In the time I have been here there have been two lots of a lone gunman killing a lot of people for no apparent reason. In some States they are now going to let students carry guns to school! I have spoken to quite a few people about the right to carry guns and there seems to be a ground swell of opinion that the law is outdated. Let us hope that it is and we don't see any more shootings. One of the groups that I was impressed by over here is the The Red Tail Project. They have decided to honour the group of African American fighter pilots who fought in World War II. It has taken a while but luckily there are a few still alive to be honoured. I bought the Red Tails CD so one night I will show it. Look forward to seeing you all this Thursday. Happy Flying Cyril SAANZ Auckland Sport Aviator August 2012 4 From The Editor Hi Everyone The past month has seen the hosting of the annual EAA AirVenture event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with the usual spectacular array of events and aircraft being presented WRDWWHQGHH¶V%RWK&\ULO:ULJKWDQG3DXO Blackmore attended again this year and Paul has promised to put together an article for an upcoming newsletter. While not being able to attend Oshkosh, I did manage to get to visit both the RNZAF Museum at Wigram and the Ashburton Aviation Museum this past month. This was made possible after a recent change in contract has seen me take up a role working in Christchurch which meant I spend the first three weeks of August working in the city. For those who have not recently been to the Wigram Museum, I can heartily recommend it and also recommend taking the behind the scenes tour of the restoration and storage hangars. The museum is currently in the process of significantly increasing its display area by building two large display hangars adjacent to the existing facility. Funding for these buildings was secured via a grant from the Christchurch Museum on the understanding that some of the new space will be utilised as storage by the Christchurch Museum for the next few years while that facility undergoes significant reconstruction. The RNXAF museum considered this a small price to pay for the opportunity to expand its existing display area. Work is rapidly progressing on the new facility and this will be an amazing addition to the museum once complete. SAANZ Auckland My visit to the Ashburton Aviation Museum was the first I have made to this facility and I have to say I came away absolutely amazed by what the all volunteer staff have achieved. The new display hangar with its amazing collection of ex-RNZAF jet aircraft is quite simply amazing. The restoration of the older De- Havilland jets is extremely good and if you are intending to go to Ashburton for next years SAA SportAvex Fly-in then this facility will be an absolute magnet to everyone who attends. Of course the big news of the moment for warbird aficionados is the imminent role out of the De Havilland Mosquito at Ardmore. I have received numerous emails in my inbox reporting on the progress of this project and like most folks I am eagerly anticipating the launch. I was fortunate enough to be out at Ardmore this weekend just gone and wandered over to the hangar after a flight in JQP and could only look on in admiration at the incredible work the Avspecs guys are doing. The Mossie, now in her wartime paint job is looking very much the part. I have included links to a couple of good sites with some great photos of the aircraft in the newsletter. I hope you enjoy the newsletter. East Auck location preferred. Unfortunately the guy I used to know has UHWLUHGDQGVKXWXSVKRS´ John Farmer replied with the following contact details and I thought it worthwhile including here for future reference. ³, YHNQRZQPeter O'Gara for many years both as an ARMAC member and machine shop proprietor. His one man business is called 'The Little Job Shop' and situated at - Unit 6/29 Neil Park Drive, East Tamaki. Ph 265 2696, Mobile 027 366 7889. I appear to have misplaced my notebook with list of addresses/places to obtain aircraft materials. Some years ago the club gave out a list of suppliers where things could be obtained or made. Any chance you would have this LQIRUPDWLRQ"´ I had a hunt round through my email archives and found the following Google Doc link provided by Mike Paauwe and the link still works. I would like to update this list in the not too distant future so if anyone has contacts they would like to add please forward them on. Auckland Chapter Suppliers list Google Doc Link: 'DYLG:LONLQVRQ¶V59-8 By Bob Keith Had a look at David Wilkinson¶s RV8 at the week end. Quite a different spar construction to the RV6 I am familiar with. This one has a .063 U shaped section which forms the spar web and top and bottom flanges. Extra strength is added progressively toward the inboard end by a flat web doubler probably about .125 ins (guessing) and then machined stepped solid sections for the inboard end which are drilled for wing attachment. Don't know how much pressure would be required to form the flanges on material of that thickness but imagine it would be considerable. Nev is assisting with flight testing of this aircraft which is proving somewhat challenging due to the angle of attack at which maximum lift is generated being within two degrees of the stall angle of attack. The aircraft is being tested at RNZAF Base Whenuapai and Nev forwarded me the photo of the flyer which graces the front cover of this month¶s newsletter. For members wishing to find out more about the project please go to the web site www.willitflymovie.com to see more details and to the Facebook site where there are significantly more photos. Hi all, I am going to sell my property at Whananaki. I will hold another fly-in when we get a good spell of weather so you guys can view it. A lot of you have been to previous fly-ins there in the past. Anyone interested please call me 0276988002 4807223. Cheers Gary Mitchell $QGIURP-RQ)DUPHU« Hi Gavin, Just checking that you received Garry Mitchell's email re sale of his Whananaki property. For those who have not been there, it consists of a 'semi permanent trailer home' with living room/kitchen, master bedroom and bunk room, covered deck. Plumbing is to a high tech septic tank in about quarter acre flat section. The farm gate opens onto the road dead opposite the farm gate that opens on to the airstrip. It is 10 minutes walk to the general store and about 30 minutes will take you across the longest foot bridge in the S. Hemisphere to one of the most pristine, 'have it to yourself' type beaches in NZ. http://www.facebook.com/pages/WILL-It-FLY- /250000028348245 M E M B E R N E W S Chris Groves By Gavin Magill Members who attended last months meeting were somewhat taken aback at the news from Chris Groves that he has been diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and will be undergoing treatment in the coming months. Don Wilkinson rightly pointed out after the meeting that as a group we were somewhat off pace last month in not recognising Chris for the great job he does with the tea and bikkies and asked that I make mention of this in the newsletter this month and wish Chris well for his treatment. I emailed Chris yesterday and received a note back from him saying he has received he first lot of Chemotherapy this week and is so far feeling ok. He hopes he remains feeling well and intends coming to this months meeting if he feels up to it. I am sure all members would join me in wishing Chris all the best for a successful outcome from his treatment. SAANZ Auckland N E W S Whananaki is about 10km N. of Tutukaka and about 25km North of Whangarei. Regards, Jon. O T H E R C H A P T E R N E W S Black Sands Fly-In 2012 By Bruce Cooke During the month I received a copy of the Waikato Thames Valley Chapter newsletter from Bruce Cooke and attached to the newsletter was the Promotional flyer for this years Black Sands Fly-In I have attached a copy of the flyer to back of this newsletter so any members wishing to attend this year¶s event can get the details from the flyer. As always this event promises to be an excellent beginning to the summer flying program although lets hope this year is somewhat less eventful than last year. Sport Aviator August 2012 7 Last Meeting Summary L A S T M E E T I N G S U M M A R Y Chris Groves Project Updates Chris Groves spoke to the meeting and advised that he will need assistance with preparing tea and coffee in the coming months as he will be receiving treatment for lymphoma cancer with which he has just been diagnosed. Gary Briggs brought in the completed vertical stabiliser kit of his Sonex. Gary advised he will be scratch building the remainder of the aircraft. Gary indicated is currently looking to build, buy or borrow a Bending Brake that will cope with 8-9 foot lengths of Aluminium required for the build. National Exec Meeting Alistair McLachlan gave an update on the progress on the hovercraft build. He advised the engine mount is now complete and that the engine is a 25hp model not 40hp as reported in last months newsletter. Evan Wheeler reported that he had just returned from the National Executive Meeting and can confirm that the SAA Flying for 2013 will be held at Ashburton on the weekend following Waitangi Day. Nev Hay advised that he is assisting with flight testing of the reproduction Pearse Flyer built by Ivan Mudrovcich. Nev reported the aircraft is somewhat unstable, creating maximum lift at just 2 degree's from full stall AOA. The aircraft is currently mounted on a trailer and being driven around Whenuapai with load cells attached. Chris Wade is also assisting Nev. He also reported that the SportAvex fly-in for 2014 will be held at Bridge Pa airfield in Hastings after they expressed a keen interest in hosting the event. The Tauranga Air-Show/fly-in will still be open to the SAA but it will not be the SportAvex gathering. Evan also reported that SAA has made submissions to the CAA on the new Part 139 rules plus the proposed Airways Fee's. David Wilkinson reported the Horizontal and Vertical Stabilisers of his RV-8 are now complete with the rudder about 50% complete. The wings have been shipped from the US and the fuselage should be shipped by the end of August. Norm Bartlett Norm Bartlett then presented a brief talk on a new model aircraft he has purchased called a Slow Bipe. The ultra light weight model weighs just 380gm and Norm purchased it for US$109.00 plus US$30.00 freight. He says it extremely easy to fly and virtually stall proof. Liviu Filimon reported that he is currently rebuilding a classic P8 compass and is looking for parts for the rebuild. In particular he is trying to find bellows for the compass as the existing one is cracked. Guest Speaker With no further business Brian Wigley presented a history of his family running various tourist ventures in the South Island over the past hundred plus years. Most notably this included the Hermitage Hotel and the establishment of Mount Cook Airlines. Brian¶V talk was not limited to just these two ventures however but covered the many other business ventures his father, grandfather and great grandfather had dabbled in over the years. These included the ski-plane services offered for much of the post war years. This was a most enjoyable presentation of Brian¶s family history presented in Brian¶s usual enigmatic style. Popemobile Update Gordon Sanders wished to advise he is currently looking for a new home for the SAA Popemobile as it has been moved out of the Warbirds hangar at Ardmore to make way for the A4 Skyhawk static display. Anyone who has out of the weather storage should contact Gordon as soon as possible. MOTAT Site Possibility Quashed Gordon Sanders reported news of MOTAT being potentially able to accommodate a 12m x 12m building for ARMAC / SAA was premature. This space is not going to be available to either ARMAC or SAA.
