when style becomes a statement
INSIDE News and information from RIMOWA No. 2/2016 when style becomes a statement … that is the slogan of the new advertisement campaign for the luxury RIMOWA Bossa Nova range. Top model Alessandra Ambrosio is the face of the campaign, once again appearing in a series of poses with the elegant suitcases. The luggage and the model are the perfect combination not only in terms of looks, but also when it comes to what’s on the inside. They are made for each other. After all, the beauty from Brazil shares her homeland with the production site of these modern polycarbonate cases. EDITORIAL Dear RIMOWA Friends, We enjoyed a positive start to the year, and things are fortunately continuing in the same vein. After claiming first place in the German SME ranking, we have now received two more awards for our PR campaigns in Singapore. We also passed an important milestone in the company’s history during the first quarter: the innovative RIMOWA Electronic Tag was officially launched! The system has already been integrated with the new version of the Lufthansa app, and the first luggage items are on sale. In other words, the future of travel has begun! I am especially pleased to present our new Bossa Nova campaign here on the front page. Some of you may have seen this in an advertisement or on an in-store poster. Following on from this, we also give you an insight into the handcrafted production of our Bossa Nova leather handles – a real visual and tactile highlight. Additionally, our global network has gained some very attractive shops in recent weeks, and it is my pleasure to share some photos from the opening events. To conclude this edition, we have another column from Cologne-based blogger Miss Everywhere. I hope you enjoy reading this issue! Dieter Morszeck RIMOWA INSIDE No. 2/2016 Development of the Bossa Nova handle At RIMOWA it has always been important to ensure that all replacement parts are of top quality. Of course, this also applies to every handle on every case. A few years ago, someone put forward the idea to cover RIMOWA handles with leather. The subsequent search for a suitable leather workshop took the team to Solingen. There, a small producer made a very good impression: well organised and with the charm of yesteryear. The workshop smelled of leather and glue. It was filled with punching tools, sewing machines and large bolts of leather in a wide range of colours. This insight into the high-quality handcrafted production process and the results it yielded were enough to convince RIMOWA CEO Dieter Morszeck. From that moment on, a variety of RIMOWA suitcase handles have come from Solingen. Double award The Bossa Nova range was developed in 2013 by RIMOWA CEO Dieter Morszeck. He was looking for an elegant yet technically sophisticated leather handle to match the corners of the same material. The greatest challenge was to integrate a fine leather material that could withstand even the toughest everyday stresses and strains while still guaranteeing the attractive appearance of the leather handle over the long term. The result is impressive! The stitching on the high-quality leather can only be produced using an old Pfaff sewing machine – a piece of equipment that is very difficult to come by. RIMOWA received bronze at Marketing magazine’s PR Award in Singapore not once, but twice. The launch campaign for the Bossa Nova range took third place in the category for best product launch PR campaign. Another outstanding result was achieved by the ‘RIMOWA x ART’ campaign, which came third in the luxury segment. The ‘RIMOWA x ART’ exhibition at the Mandarin Gallery store in Singapore displayed 12 suitcases decorated by famous artists. Six of these cases were then available for sale, with the profits going to support the Mercy Relief aid organisation Close attention to detail and the highest quality standards round off the design of the Bossa Nova suitcases. RIMOWA Electronic Tag officially launched In mid-March, the latest innovation from RIMOWA was officially launched on the market. This marks another milestone in the history of the company, which once again showed a keen sense for the future of travel. The first suitcases featuring the RIMOWA Electronic Tag are already available at retailers, and shipments to dealers and stores worldwide are happening at full speed. In a cosy lounge atmosphere, visitors could find out how the first digital solution for luggage works and what advantages it offers. New service point in Japan I am in search of paradise with my RIMOWA suitcases, far away from the mass tourism found on the bustling Bangla Road in Phuket. Situated on a hill in the south-west of the island, the Sri Panwa Hotel offers a private infinity pool and breathtaking views from luxurious private villas. It has earned a legendary reputation as a dream hotel in Phuket – and for good reason. The rooftop bar, Babanest, boasts a 360-degree panorama of the sea. It is one of the most famous rooftop bars in the world, and the trendiest place to enjoy a drink at sunset. Another special highlight in Phuket are the hidden, secluded beach coves. Freedom Beach and Paradise Beach are top insider tips – both can be reached either by following a short exotic trail or by taking a short boat ride from Patong Beach. A COLUMN BY BLOGGER MISS EVERYWHERE Also a stone’s throw away by boat from Phuket are the popular Ko Phi Phi and James Bond Islands, which are very good destinations for a day trip. I highly recommend the daily sunrise tours, where your reward for getting up early is a ‘desert island’ sensation that will make you feel like Robinson Crusoe. Avid and adventurous gourmets should visit the local Phuket weekend market. Every Saturday and Sunday evening, you can find countless Asian specialties and delicacies as well as a few daring treats such as fried frog legs or insects. ‘Why so soon?’ I finally ask myself after a few coconut drinks sipped while bathing in the sun. It is time to check out from paradise before heading back to the airport and flying home with my RIMOWA suitcases in tow. The airport is the gateway to Japan, which makes it especially popular among travellers. A RIMOWA service point was opened at the JAL ABC desk in Terminal 2, open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The reception area is painted bright white, featuring the eye-catching RIMOWA logo in blue.
