introduction
BUDAPEST AIRPORT - A ROUTE NOT TO BE MISSED
No one knows what the future brings. What we do know, however, is that we are ready for it.
“We are determined to carry on with our ambitious plan to turn Budapest Airport into the leading hub in Central
and Eastern Europe in terms of traffic growth and service quality.” - said CEO, Jost Lammers.
In 2012 Budapest Airport served more than 8.5 million passengers of which there was an all-time record of 8.3
million origin and departure passengers.
Despite the lack of a national hub-and-spoke carrier, Budapest continues to thrive as a destination for business,
leisure and MICE business given its beauty and ideal location on the banks of the Danube river. This summer
the airport will offer 81 destinations by 35 airlines. Of course, there are still some route opportunities which exist
and we look forward to discussing these with you during the Routes Europe conference 12th - 14th May 2013,
hosted by Budapest Airport..

market opportunities
As well as Budapest’s status as the hub of Hungarian
tourism, a desirable destination in its own right, the city’s
unique location at the heart of Europe also positions
Budapest Airport perfectly for route development.
CATCHMENT AREA
Hungary is the gem of the Central Eastern European
region. Because of its excellent location and progressive,
developed infrastructure, it is the most easily accessible
area in the region.
Budapest Airport has a catchment area of:
4.3 million people within 90 minutes drive
6 million people within two hours drive
13 million people within three hours drive
Budapest Airport is located along the M0 motorway,
making the airport easy to get to, not only from Hungary,
but also from neighbouring countries including Austria,
Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Romania and Croatia.
TOURISM IN HUNGARY
The legendary Hungarian hospitality, the Hungarian
wines and the favourable exchange rate are just a few
of the many reasons for visiting. In 2012 the number
of visitors increased by 7% when compared with 2011,
and hotel nights grew by 8%. Furthermore, only 9% of
visitors arrived by air, offering additional market growth
opportunities.
Hungarians speak a language and form a culture unlike
any other in the region. Hungary boasts one of the
world’s most beautiful cities: Budapest, the ‘Pearl of the
Danube’. Balaton, central Europe’s largest fresh water
lake is located here, providing a natural paradise for
visitors who can also enjoy the hundreds of therapeutic
mineral springs, which make Budapest a mecca for
wellbeing and spa tourism, attracting millions of visitors
each year.
