To find out more about the programme visit www.germany-and-india.com DAILY PROGRAMME DAILY EVENTS DAILY EVENTS Culture/Art Witness to Change: Photography is a powerful medium that has the ability to overcome barriers faced by both language and geography. Witness To Change explores the way in which images have been used to capture the way in which spaces change, grow and develop, with a focus on changing city spaces. City spaces transform at an extraordinary speed. The main question in mind with the selection of images that are being exhibited is to explore how much the changing city affects our identity as a community or as citizens of the city. Explorations of Space in Photographs Exhibition Images have been selected from an independent publication and exhibition in Germany called Ein Tag Deutschland (One Day in Germany), and also from photographers who have contributed to PIX: A Photography Quarterly over the last year. The images aim to create a sense of unity and interconnectedness as well as contrast between photography in both Germany and India. Legend tells of a piper dressed in pied clothing who was hired by a small village plagued with rats to get rid of the vermin using a magical flute. After leading the rats with his enchanted flute, the villagers refused to pay the piper, prompting him to play his flute leading all their children away. Centre Stage | 10.30am Students from the Nehru Word School will perform the play ‘Der Rattenfänger von Hameln’ with a cast of over 100 actors, dancers, narrators and musicians. The hour long play will transport the audience back to the medieval ages to observe the legend of the piper. This will be followed by a fusion dance bringing us back to the present day, performed by a dance group from one of Delhi’s Kendriya Vidayala Schools. Performance Public Event THURSDAY | NOVEMBER 1 Culture/Dance Culture/Theatre Ye Hum Kyun Sahen? (Why should we tolerate?) Performance Square | 3pm Public Event A street play based on the personal narratives of industrial workers in and around Delhi. Before making the play the actors met and interviewed many workers, trade union activists working in factories. The short introductory scene focuses on the abysmal conditions of the unorganized sector. The rest of the play is an interplay of farce and docu-drama on the work conditions, wage issues, hours of work, contract labour, muster roll, attitude of the capitalist, rights of the workers, etc. There is a very symbolic representation and creative use of a thick rope and body movements that runs as a strong visual action in the documentary scenes. The two farcical scenes have the capitalist (old and new, played by the same actor) interacting with the counter-chorus who egg him on. Their partisanship with the struggle of the workers subtly build up to the verse at the end. 21 THURSDAY | NOVEMBER 1st 2012 THURSDAY | NOVEMBER 1 Culture/Literature Hold The Novel: Hidden City Hold The Novel is an event that aims to place the spotlight on original, new writing in India in genres other than the novel through a series of readings. Festival of Contemporary Dance Square | 7pm Public Event www.ignitedancefestival.com Deepak Kurki Shivaswamy’s 20-minute movement installation ‘UnderContraction’ depicts the intricate, confused and rapid urbanisation of the city. The piece vividly captures the mad need to build, demolish and re-imagine the city, exploring how people, workers and individuals are caught in this mayhem; a maze of bricks, bridges, construction sites and dust. Dancers interact with the architectural structure of different urban spaces using air masks, construction helmets and newspapers to create images of a city under construction. UnderContraction aims to create moving images with bodies that reflect the current imagination of the city and the challenging landscape of a developing city. Festival of Contemporary Dance Cultural Pavilion | 7.30pm Public Event www.ignitedancefestival.com A collaborative dance piece created by German dancer and choreographer Felix Bürkle and Indian dancer Hema Sundari Vellaluru during a six month residency in Mumbai. Starting Point #3 begins with the encounter of two people, a real encounter in a given space that just happens to be a stage, a public space. Based on improvisation, the dancers create movement as a means of communication. The emotional state that they find each other in has a direct influence on their movement. The performance highlights moments of intimacy, of struggle, being accepted, being repelled, being protected, being exposed. Starting Point #3 explores the duality of two beings that meet each other and are confronted with the fact that they are different although they share something in common. The performance is an open process that gives space to the unexpected in an atmosphere that is strong yet fragile, intimate and vulnerable. © Oliver Look FRIDAY | NOVEMBER 2nd 2012 The Ska Vengers The Ska Vengers is a new Delhi based band who blend ska rhythms with elements of dub, punk, jazz and rap to come up with a form of music that is refreshingly different, energetic and highly danceable. The event was picked up by international media and covered extensively in The New York Times, BBC World Service, China Post, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Arab News and many others.
