NCAA Champions 1989-90 • Stanford’s 162 Pac-10 victories from Jan. 1, 1990 through Dec. 31, 1999 led the nation in most wins in conference play. • Stanford has made seven Final Four appearances and reached the NCAA Tournament every year since the 1987-88 season. • Since the 1999-2000 Pac-10 regular season, Stanford has won seven of the eight Pac-10 regularseason titles. NCAA Final Four 1990-91 • Stanford has reached the 30-win mark seven times since the 1989-90 season, and set a programrecord with 35 victories in 2007-08. • The Cardinal has won five of the seven Pac-10 Tournaments since its inception in 2002. • From Jan. 1, 2000 through the end of the 2007-08 season, Stanford has accumulated a sparkling record of 242-52 (.823). Olympia Scott-Richardson Kate Starbird WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM • 21 Stanford in FIBA • Head coach Tara VanDerveer, Jennifer Azzi, and Katy Steding were all part of the Olympic Gold Medal-winning USA Basketball Team at the 1996 Atlanta Games. • Tara VanDerveer boasts a career international record of 88-8 at the helm of various USA Basketball teams, including a perfect 60-0 run in 1995-96 as head coach of the USA Basketball Olympic Team. • Current team member Jillian Harmon and 2006 graduate Clare Bodensteiner became the first Stanford players to represent a country other than the United States when they played for New Zealand at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. • Candice Wiggins became the most recent Stanford addition to the USA Senior National Team, helping the American side to the 2008 Good Luck Beijing title. • Current Cardinal players Jayne Appel, Sarah Boothe, Nnemkadi Ogwumike, and Kayla Pedersen have all been part of various championship USA Basketball youth national teams. Photo: Mark Dadswell/Getty Images Jayne Appel WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM • 23 Maples Pavilion Home of champions • Stanford has posted nine undefeated seasons at Maples Pavilion since beginning play there in 1974-75, most recently going 15-0 in 2007-08. • Cardinal women’s basketball games have consistently brought large crowds to Maples Pavilion, most notably eight announced crowds of 7,500. • Maples Pavilion has served as a host site for NCAA Tournament contests in 14 of the past 20 postseasons. Over that span, Stanford has posted a 22-4 record in NCAA Tournament contests played at Maples Pavilion. • Stanford boasts an all-time record of 392-82 (.827) at Maples Pavilion. 24 • WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM • 25 Arrillaga Gymnasium & Weight Room Already home to some of the finest athletic facilities in the nation, Stanford athletics will welcome the addition of the Arrillaga Gymnasium and Weight Room in the spring of 2009. The Arrillaga Gymnasium and Weight Room will be located adjacent to Maples Pavilion, near the southwest entrance. The state-of-the-art facility will include two practice courts for basketball and three practice courts for volleyball. The basketball courts will also be used for recreation when practice is not in session. The courts will be connected to Maples Pavilion through an underground tunnel. In addition, space will be provided for a new Varsity Weight Room. Construction of the Arrillaga Gymnasium began on July 18, 2008 and groundbreaking took place three days later. This project is the result of a generous contribution from the Arrillaga family. The Arrillaga Gymnasium and Weight Room will be completed in the spring of 2009. 26 • WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM Stanford in the Community • Stanford Women’s Basketball annually conducts a mentor program with young girls from the East Side School’s Shoot For the Stars program. • Stanford players participate in a pen pal program with young elementary students at La Entrada School in Menlo Park. Each pen pal receives a player card from their respective Stanford players, and at the end of the year, the Stanford players visit the pen pals’ classrooms. • The Stanford team puts on numerous clinics throughout the year for kids in the local community and at the East Side School. The Stanford football program is housed in the spacious Arrillaga Family Sports Center, which includes administrative offices, meeting rooms and training facilities. The Harvey Bernhard Football Locker Room is located on the ground floor and an extensive weight training facility is located downstairs. The Arrillaga Family Sports Center also includes a restaurant and the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame Room, with its impressive display of Stanford’s 14 Director’s Cups and numerous NCAA trophies. Picturesque Sunken Diamond is home to the Cardinal baseball program. Cobb Track and Angell Field is home to Stanford’s track and cross country programs.
