Description of the build
Habitat for Humanity Europe and Central Asia welcomes families
from around the world to make homeownership a reality for people in need –
one house, one family at a time.
Be part of this event engaging the parents in building someone’s better future
alongside their children. Experience together new culture, learn more about the
Romanian family you will be working with and make a difference to their life
by giving them a hand out of the poverty cycle.
„Volunteering in Armenia for Habitat for Humanity, one week in July 2010,
was an once-in-a-lifetime experience, for both my teenage son and me. I believe
it’s because each and every one of the many people we met during this one week
became a dear and unique friend. A few dozen strangers added to your life, all
people you want to meet again and spend time with, not just “time” but “quality
time”. So, this was the Habitat experience for me: FRIENDS. People.“
Frans van Rossum, volunteer, Parent&Child Build 2010
What are we going to build?
New homes built by HFH in Romania are mainly constructed using a wooden frame
structure and sandwich-type walls made of thermo-insulating materials. It may be a single
house, a duplex, a quadplex or an apartment in a building with multi apartments. The size
of the home depends on the size of the family but generally are around 60m2 (600 sq ft)

Why Romania?
Romania is a country where poverty persists in spite of the European Union membership that was gained in 2007. Out of the
21.6 million people, more than 15 percent of the population is living below the poverty line. Some 2.4 million Romanians
live in extreme poverty, while another 1.2 million are struggling to secure daily needs. Habitat for Humanity Romania started
in 1996,
with Romania becoming Habitat for Humanity’s 50th country worldwide. Since then, HFH Romania has helped more than
1,600 families in need into simple, decent shelter, building new homes, renovating apartments and engaging in disaster
recovery.
“I don’t know how it’s like to have my own home; we have always lived in sadness and decrepitude. I am not afraid of working and I want to build a good house for me and my family, I want my kids to be proud of their father. I don’t want luxury,
just to be protected from rain and snow, to be warm in the winter, to be able to close the door behind us and not to be scared
of rats in the night anymore.”
