Holy Redeemer
Pancake Breakfast
Saturday, April 12th
7:45 - 2:00 PM.
Volunteers will help
serve yummy pancakes, sausages, coffee and
beverages, clean tables and help clean up.
The shifts are as follows:
7:45AM-11:00 AM or 10:45 AM-2:00 PM
Breakfast will be held at the Provincialate of the
Sisters of the Holy Redeemer,

The Abington
Art Center in Jenkintown is seeking summer camp
interns to assist campers and teachers with
Summer Art Camp. The kids are ages 4-12.

The Audubon History Project

Meet after school in the
Library Classroom
You will work with a
partner to digitalize
records of bird
sightings dating back to 1935. This will help
scientists learn about migration and climate
warming. Everyone is invited to attend the
introduction to see if this project is right for you.
Service hours are awarded for the time you
contribute, which may be after school, during
lunch or study halls. Sign up in the Service

We will be assisting with a variety of tasks to
serve the children helped by C2C. Tasks
include cleaning toys and counting game
pieces, stocking book shelves, sorting
clothing donations, and more. Please

Only Junior High Students who
have not participated at MANNA
before: Meet in the Main Office. Space is
limited to the first six students who return
permission forms. We cook. We pack food.
Bring $ for a fast food dinner. Wear sturdy,

Walkabout & Autoimmune Disease Health Fair
At the Philadelphia Zoo!
Saturday, May 2, 2015 (This is an SAT test date)
Volunteers must arrive by 7:30 AM and you will be free
to visit the Zoo exhibits at 11:30 AM. You will receive 6
hours of service learning credit for your work.
Duties: Set up, give out T-shirts, direct people, answer
questions and/or other, as-needed, functions to be
decided as event date approaches. (14+)
The Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation (SSF ), helps people
living with this chronic autoimmune disease in which a
person’s white blood cells attack their moistureproducing glands. Today, as many as 4 million
Americans are living with this disease.

This huge family festival celebrates different
cultural backgrounds to raise money for our
not-for-profit pre-school. We need help with
are running simple games (like a bean bag
toss), arts and craft stations, ticket booths,
etc. The festival draws over 700 attendees
and we really need a lot of hands to help

VFW Post #676
Memorial Day Flag
Placement
Join members of Post #676 to help honor fallen
soldiers by placing more than 5000 new American
flags on their graves. Each Saturday and Sunday
from May 2nd through May 17th, from 10am – 3pm,
you will meet at the VFW on Jenkintown Road in
Glenside, and then go to either Holy Sepultures or
Hillside Cemetery to lay the flags. Lunch will be
provided. You must sign up for this opportunity to
work alongside our Veterans. You may participate
on one day or more days of service. (14+)

Food Tent (prepare meals and snacks,
serve, clean-up)

May 1st: An important date to remember! Friday,
May 1st - This is the day when 10th and 11th
graders may begin to sign up for Service Learning
Day activities. Service Learning Day will be held
on Friday, May 29th. This is also the day that a
COPY of your log sheet is due to the Service
Learning Office or the Junior High Library, if you
have 50 or more hours of service. Include all of
your service from last June 1st (2014) to this
coming May 31st (2015). All service work you
performed last summer counts. If you total fifty
or more hours of service, you qualify for a service
award. All you have to do is put a COPY (just a
copy ) of your log sheet in the box in the Junior
High Library or turn it in to the Service Office on,
or before May 1st. You may also count your
May, 2015, hours by estimating the service hours
you will perform that month. (For example,
sophomores and juniors will get 5 hours on
Service Learning Day….24-Hour Relay = 12 hours,
etc. These hours count toward your total.) Don’t
forget. A copy of your Log sheets is due by May
1st if you have 50 hours of service or more and
would like to receive a service award.
LATE LOG SHEETS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Schools Out! Get Outside!
April 2, 3 & 6 8:30am – 5pm
Help BBNC staff work with children in kindergarten
through 6th grade. This program features unique
activities including hikes, games, live animals, crafts and
much more. Sign up for one day or the entire series. Pack
a lunch; snack provided. Sign-up required.

National Honor Society Members:
Remember you need 3 meeting credits. If you
participated in the Kindergarten Book trip, you have
met this requirement. In April, making a Brady's
Smiles Blanket will count as a meeting, whichever you
prefer. Please come, sign up in room 112 for a time
slot. Our next formal meeting will be April 16th after
school in the Little Theater. An admissions
representative from the University of Pennsylvania will
speak to us.

The Susanna DeLaurentis
Memorial Scholarships are
awarded each year to collegebound high school seniors
with superior academic and extracurricular
achievements who contend with a chronic
disease or other serious challenge to physical
or mental health. Honorees are selected by an
independent committee of evaluators, and are
announced in May.
Award: The scholarship is a $1,000 award,
paid directly to the honoree’s institution of
higher learning.

Service Office and must be received by

The Abington EAC needs your
help to clean-up and beautify
Abington's parks and public
spaces. Clean-ups are a great
way to make a difference in
your neighborhood. We report our results to
the Great American Cleanup of PA.* In
Pennsylvania last year, volunteers picked up
6.3 million pounds of trash, and planted 31,000
trees. What a difference! The EAC provides
free snacks, trash bags, gloves and safety

SPARK THE WAVE WEEK 2015
Wave Week is one of the premier serviceleadership training programs in the United States –
and will be one of the best weeks of your life.
Through our intensive 6-day program of leadership
development, community service, team building
activities and summer fun you will learn how to
plan and execute better service projects while
building stronger teams. Wave Week welcomes
students who completed 6th grade through 11th
grade during the school year preceding Wave Week.
Delegates are divided into two tracks based upon
their age (6-8th grade & 9th-11th grade). Each track
meets separately for most activities and for dorm
assignments. Meals, social events, and large group
activities and service projects incorporate both
tracks. We hold two sessions of Wave Week, and
would love to see you at both weeks!

careers in Public Health. Dr.
Christiaan Morssink (biography
below) will speak to all who are
interested about global labor,
population issues and medical careers which all tie
into majors in Public Health. If you are interested
in a future career where you can help people and
have a desire to focus on international opportunities,
then please join us on Friday, April 17th at 2:45 in
the Audion.
Dr. Morssink is Adjunct Professor of Public Heath and
Global Population at the University of Pennsylvania.
He holds degrees in cultural anthropology and nonWestern sociology from the University of Amsterdam in
the Netherlands, a MPH from Johns Hopkins, and a
Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration from the
University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health.
Dr. Morssink has 30+ years of practice and teaching
experience in public health and related fields in the
Netherlands as well as in the Republic of Suriname,
where he was head of the Department of Planning and
Project Management in the Ministry of Health, and in
the US. Dr. Morssink is President of both the United
Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia and the
Global Water Alliance. He sits on the board of the
Project for Nuclear Awareness and on the advisory
board of the Fairmount Water Works. His interests are
many and flow from the understanding of public health
is an action oriented domain of the world’s political
economy; they include the effects of the built
environment on health, elimination of health
disparities, hunger and urban farming, and the
campaign to ban and clear landmines and cluster
bombs in communities around the world.

Hey Rockledge Kids!

The Tookany/Tacony/ Frankford Partnership
(TTF) needs your help to mark storm drains in
Rockledge during Earth Week. Marked storm
drains help stop litter from washing into our
creeks! Storm water runoff carries trash, car
oil, and other pollutants directly to the creeks
in our community, harming water quality and
wildlife. Be part of a neighborhood effort to
protect the Tookany Creek by working with
the TTF to mark storm drains with educational
markers and by providing information to
residents. Meet at the playground at Jarrett
and Abington Avenues. Wear old clothes and
shoes that might get dirty. Sign up is
