Handley and Phillip Nightingale.
England Squash have welcomed a new member of
the team to the East Midlands .....
Pete has also assisted for
the past 3 years with the
running of one of the
world’s largest PSA
events, the Virginia Open
and prides himself on being one of the fittest Masters players on the UK
circuit. He is hoping to
play in the Over-40’s as
well as the Over-35’s
competitions in 2009.
Pete Goodings has taken
over the reigns as Area Manager from Andy Hastings.
Pete joined the team in mid
July and brings with him a
breadth of knowledge & experience from the world of
squash.
Pete started playing squash
at the age of 11 in Northamptonshire – originally
starting out at Whitehills
Squash Club then moving to
Dallington. As a county junior he was always keen but
‘sports mad’ Pete struggled
to commit to the game
amongst the other sports he
played. Never-the-less he
progressed onto the men’s
scene at the age of 17.
His keen interest in fitness
and sport took him away to
join the Royal Air Force at
the age of 21. He continued
his squash playing during his
15 years active service with
the RAF, becoming the National RAF Champion, a title
Pete maintained for 4 years
- remaining undefeated for 3

years within the service. After
leaving the RAF in 2004 he
started to concentrate more
on his squash and went on to
represent England in the
Home Internationals Over-35
age group.
Amongst his competitive
squash career, Pete also finds
time to coach! He has been a
level 3 coach since 1995 and
currently trains Adrian Grant
(World Ranked no.14). He continues to work with Grant on
the mental disciplines of the
game using NLP and other psychological tools. He has also
worked with Joey Barrington,
Ritwik Battacharia, Scott
There is no doubt that
Pete has a true passion
and enthusiasm for
squash. He believes, as
an active coach and
player, that whilst remaining competitive and determined, the ‘fun’ element should never be
lost.
Pete is very excited about
meeting as many people
involved with squash and
racketball in the East Midlands as he can in the future.

World Champs 2008
Egyptian Ramy Ashour and Malaysian Nicol David were
crowned champions in the HiTec World Open Squash Championships after victories at the
first joint staging of the Men's
World Open and Women's
World Open in the UK.
This year’s event took place at
The National Squash Centre at
Sportcity in Manchester and ran
from Saturday 11th October
through to Sunday 19th October
where the prestigious finals
took place.
The World Champs is the biggest squash event in the world
and this was the first time England has hosted such an event
since 1987 and the first time
ever that the men’s and
women’s World Championships
have been run together in Britain.
With both the men’s and
women’s World Opens running
concurrently at the National
Squash Centre in Manchester’s
Sportcity, the nine day tournament saw the leading 64 men
and top 32 women in action in
what was probably the biggest
squash tournament ever
staged!
There were no less than 17 British players through to the knock
out stages, and they all gave the
home crowd plenty to cheer

about! Manchester home favourite Vicky Botwright made
it through to the womens final
disposing of 2nd seed Australia’s Rachael Grinham in the
second round and England
number one Jenny Duncalf,
who unfortunately had to retire through injury.
Spurred on by a capacity home
crowd in which she was born
and raised, England's Vicky
Botwright took the opening
game against favourite Nicol
David in the women's final but failed to prevent the world
number one from reclaiming
the title she lost last year in
Madrid.
Botwright, the 11th seed playing in her last competition before retiring to take up a position as Head Coach at the National Centre, led throughout
the opening game to take a
surprise lead.
But, after dropping her first
game of the tournament, David
raised her game in the second
to draw level after the loss of
just a single point.
The Malaysian superstar extended her lead by taking the
third. It was extremely close in
the fourth before David
clinched the match 5-11, 11-1,
11-6, 11-9 in 44 minutes to win
the world title for the third
time !
The men's event climaxed in an
all-Egyptian clash between
Ramy Ashour, the fourth seed
from Cairo who removed compatriot and defending champion Amr Shabana in the semifinals, and close friend Karim
Darwish, the No7 seed who
defeated Australia's two-time
champion David Palmer.
Both men were playing in their
first world final and Darwish
took the opening game 11-5.
However Ashour, the 21-yearold world No4 and twice winner
of the world junior title,
changed his tactics and clinched
the second game to draw level.
Ashour went on to beat Darwish 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5 in 60
minutes to become only the
second player in history (after
Pakistan legend Jansher Khan)
to win both the junior and senior world titles.

National Squash Week Update!!!
For those of you that didn’t already know, National Squash Week recently took place and squash clubs up and
down the country have been busy raising money for a good cause. National Squash Week took place from 29th
September - 5th October and money raised will go the children’s charity Whizz Kidz who supply disabled children with mobility equipment.
Eleven clubs from the East Mids took part in the event and we will bring you news of their fun and frolics and
more importantly how much money they managed to raise in the next edition of the newsletter.
Wooden Rackets Competition at Repton Squash Club
On Sunday Oct 5th Repton Squash Club done their bit for National Squash
Week by holding a Wooden Rackets Competition and Squash Quiz. Over
20 members took part in the competition. The format was to divide the
entrants into groups, with all group participants playing each other individually in matches lasting 7 minutes. The entrants were handicapped to
create a level playing field and the person in the lead after 7 minutes was
deemed the winner. At the end of all the matches the four Group Winners went through to the Semi-Finals.
A closely fought final saw Club Coach Lee Watson against Rob Flynn
with Watson claiming the match 14-12 after the 7 minutes.
Pictured are Lee Watson and
Simon Price
The Quiz was an equally tight competition and once again Watson
came out victorious after a tie-break question with Adrian Oldbury which proved to be the only way to separate the two contestants. The prize was a squash racket which was donated by England Squash.
The night was enjoyed by all the members at Repton and raised around £100 being for Whizz Kids. We would
like to thank the clubs that have participated in National Squash Week and we look forward to hearing how you
got on!
If you would like any further information about Whizz Kidz you can visit their website at
www.whizz-kidz.org.uk or call 020 7233 6600.
New Academy Gets Off the Ground in Nottinghamshire
Richard O’Connor, head coach at Nottingham Squash
Rackets Club has launched a very successful academy
based at the club with 15-20 juniors attending throughout the summer period. Young Pro players such as
Lewis Walters and Eddies Charlton who are just starting
out in their careers, were asked to be on hand to help
out and encourage these younger but just as enthusiastic players.
It is great to see people like Richard giving something
back to the game and looking to develop new initiatives.
Well done Richard and all the other coaches who assist
him at The Park – you’re a credit to the game! We look
forward to hearing
about your progress in
the future!

NSRC Start of Season Party
NSRC always celebrates the start of the squash season with a great big
party and this year was no exception. Due to the Ryder cup being
played the following week, they thought it a suitable theme, as two
teams of 15 squash players battling it out ‘loosely’ as Europe Vs USA.
Adopted player names were not strictly golf players! There were some
famous faces from both sides of the pond most notably the fancy dress
match up of Shaun Ryder Vs. Alice Cooper!
As well as featuring a dozen or so club members, there were also some
notable names from NSRC’s top quality Premier League Team including
current Irish International John Rooney and Honorary club member and
former World No. 2 Peter Marshall. Youthful exuberance got the better of experience on the night as Rooney’s greater match fitness meant
he saw off Marshall in straight games. A night of top quality squash
was had by all which eventually led to Europe demolishing USA 10
matches to 5, a result sadly not repeated in the actual Ryder Cup.
The event was a fundraiser for NSRC’s 2008 / 2009 title challenging Premier League Team which had its
first match on Tuesday 7th October. Tickets are available for home matches and U16’s go free so contact Nottingham Squash Rackets Club on 0115 941 7022 to book your seat for the countries most prestigious squash league.

Notts off to Flying Start in PSL!
While Pontefract and Probuild
Bristol top the two group tables
after the first round action in the
new season of the Premier
Squash League, there were
mixed fortunes for PSL newcomers Chapel Allerton and Devon &
Exeter on the opening night of
the 26th season of the world's
most prestigious squash league!
Yorkshire club Pontefract, led by
England number one James Willstrop, secured their best ever
start in the PSL, beating Esporta
Oxford 3/2 - while the other tie in
Group A saw Nottingham also
overcome Leeds-based Chapel
Allerton 3/2. Last year’s runnersup Probuild Bristol produced the
most decisive victory in Group B,
with a 4/1 home win against
UniSport Guildford. The titleholders PCL Whitehall Security
Surrey H&RC recovered from 1/2
down to beat Surrey county rivals
TWP St George's Hill 3/2.
Malaysian star and first string Ong
Beng Hee made the best possible
start to his third season for Nottingham by clinching victory for the club
with an 11-8, 11-7, 11-3 win over
Jonathan Harford.
Like Devon & Exeter, former champions Nottingham may also have
benefited from the last-minute
reduction in the fire-power of
newcomers
Chapel
Allerton,
whose top string Alister Walker
was forced to pull out with injury. The Leeds newcomers
romped to a 2/0 lead after wins by
England number one Jenny Duncalf and squad latecomer Stephen
Coppinger.
However, Nottingham regular John
Rooney restored order for the
hosts, beating Chris Simpson in
four games before Julian Illingworth - the US champion making
his PSL debut - despatched the
visitors' Scott Arnold 11-9, 11-1, 511, 11-6.
The full results are shown below:
Nottingham 3 Chapel Allerton 2

Northamptonshire Get Top ‘Marks’!
Northamptonshire County Committee are trying to encourage their
squash players to brush up on their marking skills by organising several
marking & refereeing courses in the run up to the start of the season.
There is extra incentive for those interested as the County have kindly
agreed to fund these courses.
So far there have been successful courses held at Cripps and Daventry
Clubs. This is a great initiative by the County Association and will only
help progress the game forward. The number of people who do not
wish to mark a game during team matches is a growing problem and is
something that we all should be able to do.
If you wish to take advantage of this great opportunity and enrol on
one of these sessions simply contact Dave Everitt
(david.everitt22@btinternet.com) and get yourself up to speed with
the current rules.

Course Dates and Events
Isle of Man Team Competition
The Isle of Man Sports Club are hosting their fourth Annual ‘Squash Blitz Club Team Competition’. The event will
take place next year from 17th - 19th April.
The first Isle of Man Squash Blitz was held three years ago and has grown in strength year on year. The emphasis
is on fun but competitive squash, and with no county or country players allowed to enter, this gives players who
would not normally be selected to go on tour a chance to represent their club in competition. To be eligible for
the competition you must not have played squash at County level or above in the last 10 years.
The event which promises to be even better than last year with even more cash prizes and blitz t-shirts for all entrants. It is an excellent opportunity to play against other clubs and enjoy an exciting weekend away with your
team.
For more information or for an entry form, please go to www.iomsportschallenge.com, or email Les Callow at
les.c@manx.net or see the back of the newsletter.
