Osaka city is said to have a total of about 80 Danjiri; carts which carry portable shrines and are used in traditional festivals throughout the city. Hideyoshi Toyotomi left behind a glorious treasure and a landmark for Osaka City: Osaka Castle. During the construction of the castle many ‘Syura’ carts were used. The design was said to be a prototype for the Danjiri: carts which carry portable shrines and are used in traditional festivals throughout the city. The city is said to have about 80 ornately designed Danjiri in total; The Danjiri Matsuri in Osaka Castle (lit. Danjiri ‘festival’) currently brings together 20 of these carts to the base of Osaka Castle where they are said to have their roots.
