Speaking...
From the time we get up in the morning until we go to bed in the evening
our life is a series of decisions. To get up, what we do after we get up, the clothes
we wear, the food we eat for breakfast and so on through the day. Life moves on
one decision after another. Some of our “decisions” do not require a lot of
thought. Some may be no more than a reflex action responding to habit or
physical need. Some of our decisions may be the result of a process of careful
examination while others are not so much. Some of our decisions may reflect
passionate concern while others are not so significant. But let us not forget, all
of life is a response to decisions we have made.
The question we have to answer is what are the principles that guide our
decision making? None of our decisions are made in thin air. All of our decisions, even the most minor conclusion reflects the principle that guide its development. If saving money is our core principle, then the clothes we choose, the
lunch we eat and the form of transportation we use will reflect that. If making a
good impression is one of our core principles then the clothes we choose and the
places we go and the way we present ourselves will reflect that.
As people of faith the question we have to answer is what are our core
principles? Do our fears guide our life, or our need for attention, or our desire
for power? Or are we guided by the principles that our Redeemer gave to the
disciples, (that would be you and me)? If the latter is the case then our principles will reflect that focus and we will see Jesus message living in what we do.
The principles such as respect for all people regardless of color, language, ethnicity, orientation or occupation will be reflected in our decisions. We will care
for God’s creation given us to use the air, the land and the resources and not
make decisions that simply fill our momentary need. We will see our world not
just as an opportunity to consume but as a call to treasure and pass on. Finally
we will live with a special openness and attentiveness to the marginalized, the
overlooked and the forgotten. The small voice will not go unheard, and the light
will be seen.
The discovery that we will make is that such a life lived on the principles
of our Redeemer is a life empowered by God’s creative presence. It is a life not
mired in the pain and challenges of the past but rather standing alert and ready
on the cutting edge of tomorrow. Let us take onto ourselves the principles that
our Redeemer gave to us (the disciples) that we might share in the unfolding vision of God’s continuing creative vision for our world. May we adopt into our life
God’s creative principles that they might guide us into God’s tomorrow.

Moderator’s Report
Dear BUCC Family and Friends,
Summer is FINALLY here!!! Something new will be built in stages starting this summer.
In May’s council meeting the committee members agreed, that the church’s yard to the south
and west of the parking lot will be home to a mediation area. The council has asked the Pastor
to check with the university architectural and design department if a student would be able to
design the area. The concept would have multiple religious areas allowing anyone to stop by
and meditate. The church would start with an area for Christianity and as funds become available to expand the areas for other religious beliefs.
Also, the council would like some feedback on the possibility of having raised garden containers to the northwest of the church. The reason for the containers is to add some inviting
color to the church without people needing to bend all the way over to weed the garden. We are
looking for ideas to have people eyes drawn to the church since it sets back a ways from the
street. If you have any ideas please let one of the council members or the pastor.

NOTES FROM THE MAY CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING









There will be an informal playtime Sunday School for children during the summer.
A Sunday School Fall Rally will be held the first Sunday after school starts.
We are looking into buying a music copyright license so the music for the hymns can be
projected onto the wall for worship services.
The 2016 South Dakota Annual Conference meeting will be held the first weekend in
June. Kathy Apland will attend and extend the invitation for the 2017 annual meeting.
More volunteers are welcome to serve on the planning team for the 2017 South Dakota
UCC Conference meeting that BUCC will host.
The Western jazz music provided by Terrell Spence at a recent worship service was very
well received. There is interest in asking him to perform for additional worship services
in the future.
A welcoming group is being formed to brainstorm ideas to attract new people to attend
the church.
A Thursday evening discussion group will be held at 6 p.m. during the summer. A selfservice grill will be available for people to cook the meat and/or vegetables that they
bring for the meal. Drinks and chips will be provided.
The next council meeting will be on June 21 and begins with a potluck at 5:30 p.m. followed by the meeting around 6 p.m.

Special dedication of food items~
During each month we collect food for three special ministries that distribute
food to those in need. These include “Feeding Brookings” “The Food Pantry” and “The Harvest Table”. There are receptacles and carts to receive each
of these offerings. That food will be dedicated each 3rd Sunday and will be
distributed shortly after that. Help us to have nice full bins to share and dedicate.
HARVEST TABLE:
A warm-no-cost meal served every Monday night from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the
First United Methodist Community Life
Center, The meal is offered for anyone in
the community looking for good food and
fellowship! If you have questions, contact Vonda Kirkham, Harvest Table Director, 692 4345.
If you have participated in the weekly
Harvest Table, you know that it is more
than a hot meal for those in need. They
also distribute food stuffs and supplies for
families to get through the week, such as
soap, toothpaste, diapers and baby wipes
to name a few. The number of people being served each week has grown significantly over the last few years. In July
285 people were served a hot meal, grocery items were distributed to 145 households, 110 packages of diapers and baby
wipes were handed out to families all at
no cost to the families. The cupboards are
BARE!! The Harvest Table is desperately
in need of supplies. Non-perishable foods,
(canned goods, pasta, rice, peanut butter,
beans, cereal, baby food, formula, fruits
and juice, canned meat and other pantry
staples), personal care items (soap, toothpaste and brushes, shampoo, mouthwash), baby supplies (diapers and baby
wipes are especially needed), paper goods
(paper towels, toilet paper). The needs run
the gamut. If you need it for your house,
the Harvest Table probably needs it as
well. If you aren’t sure what is most needed, money is always “the right size and
color.” With your tax-deductible donations, the Harvest Table staff can shop for
what is needed the most.

our next steps for the garden. If you have ideas that you’d like to offer or are
willing to help with planting, pruning, or weeding we could use your help.
