We are inching towards our target of a double digit growth on topline and a 12.5% of minimum OpEBIT for 2016. The strongest contributions came from our Distribution Channel Sales and TM-Industry Business. The highlight of this positive result is the fact that we have achieved this with our new found direction of "Less is More"! Change is the only constant and I am really proud that each of our team members has adopted the change with positive spirit which has now started to show in our results. We still have challenges to overcome, further simplification in our processes to be achieved and of course a further journey to take till we reach our targets to take the company to the next level of profitable growth. I reiterate once more our three major goals: Goal 1: To grow topline double digit (>10%) Goal 2: To be a double digit OpEBIT company (>15%) Goal 3: To achieve sales cost at 7% of the total sales. Let's continue with the momentum and the success will be ours, my friends. The third edition of Sika Spirit magazine with the theme of sustainability could not have a better time to be released with our vision on a sustainable and profitable growth strongly set in 2016 and beyond. I am sure all of you will come to know about a lot of international and internal best demonstrated practices at local level through this edition and I encourage you to share the same with our extended stakeholders like key customers, distributors, applicators and vendors. I encourage all of you to take a review of the past six months and self assess what we did right and what could be done better in the coming six months for yourself and the company. Please share your inputs and suggestions with your line managers and myself so that we can work as a team to ensure the hard earned momentum is maintained. We have two more quarters to go and I am more than confident to lead this great team to reach greater heights in 2016. Thanks for your continued support and energy. While we keep working smarter, harder and with full energy towards achieving our goals, please don't miss out on the monsoon breaks and also do take care of the health of yourself and family members during the monsoon period. With warm regards, Arijit Basu Managing Director Sika India Pvt. Ltd. 3 SIKA @ GOTTHARD: SUSTAINING FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. AND COUNTING... June 1 marks the official inauguration of the world's longest rail tunnel: the 57 km-long Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland! Sika's front-line technologies and construction expertise played a crucial role in the successful completion of this very important infrastructure project. Gotthard tunnel passes through one of the highest Alpine massifs. It runs some 2,000 meters below the mountain summits. The new rail section of the tunnel is all set to reduce the time that massive freight and modern high-speed trains take to travel from Zurich to Milan by around one hour. RELIABILITY AND LONGEVITY BUILT ON SIKA'S TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW The client demanded products with extremely long service life and no significant maintenance. In the course of an elaborate prequalification process, Sika fulfilled all the stringent requirements. The high-grade shotcrete used to support the tunnel excavation served as the base for the Sikaplan® and Sarnafil® waterproof membranes. The concrete lining was then placed using Sika admixtures so as to achieve the high degree of precision required for the tunnel surface geometry. A RECORD BREAKER FOR SIKA Since the start of preliminary testing in 1992, Sika's employees have worked for more than 210,000 hours on this once-in-alifetime project! Approximately, 20,000 tonnes of concrete admixtures were used for the concreting works. The tunnel was waterproofed with 3.3 million m² of Sikaplan® membranes – roughly the size of 330 soccer pitches! Overall, some 40,000 tonnes of Sika products, equivalent to 1,700 freight wagons, were transported to the site! 4 See more at: http://www.sika.com/en/group/Media/SikaNews/sika-technology-in-gotthard-tunnel.html#sthash.95w7AV07.dpuf 5 SIKA® CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY FOR RESTORATION OF MAHESHWAR GHAT, KHARGONE, MADHYA PRADESH 6 7 Total length of the Maheshwar ghat is 620 meters with an average breadth of 40 meters. The steps leading to the river are made of stone blocks. These steps are leading up to 7 meters from the top of the water level. Most of the steps in the lower 3.5 meters got damaged due to the current of river, eventually forming different sizes of cavities. These cavities were filled with Sika’s anti-wash concrete. This is yet another initiative by Sika towards preserving India’s rich architectural heritage. The beautiful Maheshwar Ghat located in the eponymous town is believed to be built on the site of the ancient city of Somvanshya Shastrarjun Kshatriya, and was the capital of king Kartavirya Arjuna, (Shree Shastrarjun) who is mentioned in the Sanskrit epics Mahabharata & Ramayana. In the late 18th century, Maheshwar served as the capital of the great Maratha queen Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar. The Ghats are known for their immaculate architecture and have been a major tourist attraction for years. 8 Project Requirements Concrete to be done under water having anti-wash properties and required workability to fill different sizes of cavities formed on the steps. Sika Solution Superplasticizing admixture to get the required workability and water reduction. Anti-wash admixture to make the concrete dense and to minimize the wash out of fine materials when poured under water. Sika Products • Sika® ViscoCrete ®2002 HE (Ultra high performance super plasticizer) • Sika® UCS-h (Anti-wash admixture) Project Participants • Owner- Jal Sansadhan Sambhag, Khargone, Government of Madhya Pradesh • Contractor – Shree Ram Shera Contractor 9 Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars After and the world's biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles. In India, Daimler India Commercial Vehicle (DICV) produces trucks and buses specially designed for the Indian market and for its export markets in Asia, Africa and South America. DICV's state-of-the-art Oragadam plant near Chennai, spread over 400 acres, is the only Daimler facility producing three brands of commercial vehicles. Before Project Requirements Deteriorated expansion joints created an interruption in the continuity of the floor surface, leading to operational slowdowns and increased vehicle maintenance costs. High rack lifts with smaller and harder wheels were causing deformation of floor joints due to increased point loads. Sika Solution Sika® Floor Joint S is recommended as a solution for the problem. It is a prefabricated, carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer composite panel with extremely high physical properties. Because of the waved joint design an improved load distribution is achieved. It is the standard panel for new buildings and refurbishment of joints for concrete screeds with normal up to medium heavy wear e.g. ware houses etc. Sika Products Sika® Floor Joint S • Sikadur ®-31 • Sikafloor ®-161 Project Participants Client: Daimler India Limited• Architect & Consultant: PTK Architects • Applicator: Sree Balaji Buildcare Pvt. FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Dear Friends, What is sustainability? WHAT TO EAT DURING MONSOON n Avoid eating a lot of raw foods during this season, like raw A STEP TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE FUTURE The limited availability of fossil resources and need to reduce carbon emissions, particularly in the cement industry, pushed the development of bio-based polymers with potentially low carbon footprint. Sika India has now developed 100% indigenously developed biobased version of Polycarboxylate technology for concrete superplasticizer. The main produces of this technology are Sika Viscocrete, SikaPlast, and Sika ViscoFlow admixtures. Based on the raw material mass, synthesized bio-based PCE superplasticizer contains more than 80% bio-based carbon. Additionally, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comparison with conventional crude oil based PCE confirms the reduced carbon footprint. In addition to clinker reduction, bio-based superplasticizers can help further in reduction of the carbon footprint, and improve sustainability of concrete in the future. In this newly developed technology, over 80% of the oil-based raw materials have been replaced by renewable vegetable substances left as waste from sugar production. In addition to the ecological benefits, bio-based Sika ViscoCrete®, SikaPlast®, Sika ViscoFlow® also enhance properties of concrete, including a substantial reduction in water consumption and robust behavior of fresh concrete, creating an ideal balance between its density and flow characteristics. Project Site activity started: 16th Feb 2016 Project completed and commissioned: 8th April 2016 Plant ready for production: 17th June 2016 Plant capacity: 10,000 Tons/Annum Sika India now have two plants producing PCE, one in Kalyani and the other in Jhagadia. The Jhagadia plant will reduce the dependency of Western and Northern India for PCE based admixture and will reduce the overall logistic cost and time. Some phrases popping up in my mind “Consume less, share more.”“More for less”. “High value, less impact”. vegetable salads. Instead one can carry stir-fried veggies or the normal sabzi preparations that are usually an integral part of an Indian diet. n Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly, particularly leafy ones and cauliflower, which not only contain larvae and worms but also collect dirt from the streets. n Eat moderate quantities of food as the body finds it harder to digest food during the monsoon. Sustainability is the future WE want. We a r e n o w g o i n g t h r o u g h a sustainability revolution which will transform our living environment. Innovation and creativity is needed to develop radical, new, products and processes those are less damaging to the environment and generate new businesses. De-materialization is the name of the game: more economic value out of less 'stuff' in. FOOD FOR MONSOON The stakes are high, the challenges are great, but progress is possible, and the progress is necessary. History isn’t made by those who stand silent; it is made by those whose actions reflect their intentions. n Drink warm beverages; add mint or ginger or dry ginger powder n n n n n n n n to tea. Include naturally sour food (not fermented) like tamarind, tomato, lime, thin buttermilk and kokum in your diet - in soups, daals and vegetables. Moong dal is easy to digest, especially the watery daal version Garlic, pepper, ginger, asafetida, turmeric, coriander and cumin enhance your body’s digestive power and improve immunity . Vegetables recommended during the rains: lady’s finger, pointed gourd, elephant foot yam, roasted brinjal and bitter gourd. Pomegranates, chikoos, bananas and strawberries are ideal for the monsoon. Eat a couple of dates every day for your iron and energy requirements. Non-vegetarians should go in for lighter meat preparations like soups and stews rather than heavy curries Overall, astringent, mildly bitter and mildly pungent foods work best in the monsoon Drink only boiled and filtered water Sustainability is probably the most i m p o r ta n t c ro s s- c u t t i n g i s s u e . Companies like Sika that embraces sustainability and strives for safer environment is creating a better future for us. This Sika Spirit house magazine reflects our intentions and efforts towards creating a sustainable environment by using safer products and solutions for our projects. I congratulate all my colleagues for contributing in creating better and sustainable future to protect our environment and human health. It is up to each of us here to continue to speak out for the future we want to create our world with less wastage and with sustainable future growth.
