• Evening dining is by reservation. Lunch is first
come, first served in Bluefish.
• Jackets are required for gentlemen
Wednesday - Saturday evenings and Sunday
Brunch in the Catesby Dining Room. Jackets
are not required on Tuesday evenings or on
special themed events. Ladies are required to
dress in a fashion that is compatible with that
of the gentlemen.
• No short pants or jeans allowed in the Catesby
Dining Room.
• Gentlemen may not wear hats or caps in the
Clubhouse.
• Shirts and shoes are required at all times on
Club premises, except around the swimming
pool. Bathing attire not permitted within the
Clubhouse.
• SCYC is a family-oriented club that
appreciates well behaved children, but they
should be supervised at all times.
• Smoking is not permitted inside the SCYC
Clubhouse.
• Boaters must notify the Club if planning to
arrive by boat to ensure dockage.
• When a cancellation policy applies, the Club
must be notified of cancellation within the
time specified so that charges to your account
may be avoided.
• While in the Clubhouse, cell phones should be
turned off or kept on silent/ vibrate. Members
who find it necessary to use cell phones while
dining are asked to step into the foyer or
outside.

Club Activity Report

As the season changes here at the
Club, I am excited to see all that is
happening every day. We have enjoyed great events and progress over
the past month with the Legacy
League Family Ball, Club Commissioning, Harbor 20 racing, Pool
Bar construction and the continued growth of club activities for the
membership.
This month, we are looking forward to the new Spring menus from
Chef Kevin and his culinary team,
Easter Brunch, Heritage festivities,
the Windmill Harbour Regatta (and
DDS&A cup), and the Boat Show
the first weekend of May. Easter
brunch this year will be highlighted by the club's egg hunt at 1:00
pm, with designated age appropriate areas for the children. Quickly
following Easter, the Heritage golf
tournament begins, and the club's
hospitality vessel will again be
parked in the Harbour Town Yacht
Basin, this year in slip #11. The vessel, a Haig Point Ferry, will be open
to all members Friday from 12-5:00
pm, Saturday from 11-6:00pm and
Sunday from 12–6:00pm. We will
be featuring refreshments and hors
d’oeuvres from both clubs. At
the end of the month, the Windmill Harbour Regatta, featuring
the DDS&A cup, will include both
Harbor 20’s and other One Design
fleets, thus building upon a great
event. I invite you to join and watch
some great One Design sailing from
your club members.
COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

Thank you to all the attendees of the Club Commissioning
and the first Boat Commissioning of 2015. I am looking forward
to this new boating season. The
warm air and longer days are here,
so it’s time to get on the water! I
would like to thank John Rumsey
for inviting my daughter, Blythe,
to sail with the Harbor 20 Group.
This was Blythe’s first time sailing
and she loved it. In my defense,
I have asked her numerous times
if she would like to go sailing...
the answer to me has always been
a resounding, NO! I am not sure
if this answer is due to my sailing ability or the fact that I am her
father. I am going with the later.
On a side note, I would also like to
thank the sailor who taught Blythe
a few choice words. I let her know
these words are only to be used on
the water, under very specific racing conditions.
The PHRF Series is underway. Participation in the series
is up, due to the efforts of Judith
and Bill Lawrenson. We have ten
boats registered. The first race in
this series was a two hour float.
Unfortunately, the wind did not

Head boating community for a great
weekend of boats and food.
Finally, the pool bar and pool area
remodel is well underway. The construction has begun and looks to be
on schedule. New furnishings have
been purchased and ordered, and the

Our Legacy League Ball was
held on March 21st. We presented
eight cotillion graduates and introduced two young ladies, Allie
Burak and Whitaker Gannon. A
great time was had by all! If you
have children who have never attended Cotillion or this event, I
cannot express enough how much
fun the children (and parents/
grandparents) of the club had on
this evening. The champagne and
sparkling grape juice were flowing and families were dancing
until dawn... OK, only to 10:30.
This truly is one of the best family
events at our club!

their entrance to introduce seniors Allie Burak and Whitaker Gannon. Family and friends then gathered for a

The boat show takes place on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May
3 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., advance admission is $12 per person online
with children 12 and under free; at the gate $15 per person. Free
parking is available in several locations throughout the Windmill
Harbour neighborhood, with free trolley shuttle service to the
Windmill Harbourmaster ’s office. Entry to the show is not permitted
by boat and the show takes place rain or shine. The prestigious
South Carolina Yacht Club will be open to the public for dining,
tours of the clubhouse and facilities. The South Carolina Yacht
Club Grill will also have a special Boat Show menu for attendees
available from 11 am – 3 pm. Tickets and additional information
on the Hilton Head Island Boat Show and Taste of the Harbour

• Heritage Officials are supportive and will notify CBS of the event and background details, so hopefully

• Members wishing to go in the parade who do not have boats mention so at signup time - will be

OPTIMIST RACE TEAM
The weather is starting to get nice
and the Opti sailors are getting ready
for the spring. We have had four to 8
sailors on Saturday mornings and will
continue to offer Saturday sailing to
anyone who would like to participate.
We would like to get anyone on the
water and participating with the
team. As the weather continues to
get nicer we will encourage all levels
of Opti sailors to join us on the water
from 10-2.
SCYC SUMMER JR. SAILING
Registration for the Jr. Sailing
summer programs has begun. This
summer, the South Carolina Yacht
club will offer full day, week long
sailing junior sailing along with the
new Optimist development team and
Optimist Race Team options. We
will also be offering 420 sailing for
the older sailors as SCYC have taken
possession of five 420s to be used to
train future Hilton Head Prep race
team members as well as recreational
cruisers ages 14-17. If you are
interested in any of the programs
that we offer and have questions
please contact Mark Newman to
register. Space is limited so please
get your sailors registered early.

Well, we have the prizes (Brag
Flags), the courses, and ten boats
registered for the event this year. Yes
we now match the size of the Harbor
20 fleet, including one renegade
H-20 who is sailing with us! This is a
great news, but the first two races of
the series are severely challenged by
weather conditions. We were unable
to start the first race due to the wind
being two to three knots, and all
boats going backward against the tide
as they tried for the start line. On a
positive note, the day was mid-70's
and with no wind. It was beautiful to
float around out there, and the after
party was well attended and a lot of
fun. The second race had to contend
with massive Equinox tides and a low
at the lock of minus 1.4 at 5:00 PM
leaving about three feet of water. We
had to start and finish early that day.
We have two boats from the Yacht
Club of Hilton Head Island registered
and one non-club member from
Windmill Harbour participating
with the seven club members' boats.
We range from 20 ft. to 42 ft. in
length, and race pursuit style, so the
slowest starts first, the fastest last,
and whomever get to the finish first
is the winner. Somewhat like run
rabbit run - if you played that game

week.

month, so Autumn Voyager, our 42
ft sloop, is excited about taking our
"usual suspects," or any member
of the club who would like to learn
more about sailing, or those who
would just like a day on the water.
Making sure that we have cleared
Easter week and Heritage week, we
have scheduled the dates later in
the month. So join us on Monday,
April 20 or Thursday, April 23.
Because of the tides on Monday
the 20th, please note that we must
leave earlier than usual. Departure
time on that date only will be 9:30
am, returning around 2:30 pm. On
Thursday April 23, we will depart
the SCYC dock at our usual time of
10:15 am, returning before 3:30 pm.
We can't wait to get your phone
calls for reservations from our
seasoned crew as well as any other
SCYC members who would like

FLEET HAPPENINGS

JR Richardson presented an
interesting
program
on
the
development of Windmill Harbour
and the South Carolina Yacht Club
for the March meeting of the Cruise
Fleet. In conclusion, JR recognized
the hours of hard work put into
the Marina by David Pierce. He
presented Dave with a special
print of the Guy Buffet painting
that hangs over the fireplace in the
Trophy Room.
Then, on a rainy, foggy afternoon,
seven boats arrived in Harbour
Town for the Cruise Fleet's first
trip of the season. Some enjoyed
the Wine Festival taking place in
Harbour Town. The focus of the
trip, however, was our dinner Friday
evening at Haig Point. Everyone
boarded the ferry and then a van to
enjoy a most delicious dinner at Haig
Point. Bill McGrath and Bob Polsen
were responsible for planning a good
trip.

M
aking quality wine in
Europe is all about following the
rules, many of which are about
location, location, location! This
month, we pushed our rebellious
American attitude to the max and
tasting wines created by innovative
winemaker David Phinney, of Orin
Swift fame. He turns the European
paradigm on its head with his
Locations series.
After great success creating
unusual blends in California, he
headed to the Old World to try his
luck. To critical and popular acclaim,
his Locations wines mix-and-match
diverse grapes from many different
regions, in complete defiance of the
Appellation system that dominates
European winemaking.
We assessed Locations wines
representing France, Spain and
Italy. Not only are these delicious,
the prices are extraordinarily
reasonable.

from famous Spanish growing
regions like the Priorat and Rioja.

Phinney has not forgotten his

blend,is simply stunning. If you like
Napa Valley wines, this crimson
red butterfly will make your heart
flutter! It turns out that Phinney
can apparently also follow the rules
to great success.
