officials said the b o d y of G e o r g e
Keller, 6 1 , w a s found in his eonv e r t e d - g a r a g e h o m e in a pool of
blood.
S h e r i f f s officials said Keller suffered one or m o r e w o u n d s , but
would not r e l e a s e a n y further details.
Keller's sister, Lucy Kent, and
brother-in-law, who b e c a m e s u s p i cious w h e n Keller failed to s h o w u p
for work at an Osceola gas s t a t i o n
M o n d a y night, found him d e a d at
about 1 a.m. T u e s d a y , officials said.
A u t h o r i t i e s said Keller w a s a
chicken f a r m e r and w a s k n o w n as
"Chicken G e o r g e . " H e lived a l o n e
and did not have a t e l e p h o n e ,
officials said.
R e l a t i v e s found Keller's b o d y
lying on t h e floor j u s t i n s i d e the
d o o r of his h o m e .
Bob W e t z l e r , Keller's e m p l o y e r of
m o r e t h a n a year, had notified Ms.
Kent of Keller' s failure to r e p o r t to
work. W e t z l e r w e n t to Keller's
g a r a g e a p a r t m e n t i m m e d i a t e l y and
found h im lying in a "pool of b l o o d , "
he said.
" H e had o n e h a n d u p in t h e air
like he w a s l u n g i n g or s o m e t h i n g , "
W e t z l e r said.
A u t h o r i t i e s said Keller had converte d his g a r a g e into a t e m p o r a r y
h o m e w h i l e he w a s h a v i n g a h o u s e
t h a t w a s d e s t r o y e d by fire t w o y e a r s
ago rebuilt . T h e fire w a s t a g g e d an
a r s o n , b u t officials n e v e r m a d e any
a r r e s t s in the case.

Keller died or if t h e y h a v e a n y
s u s p e c t s or w e a p o n s in the d e a t h .

who claimed that a confession he
m a d e to the police s h o r t l y after his
arrest w as not v o l u n t a r y b e c a u s e he
had taken c o c a i n e a s h o r t t i m e
before.
The ruling by the c o u r t T u e s d a y
said t h e r e w a s no b a s i s to H e n r y
Fletcher Claytor Jr.'s claim that his
j u d g m e n t w a s i m p a i r e d by t h e
cocaine and t h a t t h e c o n f e s s i on
therefore s h o u l d not h a v e b e e n u s e d
in court.
Claytor had a p p e a l e d his conviction in Linn C o u n t y D i s t r i c t C o u r t
for s e c o n d - d e g r e e r o b b e r y in connection with an i n c i d e n t Dec. 20,
1979, at the B u r g e r King, 3535 First
A v e n u e SE., in w h i c h m o r e t h a n
$100 w as t a k e n .
T h e ruling said t e s t i m o n y s h o w e d
Claytor m a y h a v e b e e n d e p r e s s e d ,
but did not a p p e a r to b e i n t o x i c a t e d ,
that h e wa s fully a w a r e of w h a t w a s
going on and t h a t he could recall his
precise t h o u g h t s d u r i n g the r o b b e r y .
• Claytor also had a r g u e d he s h o u l d
not h a v e b e e n c o n v i c t e d of r o b b e r y
b e c a u s e t h e r e w a s no e v i d e n c e t h a t
he had t h r e a t e n e d a n y o n e or c a u s e d
a n y o n e to fear s e r i o u s injury. W i t h out proof of at least o n e of t h o s e
e l e m e n t s t h e r e would h a v e b e e n no
r o b b e r y as defined by Iowa law.
C l a y t o r said t h e r e w a s no e v i d e n c e
t h a t a w e a p o n w a s u s e d d u r i n g the
robbery.
In t u r n i n g d o w n that, a r g u m e n t ,
the a p p e a l s c o u r t said a r e s t a u r a n t
e m p l o y e e testified t h a t Clayto r had
his right h a n d in hi s coat p o c k e t
with a cylindrical object p o i n t e d at
her and a s k e d her, " W h a t would you
do if I had a gun on y o u ? " before
demanding money.

handgun.

Unseasonably warm temperatures prevailed over the Central U.S. Highs reached the
upper 80s and low 90s from the Gulf Coast
region to Kansas and western Iowa. The
mercury climbed to 97 degrees at Hill City,
Kansas, and to 90 at Des Moines.
Much cooler temperatures dominated the
northern part of the country. Highs only
reached into the 50s from Montana through
northern Minnesota to the North Atlantic
Coast states.
