Enjoy your Welcome Dinner at a local Izakaya. GRAND PACIFIC LE DAIBA (3 Nights) (D) DAY 3: Mon, June 06 – TOKYO. After a sumptuous buffet breakfast, embark on a full day of discovery! View the Imperial Palace. Asakusa is the center of Tokyo’s shitamachi (literally “low city”), one of Tokyo’s districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Today’s highlight will be a hands-on, Sushi-Making session, which will yield your delicious lunch. Ameyoko is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name “Ameyoko” is a short form for “Ameya Yokocho” (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, “Ame” also stands for “America”, because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two. Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. After visits to Meiji Shrine and the visually stimulating Harajuku Shopping District, return to your hotel. Evening at leisure to explore your surroundings for a multitude of dining and shopping options! (B, L) DAY 4: Tue, June 07 – TOKYO. Full Day at Leisure. (B) DAY 5: Wed, June 08 – TOKYO – HAKONE. We now make way to Mt. Fuji – we will ascend to the 5th station at an elevation of 7,500 feet above sea level. Continue to Hakone. We begin with a 20 minute ropeway from Togendai to Owakudani. Much of the area is considered an active volcanic zone since its creation from the eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. Enjoy a boat ride on beautiful Lake Ashi. Enjoy the traditional Japanese “ryokan” style of hospitality. Savor an authentic multi-course, seasonal, gourmet kaiseki dinner. The public baths – which are divided for men and women – allow you to enjoy the hot springs whether indoors or outdoors. The high-quality service and facilities are sure to become some of your fondest memories of your visit to Japan. SENGOKUHARA PRINCE HOTEL (1 Night) (B, L, D) DAY 6: Thur, June 09 – HAKONE – BULLET TRAIN RIDE – HIROSHIMA – MIYAJIMA. Morning at leisure to enjoy another soak in the onsen hot springs and explore the manicured hotel grounds. Later transfer to Odawara Train Station where we will board a Shinkansen Bullet Train (reserved seating) to Hiroshima Station – (your suitcases will be sent separately to your Okayama hotel by baggage truck.) After a short ferry ride arrive on the island of Miyajima, considered sacred by many. This evening soak in the relaxing atmosphere of Iwaso Inn and the onsen, hot spring baths. You can enjoy the beauty of the primeval forests and gentle sound of mountain streams while taking a bath. This evening enjoy a Traditional, Multi-Course Kaiseki Dinner featuring Hiroshima’s local and seasonal ingredients including fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. IWASO INN (1 Night) Onsen and Kaiseki Dinner (B, D) DAY 7: Fri, June 10 – MIYAJIMA – HIROSHIMA – OKAYAMA. After a delicious breakfast explore Itsukushima Shrine. At high tide, the vermilion torii gate looks like it’s floating in the middle of the sea. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Miyajima has been selected as one of Japan’s three most scenic places (nihon sankei). Now board the ferry back to Hiroshima. In Hiroshima visit the Peace Memorial Park, Atomic Bomb Museum, A-Bomb Dome and Children’s Memorial. Upon arrival to Okayama enjoy an evening of shopping and dining at the Super AEON Shopping Mall. HOTEL GRANVIA OKAYAMA (B, L) DAY 8: Sat, June 11 – OKAYAMA – KURASHIKI – HIMEJI – KYOTO. Visit Kurashiki and it’s beautiful BikanArea. In merchant days, this scenic town thrived as a port for rice shipments. Several old rice granaries and examples of historic architecture still remain, in addition to the stone lined canal. Next we drive to Himeji to visit Himeji Castle. It is known as “White Egret Castle” and “White Heron Castle” because of it’s brilliant white exterior, resembling a bird taking flight. Himeji Castle is the largest and most visited castle in Japan. This splendid example of traditional architecture was declared one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Japan. Arrive in Kyoto. ROYAL PARK HOTEL KYOTO (3 Nights) (B, L) DAY 9: Sun, June 12 – KYOTO. After a sumptuous Japanese/Western buffet breakfast at the hotel, embark on a full day of sightseeing beginning with a visit to the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), a Zen Temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Next visit Heian Jingu Shrine. The shrine was built on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the capital’s foundation in Kyoto and is dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who reigned from the city, Emperor Kammu (737-806) and Emperor Komei (1831-1867). Heian is the former name of Kyoto. A giant torii gate marks the approach to the shrine. Today’s hands-on experience is “Surikomi Yuzen (brush dyed Yuzen)”. Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper stencil over a Tablemat you can make an authentic piece, even if this is your first time. Lastly, we visit Kiyomizu Temple (literally “Pure Water Temple”). In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. (B, L) DAY 10: Mon, June 13 – KYOTO. Full Day at Leisure. (B) DAY 11: Tue, June 14 – KYOTO – OSAKA – HONOLULU. On our way to Osaka, experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony before having lunch at the Hotel Nikko Nara’s buffet. Next visit the Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden building in Japan, which houses the larges bronze statue of Buddha at 16.3 meters high. The surrounding Nara Deer Park is inhabited by over 1,000 deer. Before arriving in Osaka, stop at COSTCO for a little shopping. Yes COSTCO! Don’t forget your membership card. Enjoy your Farewell Dinner. Transfer to Kansai Osaka International Airport for our flight home. Depart at 10:10 pm via JAPAN AIRLINES #792. Arrive same day in Honolulu at 10:55 am. Depart Honolulu via HAWAIIAN AIRLINES FLT #449 at 2:05 pm. Day 2: Thur, Oct 6 – OSAKA. Arrive Kansai International Airport at 6:15 pm. After entry formalities, walk to hotel located acroos the Kansai Airport. A deluxe buffet dinner has been arranged at hotel. HOTEL NIKKO KANSAI (1 Night) (D) Day 3: Fri, Oct 7 – OSAKA – NARA – KYOTO. In the morning we will travel to Nara, the oldest capital city of Japan. Visit Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden building in Japan. The largest bronze statue of Buddha at 16.3 meters high and the surrounding park is inhabited by over 1,000 Shika Deer. Then we proceed to Uji where we will experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Next visit, Byodoin Temple. Together with its garden, the temple represents the Pure Land Paradise and was influential on later temple construction. Byodoin was initially built in 998 as a countryside retreat villa for the powerful politician Fujiwara no Michinaga, not as a temple. On our way to Kyoto, we will visit the stunning vermilion colored Fushimi Inari Shrine, whose 4km long tunnel of scarlet torii gates was featured in the film Memoirs of a Geisha. After check in, explore the many restaurants and shops conveniently located near your hotel. NEW MIYAKO HOTEL KYOTO (2 Nights) (B, L) Day 4: Sat, Oct 8 – KYOTO. Today we continue our tour of Kyoto, once the capital of Japan and still considered its cultural center. First is a visit to the famous Kiyomizu Temple (literally “Pure Water Temple”), is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Today’s hands-on experience is “Surikomi Yuzen (brush dyed Yuzen)”, which is one of Kyoto’s traditional craft “Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing” techniques. Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper stencil over a piece of fabric, such as a table mat you can make an authentic piece, even if this is your first time. Your very own original work will be a perfect memento for yourself of a gift for someone. Lunch will be served at “Ganko Sanjo” where you will enjoy a specially prepared teishoku set – “Ganko Gozen”.Next, visit Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), a Zen Temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Lastly, we will tour Gion, the old Geisha Quarter. Our local tour guide will have many suggestions for dinner. (B, L) Day 5: Sun, Oct 9 – KYOTO – KANAZAWA – SHIRAKAWAGO – TAKAYAMA. After breakfast, take a JR Limited Express train to Kanazawa located on the shores of the Sea of Japan. Enjoy lunch in Kanazawa before we head out to Shirakawago. Ogimachi is the largest village and main attraction of Shirakawa-go. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, the village is home to several dozen well preserved gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. The Shiroyama Viewpoint is north of the village center and offers nice views of Ogimachi and its farmhouses. Myozenji Temple, which is unique for its thatched roof rather than the typical tiled roof seen on most temples, is connected to the Myozenji-ke farmhouse next door where the priest of the temple lives. Then, we continue on to Takayama, where a festival that dates to the 15th century will be heating up. Located amongst the Japan Alps it is known as “Little Kyoto” for its preserved historical structures. It was cut off from the rest of Japan for most of its history and thus has maintained a very unique and traditional atmosphere. This festival is held on the 9th and 10th of October to give thanks for good harvest. The highlight of the festival is in the evening when colorful dashi (floats) are led through the streets amid cheers and drums. These ornate floats are decorated with intricate wood carvings and beautiful metal work that look even more amazing against the backdrop of fiery reds and oranges of vibrant autumn leaves. HOTEL ASSOCIA TAKAYAMA RESORT (2 Nights) (B, L, D) Day 6: Mon, Oct 10 – TAKAYAMA. After breakfast we will continue sightseeing in Takayama, which includes the Morning Market, Takayama Jinya and Old Town. You can browse the market stalls for local crafts and fresh farm products. Takayama’s Old Town has been beautifully preserved, with many buildings and whole streets of houses dating from the Edo Period (1600–1868). On some streets, like Sannomachi Street, you can find many old homes, shops, coffee houses and sake breweries, some of which have been in business for centuries. Later, watch the floats as they parade through Old Town. This evening relax with a restful soak in the onsen (hot springs). Enjoy the seasonal bounty of your specially prepared, Multi-Course Kaiseki dinner. (B, L, D) Day 7: Tue, Oct 11 – TAKAYAMA – HAKONE. We now make way to Mt. Fuji – we will ascend to the 5th station at an elevation of 7,500 feet above sea level. Continue to Hakone. Again, enjoy a relaxing soak in an onsen (hot spring) before this evening’s Gourmet Kaiseki dinner. HAKONE PALACE HOTEL (1 Night) (B, D) Day 8: Wed, Oct 12 – HAKONE – TOKYO. Today we begin with a 20 minute ropeway from Togendai to Owakudani. Much of the area here is considered an active volcanic zone since its creation from the eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. Enjoy a pirate boat ride on beautiful Lake Ashi. Next enjoy a Yosegi-Zaiku Craft Experience. Then, proceed to Tokyo. This evening, explore on your own. There are many shops and restaurants nearby your hotel. KEIO PLAZA HOTEL TOKYO (2 Nights) (B) Day 9: Thur, Oct 13 – TOKYO. Full Day at Leisure. Your Hawaii-based tour manager may arrange an “optional” day trip. (B) Day 10: Fri, Oct 14 – TOKYO – HONOLULU. Aftera sumptuous buffet breakfast embark on a full day of discovery! Asakusa is the center of Tokyo’s shitamachi (literally “low city”), one of Tokyo’s districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Ameyoko is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name “Ameyoko” is a short form for “Ameya Yokocho” (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Today’s highlight will be a hands-on, Sushi-Making Class, which will yield your delicious lunch. After visits to Meiji Shrine and the visually stimulating Harajuku shopping district, enjoy your Farewell Dinner at an Izakaya restaurant.
