HAPPY 9th
Birthday!
Writing this editor’s letter, on Close Up’s 9th Birthday, and in Andrea’s
stead (don’t worry, she’ll be back next month!) I can’t quite believe
how far we have come over the years. This issue, complete with
another fabulous education supplement, I think truly shows how our
magazine, and even our team has transitioned and grown. We’ve
come a long way, learning and listening to our readers and giving
them a truly great local magazine each month!

Transition and growth are both popular topics in this month’s
magazine. When we looked for our September cover star, our
thoughts were someone fresh, new, young, and someone we will be
seeing more of in the next month, who better than Binky Felstead!
Don't miss out our exclusive interview with the Made in Chelsea
favourite on all things Chelsea, fitness and more!
With our September edition, we always provide a deluxe education
supplement, to help ease parents and children into the next stages of
their academic journey. Whether your children are blossoming from
nursery into junior, taking the giant leap into secondary or taking their
first adult steps into sixth form, Close Up has given you the very best
information from our local independent schools.
Within each issue, we make sure that each page is informative, fun to
read and of course offers you the best from your local area. Filled with
your favourite celebrities, beauty finds, fashion trends, local news and
exclusive offers – be sure to check our pages carefully! We truly hope
our readers thoroughly enjoy this fabulous issue!
Until next month, enjoy!

“There’s no magic pill that’s going to
make you skinny…”

Alexandra ‘Binky’ Felstead is best known as being an original cast
member of the hit series Made in Chelsea, which is now in its 9th
series. Close Up caught up with the down-to-earth Made in Chelsea
star to celebrate her being the face of hard hitting, girls-only range Active Woman.
Alongside the supplements, Binky has also been training hard and
has even enlisted the help of one of the trainers that formed part
of Manny Pacquiao’s team in the build up to his latest fight. She is
determined to change the world of macho male fitness into a female
friendly zone.
Hey Binky! Could you tell us a little bit about the new
supplement range you’re launching…
So, it’s with Active Woman, it really helps you keep energised for
when you go to the gym and there are also protein shakes to help
you build muscle, so if you are craving naughty food you could just
have a protein shake to rebuild muscle after a good hard session.
You have obviously had great results; you’re looking very fit and
healthy!
I’m not trying to promote it as ‘get skinny’ it’s
more about keeping healthy. I exercise and
eat well, there’s no magic pill that’s going to
make you skinny, even though I’m sure a few
of us would love that! [Laughs]. It doesn’t
exist.
How often do you work out?
I try as much as I can but usually around
2-3 times a week. In between workouts
the Active Woman Activate shakes and the
Define and Refine tablets really help repair
and build my muscles though, while still
burning fat.
but I guess being in the public eye I do get loads of different opinions
thrown at me without even asking. It’s more about just feeling good
about yourself.
Have you ever gained or lost a lot of weight?
I think when I first joined the show I put on a bit of weight I was quite
young and I didn’t really care. I feel that once you’re in the public
eye, you have more pressure to look good. I used to hate going to
the gym – now I love it.
What beauty products can you not live without?
My eye make-up remover pads from Halo, my MAC Face and Body
Foundation, my Rimmel Sun Shimmer bronzer I love that’s just like a
tan. I love my make-up, I can’t do without my make-up.
What are your top tips for great skin?
I make sure I take my make-up off every night and moisturise
morning and night. I used to have the worst acne at school, I’ve
been pretty lucky as I don’t have any scars but it was bad.
Who would you say is your celebrity beauty icon?
“I’M NOT TRYING
TO PROMOTE IT
AS ‘GET SKINNY’
IT’S MORE ABOUT
KEEPING HEALTHY”
Do you ever work out without a trainer?
Yes, I do a few bits at home when I have limited time. I also have
dumbells and a few other bits of equipment within the Active
Woman range and these are great for at home workouts. I do find
it easier to workout with a friend or a trainer though, I need to be
shouted at. I need to pushed or else I’ll just be really lazy.
What’s your weakness?
I have my cheat days which is naughty. And I’m not a very good
cook so when my mum comes and stays, it’s glorious!
What’s your favourite cheat meal?
My favourite cheat meal has to be chicken jalfrezi curry, sag aloo and
pilau rice.
What do your day-to-day meals consist of?
I have tuna with egg whites, spinach and tomato, and I eat a lot of
meat, a lot of protein for lunch like a salad or I go out and try and eat
something healthy too.
Do you worry about your weight and body image?
Of course! I think every girl does. Every girl my age is going to do so,
I have a girl crush on Blake Lively, she’s really
fit. Her style and everything, she’s really fit. I’m
so jealous.
Moving on to Made in Chelsea, the new
series has just started and I’m sure it’s full
of plenty of drama, how are things now
between you and JP?
Of course. Wouldn’t be Made in Chelsea
without it! You have to wait and see! [Laughs]
But we’re… well, you’ll have to wait and see.
Do you think the show makes it difficult to
have a relationship?
I don’t think the show makes it complicated, it can make it more
intensified obviously, but if they cheat, it’s nothing to do with the
show. They’re just idiots.
Do you find it hard having your whole life on TV?
Yeah, I mean I signed up for it so I have to go along with it but it is
difficult, very difficult. It’s not natural really is it? Having the whole
world look at your life and that can be quite crazy but you just have
to kind of realise that it is just a TV show and you’ve got your own
life to lead and people’s opinions aren’t really necessary all the time.
Which MIC cast member is your favourite to film scenes with?
I don’t have a favourite! They are all good for different things.
What else shall we be looking out for? Are you working on
anything exciting for the future?
So, I have my perfume coming out this month! It’s called ‘Wild
by Binky’. I actually wear it all the time, I love it personally not just
because it’s mine but I do love it! There are also loads of new ranges
coming out with Binky London, lots of new nail colours and lipsticks.
I am also just about to launch my own clothing range, which is
hugely exciting. Watch this space!

TWEED
The heritage fabric undergoes a high fashion
makeover for Autumn 2015. Invest in a tweed skirt this
season and it will pay dividends working effortlessly
with everything you already have in your wardrobe.
Stylish and durable, tweed has been keeping people
warm for over 100 years, and comes in a multitude
of colours and patterns. Choose from houndstooth,
Prince of Wales and windowpane check. Get set to
be spying tweed, plaid and tartan throughout stores.
BROCADE
A nod to decadence exemplified by beautiful
brocade prints will be on show in a variety of styles
this Autumn. Echoing the theme of ultra-luxe, this
look has its roots in lush and expansive fabrics
seen in Edwardian stately homes. Transformed
into a grander and more princely interpretation
of bohemian prints, brocades work brilliantly in
different shapes creating stand-out pieces. It’s
sophisticated yet dramatic, and sure to turn heads.
‘70s
If you’re a fashionista (and even if you’re not) you
can’t fail to have something in your wardrobe
echoing the ‘70s. Whether you opted for floaty
bohemian print maxis or uptown funky flares and
platforms, we have all been revelling in 2015’s
Summer of Love. The good news is it’s going
nowhere, and for a winter warmer that’s bang on
trend choose a roll neck. Already arriving in stores,
you can follow this trend whether you’re on a
budget or looking to invest in a cashmere piece.
FAUX FUR
For cosy and super stylish outerwear, faux fur will
be the perfect addition to any outfit this season.
It was all over the runways from London to Milan,
and comes in a myriad of key shapes. We love
the faux fur gilets which you can throw effortlessly
over a polo, and the shearling coats will keep you
super warm on crisp winter days. Expect to see
snippets of fur on shoes, bags and collars too.
WIN!
CODE RED
The stand out colour this season is red when talking
about fashion trends. The hue was spotted all over the
runways at AW15’s fashion week, and in the midst of
winter’s grey days, red makes for a startling contrast.
Whether it’s a crimson A-line skirt or a traffic-light hued
tailored coat, this look will certainly evoke memories of
a certain classic from crooner Chris de Burgh! If you
buy only one piece in September make sure it’s red.

It’s hard to consider suede in fashion terms without conjuring

The autumn/winter 2015 shows ushered in a sophisticated take
on beauty - rather than zoning in on one feature we instead saw
perfected skin, lightly flushed cheeks and subtle shading combined
to create a rich, groomed look at shows such as Donna Karan,
Herve Leger, Bottega Veneta and Prada. A move towards a more
luxurious, expensive look and the return of lip gloss all speak of a
new chapter in beauty.

Turning back The clock
without resorting to surgery
It can feel as if there is constant pressure on us to look good (and
young) at all times. Photographs of ourselves are often shared on
social media, where friends and strangers alike can view our faces;
sometimes taking the time to comment on or maybe ‘like’ a picture.
Landmark events, such as special anniversaries, our children’s
wedding or the prospect of dating after a divorce or bereavement can
also be motivating factors for us to look for ways to reduce the signs
of an aging face. For actress Gillian Taylforth it was her impending
60th birthday!
Gillian is probably best known for her portrayal of Kathy Beale in East
Enders. She has also appeared in The Bill, Footballers’ Wives and
Hollyoaks, as well as Celebrity Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing and
Loose Women.
Now 59 years old and not afraid to admit it, Gillian had always been
meticulously careful to look after her face. Recently however, the
popular TV star has had a non-surgical skin lift known as Silhouette
Soft. She approached the procedure with great caution as her face
needed to remain mobile and she wanted to continue to emote on
her return to TV screens this autumn.
Commenting on her motivation to have a Silhouette Soft treatment
Gillian said:
“As I approach my 60th birthday and HD TV improves I am
aware that my appearance is scrutinised on television and in the
press. I am keen to age appropriately, but I want to look good
for my age too. However, as an actress it is vital that I have an
expressive face – on the small screen it is often the smallest
gestures which convey our inner emotions – and in fact on my
most recent production, the producers would often caution
younger actresses about treatments which prevented their
faces from moving.”
Subtlety is key
Like Gillian, we all strive to look the best we can for our age, and for
those around us to believe we have achieved this naturally. Healthy
diets and exercise are of course important, but occasionally nature
needs a helping hand. Dr B Beheshti , from NL Clinic, Southgate
concurs:
“We find our clients are looking for a ‘natural looking’ younger
version of themselves. (Gone are the days of the ‘trout pout’!)
They want to look like themselves … but on a really good day!
Silhouette Soft is a ground-breaking new treatment which is
known as the non-surgical skin lift (sometimes referred to as a
thread lift). I recommend it to redefine the faces of patients
30
looking for ways to combat sagging jowls and loss of volume
in the midface area – but who don’t want surgery. This is a
notoriously hard area to treat effectively, yet Silhouette Soft
produces an extremely natural-looking result which leaves the
face completely mobile.”
There is minimal downtime after treatment and the initial results
are immediate. Even better, the results improve over the next three
months! This is because the effects of the treatment are two pronged:
The lifting effect is immediate and discreet - the tension of the inserted
threads lift the sagging skin. The regenerative effect is gradual and
natural - after insertion the reabsorbable cones on the thread anchor
themselves into the tissues and stimulate the body to produce its own
collagen. This action, which continues over time, helps increase the
volume of jowly areas and restores a more youthful shapeliness to the
face gradually to achieve a natural looking result.
The minimally invasive treatment can only be performed by a specially
trained doctor. Local anaesthetic is applied to the face so that the
patient does not feel a thing. Once numb a Silhouette Soft thread is
introduced just under the skin. The procedure takes under an hour,
and whilst there may be a small amount of bruising around the entry
points, this can be covered with mineral make-up, allowing normal life
to resume after treatment.
A typical Silhouette Soft
treatment consists of four
threads, and costs £1,500.
Treatment is offered
subject to the clinician
confirming a patient’s
suitability, but typically
suits someone aged
40+ who can push
the skin on their face
upwards by around a
centimetre. A typical
treatment lasts 18
months – 2 years.
Silhouette Soft is offered
at NL Clinic. More

Leading Man
Tom Hardy talks about his new film “Legend”, and the success he has enjoyed
during a blockbuster year.
This year has seen Tom Hardy ascend to the very top of
the Hollywood tree. Known as a very talented actor since
his breakthrough performance in 2007’s “Bronson”, he has
spent the following years racking up a list of impressive
supporting performances (“Inception”, “Lawless”, “The Dark
Knight Rises”) while also building up his reputation as a
leading man in both independent and blockbuster movies
(“Locke”, “Warrior”, “Child 44”). This month he’s not one
but two London icons in the hard-hitting drama “Legend”,
about the life and crimes of the infamous Kray Twins.
The story focuses on Reggie Kray,
played by Hardy. A rising name
in London’s crime scene during
the 50’s and 60’s, in addition to
his business and rivals he strives
to control his brother Ronnie
(also played by Hardy), a very
intelligent but psychotic man.
For Hardy, the reasons for taking
on the role were immediately
obvious. “It’s a fascinating story,
and a great challenge for me”
he says. “the two brothers are very different, but there
still needs to be that closeness between them, because
they’re by each other’s side constantly. It was great to
work with Brian (Helgeland, director) on his vision.”
realised that, you know, the role of Mad Max is synonymous
with Mel Gibson. There’s a large group of people who
love Mel as Mad Max and if it’s not Mel then it’s not Max,
so I was a little bit crestfallen for a moment. Then what I
understood from further conversations with George was
that there was no need to replace, or try to do better, or try
to do something new. Ultimately George and Mel went on
a journey for three movies and the legacy still continues to
develop, and it was time for me to switch in… Max is created
by George, so I just had to let him be the anchor of that
and do what he wanted me to do.”
Months of tough shooting followed, but
it wasn’t until Hardy saw the finished
film that he knew exactly what he and
his fellow cast had accomplished.
“What I saw… was a relentless
barrage of complexities simplified in
a fairly linear story” he says excitedly.
“I suddenly got what George was
talking about, actually. Because for
seven months, the hardest part of it
for me was trying to work out what
George wanted me to do at any given minute. But because
he’s orchestrating such a huge vehicle, literally, in so
many departments, and his signature is on every single
detail of that… I got frustrated [during the movie’s shoot].
There was no way that George could have explained what
he could see, in the sand, while we were out there.”
“tHe twO BrOtHerS
Are verY DIFFerent
– BUt tHeY’re BY
eACH OtHer’S SIDe
COnStAntLY.”
You might have thought playing two leads in the same
film would have felt like a lot of pressure, but the
talent surrounding Hardy on set proved to be a great
help. “It wasn’t just on me, it was very collaborative”
he explains. “(My stuntman) acted opposite me for
each part, which was very important for getting the
connection between the brothers across on screen.”
Far more pressure was his signature moment for 2015- the
blockbuster “Mad Max Fury Road”. An incredible piece of
filmmaking, the ambition of director George Miller didn’t
ease the apprehension Hardy felt before taking on the role
originally made famous by Mel Gibson. “I was excited and
jubilant to land the part, and like any actor you get excited
when you land a part because it’s brilliant!” he says at a
press conference for the film earlier in the year. “Then I
So, it very much looks as if Tom Hardy’s potential to
become a leading man of substance has been realised,
but what’s next for the superstar? “I’ll always look for roles
that present a challenge, that stretch me as an actor” he
explains. “I’ve been very lucky to work with a lot of talented
people on projects that do just that.” He appears to have
found one opposite another great actor of our generation,
Leonardo DiCaprio, in the drama “The Revenant”. Set in
the 19th Century, the “Titanic” actor plays a hunter out for
revenge when he is betrayed by his group (led by Hardy)
and left to die in the wilderness. The film is scheduled
for release in January of next year, during Oscar season
no less, and should provide the beginning of another
blockbuster year for our favourite big screen tough guy!
“Legend” is released 11th September and is reviewed in this issue.

success of “Fast and Furious 7”, and the future of
one of the world’s favourite franchises.
This month one of the biggest movies of 2015, “Fast and Furious 7”, comes to DVD
and Blu Ray. Making over $1.5Billion worldwide at the box office, the film struck a
chord with audiences who have now been following the adventures of Vin Diesel and
his co-stars for over a decade. Now 48, Diesel has become the face of the franchise,
having appeared in all but one of the movies.
This time out his character, Dom Toretto, and his gang of high speed international
heisters come up again the fearsome criminal Shaw (Jason Statham), out for revenge
for the death of his brother in the last film. “We’ve been playing these characters for
over 15 years… we need to show the evolution of these characters” Diesel says of
the film, which shows a more mature side to the tank top wearing action hero (“who’d
have thought we’d see Dom Toretto in Tom Ford!” he jokes about one scene where
his character appears in a designer suit).
“A LITTLE SCENE IN ‘FAST AND
FURIOUS 6’ COULD LEAD TO A WHOLE
SEQUENCE IN A FUTURE FILM”
The centre-piece of the film is Diesel’s fight with Statham, two action icons
coming together in a jaw dropping encounter that the filmmakers
wanted audiences to remember. “It started with the director
James Wan, who just did such a great job directing this
movie” he recalls at a press conference for the film.
“He came over to my house and said ‘I really
want to do something dynamic with the DomShaw fight… (we used) a martial arts from the
Phillipines. James Wan set up a scenario for
us to push the envelope, and we wanted
to have a fight that was unique, and that
gave it a unique element.”
Aside from its box office success, the
film will of course be forever linked
with the death of star Paul Walker,
who died while filming the movie in
2013. The film is dedicated to his
memory, and Diesel has been vocal
in his grief for his lost friend. It’s hard
to see a way forward without the
actor, and while Diesel won’t be
drawn on Walker’s death or future
films (“Fast and Furious 8” has been
scheduled for a 2018 release), he
did hint at future instalments. “The
way we make these movies, we
kind of embrace their mythology”
he explains. “A little scene in ‘Fast
and Furious 6’ could lead to a
whole sequence in a future film.”
“Fast and Furious 7” is out
on DVD and Blu Ray now.

recipes to keep you light and refreshed! These quick and easy salads will
help you achieve just that and still be mouth wateringly delicious.
Autumn Fig Salad
Ingredients:
50g walnut halves
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
3 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp clear honey
250g pack white chicory
140g pack red chicory
1 pack figs, cut into quarters
50g gorgonzola piccante, crumbled
2. Make the dressing by whisking together the red wine vinegar,
olive oil and honey in a bowl.
3. Slice each head of chicory lengthways, then trim the base to
separate the remaining leaves. Place in a large salad bowl and
toss through with the dressing.
4. Spoon the chicory onto a large platter or plate, then place the
fig quarters on top. Finish by topping with the walnuts and
Gorgonzola.
Method
1. Break any of the larger pieces of walnuts in half. Heat a frying
pan over a medium heat and add the walnuts. Stir continuously
for 1–2 minutes, until warm, watching closely as they are easy to
burn. Leave to cool.

4 British chicken breast fillets
2 red peppers, seeded and quartered
150g belazu barley couscous
140g pack watercress, rocket & spinach salad
2 tbsp green olives, halved
2 belazu beldi preserved
Lemons, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped coriander
Method
1. Mix together the harissa and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and
brush the chicken and peppers with the mixture.
2. Cook the chicken and peppers in a preheated griddle pan or

FILM INTERVIEW
OLIVIA Cooke
The breakthrough British star on her
new heart-wrenching role.
Up until last year, Oldham-born actress Olivia Cooke has made a
name for herself on the small screen, in British TV roles such as
the mini-series “Blackout”. In 2014, however, she made a trio of
appearances that made the world stand up and take notice- the
horror films “The Quiet Ones” and “Ouija” as well as the scifi thriller “The Signal” established her as the one to watch,
and she continues that momentum with hotly tipped
drama “Me, Earl and The Dying Girl”, out this month.
Based on the best-selling teen novel by Jesse Andrews,
Cooke plays Rachel, a high schooler with a terminal illness
who forms a special bond with two boys, who cheer her
up with their parodied of famous films. For Cooke, her
love for the project began on page one. “I loved the
book” she says at a press event for the film, “(the author)
writes in a way that feels so natural, in a way that you
could imagine people saying these lines in real life.”
“I WANTED TO DO IT JUSTICE
BOTH BECAUSE OF THE BOOK
AND BECAUSE OF PEOPLE
WHO GO THROUGH THESE
ILLNESSES IN REAL LIFE.”
A lot of film critics have praised the chemistry between the
three leads, and Cooke has nothing but positive things to say
about her co-stars Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler. “We all stuck
together throughout filming, and although we are all quite
different it made for a very close friendship” she beams.
The project also offers her a chance to play a role with more
substance, a person facing a terrifying illness who must go through
the emotional and physical turmoil that comes with it. “I was drawn
to the role because I thought it would be a chance to challenge
myself” she explains, before adding “she goes through so much
in the film, that I wanted to do it justice both because of the book
and because of people who go through these illnesses in real life.”
The film has already been a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, and is
tipped to be the surprise hit of the year. In the future, however there’s
a mixture of small and big screen opportunities coming up for the actor.
Cooke is a series regular in “Bates Motel” (a prequel to the “Psycho”
film series), while in cinemas she takes the title role in the hard-hitting
independent drama “Katie Says Goodbye”. However, if “Me, Earl and
The Dying Girl” lives up to experts predictions, she may find herself
much more busy in 2016!
“Me, Earl and The Dying Girl” is out now.

The summer’s in our rear view mirror, and it’s time to look forward to all the huge cinema releases on the horizon in

Zac Efron gets the party started
as an up and coming dance DJ
named Cole, taken under the wing
of an old pro (Wes Bentley) in this
dramatic debut from the makers of
the documentary “Catfish”. Things
becomes difficult, however, when
Cole falls for his mentor’s girlfriend
(Emily Ratajkowski), as well as
struggling to find his own unique
style. Energetic, sexy and with
some great music, it’s nothing you
wouldn’t expect from the trailers
but Efron’s charm and the vibrancy
of the LA landscape make it
entertaining at the very least.

Remember the name - Shameik
Moore, star of indie drama “Dope”,
delivers a breakthrough performance
as Malcolm, a hip-hop obsessed
geek who is given a chance to rise
to the top of the LA elite. With a
script and characters that make it a
standout in the Urban Drama genre,
“Dope” has an awful lot to say and
in Moore a charismatic mouthpiece
to say it. One of the more unusual
films of the year, but also perhaps
one of the best.

Owen Wilson must get his family
to safety after moving to Southeast
Asia just as a violent political
uprising happens. With bloodthirsty
locals keen to dispatch Westerners,
Wilson must trust his wits and a
mysterious ex-pat (Pierce Brosnan) if
he is to make it through the carnage.
Owen Wilson as an action hero? It’s
exactly as unpleasant as it sounds!
Running from one unlikely scenario
to another, the film limps to the finish
line without really ever grabbing your
attention.
Tom Hardy’s been a busy boy this
year, appearing in blockbusters such
as “Mad Max Fury Road” and smaller,
more quirky prospects such as “London
Road”. Here he takes on two- that’s
right, two- of the most iconic figures in
London history, playing The Kray Twins,
Ron and Reggie, in this story of their rise
to become two of the Capital’s most
infamous figures. Hardy doubly shines
with two great performances, and while
the film doesn’t delve quite as deeply as
you would want, Hardy’s double trouble
is worth the price of admission alone.

MISS JULIe
IrrATIONAL MAN

(11th September)
She’s helped save the world in “Inception”, and diced
with the darker side of the oil business in this year’s “A
Most Violent Year”. Now, one of my favourite actresses
Jessica Chastain heads for somewhat more sedate, but
no less thrilling, territory in an adaptation of the classic
1900’s play “Miss Julie”. Set in Ireland, Chastain plays
the title role, the rich daughter of a Count whose life
becomes complicated when she attempts to seduce her
father’s valet (Colin Farrell). Co-starring Samantha Morton,
expect gasps, sexual tension and a critically acclaimed
performance from Chastain.
The annual Woody Allen film, which was a huge hit at this
year’s Cannes Film Festival. Controversial star Joaquin
Phoenix takes the lead as a malcontent philosophy professor,
whose malaise is cured when he gets into a relationship with
a young student (Emma Stone, once again working with Allen
after last year’s “Magic In The Moonlight”). With over sixty
years in show business and hundreds of films to his name,
does Woody Allen still have what it takes? The critics think so,
and you’ll find out this month!

Dismissed as “The Hunger Games with boys” before it
came out, “The Maze Runner” surprised audiences with a
mixture of strong performances and a compelling story when
it was released last year. As with all of these book-to-film
adaptations, there are many sequels in the works, and this
second instalment find Dylan O’Brien once again in the lead as
Thomas, who leads a group of boys in their search to uncover
the organisation that put them in the dreaded maze featured
in the first film. If this new film is as good as the first, this
franchise could well give Katniss & Co a run for their money!
(18th September)
Disaster movies are back! “San Andreas” mopped up
at the box office earlier this year, following in its rubblestrewn footsteps is “Everest”, based on true events.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke and Sam Worthington are
among a star-studded cast who recreate the 1996 Mount
Everest Disaster, where several climbers were trapped
on the infamous mountain during a horrendous blizzard.
Shot in 3D, this should be a vertigo-inducing, moving
blockbuster drama.

Boarding the plane at 6.30am with no sleep, no food and no make-up, 17 hen partygoers are all yelling ‘woo-ooh’. Stephanie’s hen weekend is about to become an
unforgettable experience. So here is how it all began, our trip to Marrakech…
By Leah Shakallis
The Domaine Rosaroum luxury private
villas were created to answer a very
specific demand, this being to make
luxury and opulence become accessible.
All of this takes place in a very authentic
atmosphere, a haven of peace. When our
hen organisers, Joanna, Charley and Amy
were given the job of finding somewhere
stylish, hot, exclusive and fun, never in our
wildest dreams did we think they would
find a place that had this in abundance.
We spent the day relaxing, getting
to know each other and much more
importantly, tanning! We were all in our
element. The staff at Domaine Rosaroum
were outstandingly welcoming and
accommodating, from the small touches
such as fresh fruit, bottled water, slippers,
dressing gowns and daily room service,
to the gorgeous food, fun atmosphere
and helpfulness as we looked to explore
Marrakech.
We arrived at our home for the next 3 days
and the girls had a few surprises for us
in store. Rushing to the bride’s masterbedroom, we had to see what was waiting
behind the door. An incredible bouquet
of red roses and her favourite Jo Malone
gift set lay beautifully on her bed full of
petals. Of course from her loving groom,
Peter. Scattering through our surprise
personalised goodie bags, we were gifted
with all the essentials a girl simply must
have, but in 40 degree heat, all we could
think about was unpacking and heading
straight into our very own private pool.
As the evening drew closer, all the girls
dressed to impress for our meal at Lotus
Privilege restaurant. A driver from the
restaurant collected us all, complementary.
We were met by a traditionally-dressed
employee at a forbidding path. Nestled
through a dark and meandering narrow
alley-way, lay a lovely hidden gem, laced
with luxuriant flowers, exotic plants, and
authentic decor. From the open air central
garden to the awe-inspiring interior, only
one word does it justice: breathtaking.
To highlight the ambience of this very
extraordinary restaurant, entertainment is
also provided in the form of a belly dancer
and traditional Moroccan musicians.
Regrettably, due to our lack of sleep for
a good 24 hours, the girls downed their
cosmopolitans and off to bed it was.
Up bright and early, we were woken to
the smell of fresh pastries and pancakes,
yum! The attentive staff had organised an
incredible breakfast spread. As written in
our itineraries, Saturday is a ‘FUN DAY AT
NIKKI BEACH’. Located in the Palmeraie of
Marrakech, the space is built around a freeform swimming pool with tented cabana
beds and an outdoor bar. A dressed-up
group of Marrakech jetsetters arrive
in black swimwear and the bride in her
exceptionally special Maison Michel hat, to
totally conquest the numerous bed-style
lounges, where the day will unfold with a
subdued tanning scene eventually turning
in to a champagne spritzing party!
As we begin to relax, another surprise from
the groom, CHAMPAGNE! At 2pm we sat
down to a menu of fish, light salads and
travel
more (that won't give you a swimsuit pooch), complimented by
champagne and rosé. The party had then begun; we spent the
rest of the afternoon dancing away in boozy bliss.
Unfortunately, attributable to a mix of cocktails, champagne and
of course, SHOTS, we were not feeling immensely prepared to
get all set and head out for a meal and even more drinks! With
the bride out for the count in her bed, unable to move, cursing
and physically unstable, it seemed like a night in was very much
needed for us all. So girls, what happens when your morals
have gone straight out the window after a boozy pool party?
McDonalds! Thanks to the lovely staff at Domaine, we waited
patiently for our 16 McDonald’s meals, (as mentioned, man down,
the bride was totally misshapen and knocked-out in her masterbedroom). Just as it should be on your hen I suppose…
Fresh and ready to enjoy our last day, we headed off to the
extremely sought-after Marrakech markets. Arriving at the souk,
the air is rife with cries of gypsies, snake-charmers, wandering
minstrels, magicians, and folk-singers. If you’re not paying
attention, you could end up with a monkey on your shoulder
or snake wrapped around your arm. Overwhelming? Yes! But
they are the perfect amalgam of colour, energy, and vibrancy.
Moroccan vendors can be annoyingly persuasive. You will be
pestered by shopkeepers on entering the souk, but it is nothing
a firm ‘no’ can’t tackle. The hard part is over- the chaos has sunk
in and you are feeling confident strutting through Marrakech’s
bamboo-covered souks. Savour the smell of spices drifting
up your nose, follow colour, go where your eye takes you, turn
into little alleys, and duck into the tiniest of shops. There is a
surprise at every corner – brightly-coloured glassware, shisha
pipes, fragrant spices, embellished kaftans, handcrafted bags
– you name it, they have it. It is easy to spend hours ambling in
Marrakech’s serpentine souks- you are bound to get lost, but that
is the fun of it. Fortunately, we didn’t have this problem as our
driver, courtesy of Domaine, remained close by.
We headed back to the villa for some chill-time by the pool,
waiting patiently for our personal chefs to prepare a barbeque
whilst enjoying the sounds of our private DJ. After spending the
evening looking back and reminiscing on our hilarious and funfilled weekend, we were out of bed and ready to head home.
With unforgettable memories and a group of new friends
made, Stephanie’s hen will definitely be one to remember. Girls,
let’s raise our glasses to a fabulous weekend and a sure to be
spectacular wedding!

Containing all the latest information from the finest schools in your area
The independent school system in the UK is one of the finest in the
world, and you are fortunate to have some of the best schools in the
country right on your doorstep. In today’s economic climate, making
the right choice for your child’s education is of paramount importance.
Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is
best for their children.
Many schools will be holding open days during the course of 2015.
Encourage your children to come with you and get their feedback after
each visit. Take a notebook along with you, writing down the positive
and negative things you and your child discover from each school. This
will be a useful tool when you are comparing notes! It also provides an
insight into the way a child sees a prospective future school.

A priceless gift
Children only have one real childhood, which should be spent
exploring the world around them, but they also only have one chance
at education in school – and every parent wants that combination to
be the best they can possibly provide. When parents choose to send
their children to private schools many of them have to make sacrifices:
exotic family holidays may become a “staycation” and the new car
may be forfeited for the “old friend”. The gift of a first class education,
however, is an unrepeatable and life-changing experience.
Aspirations
All parents want their children to have the very best opportunities
in life. But what is “best”? Do we want children to be manipulated
by media hype, style gurus and global brands? If not, we need to
ensure that the next generation can think for themselves, have a firm
moral code to underpin their decisions and are well-balanced human
beings. Receiving a first class all-round education can be the first
major step towards achieving these goals.
Transient versus Permanent
Although the UK Economy is recovering, some may still think that
choosing to pay for private education is an error of judgement. Whilst
the ongoing effects of recession will not last for ever, the consequences
of the educational choices we make for our children will!
For most parents who choose private education the fees mean that
budgets have to be balanced carefully, and it’s not uncommon for
grandparents and others to help with finances, even when fees are
modest, such as at our Alice Nursery with full-time fees of £2,930
per term.
Small class sizes and selection
The small class sizes and advantageous pupil/teacher ratios in most
private schools enable staff to know their pupils exceptionally well. As
a result, each pupil is challenged appropriately, so that they neither
become bored with work that is too easy nor disheartened because of
lack of support in areas they find hard. Some schools, like PGHS, are
academically selective. Girls who show academic potential are taught
with others of similar ability, which provides stimulating interaction with
other pupils and staff.
Specialist teaching for younger pupils
Many private schools have both primary and secondary divisions,
allowing younger pupils to be taught by subject specialists from an
early age. At PGHS Art, Drama, Music, PE and Design Technology
are taught by specialists from Year 1, opening new horizons from the
outset.

WIN! A set of fantastic fiction to
give your child’s library a boost!
Simon and Schuster Children’s Books have teamed up
with Close Up Magazine and are giving away ten sets of
these great reads from some of their top authors:
stop Those Monsters!
by Steve Cole age 8+
The Wizard of Oz meets Monsters Inc in
this MONSTROUSLY funny story from
bestselling author phenomenon, Steve
Cole. Bob is a human boy stuck in a land
of monsters, and he’s trying to get out with
the help of three incredible creatures: Verity,
who looks like a giant hamster, Alfie, who’s
about as scary as a bag of crisps, and Zola, a gorgon who
can’t turn people to stone (though she can manage cardboard
at a push). They are on a crazy, death-defying quest to escape
with their lives. Another rollicking middle-grade story from the
author of Cows in Action and Astrosaurs, illustrated throughout
by renowned illustrator Jim Field.

Lasting values and enrichment
opportunities
Private schools pride themselves on setting high expectations in
all areas of school life. At PGHS this means that we expect pupils
to behave appropriately in a variety of situations, always showing
courtesy and consideration for others. Our pupils also benefit from a
range of educational visits and residential courses, which foster both
academic and social development.
Backbone
Now, and in the future, our children need resilience. We need to equip
our youngsters with the skills to survive in potentially difficult or even
dangerous situations. At PGHS nearly all Year 10 pupils successfully
complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award each year. This
involves spending a night under canvas and walking with all their
equipment for 30 kilometres over two days.
Academic matters
Whilst PGHS has come top of The Sunday Times Small Schools
league table for the last five years, we are aware that each student is
an individual and that ‘adding value’ really matters. Success is due
to that magic formula, where girls, parents and staff communicate
effectively to ensure the best possible outcomes. If you think that
your daughter, grand-daughter, niece or other youngster might
benefit from a PGHS education please contact the School Office on
020 8886 1135.

All My secrets

When she discovers she is the heir to a

shock of all is who has left it to her. On a
quest to discover the truth, she goes to a
summer camp on remote Lightsea Island.
However, events take a dark turn on Lightsea and Evie finds
herself even more deeply embroiled in secrets and lies. At least
she can trust her campmates to help her, or can she? A thrilling
new story from the award-winning author of Girl, Missing.

THE HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S BOYS’ SCHOOL
The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School is
a single-sex, independent day school offering
an enthusiastic, positive and challenging
learning environment for creative and
inquisitive pupils. The school produces
confident and self-motivated young men who
are fully prepared for the challenges of the
future. The boys leave knowing that they
have benefited from an outstanding
educational experience, and take with
them the knowledge that this privilege
brings with it a duty of ethical leadership and
social responsibility.
Haberdashers has a strong and supportive multicultural
community at its core. Students make friends across the
most extra-ordinary range of backgrounds and cultures,
and they learn to respect and value each other for their
diversity and difference.
Habs Boys is known for its academic excellence. They
admit the brightest boys and, at every stage of
their development, the curriculum is expressly
designed to keep them involved, stimulated and eager
to learn. Approximately 90% of pupils go on to their
first choice university, with exceptionally high numbers
to Oxford and Cambridge.
Academic achievement is only part of the experience of
life at Habs. The boys enjoy the academic
opportunities alongside the wealth of extra-curricular
activities on offer. As Peter Hamilton, Headmaster of
Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, notes: “The huge
range of extra-curricular activities available ensures
that every boy finds something at which he excels and,
as a result, develops a self-assurance that will equip
him for life.”
The range of the non-academic curriculum is
enormous and the level of participation by pupils very
high. Sport, music, drama, art and debating thrive,
with students regularly gaining national distinction. Last
year, three boys won places at the prestigious National
Youth Theatre, the U14 water polo team were named
as national champions and the school hosted a Gala
Concert at the Barbican. There are also numerous
opportunities for leadership, charity and community
service throughout the school year, including with the
school’s celebrated CCF contingent.
The school offers the best of facilities, including
numerous sports pitches, a purpose-built Music School
and state-of-the-art laboratories. Construction of a
state-of-the-art new indoor sports complex is well
under way (due for completion in time for the start of
the Autumn Term 2015), which will complement the
existing sports centre and provide a significant
enhancement to current facilities, which will be
replaced. This new facility will include a 25 metre, 8
lane swimming pool, fitness suite, gymnasium, squash
courts, multi-use space, climbing wall, conference
room, school shop and sports café.
The school is serviced by a unique coach service
with over 110 stops, spanning a 30-mile radius,
offering an unrivalled provision for pupils staying for
after-school activities.

Is your child struggling with post summer regression? The After-School Learning
Centre re-enforce that reading is key to success. Facing another holiday soon? Here
are their top tips to keep your child going through their vacation:
• Encourage reading throughout the holiday: books, magazines, even cd’s – anything
to broaden their vocabulary.
• Treat English as though your child is learning a foreign language, even if s/he is a
native speaker.
• Your child should be actively working to build vocabulary, writing down and looking
up words and using them in conversation. Five new words a week as a minimum.
• Mistakes in their work? Bad English report? Identify the common mistakes in spelling
or grammar and work on them. This is where reading and active parent participation
help a lot!
• And finally – praise! 5 pieces of praise to every correction!

OPEN MORNING
Saturday 3rd October 10:00am to 12:00pm
Keble provides an excellent all-round education,
combining high academic standards with opportunities
for boys to achieve in Sport, Music, Drama and a
broad extra-curricular programme.
We have a couple of places available in Reception and Year 1 for
September 2015. Occasional places may be available in other year groups.
We are now taking registration for Reception places in 2016.

At Keble Prep every individual counts
Our compact site helps in this regard, with
individuals getting to know each other as their
paths cross many times each day. Visitors will
often comment on the ‘tardis-like’ nature of our
school; from Wades Hill one would not imagine
the space we enjoy and most importantly the
playground areas for boys to run around, let off
steam and build friendships.
This, coupled with a positive building development programme gives an ideal place for the
boys to learn and develop.
KBL134_advertorial.indd 1
The way that we manage our curriculum
also puts the individual at the heart of things.
Smaller class sizes on average than many comparable schools further help our academic staff
really understand what makes each boy tick
and build learning around that knowledge.
In addition our ethos encourages independence (as evidenced in our last ISI inspection
report), and values decency and courtesy.
These, coupled with high expectations in terms
of diligence and behaviour, mean that Keble
Prep is a school where each boy makes strong
progress and where results in later years belie
the non-selective nature of the admissions
process at Reception.
Every boy is both challenged and encouraged
to make the most of his talents wherever they
may be found. For some it is on the sports
field; for others the concert stage or exam hall.
However they are reached, they will be
recognised and celebrated, because for us,
every one counts.

Breadth, Balance & Excellence…
Founded in 1850 and set in 39 glorious acres of playing fields,
woodland and meadow, we are the outstanding Preparatory school
in NW London for 500 girls and boys from 4 to 13 years of age.
We pride ourselves on offering a truly broad, but balanced curriculum, that instils a love of learning for life. Our pupils develop a
‘work hard, play hard’ attitude that senior schools love. We simply
call this ‘The Orley Farm Way’. Like a stick of rock…it runs through
every pupil, parent and member of staff!
An outstanding ethos is supported by exceptional facilities as we
complete an £11 million investment to see us long into the future.
At the centre is a Library that puts learning, research, enquiry and
curiosity at the heart of the school and the forefront of every mindset, from pupils to teachers. Whilst some schools are replacing
books with tablets, we thought we would build the best Prep
School library in the land and have both!
The journey is unique for every child and ends with outstanding
preparation for life, not just the next step. Our greatest aim beyond
education is finding the right senior school where your child will
grow and this is evident in our honour roll that has seen us prepare
pupils for over 40 of the best schools in Britain. So join us for the
journey as we lay foundations for a lifetime.

“This is where I belong”
St Martha’s was founded in Barnet as a Catholic girl’s school in 1903.
As the school’s popularity grew, a senior school was established in
1947 at its current location, The Mount House in Hadley Wood. St
Martha’s still follows the Catholic tradition but has evolved to accept
girls of all traditions and faiths.
The Headmaster Matthew Burke and his faculty pride themselves in
the supportive family atmosphere at St Martha’s, where Sisters still
teach, and have been instrumental in the success of the school, and
the girls who attended, since the school’s establishment.
St Martha’s calm and supportive environment motivates its girls to
develop individuality and become independent learners, encouraging
creativity, initiative and a deep love of learning. Each student is
allowed to develop their own unique talents and is encouraged to
become involved in the local community through a wide breadth of
social projects. St Marta’s is a unique day school in that it is small
enough to nurture and value each girl and large enough to provide
her with a diverse and rich range of learning opportunities.
The school has excellent academic results - 44% of all GCSE grades
were A*- A, 75% A*-B, a 100% pass rate at A Level and every one
of our Upper Sixth students in 2014 got into their first choice of
university with. Additionally, St Martha’s Value Added Score puts the
school in the top 10 of Independent Girls’ Catholic Schools nationally.
St Martha’s has numerous Open Mornings for entry at Year 7 and a
dedicated Open Evening for Entry into Sixth Form. The Admissions
team are happy to organise individual visits and tours of the school.
Please contact them on 0208 449 6889.
