LÄNNEN RALLIES WITH THE WRC Lännen Tractors has concluded a sponsorship agreement with Jari-Matti Latvala and his co-driver Miikka Anttila who participate in the WRC rally series with Ford Fiesta RS WRC. Within the framework of the agreement, Jari-Matti and Miikka have been visiting events organised by Lännen Tractors, achieving greater prominence for Lännen all over the world through the media that is reporting about the competitions. Team Ford’s line-up did, however, change for the season 2012. JariMatti’s team mate Mikko Hirvonen was replaced by Petter Solberg of Norway. But in contrast to expectations, the races did not go as planned in the spring. Mishaps early in the season including the fracture of Jari-Matti’s clavicle, took their toll as lost points. It appears that the dream of a world championship must be postponed to next season. Some rays of light this season have been the victory in the Swedish Rally in February and making the podium in Greece in May, and most recently, in the home competition in Jyväskylä in early August. The final battle for victory in individual competitions still continues during the end of the season, but the duo’s main objective is to improve the balance of their performance. The world championship points can still be gained this season in the following rallies Rally of Germany from 24 to 26.8. Rally GB in the UK from 13 to 16.9. Rally of France from 4 to 7.10. Rally of Italy from 18 to 21.10. Rally of Spain from 8 to 11.11. Jari-Matti and Miikka have a contract with Ford until the end of 2012. The near future will show, whether this contract will be extended or will there be major changes for the year to come. No matter which team they are driving in, this duo has a strong position when it comes to winning the world championship in the near future. NEW APPOINTMENTS The service team of Lännen Tractors Oy was strengthened at the beginning of August, when Markku Vähätalo (45 years) from Loimaa was appointed as service instructor. Markku has previously worked, for example, as a workshop foreman at Daetek Oy (Doosan, Bobcat) in Turku, and as mechanic at Raskone Oy. Markku Vähätalo Tel. +358 50 441 3326 markku.vahatalo@lannentractors.fi LÄNNEN NEW S - C U S T O M E R M A G A Z I N E 2 0 1 2 3 lännen launches new machines At MaskinExpo in Stockholm, Lännen Tractors expanded its range of products by introducing new wheel loader backhoes that are stronger and more economical than their predecessors. The finnish Lännen Tractors Oy launched two new Lännen wheel loader backhoes. The new products are the highly economical Lännen 8800i, and the Lännen 8600G Premium that is designed for even more diverse and demanding jobs. The new models introduced the first time at MaskinExpo in Stockholm, on May 2012. Lännen 8800i The Lännen 8800i is the most economical wheel loader backhoe on the market. The output of the 4.9-litre fourcylinder diesel engine, which meets class 3B emission requirements, is 118 kW at 2,100 r.p.m. Compared with the previous model, the torque of the engine has increased and is now 708 Nm at 1,500 r.p.m. The fuel consumption of this new model is, however, up to10 per cent less than that of the corresponding previous models and far less than of the corresponding competitors. Overall, the engine has a very high efficiency and a good thermal balance, says Mr Jan Aspvik, the product group manager at Lännen Tractors Oy. – Compared with the previous Lännen 8800G model, other improvements are: the new frame concept, the wheelbase lengthened by ten cent, the oscillation of the center joint and the redimensioned operating hydraulics. The new construction of the articulated joint improves productivity, in particular during front loader operations. The steering angle of the articulated joint of this agile and strong machine is 42 degrees and the length of the oscillation trajectory is almost + / - 400 mm. 4 The Lännen 8800i is the strongest wheel loader backhoe on the market. Lännen 8600G Premium The other new model that introduced at MaskinExpo, the Lännen 8600G Premium, is stronger and faster, and reaches farther than preceding models of the Lännen 8600-series. Its new features include, for example, the new gearbox and drive train as well as better designed operating hydraulics. – The new type of gearbox enables the gears to be maneuvered during driving, which makes the new Lännen 8600G Premium quicker and even more agile while working or travelling on the road. In addition, the drive system’s improved transmission ratio means that the driving speed is now easier to control in a variety of work situations. Furthermore, the pump for operating the hydraulics is larger than before, enabling greater output and faster movements. And thanks to electric pilot control of the operating hydraulics, the speed adjustments of the work movements – including the backhoe and front loader – are easy to save in four different memory locations. – The structure of the loader arms has been reinforced and stiffened. The front loader’s outreach and force have also been increased. And thanks to large 580/65 34” wheels, the Lännen 8600G Premium wheel loader backhoe’s ground clearance has been increased, which means an improved ability to proceed in difficult terrain. The Lännen 8600G Premium challenges even its bigger rivals, Mr Jan Aspvik says. During the past year Lännen Tractors has commissioned two special machines for rail and access platform works for VR Track Oy. The machines are stationed at the Tampere subsidiary of VR Track. Before the presentation of these special purpose machines, a few words about the client: VR Track Oy, a member of the VR Group, specialises in providing intelligent and demanding systems for infrastructure construction and, in particular, planning, building and maintenance services within the maintenance of tracks. VR Track is the largest builder of railways in Finland and one of the largest construction companies and engineering consultancies. The 6 company employs 2,300 people and at present turns over EUR 314 million. – The basic units of these multipurpose machines, specifically designed for VR Track, are powerful and strongly built Lännen 8800G Wheel Loader Backhoes. The machines are equipped with versatile work attachments, such as, for example, rail-wheel units of a new type. The special design of the rail wheels allows the rubber tyres of the machine to be easily raised about twenty centimetres above the rails to overcome humps and rail brakes at the descents, says Jan Aspvik, the product group manager at Lännen Tractors. A totally new work method The first machine was designed in close and good cooperation between VR Track and Lännen Tractors that lasted several months. The design was based on VR’s track construction guidelines of several tens of pages including numerous safety regulations. The first tests were carried out in spring 2010 at the Lännen Tractors plant in the own twenty-metres long track of the factory, and the other tests were carried out at the railyard of VR in Loimaa, near by the factory. – We have here been able to introduce a totally new work method. In Finland, the use of the Wheel Loader Backhoe on rails is not that typical in contrast to LÄNNEN NEW S - C U S T O M E R M A G A Z I N E 2 0 1 2 Sweden and Norway. In the last but one year we designed and supplied a rail-road machine to the port of Hamina, and now we have gained a good start with VR. Our expectations are high; the wheel loader backhoe is a very useful tool in Nordic conditions, also for working on tracks, says Mr. Aspvik. Also at the VR Track side, people are contended with the new machines, and the new way of cooperation. – The cooperation in the design phase was also a success. Thanks to the versatility of the machine, the experience from the first machine is very positive. One machine can do the work of several machines within the maintenance of tracks and the surrounding areas. The machine has been used for replacing sleepers, flail cutting, digging trenches, loading operations, and access platform works within construction of electrified tracks, says Risto Röman, the head of maintenance area 3 at VR Track Oy. – The machine is used for ploughing snow and grooming of switches on the track – on the service roads, in the station areas and, in particular, in the busy track sections. The machine is able to travel quickly, either by a service road or a public road, from one traffic place to another. The new, more stringent snow limits set increased demands on passing places at the traffic places, says Röman. “The Lännen 8800G is also ideal for actual construction and maintenance of the track.” Instead of this is an energy wood grapple from Nisula Forest, which, thanks to its excellent outreach, is capable of removing interfering trees even from a longer distance. If necessary, the grapple can also be used for loading operations, which increases the versatility of this specific work attachment even more. – The other machine faced tough challenges regarding the winter care and maintenance of tracks and rail yards. Among other things, the machine is equipped with a snow blower, which has the capacity to remove snow also from the railyards and from between the rail pairs. As required, the dipper-stick can be fitted with an efficient brush for cleaning the switches and between the rails. Moreover, the loader of the machine will be equipped with a brush unit for cleaning away snow. The machine also has a compressed air system with high output for efficient cleaning of switches and tracks. – One of the pieces of special equipment in the new machine is a high-pressure washer for cleaning the switches and tracks. Coppice can be controlled by means of the pump unit and the nozzle bars to be connected to the machine. Several work attachments have been provided for clearing coppice, such as the pruning shears and the flail cutter, Mr. Aspvik lists. Effectively and safely – I believe that the new machine will cope very well with removal of snow in winter and cutting coppice. The strengths of the second machine also include its readiness for using the energy-wood harvester and grapple on the upper boom, which enables the harvesting of storm-felled trees in many different ways. The multi-purpose trailer, which can be hitched to the machine, facilitates the removal of snow, coppice or trees from the side of the track along the track or the service road, says Risto Röman from VR Track. – The auxiliary hydraulic circuit of the new machine makes for more efficient braking of the road wheels and rail wheels. The backhoe of the multifunction machine can be used for replacing sleepers and, after switching it to a separate supporting head, for supporting the sleepers. The same machine can also be used for brushing the macadam or gravel support layer using the rubber stick brush to be attached to the front end of the machine, says Mr. Röman, listing some of the versatile features of the second machine. According to the product group manager of Lännen Tractors, Mr. Jan Aspvik, the Lännen 8800G is also ideal for actual construction and maintenance of the track. – Thanks to the good cooperation between the parties, these multipurpose machines can be used for a wide range of different jobs in an effective, user-friendly, controlled and safe way, stresses Mr. Aspvik. Lännen Wheel Loader Backhoes Lännen Wheel Loader Backhoes are strong, fast and versatile machines with excellent off-road properties for different challenging operations. Challenging proposals – The cooperation with VR Track has continued fruitfully after the commissioning of the first machine, and the work attachment applications have been developed further. We have received new, challenging proposals from the customer, and implemented these as best we can, says Jan Aspvik. The “new, challenging proposals by customers” mentioned by Aspvik, have caused some major changes in the second machine. The first machine was equipped with an access platform, which enables safe working to a height of 19 metres. Even the new machine is equipped with a similar lifting boom, but no platform. These machines combine a versatile wheeled loader with an efficient backhoe. The Lännen Wheel Loader Backhoes are multi-function machines for infrastructure construction and environmental engineering. They are ideal for municipal public works such as the building of heat, water and electricity networks, and for the construction and maintenance of railway networks. There are three basic models: 8800G, 8600G, and 8600Ge. Lännen Tractors Oy has launched two new Lännen wheel loader backhoes. The new products are the highly economical Lännen 8800i, and the Lännen 8600G Premium that is designed for even more diverse and demanding jobs. LÄNNEN NEW S - C U S T O M E R M A G A Z I N E 2 0 1 2 7 The toughest work environment imaginable: Lundberg 6200 performs! It smokes and sizzles. Slowly but surely the black liquid reaches the operating temperature of 70 degrees. The Lundberg 6200 for applying asphalt adhesive of the Swedish Skanska has only been running for a few weeks before the visit of the “Lännen News” magazine. – What an outstanding capacity. And look how flexible it is; this machine does the job of several machines, says David Peterson, the machine operator at Skanska. A steaming adhesive mass is being spread across the roadway. The Lundberg 6200 in action! The asphalt adhesive is a cumbersome product to deal with. It resembles tar. It is used for binding together the different layers of asphalt. This machine was purchased by ”Skanska i Mälardalen” and at present is being used for a large paving job outside Katrineholm, Sweden. David Peterson is heating up the adhesive as Emil Andersson, sales representative for the ”Markvårdsmaskin”, arrives. – When the weather is cold like this, the adhesive becomes extremely viscous. Then everything must be warmed up properly before we can get started, says David, as he warms up the adhesive pump using a propane torch. The ready-assembled tank was sent to the Lundberg plant in Skellefteå for mounting and fitting into place. One example of the required fitting was the modification of the radiator intake, which was dangerously close to the place where the vapours from the adhesive end up. – Therefore the fan is reversible; it takes in air from the front and blows it out from the rear. This modification was essential to enable the machine to operate in such a tough work environment, says Emil. Soon with milling equipment Reversible fan David tells us next how this machine can replace several machines: The Lundberg machine is provided with a 1100-litre tank that is located on top of the bonnet. – I can easily move the asphalt mass, remove any portion of the asphalt that has been laid in a wrong place, level out the mass etc. – The bonnet can be pulled back in the quite normal way, after 8 having first lifted up the application ramp for the adhesive, Emil explains. In addition, we have the jointing equipment that allows me to make all the required joints in the paving. This can be done simultaneously and in parallel during application of the adhesive. The machine is also fast to move from one place to the other. Thanks to the flexibility of the machine, we intend to fit it with milling equipment as well, says David. And as it so often goes, the fine hydraulic system also gets some praise: – It is just brilliant that the adhesive applicator can be operated by its own pump, independently from the engine speed. This helps save both the machine and the fuel, says David Petersén. – This is a very agile machine to drive. Besides, it has a durable chassis, mechanical construction and hydraulic system, says Emil Andersson. A steaming adhesive mass is being spread across the roadway. The Lundberg 6200 in action! LÄNNEN NEW S - C U S T O M E R M A G A Z I N E 2 0 1 2 The 5000th Lundberg from Skellefteå This year marks 35 years since the first Lundberg tool carrier was delivered from the factory in Skellefteå, North-Sweden. It was 1977 when the first 341 model was produced and delivered. Lundberg brothers began their mechanical activity in Skellefteå 1945. Lundberg Hymas AB has a long history as universal tool carrier manufacturer since 1977. In the activity, it has also made rear loader (wheel loader), backhoe loaders, motor graders and to the current product portfolio, tool carriers. Lundberg multi-purpose machine is considered as market-leading technology. The product range today includes five models in weight classes 4-7 tons. It’s worth to notice that there are almost 500 attachments available for the current machines. Today the company has an own sales organization in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Additionally, there are dealers in the Baltics and Russia. The factory is working actively to customize products in accordance with end-customer preferences and requirements in Skellefteå. The export business is growing steadily and becoming an increasingly important factor when the factory is planning for future production volumes and activities. At the same time, there exists a continuous focus to expand market share also in Sweden. Skellefteå Municipality received the 5000th Lundberg of the model Lundberg 6200Lse. In September last year at the opening of the Lännen Center in Oulu, I took the final steps to purchace a Lännen Wheel Loader Backhoe. Up until then, I had often dreamed of getting one, but was concerned that it might be slightly too large for my needs, recalls Hannu Laukkonen, a contractor from Alavus. First, I bought a JCB from year 2001. I did work with it for one and a half years. After that I bought a brand new JCB 4CX. I wasn´t quite pleased with that machine. The persistent salesman Jari Rahkonen convinced me about the wonderful features of the Lännen machine. As a result, in the autumn of 2011 I was in the process of buying a new Lännen 8600 Wheel Loader Backhoe. The order confirmation had already been presented to me twice, and was only waiting for my signature. But finally, as a result of various coincidences, I decided to purchace a larger unit, a second-hand Lännen 8800E model, says Mr. Laukkonen. The man behind those ”various coincidences” was Mr. Juha Vuoti, the owner of the Oulu-based enterprise ”Maansiirto P & J Vuoti Ky”. This seasoned entrepreneur had recently renewed his fleet and bought a brand new Lännen 8800G Wheel Loader Backhoe. The salesman involved was none other than Jari Rahkonen himself. And because Hannu Laukkonen, the man from Alavus, was an old acquaintance of his Oulubased colleague, ownership of Mr. Vuoti’s 8800E was shortly transferred to Mr. Laukkonen – with Mr Rahkonen chuckling with satisfaction in the background. I took some time to scrutinise Juha’s machine and noticed that it had been carefully looked after by a precise man. The number of operating hours was about 5,000. We concluded the deal, and finally I became a Lännen man. And I have not regretted this deal for single moment, says Hannu Laukkonen. The arms do not shake This Lännen machine belongs to a category quite different to that of my previous machine. It is a somewhat longer machine, and owing to the width of the tyres, is approximately 15 centimetres wider than the JCB 4CX. But it turns in just as narrow a space as the smaller machine. I have still not encountered any place too narrow for my Lännen machine to work well. In addition, it’s a very stable machine. The loader arms do not shake, even when being thrust into a pile of any kind of crushed stone. It’s a very stable machine whose wheels stay in contact with the ground in every situation. In all respects, Hannu Laukkonen seems to be quite satisfied with his Lännen machine. - I carry out almost all the servicing myself. But whenever I have needed servicing assistance, everything has worked out just perfectly. I have got assistance both from Seinäjoki and from Oulu. No matter how busy the service crew, they have always taken the time and scrutinised the matter and even called me back. The people from the factory have also responded to my questions willingly. And Jari Rahkonen calls me regularly as well, wanting to know how I’m doing. I have also received valuable assistance from some more experienced Lännen customers, from Juha Vuoti and many others. Asking how they have dealt with various issues has been easy, says Laukkonen of his colleagues. Inclined to workaholism But how is it, are your fingers already itching to purchase a brand new Lännen machine? Not just yet, because this machine has still only been running for about 6,200 hours. Some 10,000 hours could be a threshold. Or maybe 11,000 or maybe even 12,000 hours. But it is true that the hours accumulate quickly. Hannu Laukkonen admits being slightly inclined to workaholism. I have two permanent building companies as my clients – typically doing landscaping, yard work, and the foundations of buildings for them. This summer, the city of Alavus has also become one of my clients – digging trenches for heat distribution and water supply lines. I usually work for the construction companies and do jobs for the city from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and in the evenings and at weekends I work for other clients. Recently, the working weeks have ccasionally extended to 80 hours. It is about the maximum one man can take. In the summer one has to do as much as possible; as the winter is clearly less busy. But I try to be as versatile as possible. In winter, I also drive a forest machine whenever there is no work for my own machine. You just have to keep going – as long as your spouse allows you to, Laukkonen chuckles. High-quality second-hand machines are presented at: www.lannencenter.com/en/used-machines.html 10 LÄNNEN NEW S - C U S T O M E R M A G A Z I N E 2 0 1 2 NEW LÄNNEN 8800G POWER-LINE CONSTRUCTION MACHINE TO ESTONIA The representative of Lännen Tractors Oy in the Baltic states, Baltem AS, has delivered several Lännen 8800G Wheel Loader Backhoes to Eltel Networks AS of Estonia within a short period of time.
