KALVERTOREN MAGAZINE Autumn Win/2te0r15 2014 Autumn Winter|2014-2015 | 1 A view of our History Montelbaanstoren Munttoren 1480 Muntplein 12/14 The Cointower, where coins were minted, was originally part of the Regulierspoort, one of the main gates in Amsterdam’s medieval city wall. The gate, built in the years 1480 consisted of two towers and a guard house. Rebuilt after fire in Amsterdam Renaissance style in 1620, designed by Hendrick de Keyser, featuring a clockwork with four clockfaces and a carillon of bells. 1516 Oudeschans 2 Nicknamed Malle Jaap, because it played at irregular times. The original tower was built in 1516 for the purpose of defending the city. The top half, designed by Hendrick de Keyser, was extended to its current, decorative form in 1606. Zuiderkerk 1614 Zuiderkerkhof 72 This Protestant church played an important part in the life of Rembrandt and was the subject of a painting by Claude Monet. Kalvertoren SHOPPINGCENTER Design of the church in Amsterdam Renaissance style is by Hendrick de Keyser who was also buried in the church. Three of Rembrandt’s children were buried here too which is very near to Rembrandt’s house. Rumor has it Rembrandt painted the Night Watch at the church because his own studio was too small.
