AVQA News Antelope Valley Quilt Association www.AVQA.org email: info @avqa.org September 2015 Volume 39 Issue 3 A NIGHT OF STRIP POKER USING STRIPS OF FABRIC STRIP POKER IS BACK! This month we will be playing strip poker like we did last year. We will be playing a type of Strip Poker unique to quilters. Our chips will be strips of fabric 2 ½” wide by width of fabric. You will use these to place your bets. The game is designed to win or lose your strips. You may come home with a grand amount, or you could lose them all. It all depends on how the game goes. You do not have to be a heavy gambler to have fun with this game or to take away a lot of strips. To take part, you will need to bring 30 to 40 - 2 ½” strips to bet with. This is a great way to use up leftover fabrics or to clear out some of your stash. If you do not have time to cut strips, you can bring a jelly roll. *Note: Please join us before the meeting for dinner at 5:00pm at the Texas Cattle Co. restaurant located at 44206 10th St West in Lancaster. Free Workshop: Saturday September 12, 2015 How to Make a Quilt from Used Jeans The workshop, the following Saturday, September 12th will demonstrate how to cut apart jeans and design a quilt with the resulting fabric. You will see some samples and discuss options for types of quilts made from jeans (or denim fabrics). If you don’t have used jeans, but would like to observe the demo and participate in the discussion, please let me know or sign up at the meeting. There is no charge for the workshop taught by me, Sue Jacobsen, 1st VP for Programs. Advertisers! Place an ad in our newsletter and watch your business grow! SEPTEMBER FAT QUARTER DRAWING COLOR IS RED! 2 President's Message September 2015 It’s amazing that it’s September already. Exciting things are happening in the guild. We have a different type of challenge this year. Mary Brewer will chair the Challenge and the challenge will be a chatelaine with the AVQA logo and your name on it. (Could be used as a nametag at meetings). I would sign up for the challenge just to get the AVQA logo with my name on it! We still need an Opportunity Quilt Promotion Chair and an Opportunity Quilt Design Chair for the 2016-17 year. Remember, these are both responsible for earning money for those speakers and classes we all love. The holiday party is being planned and on its way to being a success. Purchasing new quilt frames is being investigated. To purchase these we would need more fundraisers. If you have any ideas, give me a call or email. See you at guild meeting. - Carolyn Lundie, President Reminder – wear your name tag at the meeting! Wear your AVQA pin and get an extra door prize ticket! 2nd Vice President's Message September 2015 Opportunity Quilt - Please turn in all remaining blocks outstanding to me at the Guild Meeting. If you need any fabrics to finish Blocks, please let me know. Quilt Show Calling all members! We need quilts for the show. We need your talent. It is not too late to start a quilt or finish UFO’s (Not Unidentified Flying Object but Unfinished Projects.) You can start and finish auction items. We need a theme name for the Quilt Show. We will be voting at Guild Meeting. Some of the theme names we came up at the last meeting: 1) 2) 3) 4) Flight of Imagination Desert Garden Garden of Imagination A Garden for Dreaming If you have any suggestions for the theme name for the Quilt Show theme, please let me know before the meeting. I will add them to the list to be voted on. - Jamie Harrington – 2nd VP 3 Meet Your Guild Members….. Coral Brown Every so often, one of our fabulous guild members will be featured so we can get to know each other. Our first member is Coral Brown. Coral Brown is an active guild member having helped out with philanthropic efforts and the quilt show. She currently is our Friendship Circle Chairwoman, runs the fat quarter drawings each month, and is helping plan the holiday party. Coral started out life as an Air Force “brat” until the age of eight. She has 1 sister and 3 brothers, and her parents are still enjoying life. After her father ended his Air Force career, Coral’s family lived in various places in Southern California with each move bringing them closer to the desert. In 1973, she arrived in the Antelope Valley and started her junior year at Antelope Valley High School. Coral married the love of her life and high school sweetheart in 1976. They have enjoyed 39 years of marriage. They were blessed with two sons and are currently the proud grandparents of two beautiful granddaughters, ages 7 and 5. Besides her quilting interests, Coral enjoys reading and crocheting. She is a member of the AV Blanketeers, who focus their efforts at making hand-made blankets, scarfs, hats, etc. for people in need. Coral’s grandmother influenced Coral’s interest in quilting. Her grandmother was an old fashioned applique hand quilter, and all of her quilts were completely made by hand. Coral had a quilt top that she needed to assemble and quilt so she came to the quilt guild to seek help. By doing so, she found out that many modern day quilters are machine quilters and that inspired her to finish her quilt by machine and got her hooked on machine quilting. She has since found many outlets for her passion and quilting energy. Anyone who has worked with Coral on charity products can testify to her selflessness and productivity – she is a quilter that we can all aspire to emulate. Coral is a member of two different Prayers for Squares groups. She makes quilts for AV Quilts for Kids along with contributing to the AVQA’s Philanthropic efforts. When asked what her best tip would be for a new quilter, Coral enthusiastically said I would tell new quilters not to let anything stop you from learning. She said she was always intimidated by the more intricate tops but when she tackled them, she found that they are really not that difficult. She has recently taken classes offered through the guild and has had wonderful times at the classes learning techniques that she never thought she could do. Her future plans are modest. She wants to keep on learning as much as she can and wants to learn how to free motion quilt. Coral’s parting words for the interview is to never let anyone intimidate you to not keep moving forward in your quest in the perfect quilt. There is nothing like completing the perfect project. Thank you Coral! 4 NEW QUILT CHALLENGE FOR 2016 SEWING CHATELAINE Something new and something fun to sew. We have had a great guild challenge each year at AVQA with dedicated leaders. Our past leader could not continue again. This time, we will try something new and practical to make. There will still be judging. There will still be prizes. It is a sewing chatelaine to wear around your neck or waist to hold your important take along sewing tools. Sample and instructions will be at the September guild meeting. The guild logo and your name will be embroidered on a 4” space for you to embellish. Please bring $5 and print your name at the next guild meeting. The $5 (please bring cash) donation will pay for the individual machine embroidery of the AVQA logo as well as your name. The finished products will be given to you at the October meeting. If you cannot come to the September meeting, please call Mary Brewer or Debbie Cowles to sign up – be sure to provide the correct spelling of your name. I hope everyone will join in and support us. - Mary Brewer, Challenge Chairperson PROGRAM SCHEDULE 2015 – 2016 September 10, 2015 September 12, 2015 October 8, 2015 October 9-11, 2015 November 12, December 10, 2015 January 14, 2016 January 16, 2016 February 11, 2016 February 13, 2016 March 10, 2016 March 12, 2016 April 14, 2016 April 16, 2016 May 12, 2016 May 21-22, 2016 June 9, 2016 June 11, 2016 Fabric Strip Poker Class: Sue Jacobsen - How to Make a Used Jeans Quilt Speaker: Dawna Harrison Fall Retreat Quilter’s College Holiday Party Speaker: Wendy Mathson - Scrap Management Class: Wendy Mathson - Storm at Sea Speaker: Anna Koelewyn - Trunk Show Class: Anna Koelewyn - TBD Speaker: Lujean Seagal - Beyond Boring Borders Class: Lujean Seagal Speaker: Nadine Kirk: Reverse Applique Extravaganza Class: Nadine Kirk: Machine Reverse Applique Quilt Show Prep Quilt Show Speaker: Larene Smith Class: Larene Smith 5 Treasurer’s Report Treasurer's Report August 2015 Beginning Balance Checkbook Balance $11,562.27 Expenses SCCQG/Insurance (4156) Breegan & Brett/Toyota (4158) LUMC (4157) V.
