What makes Dobson Ranch unique? What sets this area apart from other neighborhoods? There are
many reasons; well-kept neighborhoods, family friendly environment, good schools, nearby shopping,
great location and amenities…. lots of amenities. Dobson Ranch has three recreation centers, parks and
playgrounds, tennis, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts, pools, a splashpad and lakes.
One of the great amenities that Dobson Ranch has to offer are the amazing lakes.
Where does the water come from?
Ever wonder how the lakes are maintained? Where does all that water come from? Craig Wilson, the Dobson Ranch Water
Management Director has the answer. “The water used in the Dobson Ranch lakes starts as run-off in the Tonto National Forest.
Once collected first in Roosevelt Lake, the water flows down the Salt River and finally to the Granite Reef Dam. From there the water
flows into the SRP canal system that carries the water to the first of our lakes that form a chain through Dobson Ranch. There the
water resides until it reaches the spillways that control the flow of water from one lake to the next. Along the way some of the water
evaporates and some seeps into the soil with just enough left for the last lake in the chain. In addition, the rain that falls on Dobson
Ranch is collected and channeled into the lakes. All told there are 78 acres of lakes with an abundant fish population, room for
boating and grass lined sidewalks for strolling or bicycle riding.”

With no relief in sight from the daily temperatures until
November, a quick reminder of the amenities that Dobson
Ranch has to offer to keep you cool. Before you reached
my article you may have read Joanna Loftus’ article on the
front page regarding the lakes. Dobson Ranch offers a tour
of lake seven on the Dobson Ranch boat. Read page 12
on how to schedule a tour with one of our certified boat
operators. You may have missed the ice cream social (page
21) at one of our four pools, but you can enjoy the refreshing
waters at any of the three locations. If you’re wondering
about the hours of operation, look at page 15. The hours
of operation will be changing after Labor Day, read Jesse
Wright’s article for information.
All the articles this month are great articles, but here are
a few that I found interesting this month:
What I like about Dobson Ranch is the connections we
all make with one another. On page 11, Good Neighbor
Award, is an example of how neighborly Dobson Ranch
Residents are. If you may have noticed the Mesa School
District has changed the fencing that surrounds the school.
It was done for student safety (page 27). Also, Craig Wilson,
Water Management Director, wrote about conserving
water. He’s looking for your assistance, on page 12, on new
water saving devices. Email him on your successes.
The last two months the Board of Directors asked for
candidates to fill a vacancy on the Board. The Election
Committee interviewed two great candidates on behalf of
the Board of Directors. It would have been great to offer
both of them a seat on the Board but unfortunately only one
seat was available. Mrs. Sarah Funtowicz will be joining
the Board of Directors to fill the term till April 2015. Mrs.
Funtowicz and her family have lived in Dobson Ranch for
20+ years. She teaches in the Mesa School District and
volunteers at Care Partnership in Mesa. Mrs. Funtowicz
enjoys bicycling, running and walking through Dobson
Ranch. In the past she attended organized meetings and
events at Dobson Ranch. Let’s welcome Mrs. Funtowicz
and thank her as she will volunteer her time hosted by
the Ranch. If you would like to volunteer for Dobson
Ranch please contact the office for assistance. We are
always looking for volunteers that want to support their
community.
Construction started at La Casita on August 4th. The
construction is to renovate the restrooms and update some
of the facilities at La Casita. The construction end date
is slotted for September 15. In the meantime, if you are
planning to use the facilities, restrooms are temporarily
located in the south parking lot (just a few steps away).
Staff is working with the City of Mesa on fixing the drain
at Dobson and Baseline (southwest corner) next to the bus
stop. When we receive heavy rains, the area becomes a
large puddle that lasts for days. The city has plans to fix
the situation, so that it will drain properly. This means
that there will be lane restrictions in the near future. The
Association would like to thank Dennis Kavanaugh and
his team for quickly assisting.

Lakes continued from page 1
Wonders of the lakes.
Spend some time at our lakes and you will soon realize how wonderful they are. Ed
Ricci, President of the Dobson Ranch Fish Club has this to offer: “Grasping the wonders
of our Dobson Ranch Lakes is really “in the eyes of the beholder”. The walker will notice
the styled home landscapes and boats which blend with rippling water and abundance of
birds. The naturalist will note the subtle differences between each lake in our chain of eight
lakes, and an elaborate ecology that spans from insects to various fish and fowl. Our lake
system is actually quite a marvel- a gravity flow system balanced by our Water Committee
directing water delivery from the canal system starting at Lake 1 through Lake 8. Seasonal
variables managed by our Water Committee include SRP’s winter drawdown, irrigation,
and monsoon events. And the best part of all, at least for this observer, is the diversity of fish
that swim in our lakes, providing viewing and sporting pleasure for us all. This diversity is
assured by our Association which promotes boating and a fish catch and release program.
Our Dobson Ranch community and lakes system are truly a magical place to partake. “
Discover the lakes!
The lakes are here for you to enjoy. There are walking paths, docks for boating and
fishing, benches for relaxing, picnic tables, outdoor exercise equipment, playgrounds and
well-kept landscaping. You can boat (restrictions apply) and fish (catch and release). Please
check with the Recreation Department for fishing and boating permits. Dobson Ranch has
a wonderful pontoon boat available for tours/rides by a certified operator. Reservations are
required for the pontoon boat (see page 12). Not only are there amenities to enjoy at the
lakes, there are events at the lakes also. Coming up soon is the Kids Fishing Tournament
and Outdoor Expo on Saturday, October 4 from 7 to 11 am at the Los Altos Recreation
Center. Saturday, December 6 is the date for the much anticipated Winter Wonderland and
Lighted Boat Parade at the Saratoga Recreation Center. Watch for upcoming details because
it is a spectacular event you won’t want to miss! It’s time…gather your family and friends or
get away by yourself and discover the wonders of the lakes at Dobson Ranch. Just one more
reason Dobson Ranch is the best to live!

The kids may be back in school, but it is still summer according to the weatherman and we need to keep
cool! The Dobson Ranch pools are open and ready for you to enjoy and there are a variety classes to sign up for
both indoors and out. There is a big recreation section in this issue and a calendar on the back page with all the
details!
As fall approaches, the days are getting shorter, so it’s a perfect time in the morning and evening to take a stroll along one
of the lovely lake paths. As you may have noticed on the cover, the lakes here at Dobson Ranch are one of the great amenities
that can be enjoyed any time of the year.
Now this part will really get you excited! Start marking your calendars for all the big Fall events coming up in Dobson
Ranch. You won’t want to miss a single one! September will usher in the events with the popular Golf Tournament held at
the Dobson Ranch Golf Course. Sign up early as this event fills up fast! Then October will be a full month with the Fishing Tournament/Outdoor Expo, Fall Break Camp, Clean Up, Shred and Garage Sale, Pancake Breakfast and the Halloween
Spooktacular will finish out the month. (I am working on my costume for that one already).
I will be at most of the Dobson Ranch events and would love to meet you. I will be the one with the camera and notepad! I
am always looking for content for the paper. If you live by a “Good Neighbor” or know someone with a
“Green Thumb”, submit their information. Have you “Tried and Liked” a great business or eatery near
Dobson Ranch? Let me know! I know there are great cooks in Dobson Ranch so send me your recipes
and I will include them in the paper. I also welcome comments, questions, suggestions, photos and kind
words!

Assessment Reminder
2014 Assessment
Quarterly is $134.55,
Semi-annual is $269.10
Annually is $538.20
Assessments are due on the first of each quarter. A late
fee of $30 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not
received by the 20th of the first month of each quarter
(January, April, July and October). Delinquent interest
will accrue on any unpaid balance.
If you are interested in paying your assessment monthly
through ACH (auto debit to your checking account) please
complete the form on the front page of our website and
return to the administrative office along with a voided
check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month.
There are several other options for paying your
assessments:
1) Annual or Quarterly payments can be made by check,
cash, debit or credit card. Please be sure to include your
payment coupon when mailing your payment in. You
can make a one-time payment on our website if paying
by debit or credit card.
2) For recurring payments using a debit or credit card,
there is a processing site that you can access from
the Dobson Association web page located at www.
dobsonranchhoa.com. From there click on the payment
tab.
3) You may send in monthly recurring payments if using
your automatic bill pay. You will have to set up the
payment online through your bill pay program. Please
be sure to include your account number and property
address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Labor Day Schedule
Administration will be closed for the Labor Day Holiday,
September 1. Recreation staff will be available from 8 am – 6
pm at the administration office for recreation functions such
as movie tickets, homeowner keys, room rentals, etc. After
Labor Day, the recreation centers will change to winter hours.
As of September 2 the hours will be: Monday – Saturday 8
am to 7 pm and Sunday 10 am – 5 pm at La Casita, Saratoga,
and Los Altos.

Board Highlights
The July 17 meeting of the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors began with the Pledge of
Allegiance, roll call was performed, and with quorum being met the meeting was called
to order by President Susan Powers at 7:00 p.m. Board membership present were President Susan Powers, Vice President Sandra Murray, Secretary Stacy Holmstedt, Treasurer
Laurie Moe, Bob Radisich, Frank Mizner, and Ron Ricci.
Addressing the Board under homeowner’s comments homeowner Fred Hurst
thanked the Board for fixing the lighting around Lake 8.
For the President’s report Susan Powers reported that a thank you from the Dobson
Dolphins has been received for the HOA’s sponsorship and that staff has attended numerous seminars regarding the changes in legislation that affect homeowners’ associations.
The June Board of Directors minutes were approved.
The Director’s Report was given by Executive Director, David Jones. David discussed
that the Lakes’ sediment study will be conducted, the last study was completed in 2003;
staff has been accident free for 276 days; palm tree trimming is being worked on, due to
recent monsoon storms some of the trimming has been pushed back; the Associations’
pontoon boat is in the water and CC&R inspections have been conducted; graffiti has
been painted over; lights have been rewired on Monte pathway; Los Altos pool deck had
chipping and has been repaired; when the fountain was installed at Frisbee Park the motor burned up due to fluctuating electricity at the SRP box, the Association is working
with SRP on the claim; a backflow was stolen from Frisbee Park, it has been replaced
and spray painted; Villa Chica HOA has been contacted regarding the unfinished fences
along Price which abut their property; the Ice Cream Social is 7-19; the Golf Tournament is coming up on September 27; the event signage is being updated; and the Fishing
Tournament will take place on October 4.
Commission reports were presented. For the Member Services / Marketing Commission Stacy Holmstedt reported that the RFP for the website has been sent to vendors
and the hope is to be ready to go forward by the August meeting. Two applications for
the Board of Directors’ vacant seat have been received, interviews will be conducted July
22. For the Finance Commission Laurie Moe presented financial summary highlights
for June. For the Master Planning Commission Bob Radisich reported that the spread
sheet passed out reflects the Reserve Study item changes decided upon at the last meeting, Los Altos tennis court lights and pool decking were both discussed. For the Water
Management Committee, Craig Wilson reported that more monsoon rain is anticipated
so the lake levels are being allowed to drop and that the lake sediment study will take
place so that we can move sediment which is near the valves.
For New Business Executive Director, David Jones, discussed the changes to the State
law and how these changes affect the Associations’ Rental Policy and collections procedures. The Board adopted the new Rental Policy and the Collections policy will be
revised to be reviewed at the next Board of Directors meeting.
Lake 7 fountain was discussed and it was approved to replace the fountain in an
amount not to exceed $7,200.
With there being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:28 pm. The
next Board of Directors meeting will be held August 21 at 7 pm at La Casita.

Board Adopts Rental Policy
THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION DBA DOBSON RANCH HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
RENTAL POLICY AND RENTAL FEE ASSESSMENT
The following written Rules and Restriction are adopted for the Rental Policy and Fee Assessment. This policy is
intended to comply with all applicable federal, state, county, city laws and ordinances. Any conflict between the
provisions herein shall be resolved in favor of the law. Further, these rules are intended to supplement The Dobson
Association Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&R’s) and/or any bylaw provision that address the topic
set forth below, not to amend them. In the event of inconsistency or conflict between this policy and the CC&R’s,
Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws of the Association, the CC&R’s, Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws provisions
shall supersede and apply.
I.
Introduction: In the interest of protecting homeowners and their families, preserving property values and
enhancing the quality of life within the community, the Association has developed a standard set of rules and
procedures addressing the renting/leasing of homes within the community. The following material outlines
the rules, requirements and responsibilities of homeowners wishing to rent or lease property within The Dobson Association. Tenants may not have full knowledge of and thus not be in compliance with the Declaration
of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, and with the provisions of other governing documents including
these Rules & Regulations. Conclusion that many owners and property managers are not providing copies
of the Association’s governing documents to prospective and actual tenants or even informing them that
they exist. This causes confusion and inadvertent non-compliance by tenants. Problems are caused by this
practice that can be easily avoided. Furthermore, some owners do not inform the Association when they are
renting out their property, and/or do not provide the Association with any information about their tenants.
The Association then experiences difficulty in communicating with owner and/or the tenant about questions
or issues. Therefore, owners and their tenants must comply with the following Rules and Regulations when
homes are rented.
II. FHA Statement: Nothing in this policy is intended to act to discriminate against any protected class, to
wrongfully deprive anyone of housing or to violate any provision of the Fair Housing Act (FHA).
III. Definitions
1. Association – The Dobson Association
2. Rental(s) –Any home/property within the Association that is rented, leased or occupied by residents
other than the legal owner.
3. Landlord – The legal owner that is leasing or renting their property.
4. Tenant – The resident/occupants that is leasing or renting from the legal owner.
5. Future Homeowners – Homeowners who purchase a property within the Association after these rules
and regulations are adopted.
6. Agent/Manager – A designated representative of the legal owner
7. Dwelling – House, Condo, Townhome or other place of residence within the Association.
RENTAL POLICY
All owners who rent or who are considering renting their home are subject to these Rules and Regulations. This
condition also pertains to instances where the owner rents to a family member. Any dwelling unit may be let to a
tenant from time-to-time by the Owner, subject to the provisions of the Covenants Conditions and Restrictions, all
Policies, Rules & Regulations of the Association.
I.
Registration Form – The Owner is responsible for the completion of the Tenant/Occupant Registration form.
The form is available at the Association office or online at www.DobsonRanchHOA.com. All rental property
shall be registered with the Association within fifteen (15) days of the start of the lease or when the tenant
moves into the dwelling. The Owner will provide the following information to the Association:
a.
Owners contact information.
b.
List of names all tenants over eighteen (18) years of age and contact information for any adult occupying the dwelling.
c.
The time period of the lease, including the beginning and ending dates of the tenancy.
II.
Owner To Provide Governing Documents To Tenant – At or prior to signing a lease agreement, the owner or
owner’s agent will provide to the tenant(s) copies of the Covenants Conditions and Restrictions, all Policies,
Rules & Regulations of the Association (hereafter collectively referred to as the “governing documents”), and
any amendments to them. [Copies of the governing documents may be obtained from the office of the Association at 2719 S. Reyes, Mesa, Arizona 85202, or from on the website at www.DobsonRanchHOA.com]

My husband and I bought our home this past October
and right off the bat Jim and Shari Mccann made us feel
welcome to the community and neighborhood. Coming from
a neighborhood where you hardly know your neighbors names after 5 years, it was refreshing
and what we were hoping Dobson Ranch was all about! I believe it is the neighbors who make
Dobson Ranch’s community feel like family and they sure do a great job!
Whenever we need anything, we know we can run across the street and ask them. Whether
it is to borrow a dolly or to ask advice on what is the right type of plant for the season, Jim and
Shari are readily there and want to help. Before we even moved in they helped us find the right
paint color by giving us their Dunn Edwards paint samples and have continued to help us out. It
is nice to have neighbors who not only care about keeping their property and home looking nice,
but care about the neighbors and neighborhood. They are some of the kindest most caring people
a neighbor could ask for and I think our whole neighborhood would agree!

The curb appeal of our community depends on each resident
maintaining their property as completely as possible. For those who keep their homes and
yards well maintained, the association thanks you for your efforts and good examples. We
encourage all residents to pay particular attention to the following maintenance items:
• Exterior paint. Paint is a quick and easy way to keep your property looking fresh, new,
and clean. It will also protect against corrosion, weathering, and insects.
• Landscaping. Landscaping is extremely important to our community’s curb appeal.
Remove dead plants and branches. Keep shrubs properly pruned and flowers welltended. Keep lawns mowed, edged, and free of debris.
• Roofs. Ensure your roofs are properly maintained and cleaned.
• Driveways. Repair cracks, pitted or flaking surfaces, and other concrete problems.
Remove weeds from sidewalk joints and debris from driveways and sidewalks.
• Trash and Recycle Containers. Store trash and recycle containers out of sight from the
street or neighboring property. Do not use driveways or carports for storage.
• Gutters and Downspouts. Keep them cleaned out to prevent overflowing and flooding.
Ensure they are neatly hung.
• Window Boxes, Awnings and Decks. Replace worn or damaged fixtures, check fittings
for stability, and ensure paint is in good repair.
• Mailboxes. Mailbox is securely standing and in good repair.
• Utilitarian Items. Hoses and other utilitarian items are stored out of view.
• Recreational Vehicles. RV’s, trailers, boats, etc. are stored out of sight and / or off
premises.
• Inoperable or stored vehicles. Remove stored or inoperable vehicles.
• Fencing. Inspect your fencing, repair or replace when worn, discolored, or unsightly.
A little attention goes a long way in keeping our community looking fabulous, as
well as adhering to the communities’ documents (Covenants, Codes, & Restrictions and
Architectural Guidelines). Please remember – any changes to the approved appearance
of your property requires submission to and approval of the Architectural Control
Committee. Application for Architectural Review forms are available in the administration
office and on our website, dobsonranchhoa.com under the Resource tab.

Water Must Be Conserved

Explain to someone from California that in the summer they
switch to Mountain Standard Time and see what a look you engender.
If they were to ask you in turn how much water we use in Arizona
and you replied with pride less than 100 gallons per capita per day (gpcd) you
might be amazed at the wonder in their eyes. Some places in the western states, and
yes California is a western state, are being required to limit daily use to less than 65
gpcd. How do they, and would it be possible for us to reach that threshold?
Now, the amount of water used when spread over the whole city comes to more
than 100 gpcd as municipal use is included in the calculation of water used per
capita. This includes the water used on public golf courses, the landscaping the City
maintains, public pools, and other water uses. Individual residential properties
might reach the 60 gpcd value with little effort, 43 gpcd with a lot of effort, but 100
gpcd for our community has been a real challenge. Conservation in the home must
make up for the city services we expect and use. We want fire protection, we want
to modify our desert environment, and
we want our schools to offer swimming,
our parks to offer fishing and all the
other amenities that make the City of
Mesa a good place for Dobson Ranch
residents.
So how do we achieve what our
western neighbors are now required
to achieve. This is not just the drought
we are now contending with, we need
to respond to the long term trends that
go along with climate change. Climate
change is not new, we see it in the prehistoric civilizations that flourished here and
then disappeared. Can we better manage the way we deal with similar changes to
our climate?
One way we can impact our use of water is through our homeowners association.
Dobson Ranch has adopted several innovative strategies to conserve water. Our
Reverse Season Irrigation Program allows us to save water in the summer by under
watering the summer turf and using those savings to have a winter rye grass for
our parks. Dobson Ranch has installed irrigation controllers to minimize the water
applied to the Ranch landscape; just enough to keep the landscape healthy. The
Ranch has also identified water saving opportunities that can assist residential
savings, like the smart controller program offered by SRP and further supported
by the HOA.
The focus of the water conservation effort fostered by Dobson Ranch can be seen
at the annual Water Conservation Fair held each year in April as part of the state
wide Water Conservation Month programs. For several years now, vendors offering
water conservation strategies have offered suggestions and products to foster water
conservation.
One water conservation product I discussed last month is the dual flush toilet.
Several new products are now available to convert an existing toilet to include a
dual flush feature that allows different amounts of water to be used when flushing
a toilet. The toilets installed in our homes were built for the homes of the 70’s and
80’s. They still work just fine, are comfortable and fit fine in our homes. So why
replace them when a simple device can dramatically reduce the amount of water
needed to flush the waste away? Many of the new products on the market can be
installed directly into our existing toilets with little effort in a very short time. Of
course when remodeling a part of the house, installing new toilets which reduce
water consumption makes a lot of sense.
If you have tried one of these new devices, send me an email (wmd@
dobsonranchhoa.com) with your experiences; including installation, use and
savings. I hope we can come to a consensus as to what works best on Dobson
Ranch. If there are success stories, I plan to use those stories to foster a program to
offer either the product itself or perhaps to find rebates to encourage residents to
convert their toilets to dual flush. In that way we can show that we as part of the
west are continuing to strive to keep water abundant to those who use it wisely.

Copper and Brass Theft

You have probably read or heard about the
theft of copper and brass around the valley. A
few years ago, someone stole all the copper letters that spelled out Dobson Ranch
on our entry walls. While the recyclers pay pennies on the dollar, the replacement was costly. A new group of thieves is back in our neighborhood. They have
targeted the copper wire in our bollard and walkway lights. Sections of wire
along the Monte Pathway walk between Saratoga Lake 7 and the end of Lake
7, as well as, at Laguna Park, have been cut and pulled out of the conduits. The
brass back flow prevention devices that we use on our irrigation systems have
also been cut out and taken. The replacement costs add up. A new back flow assembly for Frisbee Park cost over a $1000 just for the material. If you see anyone
that is not in a Dobson Ranch maintenance uniform working on a perceived
electrical or irrigation issue in a common area, call the administration office at
480-831-8314. Also note, our staff does not work after 4 pm during the week or
on weekends, nor do outside contractors work anywhere without the presence of
Dobson Association staff.
Until grass clippings become the next target, the landscape/maintenance department would appreciate your awareness and help on this issue.
Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Information
• A one-time “complimentary” pontoon ride per property is available to residents.
• Usage of the pontoon boat is available to residents in good standing. Residency
and Homeowners insurance verification must be provided. Payment is required
at the time of reservation.
• Reservations should be made seven days in advanced and are subject to staff availability.
• Cancellation is subject to a fee if made less than 72 hours in advance.
• Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum.
• Capacity is up to 10 guests whether adults or children. A certified operator will
be provided by the association. Children under 14 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Children under the age of 8 are required to wear a life vest
at all times. Only five children under 8 will be permitted on boat at one time for
safety.
• Food and beverages are permitted in non-breakable containers. You will be responsible for clean-up.
• Smoking is not permitted aboard the pontoon boat for the enjoyment of all guests,
most of all safety.
• Pets are not permitted.
• Fishing is not permitted while the pontoon is under way.
• Guests are required to remain seated during the tour. Also directions given by the
Captain must be followed.
• Management reserves the right to cancel any reservation. All reservations are subject to weather conditions.

out facilities for private rentals
but renting of chairs and tables
not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up
to 150 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The
resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita
Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 is due in cash or credit
card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5
per table. Reservations can be made through the Recreation Department at 480831-7464 and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

You all may have noticed the recreation side of the building
at La Casita has been shut down for renovations. If you need
to purchase anything the administration office will be open
for your recreation needs. The pool area and splash pad will remain open
throughout the remodeling process and there will be portable restrooms located next to the volleyball court just off the Grande Room. It will be well
worth the inconvenience once the work is completed.
It’s hard to believe with the temperatures in the 100’s that fall is just around
the corner. That means the weather should be cooling off (hopefully), football is starting (Go Packers) and Dobson Ranch is kicking off our upcoming fall events. We will start the season right with our 10th Annual Golf
Tournament. Are there any golfers out there? The Golf Tournament event
is Saturday, September 27 at Dobson Ranch Golf Course. Registration has
started at La Casita Recreation Center. Please sign up if you are interested
in playing. You can sign up individually or as a foursome. We also have our
Outdoor Expo on Saturday, October 4 from 7 am-11 am. There will be a kids
fishing tournament, fun and prizes. School has started and your children and
grandchildren will be looking for things to do during fall break. We are offering a Fall Break Camp for ages 6-12 year olds Monday-Friday October 6-10 at
Saratoga Recreation Center. Lastly, this is just a reminder our summer hours
will end on Labor Day, September 2.
Winter facility hours will be 8 am-7 pm Monday –Saturday and 10 am-5
pm on Sunday. Come out and enjoy the splash pad at La Casita before it closes

become a part of the everlasting La Casita Preschool
family. Speaking of families that is one of our first
themes this year. We will be taking a look at all different
types of family members, dynamics and traditions. We’ll be doing some
activities where the children take it home, complete it with their family and
then bring it back to display in the classroom. The children love showing off
their pictures of themselves and their family members! Here is an example

instructors to ensure a positive, successful, and fun experience. You will acquire
and develop new playing skills and meet new tennis playing friends. Sharing the

The Dobson Ranch Tennis courts are for exclusive use of Dobson Ranch residents
and of the Association tennis professional. Other professionals are not to teach
classes, lessons or clinics on our Association courts at any time. To ensure the Ranch
tennis program remains viable, Ranch residents should consult the Association
Tennis pro for all tennis instruction. No outside tennis professionals are permitted
on Association courts.
Junior Learn to Play
The mission of Dobson Ranch junior tennis is to provide quality instruction in a
fun and friendly atmosphere with a multilevel juniors program from the youngest
beginners to sanctioned tournament players. Each tennis student’s placement is
based on age, experience and a challenge ladder. Classes combine energized drills,
fun games, match play and conditioning. Our goal is for tennis students to reach a
higher level of play and learn to love a sport they will play for a lifetime. Sharing the
experience can make it more enjoyable, so invite a friend to join you on the courts
and learn tennis together!
Tennis Tots Ages 4-6 Fall Classes 2014
For the young player just starting tennis. Tennis students will learn basic hand-eye
coordination, stroke production, footwork skills, and the rules of the game. Classes
meet once a week for 5 weeks. Each class is 45-minutes on our specially designed
junior tennis courts. Smaller youth tennis equipment is used to develop tennis skills
fast!

Beginners Juniors Ages 7-12 - Fall Classes 2014
This class is designed for students to learn how to play tennis. All tennis strokes
will be taught along with rules of the game and basic strategy. The requirements to
progress to Challengers level is for the students to demonstrate ability to consistently
serve into the correct service box, keep the score, properly rotate, and sustain a rally.
Classes meet twice a week for one hour for 4 weeks. Age appropriate equipment is
used to develop tennis skills fast!

July Summer Tennis Social
“Bring on the HEAT.” That was the winning attitude of the brave Dobson
Ranch tennis crew at the July 19th social at La Casita. The competition was
invigorating... Gwen can attest to that... after one set of beautiful tennis, the
sun started to get the best of her, but not until she hit a perfectly formed
backhand down the line to clinch the first round victory. Way to go Gwen.
The socials are fun. Anyone can come. There are some pretty intense
matches, but there’s nothing wrong with that either. Coach Doug will make
sure you play with people at your level and sometimes a little above your
level, but that can be really fun too; it can give you a glimpse into your
tennis future, if you keep practicing and can also present opportunities
you may have not seen before to hit a memorable shot like the masterful
Marshal Ciarlino volley in round 1 that stopped on a dime and stopped his
opponents in their tracks.
Our next tennis social is Saturday, August 23rd, where it will be even
more toasty folks, but let’s try to get three courts going (12 people). We’ll
start at 7:30 am sharp to keep the heat away as long as we can. Thank you to
the Rec department for supplying the tennis crew with tennis balls, Granola
Bars and ice-cold water for our tennis socials.
Thanks to Pistol Pat Curtin for showing us how a 4.5 women’s interclub
player goes about her business and to Cheryl and Linda for bringing their A
game and showing us how hard work can pay off. Thanks of course to Lynn
who is always there to support the tennis program with encouragement and
graceful shot making on the tennis court.
The crazy, hot sun didn’t wear down Bob Lynn, that’s for sure. He played
an extra set of doubles with Cheryl, Linda and me after everyone else had
said their goodbyes, then he played another set of singles against the coach
(me)… then we both visited the pool at La Casita and partook in the Ice
Cream Social, yum. See you all August 23rd for the next social. Let me know

Preschool Summer Camp
The La Casita Preschool Summer Camp was full of happy campers this
summer as they played, explored, created and had a great time. Children
learn best when they are having fun and our preschool is always having a lot

What a great summer this has been and another year of La Casita Summer
Camp has come to a close. The kids had a blast swimming, making crafts,
going on field trips, having visits by special guests, playing games, watching

Ice Cream Social
Over 110 Ranch residents cooled off in the La Casita pool and enjoyed
some yummy ice cream at the recent Ice Cream Social. There was a water
safety presentation, games, prizes and lots of ice cream. The event may be
over, but there is still plenty of time to make a splash at a Dobson Ranch pool

Dobson Dolphins Made a Big Splash this Summer!

Summer has gone by in a splash and the Dobson Dolphins Swim Team
made sure there was plenty of splashing going on! The 34th season of
summer swimming didn’t seem like it lasted 8 weeks. From May 27th
through July 18th, 152 Dolphins filled the Los Altos Pool from 7 am to
noon every Tuesday through Friday. We welcomed 54 first year swimmers
this season and had our largest ever group of teenagers with 40 swimmers
showing up at 7am! (Surprisingly, not all of them made it every day!)
Swimming in the East Valley Swim League again this summer, the
Dolphins hosted two home meets at Los Altos Pool and 4 away meets
all over the Southeast Valley. The last meet of the season was the EVSL
Finale Meet hosted by RIO Swim Club and held at McClintock Pool. We
made another strong showing as our swimmers were well prepared by
Head Coach Carly Daniels and Assistant Coaches Annie Pinkerton, David
Fugger, Erin Mortensen and Brandon Turley. About a dozen swimmers
participated in the Arizona Parks and Recreation (APRA) meet on July
26th.
In order to prepare our high school swimmers for their fall season
Coach Carly started two hour practices for some of our older swimmers.
Swimmers attending Dobson High, Marcos de Niza, Mesa Prep and Seton
Catholic all took advantage of the strenuous workouts. This season also
saw the beginning of Dolphins In Training, DIT, formalizing the volunteer
coach program made up of experienced swimmers who help the younger
swimmers. Led by our two 11th season veteran’s, Karissa and Daniel, 2 or
3 volunteers jump in the pool to help out with the youngest swim groups.
Our families are so wonderful! Every season they help fundraise and
this season we had great turnouts for our car wash in Dairy Queen’s
parking lot, Barros Pizza Night and our annual Stroke a thon. This year
our swimmers blew our fundraising goal out of the water! 104 swimmers
swam 7006 lengths of the pool with 75 swimmers turning in pledges.
Austin C. swam 2 miles in 1 hour and was our long distance champion
& our top pledge earner! Elise and Adrian S. were our top family pledge
earners. Many thanks to all of our swimmers and donors.
Speaking of thanks, our sponsors really do make it possible for the
Dobson Dolphins Swim Team to meet our budget. We are so grateful
to Dobson Ranch HOA, the Mesa Hohokam’s, Jones Family Dentistry,
Suzanne Vogrin and Barros Pizza for their generosity.

August has never been one of my favorite months. In fact, it has probably
been one of my least favorite months, except for April! (April was the mud season...no snowmobiling… too early for fishing...business was bad!)
Having lived the first fifty years of my life in far Northern Wisconsin, August signaled the beginning of Fall...and that meant all the tourists in Northern
Wisconsin were heading South...which meant that business in our grocery store
would drop by about fifty percent! And even worse than that...schools were going to reopen after Labor Day...and when you have eight kids...school supplies
and especially back to school clothing bills were astronomical!
For Arizona residents...August is a “mean” month... especially if you are
a rather recent transplant from the North to Arizona. I say “mean” because
up North August means cooler weather...but here in the desert August simply
means that there will still be at least two more scorching hot months!!! August
teases us with a promise of a cooler Fall...that really won’t come to November!
The Dobson Ranch Retiree’s Club will continue with most of their indoor
activities, but hiking, biking and picnics will remain on hiatus until early November.
But in November the Club’s activity calendar once again fills up with twentyfour schedule monthly activities.
If you have recently retired and you are looking for things to do...wanting to
meet new friends...then attending our General Meeting on Monday September
8th would be a great way of getting involved and getting all set for all of our Fall
and Winter activities.

The week began with phone
calls. Gloria Locke took two
groups and I called the rest. A
little scary when the first round
yielded a group of four!
Gloria did not do much better
with two but as the week wore on
we ended up with 18 ! I messed
the ladies schedule up a bit as I was told to have
everyone show up by 11:00 instead of the usual
11:30 due to how quickly the restaurant fills up.
Cheddars was not kidding. Most of our ladies
met the 11:00 start time and sure enough by
11:35 customers were waiting outside for an
open table! I took Diane’s idea of something
for center pieces and used them to reserve our
tables. It worked.
I checked with everyone as the
plates emptied up and all thought
the service, prices and variety of
food choices was perfect. The 3.99
Margaritas were a big hit, too!
The manager stepped into our
area and welcomed everyone and
told all they were pleased we came
and to return anytime. There was lots of visiting, table hopping and laughter
and overall a good time was had by all.
All in all a success and as for me, one down and three to go. I am going to
move before I EVER volunteer for any long term project again. Those who do
this month after month and year after year should be heralded and praised.
They have my humble and sincere thanks.

Patty had an exciting birthday...
she went skydiving for the first time with Red Rock Skydiving in Cottonwood/Sedona. You
jump from 14,500 feet. What a beautiful vista as you float to the ground. She wants to do it
again!!!
We again had some sad news...Tanya Andrew’s sister and one of our new members,
passed away. Bonnie moved here last year to live with Tanya. She was a friendly and sweet
lady. We wish Tanya and her family our condolences and prayers.

Maricopa County Democratic Party Field Organizer. Michael Martinez, National Chair of the Young Democrats of America (YDA)
College Caucus.
Christine Helen Dyster, who grew up in Tempe, LD18, is now
working as Maricopa County Democratic Party Field Organizer
to coordinate the grass-roots efforts of the County Legislative Districts for the November 2014 election. Christine is an able leader who has been politically involved
for many years including work with Democratic campaigns of Congressman Harry
Mitchell, Representative Andrew Sherwood, and is currently striving to “turn LD18
blue”. She is a member of the LD18 Executive Board, a Democratic State Committee
Member, and Precinct Committeeman. Christine is a recent graduate from Wheaton
College in Massachusetts with a B.A. in Political Science.
Michael Martinez, current National Chair of the Young Democrats of America (YDA) College Caucus and member of the YDA
National Committee, has worked hard-and-smart to accomplish so
much already professionally and politically in his young life. He
graduated from ASU in May 2014 with B.S. in Political Science and
he is a 2014 candidate for Justice of the Peace in West Mesa, Legislative District 26! For Kyrsten Sinema’s campaign, he was a Fundraising Intern in 2013, as well as a Junior Staffer on the Arizona State Senate where he
assisted a policy advisor on the Democratic Staff in the Appropriations and Education
Committee.
YDA “…is the largest youth-led, national, partisan political organization. YDA
mobilizes young people under the age of 36 to participate in the electoral process,
influences the ideals of the Democratic Party, and develops the skills of the youth
generation to serve as leaders at the local and national level. Our 150,000+ members,

Fishing Club

The fish are biting. Yup…Even when the
water temperature is 84 degrees. But you
typically won’t catch them when the sun
is shining. Try early in the morning or at
dusk into nighttime, or under cloud cover.
Soft plastics are working for bass. Try the
drop shot and shaky head rigs. Always try
topwater early or late- although this has not
been a steady pattern as of late. Fishermen- please release your fish immediately
back to the water. There is not much time for a fish picture in this heat. Besides
the needed rainfall, the monsoons are beneficial in stirring up and oxygenating
the water. Fishing under cloud cover before a monsoon hits could be productive.
The Dobson Ranch Fish Club is working hard to assure another very successful
Kid’s Fishing Tournament and Outdoor Days Event on Saturday October
4. We will be constructing our own tank this year, which will provide years
of use. Additionally, we will be coordinating fish stocking for this tank with
the Association’s fall stocking program. The Fish Club is also looking to place
additional fish habitat in our lakes. If you have interest in joining the Club, our
next meeting will be at the Saratoga Clubhouse at 7 pm on August 19, or email

The Recreation department at La Casita will be closed for
renovations from August 4 through September 15. The pool will
be open Monday through Friday 8 am – 8 pm, Saturday 8 am –
9 pm and Sunday 9 am – 8 pm. During this time all recreation
functions such as movie tickets, homeowner keys, room rentals,
etc., will be handled in the Administration department, Monday
through Friday 8 am – 8 pm, Saturday 8 am – 9 pm and Sunday
9 am – 8 pm. Winter hours for Recreation will start September 2.

day of class at their campuses for preschool through Jr.
High this year. Dobson Montessori boasts the top valley
standardized test scores but those are not the true goals
of a Montessori education. “We educate the whole child
and include organic gardening, animals, monthly field trips, ceramics, drama,
overnight camping experiences, and much more in our curriculum,” reports
principal Suzanne Woodford. Classes feature a 1-8 teacher child ratio. Limited

The 2014-2015 school year is here! We have a fantastic school for students!
School Hours:
The school day begins at 7:45 a.m. every day. The school day ends at 2:15 every
week day except on Wednesday. On Wednesday our school day ends at 1:45 p.m.
For safety and supervision, students may not be on campus until 7:25 a.m.
Curriculum Night:
The Washington Curriculum Night is Thursday, August 28th. Our teachers
love to share data, curriculum and strategies used inside and outside the classroom
to reach academic success. We have excellent strategies for intervention and enrichment to offer each student.
End of the Day:
I would like to personally thank you for your support during our school release
each day. We have the task of making sure that our students get home safely. We
have a large bus pick up area to assist with students riding home in comfort. Our
parent drop off and pick up area runs across the front of our campus and often lines
Isabella Avenue. We sincerely apologize for additional traffic at release time. Our
system does move quickly and efficiently once the school bell rings. Please be cautious when traveling Isabella Avenue near 2:00 p.m. Student safety is our number
one goal!

Mesa Public Schools
When Franklin at Alma and Washington Elementary School students return for fall
semester on Aug. 6, they’ll notice a big change to their campuses: perimeter fencing that
was installed over the summer.
The two projects are part of a Mesa Public Schools districtwide student safety initiative
that resulted from a safety and threat analysis the district conducted in February 2013, two
months after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
According to district Director of School Safety and Security Allen Moore, “The study
showed that many of our campuses allowed free access from any direction. This posed a
threat from a variety of elements including predators, non-custodial parents or any opportunist who could easily enter our campuses undetected.
“While a perimeter fence will not deter all possible incidents from occurring, it will
tremendously enhance student safety by requiring everyone to enter through the front
office, making our campuses more secure by preventing undetected access.”

Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign
Underway to Save Lives
The 8th Annual Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign is underway with a goal of collecting 375,000 bottles of water to help
the homeless and unsheltered during the extreme summer heat.
“The Hydration Donation Campaign is a very easy way to help the vulnerable in our
community. For less than five dollars to buy a case of water, the donation will definitely
save lives over the next few months,” United Food Bank Interim President and CEO
Ginny Hildebrand said.
Residents can donate water at various drop-off locations. Here are the closest locations

Dobson High School Construction
What is going on at the Dobson High football field? The concession stands are as old
as the campus and were more than adequate when the campus was built, but they did not
meet current requirements to serve any hot food items. The bathrooms were in disrepair,
etc. etc. The booster club runs the concession stands to raise money for the athletic teams
and also sell concessions at other events for the clubs but are unable to raise the kind of
money they would like to because the current facility has limits to what can be sold. Since
all of the plumbing needed to be redone in the concession stands, the Mesa Public School
district decided a tear down/redesign would be the better option. So, the booster club will
be getting a brand new facility to operate out of. They will be able to serve meals and not
just snack items. All of the clubs and athletic teams will benefit from the new concession
stands. The new facilities should be completed before the first Varsity home football game
that will happen around the second week of September. Please come out and support the
Dobson High Mustangs at upcoming football games. All of the athletic schedules are on
the Dobson High School web page.

makeup since 1986. He is considered one of the best in the Phoenix
area. I was referred by a friend after many conversations about
how great her eyeliner looked. I made an appointment, had my
upper and lower eyelids done and I am so happy I did! I wake up in
the morning and my eyes look a little bit brighter… even without
any makeup! It is especially nice to get out of the swimming
pool or go hiking and look like I have some makeup on. I would

The Trouble With Ticks

Ticks are an increasing and
ongoing problem in Arizona.
While they can be found yearround, they are more prominent
after seasonal rains. Minimally,
ticks are itchy and bothersome to
both animals and people; but more importantly, ticks can transmit
several different types of diseases.
Tick Borne Diseases
Tick borne diseases such as; Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted
Fever, and Lyme disease are the most common diseases found in
Arizona.
• Ehrlichiosis can result in severe anemia, destruction of the platelets,
and can collapse the immune system. Left untreated, this disease
can be fatal to your pet.
• Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, transmitted by Arizona’s most
common brown dog tick, can result in fever, chills, muscle ache,
and lameness.
• Lyme disease which can result in lameness, swollen joints, fatigue,
fevers, and swelling of the lymph nodes is more common in our
higher elevations in late winter and early spring.
Prevention is our number one protection against spreading ticks
