Third annual 6 Corners BBQ Fest returns with all the fixins! The 6 Corners BBQ Fest is returning for its third year on June 15-16 – showcasing a weekend of great BBQ, bands, kids activities and local arts. The fest runs from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday on Milwaukee, just north of Irving Park Road. Beef (Italian sausage, and Italian ice) and Blackhawk BBQ & Seafood (giant turkey legs, burgers). And while patrons are wrist-deep in BBQ sauce, they can stroll the unique marketplace offering goods of all sorts! Also performing on Sunday on the main stage on Sunday is Molehill (pop rock) at 3 p.m. and Pet Lions (indie pop) at 5 p.m., while on the north stage on Sunday there will be a special performance by blues musician Lurrie Bell at 7 p.m. Bell, a Chicago blues guitar legend, will be touring South America later this summer and recently released his new album, “The Devil Ain’t Got No Music.” Professional wrestlers will take to the mats on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s lineup will feature a Battle Royale at 4 p.m. and appearances by Eugene, Gangrel and Mr. USA Tony Atlas at 4:30 p.m. All three wrestlers will return on Sunday at 5 p.m. Audience participation sumo wrestling will take place from noon to 4 p.m. each day. The “Meat on Milwaukee Cookoff!” will return this year – back by popular The music stages will showcase local bands including St. Viator alum Tom Schraeder demand! The neighborhood cooking contest will take place Sunday, June 16, boasting the best backyard chefs. Cooking will begin at 8 AM, judging takes place at 4 PM and and His Ego at 7 p.m. Sunday as well as Warnock, whose lead singer is a Portage the winner will be announced at 6 p.m. with the awarding of the Bungalow Belt. The kids will have a bouncing-blast on the inflatables or get their creative juices flowing with tables of arts and crafts. The family stage will include a great mix of entertainment on both days, including several ethnic and folk dance performances and martial arts demonstrations. Highlights of the schedule on Saturday include Super Stolie at 12:30 p.m., Dennis PaSamba Dance at 1:30 p.m., BSI Tae Kwon Do at 2:30 p.m., Zumba at 3:15 p.m., Tae Kwon Do Demo at 5:45 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. local favorite the Polkaholics will start working the crowd into a frenzy. All of the profits from this year’s fest will be shared with local arts organizations that will be bringing a creative touch to the fest. The National Veterans Arts Museum will feature a participatory arts experience outside the entrance to its museum, 4041 N. Milwaukee. Filament Theatre Ensemble will use perform classic romantic scenes from Shakespeare right among the fest crowd in a performance called “A Muse in Love.” Arts Alive will be host a one-of-a-kind miniature golf experience in the Kids Corner. And Northwest Arts Connection will host a special arts tent. The entrance donation is only $5. All the local businesses at Six Corners host the fest, which s organized by the Six Corners Association. The association was founded by a group of dedicated business owners who initiated several improvement efforts for the business district. On Sunday, the family stage will feature Bubbles Academy presenting Lauren Hubert at 12:30 p.m., CircEsteem at 1:15 p.m., Rico Music & Dance at 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., International Traditional Karate Association at 4 p.m., Rico as Michael Jackson at 6 p.m. and blues guitarist Lurrie Bell at 7 p.m. Fest-goers undoubtedly will not want to miss the great barbeque offerings that will line Milwaukee Avenue. Food vendors will include Chicago BBQ Company (rib sampler, pulled pork), Robinson’s #1 Ribs (baby back ribs, corn on the cob), Texas Thunder (rib sampler, beef brisket), Joe’s Program designed and published by Nadig Newspapers Bungalow Belt at stake in Cook-off The “Bungalow BBQ Belt” will once again be awarded to the winner of the festival’s annual “Meat on Milwaukee” cook-off. The contest will conclude at 6 p.m. on Father’s Day. Volunteers Kenji and Dorie Kearns, who have six different smokers at their Portage Park home, are organizing the contest for the second year in a row. Kenji describes himself as an amateur smoker and said that the idea for the contest grew out of the desire to create a fun way to draw more people to the festival and to give residents from the Northwest Side a platform to showcase their cooking talents. Each of the estimated 5 to 10 contestants will be bring their own equipment to the fest and starting early Sunday morning will be given pork spare ribs and chicken from Jefferson Park’s own Ellengee meats. It will be up to them to add their own seasonings. A group of local restaurateurs will be judging the results. The belt and several great prizes will be awarded. Wrestling matches will be hot at BBQ Fest The 2013 6 Corners BBQ Fest will feature two top independent wrestling organizations and the best fan interaction experience possible, including former WWE superstars on June 15 and 16. Meet former WWE stars Eugene, Gangrel and WWE Hall of Famer Tony Atlas in the Championship Wrestling From Hollywood wrestling ring at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. The mighty men of the mat will meet and greet fans, and maybe they’ll go toe-to-toe if someone looks at them the wrong way. Division 3 Wrestling will hold a 15-man battle royal at 5:30 p.m. Saturday immediately following Championship Wrestling from Hollywood’s show. The winner of the “Battle Royale” will earn the chance to compete later in the evening to become the first-ever D3W National Wrestling Champion. The bell will ring for the Division 3 Wrestling Championship at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, with a special performance of “America The Beautiful” sung by Mariah Pulice from American Idol 2013. You can take on your family members, friends by donning our inflatable sumo wrestling suits in the squared circle from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Cameron Matthews, of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, and Mark Goles, founder of Division 3 Wrestling, have teamed up to create a wrestling tour de force. “With so much wrestling firepower in one place, the heat in the ring might be hotter than the heat of the barbecue grills,” Matthews said. Goles also expected a show that is not to be missed. “The man who emerges from that battle royal is going to really want this championship,” Goles said. “People who see this match will have something to tell their grandchildren about.” Join us Father’s Day Weekend for the Northwest Side’s Premiere Street Fest!
