’s see if it comes true.
