Jones landed his 13.15 pound channel catfish on Saturday. Jones and all the other Tournament anglers competed individually for big catfish with cash prizes awarded for the four largest fish weighed each hour and bonuses paid to the those catching the largest seven fish overall. Including the hourly payout, Jones collected a total of $5,400 for his fish. This year’s payout for all hourly and tournament top finishers was $24,000. Larry Jenkins of Dangerfield, TX took second place and pocketed $2,400 in hourly and bonus money for an 8.72 pound channel cat weighed during the fourth fishing hour on Saturday. Thomas Roedell of Mooreland, OK captured third place and a $1,400 reward for his 8.28 pound channel cat that he caught on Sunday. Roger Stroman of Emory, TX placed fourth with a 7.96 pound channel worth a $400 payday. Johnny Brown of Lindale pocketed $300 for his 5th place 7.88 pound cat. Rodney Brantley of Sulphur Springs, TX followed in 6th place with a 7.57 pound catfish and rounding out the top seven was James Nugent of Weatherford, TX with a nice 6.92 pounder. The top youth angler were Austin Alleman of Flower Mound, TX with a 5.49 pound channel cat. He was followed closely by Ross Brown of Lindale, with a 5.10 pounder. Priscilla Harmon of Lindale, TX took top ladies honors with 6.73 East Fork pounds. Joe Marler of Boyce, LA topped all other seniors with a 6.15 pound channel. For the past six years a donation has been made to an organization or group whose efforts support the mission of the LFSA. This year a portion of the proceeds has been donated to the Rainbow Shower Project in Quitman, TX. This project supports Child Protective Services in its efforts to protect children. The Shower Project is building a facility where children can be taken when they are removed from an unsafe environment and need to be showered and provided clothing and other essentials. Sponsoring Lake Fork Catfish Guide Stan Kuhn July 2014 July is HOT HOT HOT on Lake Fork! The bass fishing couldn’t be better as we head into the summer. If you can stand the heat you’ll want to head this way for some trophy bass action. It’s also a great opportunity to spend a day at the lake with the kids while they are out of school for summer vacation. Here are some helpful tips and techniques that will help you land the big one regardless if you are a novice or an experienced angler… The water conditions at Lake Fork are very good right now. The lake is currently 3 ½ feet low. The water temperatures are ranging from 82-88 degrees. Most of the lake is fairly clear with some stained areas around wind blow banks and in the backs of a few creeks. I attribute the improved water clarity to the new vegetation in the creeks filtering the water better than in the past couple of years. The shallow water bite has remained reliable due to the unseasonably cool weather that we have been having this year. June fished more like May normally does and I expect July to fish more like June which is excellent! The fish are feeding early and late up shallow in 2-6 feet on top water baits. The frog has been best for me around the shallow grass. Hollow frogs like the spro types are good. You will also find some areas back in the creeks where the bass are schooling on bait. My best bait for them has been a walking bait like a zara spook. Any shad pattern will do. I am also catching a lot of fish with my clients in mid depths from 8-14 feet early on Texas rigged Berkley 10” Powerworms with a 3/8 Elite Tungsten weight and a 5/0 hook. The best areas to check out for these fish are along creek channel edges, shallow humps, points, and old pond dams. A Continued on page 5 July 2014 www.lakeforkareanews.com LAKE FORK RV REPAIR Page 5 903-765-3209 4340 N. FM 17 Alba, TX 75410 800-657-3156 Trophy Bass Report Continued from page 4 Talon jig in the 5/8 oz size is also choice for catching these fish. It’s a perfect size and weight to imitate a crawfish or bream, which the bass are feeding heavily on this time of year. Best colors have been green pumpkin, willies, and California. You can check them out at www.talonlures.com The deep bite is really kicking off this month. We saw some deep action in June but those big groups were hard to find. It didn’t ever really get hot enough to get those large congregations of fish piled up out in deep water. Once we see the thermocline set in, and the heat bears down for the summer we will start to see those big schools of fish congregated in one area. The best way to read all these water situations and understand how fish relate to conditions out deep is to have great electronics. I rely on my Lowrance Gen 2 graphs to tell me exactly where and what the fish are doing out deep. If you are weak in this area of your fishing (most anglers are), now is the time of year to spend lots of time out on the lake learning. The bass are starting to stack up on points, humps, and roadbeds right now in 18-24 ft consistently. But you can expect to see numbers of bass move even deeper as the month progresses. I have already started to see some fish showing up in 30+ water. Look for the big schools of bait in these areas as most all the fish are relating to large schools of shad. Once you’ve located a school of bass out in the depths of Lake Fork you can catch them on a variety of lures. If the bass are on or close to the bottom, I will use a Carolina rig with an Elite Tungsten 1 oz weight and a 4 ft leader with a 3/0 Trokar wide gap hook. The best baits for me have been the Berkley Havoc Jerk, Havoc Backslide, or any centipede/ring fry type bait. Best colors have been watermelon red, green pumpkin, and chartreuse pepper. I always like to throw a Talon football head jig on these deep bass. I opt for the ¾-1 oz size in these depths. The jig will often times catch the biggest fish in the school as its size and profile appeals to the larger fish. You will also find a lot of bass out deep that are very suspended this month. They can be challenging to catch for sure! I will cycle through a number of baits to determine which one they want best. The deep diving crank bait is a good one to start with. Any shad pattern will work right now. You can also catch them on the Alabama rig or a single weighted swim bait like the Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad. If the bass are suspended in depth ranges that are hard to reach with these baits you’ll want to give the Talon “Big Dandy” flutter spoon a try. This thing will flat out catch em and can be fished anywhere in the water column. If you want to catch a giant, this is a strong favorite this month. I rig mine on the “new” Abu Garcia Veracity rod 7’3” medium heavy action with 17 lb Trilene Big Game. Best colors are Lake Fork Maniac and bar fish. Well that about sums it up for what’s going on at Lake Fork this month. I wish everyone traveling out for summer vacations and family time a safe and memorable trip. Please be safe on the water! There are more drownings during the summer months than anytime of the year. Be sure to operate your boat safely, wear a life vest, and a kill switch. It’s also important to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water and Gatorade to stay hydrated. Heat exhaustion is very prevalent in the summer months and will sneak up on you fast! If you are headed to Lake Fork in pursuit of a trophy bass and are looking to book a guide, I would enjoy the opportunity to take you or your group fishing and show you a great time on Lake Fork. I still have a few dates available for summer and am taking fall reservations as well. Be sure to schedule your 2014 date soon, as I fill up very fast! The crappie fishing has slowed down after a good start this Spring. With the hot weather the crappie have moved out to the brush piles and deeper water. You can still catch a mess if you go early. The best bait now is minnows, but you can still catch them on jigs. There is a report on TFF of a 17 inch crappie being caught while bass fishing recently on Lake Fork. That is usually the other way around, with bass being caught while crappie fishing. While the fishing is slow- ing down, things around the WCCC are busier than ever. Our June meeting was on the 14th at Pope’s Landing Marina. We had 28 in attendance and signed up 3 new members. We held a club mixer for an hour before the meeting to visit and have some light snacks. This is something we will do more often as it is hard to get around to saying hi to everyone at a regular meeting. Slade Dougharty was the guest speaker at this meeting. Slade is a Lake Fork Electronic Training Guide. He will go out with you and show you how to set up and use the OPEN 7-5 Mon. - Fri. 115 W. Front St. Mineola, Tx. The next thing coming up at the WCCC is our “Fishing Swap Meet” on July 5, 2014. This is an annual event and will be held at Pope’s Landing Marina & RV Resort this year. Pope’s is off Hwy 17 between Alba and Hwy 515. Things kick off at 8:00 AM. This event is free to all that want to come Buy, Sell, or Trade fishing and boating items only. The next WCCC meeting will be on July 12, 2014 at Pope’s Landing. Meeting starts at 4:00 PM. The guest speaker is scheduled to be Paul O’ Bier. Paul is a professional crappie guide and tournament fisherman. It should be an interesting meeting. I’ve bow hunted them… a LOT. I’ve shot porkers with pistols, center fire rifles, muzzleloaders, crossbows, big bore air rifles. I’ve knifed em and once when I was much younger, even killed one with a spear. I’ve hunted them with dogs, stalked, walked, still hunted, stand hunted, went on hog drives, just about every method of killing wild hogs with the exception of shooting them from the air, I’ve done. This past week, I was introduced to hog hunting the easy way! This tale has it’s begin- nings at an outdoor show in Waco this past spring. For the past four years, I have been using a very rugged electric hunting buggy made by Ken Blackstock, owner of Plano Golf Carts in Plano Texas. Ken’s buggy comes with a regenerative braking system. We use the carts in the mountains of northern Colorado each fall for our archery elk/bear hunts. When going down the mountain, just let off the accelerator and the buggy will gently come to an almost complete stop, even on very steep inclines. The system is a real break saver and during those periods when the mountain trails are wet and slippery, A.J.’S FISH HOUSE makes negotiating the steep slopes much safer. At the show in Waco, I was showing Blackstock the Nite Site (NS) which is an awesome tool for night hunting hogs or predators. With an affordable price tag coupled with a very clear image in complete darkness, the Nite Site puts night vision within the means of the average guy. After testing the NS, Ken made a comment to me that I will never forget, nor will I forget my ‘off the cuff’ reply. “Luke, I’m going to figure out a way to mount a water proof screen in the front of my buggy Emory Self Storage 410 E. I remember my reply. “But WHY, why would you want to mount the Nite Site on top of the electric buggy and drive it in complete darkness simply by looking at the screen?” Be- fore I got the words out of my mouth, I had already thought of the answer but Ken was quick to set me on the right path. “Luke, just think about it like this, with this unit mounted on a totally quiet electric vehicle, you will be able to drive right up on hogs. Imagine pulling the buggy up to the edge of a big hay meadow of crop field and scanning for feeding hogs. Once you find them, simply get downwind and drive within easy shooting range. Fast forward to a recent night ‘test drive’ on one of Ken’s electric buggies with the NS rig perfected and mounted. We carried a rifle along set up with a Nite Site 200 just in case our little test run produced some porker action. We unloaded the buggy about 30 minutes before dark- ness. Ken gave me a quick tutorial of how easy it is to set in the front seat and reach overhead to turn the direction of the NS. When driving down a trail or back road, simply leave the unit pointed straight ahead. The road ahead is lit up as though it is daylight. Every stick, rock or obstruction can be seen easily. I was already liking Ken’s idea of coupling the NS with the stealth of his electric buggy. The night was moonless and as dark as pitch. YES, I really could drive the off road buggy in total darkness! I drove to the edge of a tree line that bordered a 200 acre field of soybeans. A slow twist of the handle overhead caused the roof mounted NS to scan the field. No hogs from this vantage point but we could easily make out the forms of several cows 150 yards across a bordering fence line. As is sometimes the case when hog hunting, the porkers simply did not cooperate this night. But I did log in several miles of off road driving in complete darkness, using the screen mounted on the electric buggy to find my way around. I was impressed and when we loaded the buggy back on the trailer, we were all making plans for round two with the porkers. In a few weeks, when those beans begin to ripen, hogs will pack into that field in numbers. It will be hot and probably sultry but we will be hunting in complete comfort from the padded seat of our hunting buggy. Once we have our pork on the ground, we’ll load in onto the back of the buggy and transport it to the truck. The hunt will be easy and I’m learning to appreciate easy from time to time! The new Texas Parks and Wildlife Department regulation is designed to help combat the further spread of zebra mussels and other invasive species. It applies to all types and sizes of boats whether powered or not: personal watercraft, sailboats, kayaks/canoes, or any other vessel used on public waters. The regulation requires the draining of livewells, bilges, motors, and any other receptacles or water-intake systems coming into contact with public waters. Live fish, including personally caught live bait, cannot be transported from the water body where the fish were caught in or aboard a vessel in water from the water body where the fish were caught. Personally caught live bait can be used in the water body where it was caught. Anglers are allowed to transport and use commercially purchased live bait if they have a receipt that identifies the source of the bait. Any live bait purchased from a location on or adjacent to a public water body that is transported in water from that water body can only be used as bait on that same water body. Anglers participating in a fishing tournament confined to one water body may transport live fish in water from that single water body to an identified off-site weigh-in location, but all water must be drained and properly disposed of before leaving that location. Anglers are required to possess documentation provided by tournament organizers that identify them as participants in the tournament. Mark Balette, owner and operator of B & C Outfitters near Trinity in East Texas says he has hunters from all over the country that schedule annual summertime hunts for his herd of Axis deer. “Axis deer have become a very popular exotic animal the past few years.” Says Balette. “While they can breed throughout the year, the primary rut is during the summer months when the majority of the bucks have hardened antlers. Axis meat is considered by many, including myself, to be the tastiest of all venison. Trophy hunters seeking big antlers target the bucks but there is also a great many hunters that hunt the females for meat.” Continued on page 15 Thank you to all our patrons...see you in the fall! Owners: John & JoAnne Heimgartner July 2014 www.lakeforkareanews.com Page 15 Deer season Continued from page 14 I’ve had the opportunity to be around Axis deer on many occasions but have only hunted them twice. Once was a decade ago down near Campwood where herds of free ranging Axis come close to matching the number of our native whitetail. While setting over Bull Creek around 11 in the morning, as a guest of Larry Large on at his hunting lease, I shot a big buck that came to the waters edge for a mid day drink. The venison was excellent and the beautiful brown with white spots tanned hide is still a prized possession. This past week, I opened “deer season” again with an Axis hunt down in the Hill Country with a good friend that builds custom big bore air rifles and one of his long time hunting buddies that owns some property outside the city limits of a Hill Country town. Thanks to a year around feeding program, the land is home to a large number of Axis, including some real ‘wall hangers”. A couple of weeks ago, my friend took his big bore air rifles down and harvested a couple of monster 30 plus inchers, the largest of which tipped the scales at a whopping 265 pounds. Had the daytime temperature not been pushing ninety degrees and the Hill Country landscape lush and green, I’d have thought I was in route to a fall hunt for rutting whitetails. Our headquarters for the night was a ‘sure nuff’ Texas deer camp, albeit only a hundred or yards or so from our friends home. The cabin we stayed in the evening of this ‘opener’ was rustic and steeped in deer hunting history. For several decades the camp had served as headquarters for my friends on many, many hunts for Axis deer. While setting around the campfire that evening which was unseasonably cool, many fond memories of past hunts to the Hill Country were rekindled. I thought about my first time to hunt the Hill Country. I was in my twenties when a couple of buddies and I went down to Llano on a 3 day ‘day’ hunt. On this hunt, I took my first Hill Country Whitetail, a goat horned spike that I was extremely proud of. What I remember most about this hunt was the sheer numbers of deer I saw and my first look at an Axis deer. The spotted doe that came to the corn feeder I was hunting back in the mid seventies really whetted my curiosity and… hunting blood. When I described the deer I had sighted to the fellow running the hunts, he replied, “Well, Luke, why didn’t you shoot it. That was an Axis deer and you can hunt them year around down here. They are even better eating than whitetail!” The old saying that it doesn’t take long to spend the night at deer camp proved true on last week’s deer hunt. It seemed I’d no longer turned in when the alarm clock jingled and in no time, we had coffee brewing in the old enamel coffee pot. There’s something special about coffee at hunting camp. My friends had briefed me the night before that I needed to be ready for a long walk to the deer Continued on page 16 Lake Fork Resort 5004 N. After a total of about 85 steps from the door of the cabin, I discovered why! An elaborate two story hunting blind was nestled in some trees less than one hundred yards from the cabin. “Don’t let the close proximity of the deer stand and feeder to the cabin fool, you Luke”, I heard from my hosts also setting in the roomy blind. “This field will turn into deer at first light. I 903-850-7131 DROP-OFF and PICK-UP at LAKE FORK MARINA and DIAMOND SPORTS MARINE Authorized Service Ardent Reels & Accessories (made in the USA) Joe Armold Yantis, Texas www.ets-systems.com/reelrepair www.lakeforkareanews.com had my infra red Nite Site Spotter with me and when I began scanning the field and adjacent woodline, every deer in the Hill Country it seemed, was filtering into the field. Just before good shooting light, I watched eight or ten whitetail come to the feeder nearest our stand. It will be Oc- tober before these deer can be hunted but it was fun seeing the already impressive antler growth on the bucks. Through the Spotter, I watched spotted deer (Axis) hitting a feeder a couple hundred yards distant. Adjacent the woodline, 140 yards away, I spotted one very impressive Axis buck and a couple of younger Axis deer are plentiful across much of the Texas Hill Country and game ranches across the state. This nice buck is in the early stages of the rut. Photo by Luke Clayton animals. This was a big bore air rifle hunt. I was shooting a .45 caliber made by my friend and had previously decided to limit my shots to 75 yards. In the hands of an expert air rifle shooter that knew the exact trajectory of the bullet, the 140 yard shot was doable but I didn’t want to press my luck on this hunt. If it didn’t happen on this short one day outing, chances were good I’d be successful on my next summer outing. We watched deer feeding at three different feeders and every feeder except the one we were hunting had attracted shootable Axis bucks. We were covered up with whitetails. As the old adage goes, “that’s hunting”! As we drove through a nearby subdivision on our way home, we spotted several Axis bucks and numbers of does bedded in the yards of homes. Yes, the July 2014 Texas Hill Country, at least in certain areas, has almost as many free ranging Axis deer as whitetail. As a general rule, exotics of any species are not welcome because they compete with native fish/wildlife. But to my way of thinking, these plentiful Axis deer give hunters another animal to hunt during a period when native game animals are off season. They can especially be appreciated when one sets down to a big platter of golden brown chicken fried Axis steaks, cream gravy and mashed potatoes! The LFSA wants to thank our partners in this year’s event, the Lake Fork Area Chamber of Commerce. Randy Bunch, President of the Chamber, and his fellow members did a great job of getting the word out about the tournament. Tracy Hatton, Chamber Vice President and tournament host, gathered over $4,000 in raffle prizes. This year’s raffle featured a Henry Golden Boy Rifle value at over $500. We want to thank Lake Fork Firearms for their generous donation. The winner of this great gun was Fred Spears of Denton, TX. Cooper Vernon with the first fish of the tournament. Every June the catfish really start to feed and move out to deeper water. I’ve been fishing in water 30 to 35 ft. and have really been bringing in some good quality channel cats. Most of them have been between one to five pounds. These are your better eating size anyway. All of my customers want fish to take home so I’m not trying to catch those big ones. I concentrate on numbers not big ones. I try and let anything over five pounds go back to be caught again another day. The Lake Fork Catfish Classic sponsored by the Lake Fork Sportsman’s Association and the Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce had a great turnout. There were a lot of great raffle prizes given away including a ½ day catfish trip for two donated by Stan Kuhn’s Catfish Guide Service. I’m keeping my article short this month as I’m letting my pictures show you what we www.lakeforkareanews.com Page 19 Stan Kuhn’s Catfish Report have been catching. The Ernest’s Poletown Catfish Bait has caught all of our fish. You can now buy this bait at Minnow Bucket, Star Mart, Oak Ridge, Fisherman’s One Stop, and the Pay-N-Save in Alba. July will be hot so take plenty of cool drinks and sunscreen to protect your skin. The fishing should stay hot, as the catfish are schooled up and pretty easy to catch.
