Kim Huston President Nelson County Economic Development Agency www.visitbardstown.com 4 Hospitality - Kentucky Style The Bourbon Open Tradition ©2005 Colonel Michael Masters, “The Host of Kentucky”TM The Bourbon Open is celebrating its 60th anniversary, making The Bourbon Open the oldest continuously played golf contest in Kentucky. And though this fact gives The Bourbon Open distinction in the sporting archives of the Commonwealth, it is the nature of the event that makes it special. No question, The Bourbon Open is a match play golf event. There can be no doubt that it is an Old Kentucky Home Country Club event. And for certain it is a Bourbon event. All of these factors combine on the third weekend in May to produce a uniquely Bardstown event. Mrs. Madge Rowan Frost, the last Rowan descendant to own and reside at Federal Hill, was the grand matron of the 600-acre Bardstown plantation everyone knew as My Old Kentucky Home. Mrs. Frost was a Kentucky belle of proud heritage. Her grandfather was Judge John Rowan, the prominent Bardstown and Louisville lawyer, a duelist having killed Dr. James Chambers in 1801, a United States senator, a Kentucky Appeals Court jurist and a farmer. now christened My Old Kentucky State Park necessary for a nine-hole golf course. Just as their pioneer forebears had done, these stalwart men with a vision of golf, found the means and the where-with-all to build their dream for the future out of the woods and forests. It could not have been an easy endeavor. The stock market crashed in 1929 sending the nation into an economic depression of terrible consequence. The Volstead Act in 1919, enforcing the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States constitution, prohibiting the manufacture, sale or transportation of alcoholic beverages, had effectively put Bardstown’s robust Bourbon distillery industry out of business. Undaunted, these men, standing tall and proud against the winds of uncertainty constructed the golf course, using the rolling hills of Federal Hill as the natural landscape. Though the course may have lacked the refinement of the more urban links, where the capital required to build sophisticated irrigation and drainage systems was more available, it had a natural beauty of play that was absolutely breath taking. enlisted the assistance of some of the greatest Bardstown promoters of all time-the Bourbon whiskey men. Bill Samuels of T.W. Samuels, Charles DeSpain of Heaven Hill, Jeremiah Beam of Jim Beam, Thompson Willett of the Willett Distillery, Sam Westerman and Paul Kraus and other distillers in Nelson County declared their support for a Bardstown golf tournament. The annual golf match was to be presented by the Old Kentucky Home Country Club. The golf tournament by acclaim was to be called The Bourbon Open. The founders of The Bourbon Open envisioned Bardstown filling up one weekend a year with golfers all bent upon exercising their right to have a great time toting a bag of irons and woods in a round of golf. The notion that the My Old Kentucky Home state park old course could compare favorably with the wealth subsidized golf courses in Louisville and Lexington was never at issue. The old course, stunningly beautiful as it followed the natural ridge lines of the Federal Hill plantation land, had no irrigation to continued on page 6 Now, however, late in her life, Mrs. Frost’s beloved plantation home was in ruins. The family money, which had been so plentiful in the years after the Revolutionary War, was played out, having been depleted by years of inveterate gambling, Civil War and several economic depressions. It looked as if the old stately home would need to be demolished and it’s wooded farm land sub-divided and sold at Mrs. Frost’s death. The whole of Bardstown wept. Then in the abyss of despair a miracle occurred. The politicians of Bardstown appealed to state government to purchase Federal Hill and declare it the Kentucky state shrine. The women of Bardstown, led by the irrepressible, strikingly beautiful and politically savvy Catherine Conner rallied the Women’s Clubs across the state to raise the required private funds to effect the purchase. Against all odds the people of Bardstown prevailed. Federal Hill became the Kentucky state shrine and this very southern town had its plantation to showcase to the world. Now what to do with the 600-acres. Prominent citizens of Bardstown seeing the opportunity for a golf link chartered the Old Kentucky Home Country Club in 1928. The club’s first act was to lease the grounds at the In 1933 the world changed for Bardstown. The Eighteenth Amendment was negated by the Twenty-First Amendment and Prohibition was repealed. The distillery industry in Bardstown and across Kentucky came back to life. Just as life appeared to be getting better for Bardstown, World War II took our young men to the battlefields of the global conflict. Our men came back to Bardstown in 1945 after the peace had been won, ready to build their town using the Kentucky hospitality assets so abundant in Bardstown, namely: fine aged bourbon whiskey, good food, Kentucky history and golf. The old course at My Old Kentucky Home was in sad repair. The war had taken a terrible toll upon it from lack of play. The possibility that it might be turned back into a cornfield was very real. Many of the prominent citizens of Bardstown and members of the Old Kentucky Home Country Club felt the time had come for Bardstown to host a golf tournament. Lee Grigsby and Ed Abell 5 manicure its greens and had the limitation of only having nine holes. The Bourbon Open, as declared by the Bardstown business leaders and whiskey men, would win its legacy by providing a great social experience along with a weekend of golf. It has long been recognized that some golfers are serious in their play and are competitive and capable of winning the event and to these players The Bourbon Open gives honor and the tournament’s opportunity for fame and glory. To the rest of the field it is all about having a good time with a golf club in your hand. The allure of The Bourbon Open is simple enough; it is a social event. Golfers from around the Commonwealth and beyond come to Bardstown, drink some fine aged Bourbon whiskey, eat good food and play a round of golf with friends. This is Kentucky hospitality at its very best and it is the Bardstown way. The Bourbon Open hosted 36 entrants in 1945 and from that date forward rapidly earned a solid reputation as one of the great party weekends in Kentucky. Charles DeSpain of Heaven Hill for many years hosted a party at his home on Beall Street in Bardstown that swelled to a size so considerable that it eventually had to be moved to the armory. Fabian Mathis formed the Bourbon Open Fire Department, driving Bourbon Open revelers around town on the ancient truck, siren screaming. Even the Fabian Mathis donkey made an annual appearance, one lady exclaiming, “I can’t believe I fooled around with that damned jackass.” Speaking of the donkey, naturally! The tournament had a wonderful souvenir book published to advertise and promote the event. Ben Spalding I got the idea that Bardstown could use such a book. Al Wathen, the publisher of The Kentucky Standard, fell in love with the idea. He felt the newspaper could support it with advertising campaigns sponsored by the distilleries that had a vested interest in promoting their Bourbon brands. The Bourbon Open book has been published each year since 1954. The Ladies Golf Association, formed to support the efforts of the nascent golf tournament, worked feverishly to raise the money required to finance the weekend of golf and to prepare the food necessary to feed the club membership and the golfers over a three-day holiday weekend. A luncheon on Saturday, with a mink stole raffle, headlined the fundraising effort. Virtually all of the women in the club bent their backs to complete the myriad tasks. As one lady informed, “We had fun, more than you can possibly imagine. The Bourbon Open was one of the premier social outings of the year in Bardstown. All of the women would pitch in, sharing the workload. We would then dress up for the parties and entertain our guests. The Bourbon Open party would last for three days and two nights, non-stop. The men managed the golf tournament but the women ran the show.” She then opined, “Isn’t that always the way it is.” Although several ladies had played golf during the last decade, in 2002 a separate ladies flight was added to the golfing agenda, creating even greater appeal for the tournament and adding luster to the event. There have been so many heroes in the history of the Bourbon Open. So many men and women, most members of the Old Kentucky continued on page 8 A U TO M O T I V E C E N T E R FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE 1919 SERVICE • PARTS • COLLISION REPAIR FACTORY TRAINED & CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS www.conway-heaton.com 348-3929 810 N. 3RD ST. The Bourbon Open has such a rich social tradition based on enjoying long-standing friendships and giving community service. In speaking with Rick Molyneaux and his sister Julie Wilson, the devotion to The Bourbon Open extended well beyond golf as it transcended to a family social occasion, looked forward to with great anticipation each year. Their father, Charles Molyneaux, was the official starter on the number one tee with his wife Grace and children Rick, Julie and Betty providing erstwhile backup and record keeping. The Bourbon Open book was dedicated to him in 1975. twilight of his career as Bardstown’s quintessential ambassador of goodwill. The dedication honor to him extended to his wife Ish by acclamation, who respectfully by his side, supported his prodigious efforts at making our Bardstown events work smoothly. Judge Freeman Carothers, with his effervescent charm and Kentucky gentleman persona, emceed the prize ceremony for The Bourbon Open’s first half century. Kim Huston shares a similar experience. She and her brother Tiger Huston helped their father D.L. Huston manage the scoreboard for over a decade. The service provided by D.L Huston and his progeny on the scoreboard came after two decades of service provided by the legendary Dick Martin who had The Bourbon Open book dedicated to him in 1979. There are hundreds of family stories, as they worked The Bourbon Open for decades, thereby achieving some of the great and memorable times of their lives. John Prewitt, after over 35 years as manager of My Old Kentucky Home Golf Course, leased by Old Kentucky Home Country Club, retired in 1992. In this year the Kentucky state park system assumed the management of the golf course, adding nine holes and renaming the venerable links, The Kenny Rapier Championship Golf Course in honor of our beloved state representative, dry cleaner and friend. John Prewitt, and I am sure by association his wife Hazel, managed the golf course faithfully throughout the years, under times I am sure that were financially lean and arduous. This was his part-time job that worked him forty hours a week during the golfing season. His other job, as an engineer for Brandeis Equipment, the job that supported his family, worked him the other forty hours. Judge Freeman Carothers had The Bourbon Open book dedicated to him in 2001 in the Ron Greenwell, the regionally renowned sportswriter for The Kentucky Standard for 8 over thirty years was an avid promoter of The Bourbon Open. His association with the event started for him in the 1950’s as he carried golf bags as a caddy for the out-of-town guests. His articles, in The Kentucky Standard showcasing the event, were annually picked up by other newspapers as news about Bardstown. His photographs covering the golf tournament documented the fun and frivolity that is the essence of The Bourbon Open and these photos graced the pages of The Bourbon Open book for over three decades. The Bourbon Open book was dedicated to Ron Greenwell in the 2000 season, small honor for a man who loomed so large in the history of The Bourbon Open and the sports and community life of Bardstown. The Bourbon Open committee in the 2000 book edition also honored Jeff Hayden. It is not easy to manage a golf tournament for 500 golf entrants, no matter how adequate the support by volunteers and staff of which may be noted, though well intended, is never enough. I have watched Jeff Hayden, starting with the 1998 season, present The Bourbon Open golf program. His fine sense of humor, ethical demeanor, hard work and devotion to the Old Kentucky Home Country Club and to The Bourbon Open has endeared him to all of us who have had the pleasure of working with him. Joe “Itchy” O’Bryan whom at one time played in The Bourbon Open. They ask about their comrades at the club, and they almost invariably inquire after Joe “Itchy” O’Bryan, the Old Kentucky Home bartender they so fondly remember and respect. There are so many threads that have run through the 60 years of The Bourbon Open, giving this event the drama and tradition befitting the oldest continuously played golf tournament in Kentucky history. We have borne witness to some truly great golf. The magnificent golf play of hometown sons Haydon Spalding, Ben Spalding III, Rick Molyneaux, Patrick Conway, Jimmy Dan Conner and Willie Edelin are legend. The play of Don Gruber and Don Woods both, winning six times, memorable. Gay Brewer prepped here in 1952 and 1953, winning The Bourbon Open, then winning The Masters in Augusta, Georgia in 1967. There have been oh so many good golfers amongst us. What a pleasure it is to have been a part of it all. The level of dedicated effort by Bob Heaton, Sr., Joe Wycoff, Jim Hamby, Gus Wilson, Lee Grigsby, Julian Taylor, John Prewitt, Charles DeSpain and a hundred other men I glean from past editions of The Bourbon Open book to start this tournament and to keep it vital must have been awesome. Lee Grigsby managed the golf course for the first two decades and John Pruitt managed the golf course for the next 35 years and honor is bestowed upon them for their service. The efforts of Randall Burba, Greg Puckett and Jeff Hayden in this generation of The Bourbon Open and again a hundred other men and women not named in this article have led the way since the1980’s. The leadership responsibilities for the golf tournament and its many tasks have been shared by the entire membership of the Old Kentucky Home Country Club at one time or another. Due to the longtime play of our “seasoned citizens,” a senior division was added in 2002. The Bourbon distilling industry in Bardstown and Nelson County has been so critically important to our Bardstown life. For over two hundred years they have risked their capital to produce Bourbon whiskey here. The calcium rich limestone bedrock waters of Bardstown and Nelson County and the whiskey distilling expertise of the Beam family from 1790 onward and their hundreds of whiskey-wise descendants have been the basis for our Sam Cecil extraordinary Bourbon whiskey industry. Our good friend Sam Cecil, master distiller at Star Hill-Maker’s Mark, his last tour of duty, passed away this year and we are reminded of the great whiskey men that have graced our lives. The contribution the Willett family made through their Willett Distillery, generously sponsoring and participating in the early days of The Bourbon Open, is inestimable. The leadership of the Shapira family through Heaven Hill Distillery in making The Bourbon Open a resounding success is incalculable. The Samuels family, through their distilleries T.W. Samuels and Star Hill-Maker’s Mark has been a phenomenal benefactor of The Bourbon Open. The executives at Tom Moore Distillery and Barton Brands have been fantastic backers of The Bourbon Open event. The Beam distillery, first through T. Jeremiah Beam, then through his lineage have been tremendous supporters of The Bourbon Open effort. In recent years The Four Roses Distillery has come on board. After all this is The Bourbon Open—it is their golf tournament in partnership with the Old Kentucky Home Country Club. continued on page 10 Clark Distributing And through it all there has been our Old Kentucky Home Country Club bartender and friend, Joe “Itchy” O’Bryan. For over 30 years Joe has poured out our fine aged Kentucky Bourbon whiskey. He has listened to our stories of golfing prowess and golfing defeat. He has patiently and non-judgmentally been a part of the tine and timber of our lives as we, his membership, join him at his bar to share our lives in conversation and communion with our family and friends. All of us have acquaintances who have moved away or 9 And by all means, when in and around The Bourbon Open, enjoy fine aged Kentucky Bourbon whiskey. And after a Bourbon libation allow me to offer my toast, a salute to all that is important. And after a good toast allow me to share some of our favorite Bourbon drinks. He was fishing with a buddy of his, Ritchie Oakley better known as Tweed. Richard Zuck has had his Florida Buddies up here from Florida for the past 6 seasons. He was looking for something unusual to give away each year for the team from each state that had the best round of golf that year. Thus the “Willis Trophy”. Tommy had carved this piece of wood into an old man . We call it “Willis”. Florida took it home with them this past year and passed it around each holding Willis for three months at a time. He was even ridden on a Fire Truck since one of the team members is a fireman in Clay County, Florida. Willis is coming back to Kentucky where hopefully he will stay this year. If you look all that grass... all those stains Tom Cayce: Tampa, Florida real close you may see Willis riding around the golf course with one of the Florida boys. Florida will miss Willis this next year. Stay tuned for results. -Richard Zuck 19 102 South 4th Bardstown, KY 40004 Enjoy your weekend at the Bourbon Open.... ...no matter what. 20 Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Spotlight on Randall Burba by Colonel Michael Masters 2005 Randall Burba has discovered that there are a thousand ways to work a golf tournament and many times as many ways to manage a country club.
