of Theatre for Young Audiences.
Join us for a festival of outstanding theatre from around the globe
for children, young people and families. Over one week, ON THE EDGE
presents 16 world-class shows at some of Birmingham’s leading venues:
Birmingham Repertory Theatre, mac birmingham, Birmingham City
University, The Patrick Centre at Birmingham Hippodrome, Blue Orange
Theatre and The Old Rep.
Babies can get their first taste of theatre with Out of the Blue, whilst
toddlers and younger children will love the trampoline-based fun
of Boing! We have the Dracula-inspired tale Nosferatu, whilst the
fantastically-named show Why Do Hyenas Have Shorter Back Legs
Than Front Legs And Why Do Monkeys Have Bare Bottoms? brings
the colours of Africa to the mac birmingham stage.
Teenagers and older children will enjoy The Broke ‘N’ Beat Collective,
a hip-hop gig that explores the lives of young people in the UK,
or experience The Hamilton Complex, a performance by 13 teenage
girls that looks at moments in life when things begin to change.
Don’t forget to visit I Think I Can at the Library of Birmingham,
an art installation that allows you to inhabit a model railway
and village using the powers of technology.

After shaking and mixing, rolling and battering,
something delicious appears on the plate.
Puppeteer and actress Myriam Rossbach breathes
new life into the kitchen. She uses utensils in
unconventional ways, gets them to dance and
even lures a tune or two from the pots and pans.

her movements, her dancing, her acting and

Everything is flat, pressed, squished. A dusty,
musty smell mixes with the scent of old lavender
and a string lifts a flap to reveal a hidden door.

the window into a secret world and a curious life
unfolds before us - but who was Josephine

I Think I Can is an interactive artwork that invites
you to enter into a miniature town and model
railway, becoming active members of a tiny
community.
After completing a playful ‘Career Test’ to
personality-match you with a puppet, a tiny
alter-ego is yours to be steered through daily life.
You will make decisions for your character
and see the puppetry displayed on screens
surrounding the installation. As more people join
in, the community grows. The townsfolk’s antics
and adventures are shared with the world via an
online newspaper.
Terrapin is assisted by the Australian Government
through the Australia Council, its arts funding
and advisory body, and through Arts Tasmania
by the Minister for the Arts.

A Feast of Bones is a dark musical fable from
Theatre Lovett, set in the shadows of World War
One.
Nosferatu
Dracula, but not
quite as you know it... A young lawyer named Hutter travels from his
small town to the Carpathian mountains to close a
sale for a mysterious count. Despite surprises and
bad omens he encounters on the way, he
continues his journey to the castle where he is
welcomed by Count Orlock - someone who looks a
bit like a bat but also a bit like a garlic clove.
That’s when things start to get scary.
Unconventional French theatre-makers, Bob
Théâtre, bring humour, horror and an inventive
use of light bulbs to ON THE EDGE. Are you brave
enough to meet our spooky storytellers?
A gentleman dines at a fine French restaurant but at Le Monde Bouleversé you never get
quite what you expect. Underneath their
human exteriors, beastly greeds and needs
are crouching, awaiting their chance to pounce!
At Le Monde Bouleversé revenge is a dish
best served cold.

Wot? No Fish!! Wot? No Fish!! tells the true story of a Jewish
family living in 20th century London. From falling
in love to quarrels about fish balls, audiences are
taken on a funny and moving journey against the
backdrop of a changing city.
In 1926 shoemaker Ab Solomons drew on the
wage packet he gave to his new wife Celie.
Throughout their marriage and into the 1980s,
Ab drew or painted on his wage packet every
week for her. These illustrations depict, with
remarkable honesty, the ups and downs of
their life together.

of Holland. Victims of extremism, Theo Van Gogh
and Pim Fortuyn weren't afraid to make their
opposing political views known.
Pim & Theo explores the opposing but oddly
linked lives of two key Dutch political figures,
Pim Fortuyn and Theo Van Gogh - both murdered
in public by extremists. This immersive theatre
show explores culture and identity, life and rules
and the limits of tolerance in our society.

Replay Theatre Company presents
Bliss
Bliss is an immersive pirate adventure created for
children and young people with Profound and
Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).
The ON THE EDGE Learning Programme is enabling hundreds of local school children and scores of
teaching staff from twelve Birmingham and West Midlands schools to get involved with the festival
in innovative and interactive ways. Our goal is to ensure that the global nature of the festival connects
directly and locally with Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Somewhere between multi-sensory room and
theatre, Bliss takes its audience - each in their
very own boat - on a magical journey on the
high seas.
There are residencies by international theatre companies in local schools, including the immersive
adventure Bliss, hosted by Mayfield School. Other pupils have enjoyed workshops based on Why Do
Hyenas Have Shorter Back Legs Than Front Legs And Why Do Monkeys Have Bare Bottoms?, and South
Korean company Brush are working in Robin Hood Academy in Birmingham to create a curtain-raiser
performance with their Year 5 students.

ON THE EDGE is the 2016 Artistic Gathering
of ASSITEJ, the international association
of theatre for children and young people.
As well as inspirational performances, ON THE
EDGE is accompanied by a busy programme of
talks and networking for theatre professionals.
500 delegates from around the world will
descend on Birmingham to enjoy a dynamic
Symposium programme and the chance
to socialise with friends and colleagues.

TYA UK and TYA Ireland are the UK and Irish Centres
of ASSITEJ. They are the national membership
associations representing and promoting
professional organisations and individual artists
whose work primarily focuses on engaging children
and young people through professional theatre.
They provide a crucial link between members and
ASSITEJ as a global association, the arts sector,
the wider community and funders, supporting
opportunities for professional development,
advocacy and internationalism. Their members aim
to provide access to high quality professional
performing arts experiences to all children and
young people in the UK and Ireland.
Spanning five continents, ASSITEJ is a global
association of professionals who make theatre
for young audiences. ASSITEJ creates space for an
international exchange of ideas and practice and
advocates for the rights of children to experience
theatre that is made especially for them.
