The Team
The Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club
(SMAC) is a USA Swimming team designed
specifically to foster an environment in which
swimmers can achieve their fullest potential,
dedicated to developing swimmers who can
swim each stroke well. Our program
combines extensive stroke mechanics and
individual attention with conditioning to
achieve this goal.
Tryouts/Practices
SMAC is conducting tryouts at this time for all
ability levels. SMAC offers options for
convenient practice times. Practice times will
fill up quickly, so register now!
All Practices are held at the Waynesboro
YMCA from September - May and from June August practices are held at the War
Memorial Pool in Waynesboro.
Practices are offered after school and on
Saturday mornings.
SMAC offers multiple practices times so that
everyone will have a chance to learn to
love swimming.
The Programs
Following a coach’s evaluation, a swimmer
is placed into an appropriate practice group.
Practice groups are divided according to
age, ability and level of commitment.
Within each group, each swimmer may be
assigned a training lane with other
swimmers of equal ability and approximate
age. This fosters an environment that
challenges the swimmer to excel and
provides for the best possible teaching.

SMAC Swimming
Practice Groups
Mini Marlins: 4-8 years old
This is a beginner level swim group that guides young
athletes looking to make the transition from swim lessons or
summer league into competitive swimming. To join, swimmers must either have swam for a summer league team,
or be able to swim a length of freestyle and backstroke.
This group is designed to refine the four basic competitive
strokes.
Age Group 1: 6-10 years old
This is the first level of the SMAC competitive swimming
program. The focus of this group is based heavily on technique in order to build the fundamentals of all four competitive strokes, as well as the improvement of starts and turns.
Swimmers will be introduced to basic training concepts,
pace clock usage, and overall swimming terminology.
Three practices per week are highly recommended, but not
required for this group. Swimmers must demonstrate a 25 of
each of the four competitive strokes for placement into this
group.
Age Group 2: 9-14 years old
This is the second level of the SMAC competitive swimming
program. This level is for swimmers with a proven record of
practice consistency, meet participation, and achievement.
A strong emphasis will continue to be placed on stroke
technique, and swimmers will be introduced to basic training
sets. This group looks to help the athletes achieve the highest opportunities available. In order to achieve your utmost
potential, maximum practice attendance is encouraged.
Participation in all team meets is recommended. This group
will be introduced to basic Dry land.
Advanced Age Group: 11-14 years old
This training group is for swimmers who have a proven
record of commitment, hard work, and achievement. These
are swimmers who have the desire to progress to the highest training levels of the program. Members of this group will
be committed to reaching their full potential in swimming.
A strong emphasis will be placed on fine-tuning stroke mechanics, the ability to change speeds, overall conditioning,
and racing. Swimmers in this group will also receive dryland
training for core stability, strength, and injury prevention. In
order to advance within the program, a commitment to practice attendance is required. Meet participation is strongly
encouraged for proper development.
