My wife, Toby, recognized from her own musical education that teaching young, talented musicians is a delicate and involved process, similar to properly storing the perfect wine. Just as different wines develop at their own individual pace, so do aspiring young musicians. No matter the time frame, when nurtured properly, like good wine, our students only get better with age. By joining us tonight, you are making a significant investment in the future of classical music. Your generosity will provide us with the necessary resources to support the world's most talented young artists. Tonight's event would not have been possible without our dedicated Chairmen: Stephanie and Gavin Albert, Leslie and James Attwood, Ann and Michael Bunyaner, Vanessa and Henry Cornell, Ellen and Rodger DeRose, Bari and Neil Goldmacher, Katherine and Peter Kend, Penny and Jay Lieberman, Eilene and Ronald J. Oehl, Pamela and Edward S. Pantzer, Joanna S. and Daniel Rose, Roger Schagrin, Hannele and Michael Troise, Diane and Thomas Tuft, and Eileen and Ronald Weiser. Finally, I must thank our Auctioneer and Event Chair, Michael Troise. Since we first embarked on creating a charity wine auction for PMP, Michael has become an invaluable advisor and friend. Krug Rosé is the only prestige cuvée rosé to be blended from a rich palette of wines from three different grape varieties, and from such a wide range of years. These are blended with a wonderfully expressive skin-fermented Pinot Noir wine to deliver its unparalleled and characteristic color and spice. A resting time of at least five years in Krug’s cellars gives Krug Rosé its subtle bubbles and long-lasting elegance. Krug Rosé was created in a bid to move away from excesses in aroma. The result is a Champagne Rosé defined by its distinction and finesse. Krug Rosé is decidedly the most non-conformist of Krug Champagnes. It is an unexpected delight, surprising at every sip with its texture, color and taste. “Krug Rosé is both unexpected and daring. It shows a broad and extensive aromatic palette, unusual for a Rosé Champagne. As you taste Krug Rosé, you will discover harmonies of puff pastry and red-berry tart, which develop towards honey and citrus fruits. Its floral accents and notes of dried or stewed fruit will enthrall your palate. Its extreme delicacy is enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles.” Eric Lebel, Chef de Caves, Krug Includes: • One Jéroboam of Krug Brut Rosé – direct from the House of Krug Donated courtesy of Vincent Pagès, Head of Krug Champagne, USA Opening Bid: $1,000 8 lot lot 2 A PETER MICHAEL EXTRAVAGANZA In 1982, after six years of searching for land to serve as both vineyard and family retreat, Sir Peter Michael and Lady Michael purchased 630 acres of volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley. Following Sir Peter’s 100 by 100 vision – 100% family ownership for at least 100 years – and drawing inspiration from the great wineries of Burgundy and Bordeaux, the family hired like-minded viticulturists and winemakers to help them create terroir driven wines that would stand the test of time. Today, with the support of son, Paul, and his wife Emily, the Peter Michael winery still adheres to its original founding principles of “mountain vineyards, classical winemaking, and limited production.” Includes: • One Double Magnum of 2005 Peter Michael Les Pavots Estate Red • One Double Magnum of 2006 Peter Michael Les Pavots Estate Red • One Double Magnum of 2007 Peter Michael Les Pavots Estate Red • One Double Magnum of 2008 Peter Michael Les Pavots Estate Red Donated courtesy of Sir Peter Michael and Peter Michael Winery Opening Bid: $3,800 9 lot lot 3 PUT SOME REAL LEAD IN YOUR CELLAR PENCIL If you’re suffering from Elixir Deficiency, here’s your chance to really put some lead in your cellar pencil. From this challenging vintage in Northern California, Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer hit a home run with this dark plum-colored 1998. It offers up notes of raspberry jam, Asian plum sauce, blackberries and smoked game in an incredibly complex, nuanced style.” “The 1999 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard reveals a mineral, soy, Asian plum sauce characteristic, along with notes of black raspberries, scorched earth, steak tartare, and assorted black fruits. Subtle notions of toasty vanillin from new oak aging also emerge. This wine has full body as well as remarkable concentration, length, and presence.” “The magnificent 2000 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard continues to develop even more complexity. Truly great stuff, this medium to full-bodied 2000 exhibits scents of rose petals intertwined with charcuterie, spring flowers, blue and black fruits, and hints of raspberries, cola, and mint oil. This profound, extremely nuanced, powerful, exuberant Pinot Noir boasts terrific definition and personality.” “The plum/ruby-colored, earthy, meaty, smoky 2001 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard possesses Morey-St.-Denis-like characteristics of plums, mushrooms, forest floor, and flowers.” “The virtually perfect 2002 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard is not to be out-performed. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by extraordinary aromas of plum liqueur, raspberries, cherries, and forest floor. Drinking this full-bodied, pure, multilayered 2002 is akin to a religious experience. In fact, if you’re not religious, you soon will be.” All quotes from Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One bottle of 1997 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard • One bottle of 1998 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard • One bottle of 1999 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard • One bottle of 2000 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard • One bottle of 2001 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard • One bottle of 2002 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard Donated courtesy of Katherine and Peter Kend Opening Bid: $1,900 11 lot lot 5 AN EXTRAORDINARY IMPERIAL OF 2011 CHATEAU MARGAUX Under the brilliant direction of the incomparable and undisputed grande dame of Bordeaux, Corinne Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux has produced a succession of stunningly great vintages. The 2011 Château Margaux is certainly one of the very best of them. “The 2011 Château Margaux is a candidate for wine of the vintage. With the harvest occurring between September 5th and 20th, it was the smallest crop in over twenty years as yields were cut significantly by the drought. The berries were tiny. Moreover, analytically, the 2011 has a higher level of concentration as well as tannins than the 2009. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, only 38% of the harvest made it into the grand vin. The wine boasts a dark ruby/plum color as well as a fragrant perfume of spring flowers, sweet, supple, well-integrated tannins, medium body, and the elegance and nobility expected from a great firstgrowth.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Ladies and gentlemen, please know that Château Margaux produces very, very few Imperials. This one was personally given to Maestro Perlman and The Perlman Music Program by Madame Mentzelopoulos especially for the 2016 auction. Includes: • One Imperial of 2011 Château Margaux Donated courtesy of Mme. Corinne Menztelopoulos and Château Margaux Opening Bid: $7,000 12 lot lot 6 DINNERS FOR TWO AT LINCOLN CENTER Lincoln Ristorante is the home of one of the world’s great chefs, Jonathan Benno. You may remember Chef Benno from his days as Executive Chef of Per Se. Now, Chef Benno has re-invented himself in Lincoln, coming back to his Italian roots. Its location beside Lincoln Center’s reflecting pool and Henry Moore sculpture is perhaps the most exquisite in the world. Gabriel’s, owned by renowned restaurateur, Gabriel Aiello, has been a standard bearer for delicious Italian cuisine since it first opened its doors in 1991. It is a hot spot for some of the most powerful, influential people, ranging from the celebrities we all know and love to important politicians, including Presidents Bush and Clinton. Telepan, situated on a leafy block, just steps from Central Park, welcomes guests to enjoy bold American dishes in a smart yet relaxed setting. Chef Bill Telepan opened his fine dining restaurant in 2005, and it has since earned glowing reviews and a Michelin Star. “The 2007 Poggio Il Castellare Brunello di Montalcino presents an intriguing melange of camphor, smoke, licorice, tar and black cherries, all supported by firm yet tannins. Smoke, tar and licorice infuse the huge finish.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • Four course dinner for two at Lincoln Ristorante with wine pairings • Dinner for two at Gabriel’s • Dinner for two at Telepan • One Magnum of 2007 Poggio Il Castellare Brunello di Montalcino • One Double Magnum of 1997 Falletto di Bruno Giacosa 'Falletto’ Barolo • One Magnum of 2005 Dom Pérignon - Dinner at Lincoln donated courtesy of Executive Chef and Proprietor Jonathan Benno - Dinner at Gabriel’s donated courtesy of Gabriel Aiello - Dinner at Telepan donated courtesy of Bill Telepan - Magnum of 2007 Brunello di Montalcino donated courtesy of Cornelia and Ralph Heins - Double Magnum of 1997 Barolo donated courtesy of Bari and Neil Goldmacher - Magnum of 2005 Dom Pérignon donated courtesy of Jane and Geoffrey Troy and the New York Wine Warehouse Note: Dinner gift certificates are valid for one year after the date of issuance. Opening Bid: $1,500 13 lot lot 7 A FULL CASE OF 1989 CHATEAU MARGAUX “The 1989 Château Margaux has a dark plum/garnet color and a big, sweet nose of new saddle leather, toasty oak, and weedy black cherry and cassis fruit. The wine is medium-bodied, with relatively elevated tannins, outstanding concentration and purity, but a somewhat clipped as well as compressed finish. This certainly outstanding wine has put on a bit of weight in its evolution in the bottle.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One 12 bottle case of 1989 Château Margaux Donated courtesy of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Loeffler 14 Opening Bid: $4,200 lot lot 8 A FULL CASE OF THE GREATEST CHATEAU PONTET CANET EVER MADE “I remember tasting the immortal 1945 Pontet Canet thinking there couldn’t possibly be another vintage of this wine to surpass it. I was wrong. The 2009 Château Pontet Canet is the richest, most fragrant, most gloriously layered wine I have ever had the privilege to taste from this impeccably run property - period.” Michael Troise “An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, crème de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • A full 12 bottle case of 2009 Château Pontet Canet – direct from the château in its original wood case Donated courtesy of The Perlman Music Program Opening Bid: $3,800 15 lot lot 9 2009 CABERNET SAUVIGNON FROM HISTORIC HEITZ CELLARS The intensely flavorful wines from Rutherford's Trailside Vineyard have been part of the Heitz range since 1989. The vineyard is flanked by the Silverado Trail on one side and Conn Creek on the other and is certified organic. Aged in oak for three and half years, the winery describes the 2009 vintage thusly: "Opulent hues of ruby and garnet draw you headlong into the glass; rich aromas of blackberry and a hint of nutmeg invite you to stay. With just the right amount of French oak there is a subtle sweetness that lifts and enhances the dark fruit characters on the palate. Balanced against the more savory, earthy notes of coffee and cedar, this wine has all the hallmarks of a classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon." Includes: • Six bottles of 2009 Heitz Cellars Trailside Cabernet Sauvignon Donated courtesy of Kathleen Heitz Myers and Heitz Cellars Opening Bid: $500 16 lot lot 10 DINNER FOR TEN AT RED BAR BRASSERIE IN SOUTHAMPTON Hobnob with the Hamptons glitterati this summer at the Red Bar Brasserie. We are honored to have received this direct from owner/proprietor, Erwan Faiveley. “The 2011 Domaine Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard Montrachet is a beautifully made wine showing citrus notes of lemon and lime, with acacia flower undertones. Lush, ripe and perfectly balanced, this is a wine of elegance and sophistication.” Michael Troise Includes: • One Jéroboam of 2011 Domaine Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard Montrachet Donated courtesy of Erwan Faiveley and Domaine Faiveley Opening Bid: $800 18 lot lot 12 MUSIC IN A GLASS Arietta is wine specialist and auctioneer, Fritz Hatton and his wife Caren’s name for wines born of a passion for music. The name Arietta, meaning short aria or art song, expresses their belief that all great wines must sing. Both wine and song should "take flight," in the course of which the qualities of balance, vibrancy, depth, overtones, and complexity resonate and give us a sense of exaltation. One of America’s most celebrated winemakers, Andy Erickson, crafts the Arietta wines from carefully chosen blocks in the cooler climates of Napa Valley. The Arietta wine portfolio currently consists of four red wines—H Block Hudson, Variation One, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Quartet—and one white wine, On The White Keys. The Hattons founded Arietta in 1996 in partnership with winemaker John Kongsgaard and his wife, Maggy. The partnership was born of a shared passion for fine wine and classical music. The vinous inspiration for Arietta was an extraordinary 2.3 acre block of Cabernet Franc on the Hudson Ranch in Napa/Carneros. The fruit from this block of Cabernet Franc serves as the core of the Arietta Red Wine H Block Hudson Vineyards. The Arietta project grew with the selection of additional superb blocks of Merlot and Syrah on the Hudson Ranch, which made possible the addition of two wines to the Arietta portfolio: Arietta Red Wine Variation One, an innovative blend of Merlot and Syrah, and Arietta Merlot Hudson Vineyards, produced only in selected vintages. Arietta's label features the manuscript of Beethoven's Arietta movement from his last Piano Sonata, Opus 111, written long after the composer had lost his hearing. Opus 111 is one of the most transporting and revolutionary pieces of music ever composed. Serene yet complex, rich yet ethereal, Beethoven’s Arietta provides an inspirational model for great winemaking. The wine exhibits sumptuous aromatics of subtle menthol intermixed with caramel, black raspberries, mulberries, kirsch, and cassis. With a stupendous opulence and a fleshy mouth feel, but no heaviness or fatigue, this dense wine is staggeringly concentrated, very full-bodied, powerful, and silky smooth. Irresistible already, it is almost frightening to think how compelling this beauty should be in a few years.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “The 2009 Cheval Blanc has an amazing nose of beautifully ripe and creamy red and black fruits with a hint of dark chocolate. Black currants and chocolate-covered blackberries in the mouth mingle with a hint of sweet, toasty oak and build to a seemingly endless and almost indelible finish. With seamless balance and round, sweet tannins this is just a gorgeous masterpiece. Owner Pierre Lurton called it “Extraordinary, a wine that will last even longer than the 2000.” When I asked him which he thought was better…he merely smiled. Although I tried, words simply can’t describe how good this wine is.” Michael Troise We urge you to bid aggressively for this rare bottle. We may never see another again. Includes: • One Imperial of 2009 Château Cheval Blanc – direct from the château in its original wood case Donated courtesy of Diane and Tom Tuft Opening Bid: $11,000 20 lot lot 14 WHEN THREE IS DEFINITELY NOT A CROWD Whether you call them Double Magnums or Jéroboams (if you’re in Burgundy), who doesn’t love Three Liter bottles of wine. Nothing is more festive for big parties…or a very decadent cozy little dinner for two. Here we have, well, three of them. “The 2008 Dominus (4,200 cases from a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) reveals an explosive nose of red and black fruits intermixed with notes of truffles, earth, soil, forest floor, and licorice. This lush, flamboyant, opulent effort is an anomaly for this Napa vintage. It shows outstanding density, richness, a savory flavor profile, and an enduring texture.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “Vanilla, toast, blackcurrants, graphite, earth and foresty notes are all present in the 2008 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. It has great fruit, a medium to full-bodied mouth feel, and quite a perfumed personality.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “The small production (4,150 cases) of 2011 La Mission Haut Brion displays the nobility and complexity of this great terroir. Burning embers, scorched earth, blueberry, black currant, licorice and spice aromas jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored wine. With full body (atypical for a 2011), but no hard edges, this opulent, multidimensional, fleshy, rich, stunningly long, well-balanced La Mission is another great achievement in what has been nearly a century of producing remarkable wines from this hallowed vineyard.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Double Magnum of 2008 Dominus • One Double Magnum of 2006 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select • One Double Magnum of 2011 Château La Mission Haut Brion - 2008 Dominus donated courtesy of Roger B. We quote Robert Parker from The Wine Advocate: “This 1995 Romanée Conti is mind-boggling and has gathered even more body, power, and density than it displayed from barrel. It is complex with distinctive flavors of morel and porcini mushrooms intermingled with cassis and black cherries. Bravo!” “The 1982 Pétrus is a thrilling, outstanding wine... The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple, and the wine is young and backward. Nevertheless, an herbaceous, sweet, curranty, pain grillée-like nose has begun to emerge. The wine is full-bodied, concentrated, moderately tannic, and medium to full-bodied with a long, super-rich, concentrated finish.” Includes: • One bottle of 1995 Romanée Conti Note: Very slightly bin soiled label, "Cont" (of Romanée-Conti)" scuffed off. Outstanding color and condition. Personally inspected and authenticated by Michael Troise. • One bottle of 1982 Pétrus Note: Outstanding color and condition. As soon as the winning bidder is announced for this bottle I fully intend to ask for an invitation to taste it on the occasion of its opening. And yes, groveling will be involved.” Michael Troise “The 1990 Hermitage Le Pavillon is indeed one of the most extraordinary young wines I have ever tasted. Black-colored, with an extraordinary perfume of licorice, sweet blackcurrants, smoke, and minerals, it coats the palate with layer upon layer of decadently rich, super-concentrated, nearly viscous Syrah flavors. There is amazing glycerin, a chewy, unctuous texture, and phenomenal length. The tannins, which are considerable when analyzed, are virtually obscured by the massive quantities of fruit. I hope I live to see the day when Chapoutier's 1990 Hermitage-Le Pavillon, Chave's 1990 Hermitage, and Jaboulet's 1990 Hermitage-La Chapelle are fully mature! What a trio of wines these three producers have produced from this historic appellation! My best guess for the aging potential of the Hermitage-Le Pavillon is that it is more forward than both the Chave and Jaboulet Hermitages, but should you have the good fortune to find a bottle or two, do not open it for at least 7-10 years. It should last for 30-40 years.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Jéroboam of 1990 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon Donated courtesy of Erica Collins and Dr. William Steffee† † The Perlman Music Program salutes the memory of Dr. William Steffee (1936—2015). His passions for art and wine were infectious, and his warm and generous spirit was undeniable. The PMP family will remember him fondly. Opening Bid: $2,800 24 lot lot 18 AN IMPERIAL OF THE PERFECT 2009 CHATEAU CLINET “The 2009 Clinet appears to be the greatest wine ever made at the estate, surpassing even the late Jean-Michel Arcaute’s monumental 1989. A blend of 85% Merlot and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc (12%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%), this big Pomerol boasts an opaque, moonless night inky/blue/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blueberry pie, incense, truffles, black raspberries, licorice and wood smoke. Viscous and multi-dimensional with silky, sweet tannin, massive fruit concentration and full-bodied power, there are nearly 4,000 cases of this thick, juicy, perfect Clinet.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Imperial of 2009 Château Clinet – direct from the château in its original wood case Arranged courtesy of Michael Troise Opening Bid: $4,200 25 lot lot 19 A RARE CASE OF 1993 GRIOTTE CHAMBERTIN FROM DOMAINE PONSOT Perhaps one of the greatest wines ever to be made at Domaine Ponsot, only 10 cases or so of the 1993 Griotte Chambertin were ever sent to the United States. This is one of them. “The 1993 Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin is rich, sweet, opulent, fat, and chewy. Loaded with flavor and character, it should drink well for 12-15+ years. Take the 1990, build on the concentration level, and what you have is the 1993. It requires 6-7 years of cellaring and will last for 25-35 years, rare indeed for modern day red Burgundy. It possesses an extract level rarely seen today in Burgundy. Perhaps it is not economically viable to make wines from such low yields, but this is what great winemaking is all about. It is a shame so few people will ever have the opportunity to taste it. While I am a great believer that low yielding, highly concentrated Pinot Noir deserves plenty of toasty new oak, there is not one new oak barrel to be found in Ponsot's cellar. The average age of the barrels is between 30-60 years, thus proving that there is at least one exception to the rule that the greatest red Burgundies are kept in new oak casks! While the good news is that Ponsot's 1993s are spectacular wines, as stunning as his prodigious 1990s, the bad news is that his yields were minuscule, with the average for all his vineyards approximately 20 hectoliters per hectare, or just over one ton per acre. For some of the grands crus, yields were so tiny that the number of cases that will make it to America is preposterously low. For example, yields for the Clos St.-Denis vineyard were 8 hectoliters per hectare, for Clos de la Roche, 18 hectoliters per hectare, and for Griotte-Chambertin, 23 hectoliters per hectare. Laurent Ponsot stated that only 48 bottles of Chambertin were allocated to America, 24 bottles of Clos St.-Denis (only 400 bottles were produced), and less than 30 cases of Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes. It is not that the United States is getting screwed in the allocation system, but just that so little wine was produced. My reviews are, therefore, largely of academic interest.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One 12 bottle case of 1993 Domaine Ponsot Griotte Chambertin – direct from the domaine in its original wood case Arranged courtesy of Michael Troise Opening Bid: $6,500 26 lot lot 20 DINNER FOR FOUR AT LE BERNARDIN At Le Bernardin, seafood is always the star. No other restaurant in the city makes the simple cooking of fish (and the fish at Le Bernardin is cooked simply, when it is cooked at all) seem so ripe with opportunities for excitement. From the day this posh restaurant opened in New York City, it was recognized for revolutionizing the way fish was prepared. Under the relentless guidance of Eric Ripert, the executive chef, and Maguy LeCoze, his partner in the business, Le Bernardin moves forward without resting. After dining room redesign in 2011, the interior walks in step with the cuisine: up-to-date, lively, intimate and playful. Le Bernardin is one of only nine restaurants in the United States to have earned three Michelin stars. “(1982 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne) is an elegant and fully mature yet admirably fresh white burg nose of baked bread and subtle honey notes is followed by rich, full, detailed and wonderfully focused flavors dripping with plenty of minerality and offering terrific length. This is still drinking perfectly and the acid balance is so good that it should hold at this level for years to come if well stored. In sum, this is a terrific effort and one that I would be happy to drink anytime.” Allen Meadows, Burghound “The 2002 Bouchard Montrachet sports a spicy, mineral-laced nose. Broad, fresh, and detailed, this pretty, light to medium-bodied wine has a deep underlying minerality that lingers in its long, filigree-like finish.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “Spices, minerals, ginger, and pears can be discerned in the aromatics of the 2002 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche. Harvested at 14.1% natural potential alcohol, it is a deep, medium-bodied, sappy wine with an admirably long finish. This is consistently the wine Maison Drouhin gives the longest élévage to, something the 2002 will benefit from, as it needs to flesh out its somewhat tight mid-palate.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • Dinner for four at Le Bernardin • One Magnum of 1982 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne • Two bottles of 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Le Montrachet • One bottle of 2002 Joseph Drouhin Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet - Dinner donated courtesy of The Perlman Music Program - Magnum of Corton-Charlemagne donated courtesy of Jean-Charles Le Bault de la Marinière and Domaine Bonneau du Martray - Montrachets donated courtesy of Dr. and Mrs. Carlos Arango Note: Dinner gift certificates are valid for one year after the date of issuance. Opening Bid: $2,200 27 lot lot 21 A MINI CELLAR OF AMAZING 2005 BURGUNDY “Unless you were hatched from an egg on another planet, you already know that the 2005 vintage in Burgundy was one of the very greatest in history. The Burgundians kidded one another that if they couldn’t make good wine in 2005 they should just give up their secular lives and plead to be taken in by an abbey where they could do penance the rest of their lives for such an inexcusable shortcoming. Simply put, literally all of the wines I tasted out of barrel were among the finest young Burgundies I’ve ever had the privilege of tasting.” Michael Troise “Allow me to cut through everything else and bluntly state that the 2005 Clos des Corton Faiveley is quite simply the best young example of this wine that I have ever had the privilege of evaluating. A richly and densely fruited nose that is at once earthy and quite animale along with breathtaking complexity complements to perfection the big, rich and sleekly muscled flavors that are very firmly structured but again, not at all aggressive and the sheer depth of material on the palate-drenching finish is nothing short of phenomenal. To be sure, this is not and will not be a wine for even the moderately impatient and I'm not completely sure that 15 years will be sufficient to really see it at its best to buy it only with the (resolute) intention to allow it a long and comfortable cellar snooze. Remarkable.” Allen Meadows, Burghound “(2005 Faiveley Echézeaux) has an elegant and highly spiced black fruit nose nuanced by earth, anise and underbrush combines with supple, rich, full-bodied flavors that are sweet, mouth coating and textured, all wrapped in a powerful, detailed and impressively concentrated finish that is strikingly long. You can taste the additional concentration from the tiny yields here.” Allen Meadows, Burghound “This (2005 Faiveley Clos Vougeot) too is very deftly oaked with an earthy and very ripe mix of briar, dark berry fruit and pungent underbrush aromas leading to muscled, energetic and sappy flavors where the mid-palate fat almost completely buffers the firm though not aggressive tannins that add a chewy texture to the gorgeously long finish. There is a really attractive underlying tension here but like most of these grands crus, this is a wine for the patient that will last for decades.” Allen Meadows, Burghound Includes: • Six Magnums of 2005 Domaine Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons – direct from the domaine in its original wood case • Six Magnums of 2005 Domaine Faiveley Echézeaux – direct from the domaine in its original wood case • Six Magnums of 2005 Domaine Faiveley Clos Vougeot – direct from the domaine in its original wood case Arranged courtesy of Michael Troise Opening Bid: $15,000 28 lot lot 22 A FULL CASE OF 2009 CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD “As hoped for in a great vintage, the 2009 Lafite didn’t disappoint with its trademark cedar and black fruit perfume, crunchy and tangy, ripe berry fruit flavors and a lacy, Chantilly cream texture that finishes so elegantly and seamlessly in the mouth as to be absolutely seductive. This is Lafite with its best, classic foot forward and will no doubt go down in history as one of the greatest ever made. This Lafite is pure Sophia Loren, wearing an off-the-shoulders, tantalizingly low cut dress with sensual perfume to match her fiery eyes. Time for a cold shower.” Michael Troise Includes: • One 12 bottle case of 2009 Château Lafite Rothschild – direct from the château in its original wood case. Bettina and Don Bryant are pleased to host one couple for two nights in the private guest house of their residence nestled in the hills in the heart of Napa Valley. The home celebrates the Bryant’s extensive collection of modern and contemporary art. An intimate dinner highlighting their stunning wines will be included. Since its debut vintage in 1992, the Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has always been 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from a 13-acre vineyard atop Pritchard Hill, overlooking Lake Hennessey. It is a magnificent site that has served as a catalyst for other producers to plant vineyards in this gorgeous, distinctive micro-climate and terroir. The Bettina cuvée, named after vineyard President Bettina Bryant, is a proprietary blend from viticulturist David Abreu’s three estate vineyards, Madrona Ranch, Thorevilos, and his estate on Howell Mountain called Lucia. Often dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it usually includes a considerable amount of Cabernet Franc and smaller quantities of Merlot and Petit Verdot. “Bryant’s flagship wine, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill offers a rare but magnificent forest floor/floral aromatic profile with lavishly rich, ripe notes of crème de cassis, blueberry and black raspberry liqueur. Fleshy, opulent, full-bodied and multidimensional, it conceals some significant tannins behind its wealth of extract and fruit. From a first-growth quality, hillside vineyard (13 acres), this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeously pure as well as impeccably well-balanced with a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood. In fact, the new oak component, which is significant, is largely obliterated by the wine’s stunning fruit.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “The seductive 2012 Proprietary Red "Bettina" offers up a more Margaux-like femininity compared to the overwhelming power and richness of the Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend sourced from three of David Abreu’s vineyards – Madrona, Thorevilos and Lucia. Notes of Christmas fruitcake, underbrush, blackcurrants, black cherries, licorice and spice box emerge from this complex 2012. At this stage, it is more evolved and aromatically satisfying than the pure blue and black fruits of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Full-bodied and opulent with impeccable balance as well as purity, this wine is already hard to resist because of its surprising complexity and poise.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • Two night stay for two in the Bryants’ private guest house • An intimate dinner for two highlighting world class Bryant Family wines • Private tour of the Bryant Family Vineyard estate and winery with a tasting of select wines hosted by winemaker Marc Gagnon • One Magnum of 2012 Bryant Family “Bettina” Proprietary Red • One Magnum of 2012 Bryant Family Cabernet Sauvignon Donated courtesy of Bettina and Donald L. Opening Bid: $1,000 33 lot lot 27 2012 MAGNUMS DIRECT FROM CHATEAU HAUT-BRION In the classifications of 1855 ahead of the International Exhibition in Paris, Château Haut-Brion was classified Premier Grand Cru, as the only estate from Graves among the three established First Growths of the Médoc. The prices of Haut-Brion in the 19th century were consistently higher than those of any other Bordeaux wine. After a series of unsuccessful owners during difficult times, the American banker, Clarence Dillon, bought Château Haut-Brion on May 13, 1935 for 2,300,000 francs. Several unverified anecdotes surround the acquisition, as Dillon was believed to also consider buying châteaux Cheval Blanc, Ausone or a majority share in Margaux, but didn't care to make the trip on a rainy, chilly day, and chose Haut-Brion for its proximity to Bordeaux and riding facilities. One account claims Dillon never even got out of the car! “The 2012 Haut-Brion (65% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc) is certainly one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage, with a dense purple color, classic nose of crushed rock, lead pencil shavings, black raspberry, blueberry and flowers. The wine shows subtle barbecue smoke notes in the background, but is full-bodied, stunningly concentrated and builds incrementally, yet finishes with luxurious, almost extravagant amounts of fruit and intensity. From only 46% of the production, this is an absolutely remarkable effort from the Dillon family and their winemaking team of the two Jean-Philippes.” “The 2012 Quintus (89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc) is made in a firm, structured style with a hint of minerality, dark plum and black currant fruit, touches of cherries and spice, along with some background oak. It is medium-bodied, well-made, and pure.” “The 2012 Le Dragon de Quintus, has elegant raspberry and blueberry notes in a blue-fruited style. Minerality is present, and the wine is perfumed, floral, medium-bodied and best drunk over the next 10-12 years.” All quotes from Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • Three Magnums of 2012 Château Haut-Brion • Three Magnums of 2012 Château Quintus • Three Magnums of 2012 Château Le Dragon de Quintus Donated courtesy of HRH Prince and Princess Robert de Luxembourg, Domaine Clarence Dillon Opening Bid: $2,500 34 lot lot 28 A LUXURIOUS NAPA VALLEY VACATION Needless to say, anything that comes from the hands of the talented and hard working Bill Harlan turns into gold. Well, no more. It can fairly be asked now, wryly, whether perhaps now it’s Mouton Rothschild which is the property down the road from Pontet Canet. “I remember tasting the immortal 1945 Pontet Canet thinking there couldn’t possibly be another vintage of this wine to surpass it. I was wrong. The 2009 Château Pontet Canet is the richest, most fragrant, most gloriously layered wine I have ever had the privilege to taste from this impeccably run property.” Michael Troise “An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Imperial of 2009 Château Pontet Canet - direct from the château in its original wood case Arranged courtesy of Michael Troise Opening Bid: $3,800 37 lot lot 31 A FULL CASE OF THE INCREDIBLE 2010 CHATEAU LAFITE “This exceptionally rich, thick Lafite came in with the highest level of natural alcohol (13.5%) ever achieved at Lafite Rothschild. To put that in its proper context, the 2009 and 2005 were 13.3% and in the hottest Bordeaux summer ever recorded in over 200 years, the 2003 achieved 12.8%. A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot, all harvested between October 9 and 14, the 2010 exhibits an extraordinarily dense color, an unctuous texture and sweet black currant fruit intermixed with graphite, charcoal and truffle notes. A director Charles Chevalier told me, between July and the October harvest, Bordeaux had its driest weather since 1949, but it never got excessively hot. Hence the tiny berries, freshness and extraordinary precision of Lafite Rothschild. This superb effort will undoubtedly shut down slightly once it is bottled despite a pH of 3.8. It needs no building up because much of Lafite Rothschild has now become an obsession with the wealthy Chinese and most of it will undoubtedly be consumed before it ever hits its prime. Ideally, it should be cellared for 10-15 years and drunk over the following 50+ years.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Enough said. Word had come from France that Chef César Ramirez and his restaurant, Brooklyn Fare, had been awarded three Michelin stars, its highest rating - three. Young chefs all over the world aspire to receive just one. History even records that the great French Chef, Bernard Loiseau, committed suicide after losing his third star. And so it goes. What was it then about Brooklyn Fare that drew such acclaim from the world’s most notoriously strict critics? What Chef Ramirez does with seafood literally no one in the world does. To sample his courses of sublime creations is to be awe struck by his unmatched creativity and skill. To go to Brooklyn Fare is to know that you will be eating the freshest, rarest, most artfully prepared bounty from waters all over the world, all flown in daily, no matter from where. Japanese fish we Westerners have never even heard of are always on the menu, flown in directly by Chef Ramirez’s buyer at the Tsukiji market in Tokyo. Okay, you’re sold. You’ll just call to make a reservation, right? Wrong. Opening Bid: $2,800 39 lot lot 33 MIDNIGHT IN PARIS Everybody dreams of having an apartment in Paris. The Weisers’ 2-bedroom apartment on the Ile Saint-Louis will surely fulfill that dream. The winning bidder will be spending seven days and nights in this unique apartment located on quai Bourbon in the heart of Paris, just steps from Notre Dame! According to Jacques Hillaret, the quai Bourbon was built between 1614 and 1646 and owes its name to the Royal Family of the Bourbon. All the buildings along the quai date back to the 17th century and overlook the Seine, just above the bridge LouisPhillipe. King Louis-Phillipe placed the first stone on the bridge on July 28, 1833. When you look from the windows of the drawing room to the left, you see the church of St. Gervais. The construction of the church began when Lutetia (Paris under the Roman Empire) was merely a swamp. As you enter the apartment, the mahogany console on the right is English 19th century and the two chairs on either side are Danish 1920s. The prints on the wall are by Nicola Vanni, who worked in Naples between and 1750 and 1770. As you proceed into the drawing room, you will see a sculpture of Theseus fighting the centaur, Bienor, by Antoine-Louis Barye and cast by F. Barbedienne after a plaster shown in the salon of 1850. Copies of it can be found in several museums in Europe and America. The chaise lounge to the right is Swedish 18th century. The four drawings are by Bouchet, one of the architects who collaborated on Paris’s Madeleine church. The mirror above the fireplace dates from Napoleon III. The two sculptures on the mantelpiece are of Amerindiens, a European 19th century vision of America. The fireplace is Louis XVIth in style and the back plate is an original 18th century piece. The master bedroom is covered with a fabric designed by Braquerie in the 1850s. The painting on the wall is by Danish post-Impressionist, Julius Paulsen, and the mirror is Provençal 18th century. The chest of drawers and the two side tables are original pieces built during the Napoleanic era and the four Biscuitware pieces are Danish 19th century, an allegory of the four seasons. The guest room is covered with a fabric called “The Lion and the Muses”. The photographs, representing views of Paris, are late 1870s by Quinet, Lorgnier and unknown. The small game table is Louis XVI and the books on the way to the bathroom are from the repertoire of the French theater. During your visit you will discover much more about the apartment, its furnishings and the Ile Saint-Louis. The island is its own microcosm, offering great dining, people-watching and shopping. All of this can be yours with a winning bid tonight. Donated courtesy of Ambassador and Mrs. Ronald Weiser Note: stay to be scheduled for a mutually agreeable date. Opening Bid: $4,000 40 lot lot 34 AN IMPERIAL OF 2009 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD “This is the most backward and unevolved of all the Left Bank (Medoc) first-growths. In 10-20 years, the 2009 Mouton Rothschild should rank alongside the greatest vintages of the last three decades (1986 and 1982). Yields were a small 30 hectoliters per hectare, the final blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot, and the finished alcohol is 13.2% (not particularly high in this vintage). The pH is 3.81, and the index of tannins, the highest ever measured, a whopping 20% higher than the next highest vintage. The tannins, while present, are silky and well-integrated, one of the hallmarks of the 2009 vintage. An inky/purple color is accompanied by classic aromas of crème de cassis, violets, and hints of graphite and background oak. The overwhelming impression is one of layer upon layer of fruit, full-bodied opulence, and good structure. It tastes as if it were 2-3 months old rather than a post malolactic, fully assembled barrel sample ... it’s that young, but so incredibly promising. A 50- to 100-year wine? Probably.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Imperial of 2009 Château Mouton Rothschild – direct from the château in its original wood case Arranged courtesy of Michael Troise Opening Bid: $11,000 41 lot 35 A MAGNUM OF 2009 HARLAN “Even after all of these years and with much more intense competition than ever before, Harlan Estate remains one of the great wines in Napa Valley. The 2009s have fulfilled all the promise they showed from barrel. The 2009 Proprietary Blend Harlan Estate is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Cloves, dark plums, cherries, smoke and graphite add richness and resonance to this powerful, incisive wine. Juicy and exuberant, the 2009 has always had a certain raciness that is impossible to resist. Layers of fruit continue to build to the enveloping, sensual finish. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this hugely delicious wine.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Magnum of 2009 Harlan Estate Donated courtesy of Harlan Estate, owner Bill Harlan, and winemaker Don Weaver Opening Bid: $1,200 42 lot 36 MOUTON ROTHSCHILD – DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER In the last scene of the movie Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Bond uses his knowledge of the inimitable Château Mouton Rothschild wine to expose his enemies. While James Bond (Sean Connery) and Tiffany Case (Jill St. John) are relaxing on a cruise liner, Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd bring a full dinner consisting of Oysters Andaluz, Shashlik, Prime Rib Au Jus, Salade Utopia, and a Bombe Surprise for dessert (complete with a real bomb). Mr. Wint (played by Bruce Glover) poses as the wine steward and opens a bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild ’55 for Bond and Tiffany: “Wine, sir? Mouton Rothschild ’55. A happy selection, if I may say?” After Wint removes the cork with a needle-type air pressure opener and offers it to 007, Bond replies, “I’ll be the judge of that. That’s rather potent. Not the cork, your aftershave. Strong enough to bury anything.” Tasting the wine, Bond adds “But the wine is quite excellent. Although, for such a grand meal I had rather expected a claret.” Wint takes 007’s bait: “Of course. Unfortunately, our cellars are rather poorly stocked with clarets.” Bond rebukes, “Mouton Rothschild is a claret. And I’ve smelled that aftershave before and both times I’ve smelled a rat!” When Mr. Kidd (played by Putter Smith) attacks Bond with two flaming skewers of Shashlik, Bond breaks a bottle of Courvoisier and sprays the contents on the henchman. The cognac catches fire, immolating Mr. Kidd. Well then, in keeping with the fun: Wine anyone – Mouton Rothschild 2004? A happy selection, if we may say. And it comes direct from Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Includes: • One Magnum of 2004 Château Mouton Rothschild • One Magnum of 2004 Château d’Armaillac • One Magnum of 2004 Château Clerc Milon Donated courtesy of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Opening Bid: $1,000 43 lot 37 A VERY SPECIAL, RARE BOTTLE FROM THE MAESTRO’S PERSONAL CELLAR Okay, so you’ll never even touch one of Itzhak’s two legendary violins; probably a good thing anyway. The amount of green you’d have to cough up if you ever dropped one would cut the national deficit in half. Well then, we have a better idea. Spend a few dollars to help support his students and you can have something else from the Maestro’s personal collection – a great bottle of wine. “A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2009 La Mission-Haut-Brion stood out as one of the most exceptional young wines I had ever tasted from barrel, and its greatness has been confirmed in the bottle. A remarkable effort from the Dillon family, this is another large-scaled La Mission that tips the scales at 15% alcohol. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (47% of each) and the rest Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a magnificent bouquet of truffles, scorched earth, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, subtle smoke and spring flowers. The wine’s remarkable concentration offers up an unctuous/viscous texture, a skyscraper-like mouth feel, sweet, sumptuous, nearly over-the-top flavors and massive density. Perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime La MissionHaut-Brion, the 2009 will take its place alongside the many great wines made here since the early 1920s.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Imperial of 2009 Château La Mission Haut-Brion – direct from the château in its original wood case Donated courtesy of Itzhak Perlman Opening Bid: $11,000 44 lot 38 DIVE INTO KAMALAME CAY Off the northeast coast of Andros Island in the Bahamas and accessible only by private ferry or seaplane, Kamalame Cay caters to an exclusive community. The raw, unspoiled beauty of Kamalame, renowned for world-class sailing, game fishing, snorkeling and diving, offers an incomparable blend of ocean adventure and gracious tropical living wrapped in the security and luxury of a private island experience. Includes: • 6 days and 5 nights on Kamalame Cay Private Island, The Bahamas • Beachfront cottage suite • Complimentary breakfast basket delivered daily • One hour-long massage for each guest in the Overwater Spa • A choice of snorkeling or scuba on the barrier reef • Complimentary round trip airport transfers • Kamalame gift upon departure Donated courtesy of David Hew, Michael King, and Vicki and Chris Kellogg Note: Some blackout dates apply. Opening Bid: $5,500 45 lot 39 BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: A FEAST AT BETONY Betony is a Modern American restaurant overseen by Executive Chef Bryce Shuman (formerly Executive Sous Chef of Eleven Madison Park) and General Manager Eamon Rockey (formerly of Eleven Madison Park, Atera, and Aska). It received a James Beard Award nomination for “Best New Restaurant”, and a three-star review in the Times among many other accolades. To support The Perlman Music Program, Betony will be presenting a unique dining experience to tonight’s lucky winning bidders, all curated around a whole animal presentation. Chef Shuman will select a whole beast from one of his farmers and prepare it in its entirety for the table along with bountiful accouterments. Beverage pairings will accompany this amazing feast. “Roederer’s 2006 Brut Cristal is striking in its sense of lift and delicacy, serving as one of many instances where those bringing preconceptions of this vintage’s warmth and ripeness of fruit to their experience may be pleasantly surprised. A garland of honeysuckle and heliotrope complements the subtle suggestions of raw almond and vanilla.” “The magnificent 1986 Château Margaux continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, crème de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential.” “This medium-to-dark ruby-colored wine (1996 Prieur Chambertin) offers beautifully ripe red and black fruits on the nose and fat, dense, chewy, and thick layers of delicious cherries, black currants, and raspberries. It is powerful, full-bodied, and possesses a formidably long finish.” All of the above quotes by Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • Feast for two at Betony, including beverage pairings • Two bottles of 2006 Louis Roederer Brut Cristal • One bottle of 1986 Château Margaux • One bottle of 1996 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin - Donated courtesy of Betony Chef Bryce Shuman and General Manager Eamon Rockey 2006 Roederer Cristal donated courtesy of The Perlman Music Program 1986 Château Margaux donated courtesy of Paula and Fareed Zakaria 1996 Prieur Chambertin donated courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald J. Oehl Note: Dinner gift certificates are valid for one year after the date of issuance. Tax and gratuity are not included. Please confirm corkage policies when placing your reservation. Opening Bid: $2,500 46 lot 40 AUBERT….OH MY “Mark Aubert is one of the contenders for California’s finest practitioner of Burgundian-styled, yet classic, California Chardonnays. His offerings are all made like grand cru Burgundies with full malolactic, the use of French oak and lees stirring, but the purity of fruit, the textural dimensions, and the stunning singularity of his wines can only be matched by a handful of other Chardonnay producers in the world. He’s that good.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “The 2013 Aubert Lauren Estate Chardonnay is made from 15-year-old vines from the old Wente and Mt. Eden clones of Chardonnay planted in Goldridge soils. This wine offers loads of nectarine, honeysuckle, liquefied rock, quince and white currants. The wine has incredible richness, no real evidence of any of the 100% new oak it is aged in, and a multi-dimensional, long finish.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “The 2013 Aubert UV-SL Vineyard Chardonnay is another Sonoma Coast vineyard planted with old Wente clones on the classic deep Goldridge sandy soils of the region. The 2013 Chardonnay UVSL, with loads of nectarine, tangerine oil, mango and caramelized citrus, has a super-core of fruit and tips the scales at 15.8% alcohol. It also offers great structure and a liquid stone minerality. This big, fascinating wine was totally closed when I first tasted it, but is now expressing itself in a dramatic and compelling way.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Please note: only an armful of Double Magnums have been made from this vintage. This format size will never be available for public sale, only for philanthropic donations. Includes: • One Double Magnum of 2013 Aubert “Lauren” Estate Vineyard Chardonnay • One Double Magnum of 2013 Aubert “UV-SL” Vineyard Chardonnay • A position on the Aubert Wines’ mailing list – a coveted position completely bypassing the dreaded waiting list Donated courtesy of Teresa and Mark Aubert and Aubert Wines Opening Bid: $1,900 47 lot 41 A FULL CASE OF 1985 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD “The rich, complex, well-developed bouquet of oriental spices, toasty oak, herbs, and ripe fruit is wonderful. On the palate, the wine is also rich, forward, long, and sexy. This estate compares their 1985 to their 1959, but to me it is more akin to their 1962 or 1953. A rich, complex bouquet of soy, leather, herbs, toasty oak, and ripe fruit is wonderful. This supple, velvety-textured, rich, forward, long and sexy Mouton is clearly the finest Medoc first-growth in 1985.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • A 12 bottle case of 1985 Château Mouton Rothschild Donated courtesy of Suzie and Bruce Kovner Opening Bid: $3,800 48 lot 42 A MAGNIFICENT IMPERIAL OF 1995 MARGAUX If there was ever a bottle of wine that embodied the scope and gravitas of a Beethoven Symphony, it’s this Imperial of 1995 Château Margaux. Simply put, this is a magnificent wine. “The 1995 Château Margaux displays an attractive dark purple color, and a sweet, jammy nose of black-cherries, cassis, and a whiff of blueberries. Rich, powerful, and dense, as well as surprisingly supple in the attack, this low acid wine seduces the taster before some heavy duty tannin makes its presence known in the finish. The official analysis indicates this is the most tannic Château Margaux since 1986. Overall, the wine reminds me of the 1985 vintage, but with more grip. I suspect it will be forward when released, but it will easily keep for two decades.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Imperial of 1995 Château Margaux Donated courtesy of James Attwood Opening Bid: $7,500 49 lot 43 SIX BOTTLES OF 2012 CHATEAU LA MISSION HAUT-BRION “The Château La Mission Haut Brion continues to perform as it has for nearly a century. At firstgrowth levels of quality, the 2012 La Mission Haut Brion is a stunning wine that is full-bodied and very concentrated with notes of graphite, subtle charcoal embers, crème de cassis, blackberry and underlying subtle earthiness. The wine is full and powerful, rich and concentrated. And sure enough, the alcohol level tips the scales at 15% from a blend 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc. This is a big, blockbuster wine that should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • Six bottles of 2012 Château La Mission Haut-Brion – in its original wood case Donated courtesy of Ed Sands and Calvert Woodley Wine & Spirits Opening Bid: $2,200 50 lot 44 A SIX LITER BOTTLE OF 2004 ROBERT MONDAVI RESERVE CABERNET Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To-Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc. The wines of Robert Mondavi always combine the newest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions. Reflecting their origins, they are the product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. “A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this beauty reveals wonderfully sweet black currant fruit, soft tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouth feel, a broad, elegant texture, and an authoritative, pure finish. It possesses both power and elegance, but is not yet fully mature. It should continue to evolve for another 10-12+ years.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Includes: • One Six Liter bottle of 2004 Robert Mondavi Winery Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Donated courtesy of Edith and Robert F.
