Hopefully your summer is an easy and enjoyable one. I was privileged to be present for the start of operation of VE2XPO and a contact with W1AW. While we could not have a good conversation with the operators in Newington we did, nonetheless, make the first contact with W1AW as was done forty years ago. Roland Masse, VE2PX, Jean Massicotte, VE2JMK and Jacques Hamel, VE2DJQ are all to be congratulated for their part in the effort. Roland was the original manager in 1967 and came up with the idea and worked it through the city bureaucracy. Jean was in charge of the technical set-up and RAQI made its communications trailer available for the event and the Quebec Radio Museum provided an exhibit and Jacques was able to track down some of the original equipment used in 1967. Thanks are also due to Gille Legacé, VE2XPO, for permission to use his callsign for the station. On June 10 the club hosted the RAQI Annual General Meeting and welcomed amateurs to our meeting place. An exhibit of some of the certificates and awards of Al Daemen, VE2IJ, was shown along with the club's anniversary exhibit from the fleamarket and the small post AGM reception was enjoyed by those present. I would like to thank all of those who helped with the RAQI meeting as it has certainly generated good will for MARC and confirmed MARC's place as a full participant in the Amateur Radio scene in Montreal and Quebec. While the next meeting is not until September we do want to keep in touch with the members. Summer affords an opportunity for outdoor projects, visiting and other activities. Hopefully this will be a good summer for all and I look forward to seeing you in the fall and at our anniversary dinner in October. 2 A L A M A T E U R R DIRECTORS President: James R. Raymond Faguy, VA2RY Operators wanted Expo '67 VE2XPO - July 2007 Forty years ago during Expo '67 VE2XPO contacted over 200 countries. On Friday, July 13, 2007 VE2XPO was again operating from the Expo site. At 15:00 hours in spite of less than favourable conditions Roland Masse, VE2PX, in the presence of the president of RAQI and several local Amateur Radio Clubs contacted W1AW to begin two weeks of operation on Ile Ste-Hélène. Roland Masse, VE2PX, is to be congratulated for organizing the effort and the Union Métropolitaine des SansFilistes de Montréal and Jean Massicotte, VE2JMK have provided great support in organizing the technical aspects of the station. for the scouts. This is a very worthwhile public service project for Montreal area hams and promises to be a lot of fun as well. Not to be outdone, Jacques Hamel, VE2DJQ, of the Musée Québecoise de la Radio, has also put together an interesting exhibit including original station equipment from the 1967 VE2XPO operation. If you are available for any of the days between the dates above, please contact one of the following by email: VA2BGT at bgtljt@sympatico.ca, VE2JT at markmacpherson009@sympatico.ca, or VE2FGL at ve2fgl@excite.com, or drop a note to CHARC, PO Box 528, Hemmingford QC, J0L 1H0 Operators are still needed but this station is worth a visit to say hello and see the items on display. For more information, please contact: John Grow VE2EQL jgrow@sympatico.ca From the Editor’s Desk First, I would like to say a little about our initial edition of the Ham Podcast. Yes it was finally produced and published on the web available at: http://podcam.libsyn.com. I can’t tell at this stage if it was a success. It appears that we had around 88 downloads as of July 01, 2007. From the numbers point of view I can assume that it was some level of success but from feedback comments, well that’s another subject. Anyhow I certainly won’t give up at this stage, it was our initial attempt at something very new so we can’t expect to bowl people over on the first try and especially radio amateurs. So, we have started to produce edition number two and we’ll let you know through the MARC website when it’s available. The web sites that you can obtain information regarding the podcast is: I have an experience in a similar situation. A few years back, I was charged with evaluating training programs for electronic communication technicians and it’s relationship to the actual tasks at hand. Our initial task was to carry out job analysis to determine what was really required of the technician to maintain and keep the facilities operational. This was a long and detailed analysis but to keep the story short. Predominantly, all the equipment was of solidstate design with 95% circuit boards to be replaced on failure, Our results showed that most failures were power related or antenna mismatching and the weakness of the technicians in their ability to use the available (often built-in) test equipment. This was a first-line maintenance/operating activity and not a repair and overhaul requirement. Many installations were remote locations and the technician(s) prime operational requirement was to keep the facilities operating in accordance with specified procedures and practices. I liken this very much to the present day new radio amateur. His prime need is to understand the various modes of operation, what type of equipment is needed to operate in these modes and operate his station in accordances to procedures and regulations. Most of us are unlikely to delve to deeply inside the black boxes however, we do need a A D I 0 C L U B good understanding of the power supplies needed to fire up these equipments and a knowledge of the type of antennas required and how to match them to the so-called black boxes. So yes, the “geek level has change” and I think we must change with it. Just my two-cents worth. Your editor.. Rjcam the Video-n-Podcast Ham, VA2RJC MARC Hosts the RAQI AGM RAQI AGM hosted by MARC. H3E 1T4 From the ARRL ARRAY OF NEW GEAR DEBUTS AT DAYTON 2007 It's always a treat to get your first look at a new HF transceiver at Dayton. This year, there were no fewer than six to drool over. Here, in alphabetical order, is a rundown: Elecraft <http://www.elecraft.com/> announced its new K3 HF and 6 meter A L A M A T E U R R transceiver. It includes many upgrade options, so many, in fact, that you can configure anything from a kit-built 10 W portable QRP radio to a full-featured, contest-ready 100 W rig with *two* high-performance receivers. It is scheduled to ship starting in July. FlexRadio Systems <http://www.flex-radio.com/>, a pioneer in high-performance software defined radios (SDRs), introduced its Flex-5000 HF plus 6-meter transceiver series that promises higher performance and more features than its earlier model. Included are the Flex-5000C, a fully integrated system in a single box, and the Flex-5000D, which includes asecond receiver. Hilberling, the first Amateur Radio transceiver maker from across the Atlantic for some years, announced its PT-8000 transceiver. It's offered as a full-featured HF and VHF transceiver available in 10, 100 or 600 W versions. The North America distributor is Array Solutions <http://www.arraysolutions.com/>. ICOM<http://www.icomamerica.com/ > unveiled its IC-7700 HF + 6 meter transceiver. It appears to be a singlereceiver version of its top-tier IC-7800, sharing the 200 W transmitter, high performance receiver and 7inch display of its sibling. Contesters are the market target, but the IC-7700 may be of interest to anyone who covets the features of the IC-7800 but A D I 0 C L U B doesn't need two receivers or the higher price tag. Ten-Tec <http://www.tentec.com/> has its new Omni-VII HF + 6 meter transceiver on display. The unit's "distributed roofing filter architecture" promises ham-band-only receive performance with a general coverage receiver. Stay tuned for the "Product Review" in July QST. Finally, Yaesu <http://www.yaesu.com/> showed its new FT-450 HF + 6 meter offering. The FT-450 bears some similarities to the Yaesu FT-2000, but with fewer features and a correspondingly lower price. What else? Array Solutions is distributing the SPE Expert 1K-FA solid-state linear amplifier. It is a compact light weight (44 pounds) fully automated, full break-in capable amplifier that puts out 1000 W PEP on 160 through 10 meters (700 W PEP on 6 meters). It has an internal 120 or 240 V ac power supply and antenna tuner. Dishtronix<http://www.dishtronix.co m/> showed off its 100% duty cycle, 1500W output (on all modes) solidstate linear. This is a "serious" amplifier at 65 pounds with the choice of a separate 120 pound linear power supply or 54 pound switcher. Tokyo Hy-Power <http://www.thp.co.jp/> enjoyed a great debut at Dayton this year, showing three HF amplifiers newly introduced to the US market. On display were the HL-1.2KFX 750 W output, HL-1.5KFX 1 kW output and HL-2.5KFX legal limit amplifiers as well as the HL-500V 2 meter linear. All are solid state. THP also offers a new legal-limit automatic antenna tuner. Kenwood<http://www.kenwood.com/ > announced a new V/UHF mobile transceiver, the TM-71A. Of particular note is free software that allows downloading repeater data from ARRL's marcOgram - July 2007 5 M O N T R E Travel Plus <http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?item=99 30> directly into radio memories. It also can function as a crossband repeater. Yaesu introduced a new V/UHF transceiver especially for hams on the go! The FTM-10 is designed to mount on the handlebars of your bike or motorcycle so that you don't even need a mic! Just talk into the front panel, and you're on the air! Radio accessories are always popular at Dayton and MFJ can always be counted on to have new products. Topping the list this year is the MFJ998 1500 W Intellituner. This legallimit auto tuner is designed to handle loads from 12 to 1600 ohms from 160 to 10 meters and includes two outputs and sophisticated memory, protection and control features. West Mountain Radio <http://www.westmountainradio.com/ >, the RigBlaster and RigRunner folk, have branched out into the audio side of your radios. They introduced a DSP-equipped speaker designed for the HF operator who would like more signal and less noise. Palstar <http://www.palstar.com/> has a new AT1KP tuner that covers 160 through 6 meters. By switching in the 160 meter inductance only when needed, the AT1KP reduces the minimum capacitance of the tuner so it can cover 6 meters. A L A M A T E U R R Army MARS HF e-mail system passes "hurricane test" For this first comprehensive trial run, Army MARS mobilized a new Winlink digital communication system, with Air Force and Navy-Marine Corps MARS members providing active support. Operation Sidewinder marked the first comprehensive demonstration of the TSA's partnership with the Army MARS, a Pentagon-sponsored organization of volunteer Amateur Radio operators that supports federal government agencies during emergencies. MARS has some 5000 members in its separate Army, Air Force and NavyMarine Corps branches. Operation Sidewinder called for a Category 3 hurricane to make landfall at Miami, continuing on toward Houston. To drill MARS's capabilities in multiple emergencies, a possible terrorist operation concurrent with the weather emergency was added. Earlier this year, the TSA, part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), adopted the MARS Winlink emergency communications network for deployment at major airports. The use of Winlink 2000 permits access to SHARES [SHared RESources program of the National Communications System] and MARS systems via conventional HF/VHF/UHF radio circuits. Army MARS Chief Stuart Carter said Operation Sidewinder gave MARS members the opportunity to demon- A D I 0 C L U B strate long-haul HF connectivity, local VHF communication, HF e-mail, a WiFi computer interface with HF radio for e-mail, a TSA HF mobile facility, an Army MARS volunteer's vehicle capable of indefinite HF operations and two small, light and portable HF suites.
