Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Stevie Wonder (Stevland Hardaway
Morris) the musical icon with over 20
Grammys, finished the Harveys Outdoor
Concert Series with his classic hits. One
of the most commercially successful
musical performers of the late 20th
century with over 30 Top Ten hits, Stevie
was joking around, played DJ with songs
from artists that have passed away,
and talked to the excited packed house
crowd. It was great to have him back in
Tahoe since his 2007 performance.
MontBleu has October 8th Drive-By
Truckers, They mix alternative country
and southern rock for 20 years. October
22nd Aaron Neville brings his New
Orleans, R&B, Pop, Soul, Gospel music
to enjoy. Hits include "Tell it Like it Is" and
"Everybody Plays the Fool". Playing with
his 3 brothers, "The Neville Brothers"
have recorded a lot of albums and they
finish the Jazz Festival every year in
New Orleans, his hometown. At 75 with
a new album "Apache", Aaron's always
a great performer to see. November
12th Collective Soul brothers Ed and
Dean Roland. Part of the 90's grunge
and alternative rock scene, hits include
"Shine", "December", "The World I Know"
and "Wasting Time". Their new CD is
"See What You Started by Continuing".
They were a cool rock show when I saw
them years back at MontBleu. Catch The
Killer Dueling Pianos at Blu Nightclub
on Friday and Saturday with a variety
of music. Opal on Friday and Saturday
has DJ music, go-go dancers and drink
specials. HQ Center Bar has karaoke
with Dreu Murin on Thursdays and live
music on Friday and Saturday.
Harrah's has October 8th Blood,
Sweat and Tears featuring Bo Bice.
You'll hear "Spinning Wheel", "And
When I Die", "You've Made Me So Very
Happy". October 14th Brian Wilson
presents "Pet Sounds". At 74 Wilson
has co-wrote 2 dozen Top 40 Beach
Boys hits. Rolling Stone Magazine has
"Pet Sounds" number 2 on their 500
Greatest Albums. Considered a music
genius and one of the most innovative
and influential creative forces in popular
music by critics and musicians. "Wouldn't
It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows" is
on that famous album from 1966 that
he considers his best achievement.
2012 The Beach Boys had their 50 Year
Reunion Tour at Harveys and Brian had
his own band play a few years before that
at Harrah's. The lights on stage made
for a wild color on his hair for a photo
that I took. He also talked to the crowd
between songs. The Beach Boys have
more hits and sold more records than
any American band and have collected
many awards. Playing Tahoe for many
years, see the man that helped create
that cool California sound. Wilson's book
comes out in October. October 22nd The
Lovin' Spoonful. Mid 60's hits include
"Summer in the City", "Do You Believe in
Magic" and "Did You Ever Have to Make
Up Your Mind". November 3rd Bush the
British rock band with lead singer Gavin
Rossdale. "Swallowed" was a big hit.
November 11-12th Abbacadabra with all
your ABBA songs. November 26th Elvin
Bishop with fun songs like "Rock My
Soul", "Struttin Myself". "Fooled Around
and Fell in Love". Always a good show.
Peek Nightclub has DJ music and go-go
dancers on Friday and Saturday. Center
Stage has Buddy Emmer Blues Band
and guest artists on Tuesdays and "Arty
the Party" on Friday and Saturday.
Arnold Palmer, the most popular
and one of the greatest golfers with 95
professional wins died at 87. Around 30
years ago I watched him play a Senior
Tournament at Edgewood Tahoe. Then
in 1989 I met "The KIng" at the AT&T
Tournament at Pebble Beach as my
brother Steve took a picture. He designed
over 300 golf courses, started the Golf
Channel, a huge clothing line and brought
golf to a world wide audience. Said to be
worth over 800 million.
Halloween parties to catch, 38th
Freakers Ball October 29th at MontBleu.
Wild costumes and lots of fun always.
October 28th 2nd Annual Rockin' Dead
Halloween Bash at Hard Rock Hotel
and Casino. Whiskey Dicks Saturday,
October 29.The November issue will
be our famous Halloween pictorial.
Lakeside Inn had a football kick off party
outside with live music, games, food and
drink specials. MontBleu had their 3rd
Annual Hops in the Yard Beer Fest in
their Outdoor Event Center. With over 45
handles, live music, games, food vendors,
it was a great lawn party. Sample the
Sierra Festival at Bijou Community Park
had over 20 local food vendors, wines,
local beers, live music, chef challenge
and was a very impressive Tahoe event
that was enjoyed by locals and tourists.
Wally's Huddle Grill & Tavern (the
old Sam's Place) is open with pizza,
burgers, tacos, salads, sandwiches
and cold beers. XHALE hookah lounge
at Stateline has DJ's, $1 shots and $2
Corona's from 9 till midnight. Harveys
has Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo with
free live music everynight and The
Improv with host Howie Nave and new
comics each week.

World Class Magic & More at The Loft Theatre
The Loft Theatre presents live
performance events year-round in the
Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe,
California. From world-class magic,
comedy, TEDx speakers, singer/
songwriters, and even Burlesque.
(Check website for schedule of events
http://thelofttahoe.com )
What makes The Loft Theatre so
special? Not only does it’s unique style
and vibe set it apart from anything else
on the South Shore, but it’s 1 of only
10 theatres in the United States that is
dedicated full-time to the art of magic.
Magic Fusion is Lake Tahoe’s
only year-round live production
show performing 6-nights a week
(dark Wednesdays).
It’s intimate
environment creates an even more
alluring “wow factor” being that this
special genre of parlour magic is being
performed right in front of your eyes.
No smoke and mirrors, no big goofy
boxes being dragged across the state,
this is truly the finest form of the art
of magic presented in a way that will
leave you breathless and bewildered.
The Loft Theatre constantly
rotates the stars of Magic Fusion, so
even if you’ve been once, you’ll want
to come back again and again to
see the stars who have been handpicked by Tony Clark, and deemed
to be the best in the world. Each
magician that performs at The Loft
is world-class, and award-winning
with impressive pedigrees. The Loft
experience can either include just the
show, or indulge yourself with some
of the finest Italian cuisine from their
award-winning Chef Lisa DevencenziMiller. The Loft has also created one
of Lake Tahoe’s hottest Ultra Lounges
featuring overstuffed, cozy furniture,
indoor fire-pit tables, and a full-service
bar. The Loft won the coveted “Best Of
Tahoe” award, as well as ranked one of
Tahoe’s “Must See” attractions.
ElectroSwing Burlesque, Tahoe’s
hottest music and dance revue, is
back by popular demand in the The
Loft Theatre-Lounge-Dining, a saucy
speakeasy-style lounge, restaurant
and gorgeous live theatre every
other Wednesday at 8 pm, beginning
October 12, and continuing every
other Wednesday. This stylistic and
original live production show features
the smooth, strong, and jazzy vocals
of Ashley Kepler, along with the
trumpet madness of Jef Derderian,
rhythmic drumming perfection by
Bishop Bautista, as well as the wildly
talented dance artists of The Dame
Doll Dancers, Jayde Reid and Mikaela
Bianchi. The cast is often rotating and
the songs changing, so you will never
see the same show twice! In addition to this enchanting
show, and as part of the ticket price,
Owner and Master Distiller of Tahoe
Moonshine, Jeff VanHee, will be
offering a flight of Tahoe Moonshine
tastings during intermission, including
Danger Dog (Cinnamon) Whiskey,
Jagged Peaks Gin, Jug Dealer Rum,
Hot Stinking Garlic Vodka, and
Whiskey. ElectroSwing Burlesque

Comedy From The Mountain
Hello fellow Leafers and fans of
October and all things scary coming up!
Man, I know that winter is the favorite
season (for some of us) but the preamble
leading up to it is this month! Maybe it's
seeing all those leaves changing colors
and pumpkins popping up everywhere
but there's nothing quite like the month of
October. Of course Halloween being my
favorite holiday (and I believe it is) is just
further evidence to some that I've always
suffered from arrested development trick
or treating even in college years. Okay,
part of the reasoning behind that is that
I attended Humboldt State University
and trick or treating was a good excuse
to get some extra candy caused by some
living the HSU lifestyle. Celebrate any
way you want and of course I can't wait
to see the November edition of the Lake
Tahoe Entertainer when the entire issue
is devoted to hundreds of pictures from
those who celebrated the holiday that is
Halloween this month.
Speaking of all things scary (sorry
Bob) comedian Bob Zany is up here and
a personal favorite and a comic I consider
local even though he doesn't technically
live up here. He's on my radio show every
Tuesday (on Howie's Morning Rush KRLT
93-9 The Lake) with 'The Zany Report'
and is literally a one-man-joke-making
machine. He does 'The Zany Report' to
numerous radio stations coast to coast,
has been a contributor to the nationally
syndicated "Bob & Tom Show," has a
podcast, "The Bob Zany Show with Erin
O’Conner," is on Facebook, Twitter (@
bobzany), Instagram (ZanyBob because
some loser took 'Bob Zany') and even has
a YouTube show called, "Baggage Claim"
where he snags famous folks at airports
as they wait for their baggage. Even
before the Internet was a reality Zany was
expanding his vast horizons performing
in probably every venue in all 50 states.
He's a writer for other shows and as
a producer for his own self-produced
comedy shows. Some of the names
that have found their way on his shows
included such stalwarts as the late Garry
Shandling, Yakov Smirnoff, Robert Wuhl,
Kevin Nealon and actor Nia Peeples. In
addition to his comedy Bob is also an
actor appearing on the big screen in such
movies as Matt Damon’s “The Informant!”
playing a lawyer, “23 Minutes To Sunrise,"
performing opposite Linda Blair in “Up
Your Alley" and recently on Showtime
playing the Roast Master of Brace Land
in the comedy, "Gigolos." Bob has also
appeared in several documentaries and
even made one himself called “Close But
No Cigar” which should be mandatory
viewing for all those wanting to go into
comedy as a career. The documentary is
an autobiographical journey chronicling
Bob Zany’s professional life which
includes numerous interviews from those
Bob met over the years and some who
have become major players in the comedy
business. It’s pretty sobering seeing one
individual working a sweet gig as one of
the top writers for SNL and than cut to Bob
leaving a one-nighter he just performed
at somewhere in the Midwest. As Steve
Martin once said, "Comedy isn't pretty."
Appearing with Bob is newcomer to these
parts, Wendi Starling who, I understand
is amazing drawing from real-life
experiences that others would shy away
from talking about. She should be a great
opposite to Zany which means a very
good week of comedy. See both Wendi
and Zany October 5th through the 9th.
Making his second appearance in 5
years (wow) Aussie comedian Jim Short
is long overdue here in South Tahoe.
Even though he was born out there Jim's
career started when he moved to Texas. I
first met Jim when he was residing in San
Francisco and he loved being the only
Aussie in the bay area who did comedy.
He was an easy stand out when he
competed in the San Francisco Comedy
Competition and won back in 2004. It was
ironic too because he had this almost
self-deprecating persona about him even
declaring, “I’m not a loser. I’ve tried. I’m
a failure.” In addition winning comedy
competitions he’s also done quite well on
the comedy festival circuit including the
Montréal International Just For Laughs
Comedy Festival (where he was deemed
one of the “Talk of the Fest” performers),
The Las Vegas Comedy Festival and The
Aspen Comedy Festival just to name a
few not including those from his native
Australia. Jim has a quick wit and is the
perfect guy to have on as a radio guest
evidenced by the number of female callers
he received the last time he was here
back in 2011. Oh sure the ladies (and one
guy) loved the accent but Jim uses that
obvious trait to set up some of the best
absurdities about what Americans think
about the Land Down Under. “We’re not
all crocodile hunters, bbq shrimp and live
on the beaches,” he said. “That wouldn’t
be such a bad existence though don’t
get me wrong.” Jim’s done all of the late
television shows including stints on The
Late Show with David Letterman, The
Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,
Shorties Watchin’ Shorites, Comedy
Central, Late Night with Conan O’Brien,
Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen,
Central’s Premium Blend and NBC’s Late
Friday. But of all those credits (and some
movie stuff in the works) Jim feels most
accomplished adding Lake Tahoe to his
repertoire. Appearing with Jim is Nick
Youssef who is one of the few comedians
to actually be born and raised in Los
Angeles. Oh yeah, he also cycles around
the Lake the last time he was here making
it look easy. Thanks a lot Nick. Jim and
Nick appear for the first time together up
here October 12th through the 16th.
Another personal fav is comedian
Allan Havey who has had an incredible
year what with appearing in the Coen
Bothers' movie, "Hail, Caesar!," the
television series, "Love" (playing a
grumpy guy) and next month on the
TV drama series, "Code Black." Like
Howie Nave
Zany Havey is also on my morning radio
show (when he's available) talking all
things entertainment for our segment,
"Howiewood & Haveywood." It seems
like (to me at least) that Havey's acting
career got a huge boost after appearing
on AMC's "Mad Men" where a lot of
folks in Hollywood took notice. Other
television credits include Louis C.K.‘s
show, “Louie,” Larry David’s “Curb Your
Enthusiasm” on HBO, “The Late Show
with David Letterman,” “Late Night With
Conan O’Brien,” Comedy Central, NBC's
"The Office" and appearances on Ashton
Kutcher’s reality-based television show,
“Punk’d.” In addition to this year's "Hail,
Caesar!," Havey has been seen on the
big screen in such movies as 2014's "Top
Five" (written, directed and starring Chris
Rock), “Hancock” starring Will Smith, “The
Informant!” with Matt Damon, “Internal
Affairs” with Richard Gere and Andy
Garcia, “Checking Out” with Jeff Daniels,
“Rounders” (again with Matt Damon),
“Wild Things Part 2: The Glades” with
Isaiah Washington and “Pilot." As much
as Allan loves acting and doing stand up
in clubs and theaters all over the country
if you ask him what his most rewarding
accomplishment has been he’ll tell you it
was performing overseas entertaining our
troops in the Middle East. Appearing with
Havey is Alycia Cooper who is very fast
rising star. She's kind of a cross between
Chris Rock, George Carlin, and Margaret
Cho (three of her idols). Since making
her national television debut in 2000
she's appeared on BET’s “Oh Drama,”
“Comicview,” “Last Comic Standing,”
“Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed,”
”The Mo’Nique Show,” “Wanda Does It,”
“Gossip Queens,” “Nick’s Mom’s Night
Out,” “The Bob and Tom Show,” “Stand
Up in Stilettos,” “Stand Up & Deliver,” “The
Ricki Lake Show,” “Totally Biased with W.
Kamau Bell,” and is now a regular panelist
on “Bethenny,” on Fox. Whew. Havey
and Cooper together (also their first time
working together) October 26th through
the 30th.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys every
Wednesday through Sunday.
Fly Fishing
Finally my favorite time of the year!
Fall is when we get to fish with BIG
Bugs and Little bugs and we have water
this year to boot. The Browns color up
and the Rainbows start to fatten up for
the coming Winter. Our surroundings
start their changes as well with different
colors and the crispness in the air. Fly
fishing in the Fall stimulates the senses
as we know Winter is coming and we
need to get our fishing in now before
the snow flies.
Hoppers are abundant with fish
eating them as they are presented with
the occasional dropper fly underneath,
the last of the subsurface action that
is needed. Fall is for dry fly fishing in
my opinion and Trico's are one of my
favorite hatches, small and hard to see
but awesome when a trout eats a fly
that is so small. Trico's really test your
skills! The October Caddis is the other
Fall bug that has it's start during the
month of September, Big and easy to
see and can be skittered on the surface
to get the fishes attention. Sometimes
the air can be thick with them and other
times they are far and few between but
the fish recognize them and will usually
eat them without hesitation. Some of
my favorite Fall days have been fishing
with Orange Stimulators on numerous
Northern California waters like The Pit,
The McCloud, The Truckee, The Carson
and The Walker rivers. An October
Caddis with a Trico as the dropper can
be great this time of the year!
Some of my favorite opportunities,
close to home, during the month of
October: Backcountry lakes like the
Velma's, Crater Lake, Crag Lake,
Raymond and Marlette Lake all of which
can fish well this time of the year. Take
a float tube if you can for best access.
Terrestrials are best on these lakes
like Ants, Beetles and Hoppers and of
course fished on the surface!
My favorite close rivers this time of
the year are The East Carson down low,
The East Walker in the pocket water
section and The Truckee downstream
from Hirschdale. All of which should
fish well with dries! If you want to get
away from others you will need to hike
a bit which somewhat guarantees some
solitude. The kids are back in school
and most of our waters are seeing a lot
less pressure.
Heenan Lake opened on the 2nd
of September and is always worth a try,
especially as we get into the month of
October. Best fished from a tube or boat,
the days of good shore fishing seem to
be over with a huge build up of weeds
along the shore. This year should have
quite a few Bees like all the other area
lakes and maybe the fish will get up on
dries? Otherwise the traditional flies
that have worked over the years are
Black Crystal Buggers, Blood colored
Leeches, Prince Nymphs, Scuds and
flashy Streamers stripped with a full
sinking fly line. Indicator Nymphing is
the other method and can be fished
at different depths with Chironomids,
Scuds, Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs
and Balance Leeches. A couple of my
old favorites were Olive Prince Nymphs
and Orange Scuds slow stripped under
an indicator. I know these fish in Heenan
aren't as big as those in Pyramid but
they are just as fun to catch!
Pyramid opens on the 1st of October
and everyone is excited this year more
than others with the thought of catching
Victor Babbit
a 30 pound plus Cutthroat. Look for the
bait balls along the shore or fish from a
tube or boat, the fish tend to be pretty
deep in the start of the season if they
are not on bait balls. Game Changer
type streamers to imitate the Tui Chub
or Sac Perch should be a good choice
of fly. For further information on these
fisheries or any others in our area, stop
by the shop or give us a call and we will
be glad to help in any way we can to
get you out on the water for a fun day
of fishing. We have Guides available
for most of these waters and we can
supply anything you need for fishing
with us or on your own. We are located
on Highway 50 and about 3.5 miles into
California from the Casinos. 2705 Lake

Harrah's & Harveys - The Great Entertainers
The seventh annual Lake Tahoe
Food and Wine Festival highlights
the month of October at Harrah’s and
Harveys Lake Tahoe. And there’s
also an autumn bounty of great
entertainment at Harrah’s South Shore
Room over the next two months, so
let’s first get into that stellar schedule.
Tommy Castro & The Painkillers
bring their high energy blues show
to Harrah’s on Oct. 1, followed by
the enduring Blood, Sweat & Tears
featuring lead singer Bo Bice on Oct.
8. Bice, as everyone recalls, was
runner-up to Carrie Underwood on
season four of American Idol and he
has enjoyed a hugely successful solo
and collaborative singing career since
then.
Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson
returns to the South Shore Room
on Oct. 14, this time dedicating the
show to playing the entire Pet Sounds
album in celebration of the record’s
50th anniversary. Pet Sounds was
named the second greatest album of
all time out of a list of 500 rock albums
by Rolling Stone magazine!
The Lovin’ Spoonful perform
their long list of hits on Oct. 22, one
of the highlights of the Food and
Wine Festival weekend, followed by
the lovely Christian rock chanteuse
Susan Ashton on Oct. 29.
Popular British rock band Bush
bring their string of hits to Harrah’s
on Nov. 3, and Abbacadabra – the
Ultimate ABBA Concert returns for
two nights, Nov. 11 and 12. Big
Fun is back in the SSR when the
indestructible bluesman Elvin Bishop
rounds out the month on Thanksgiving
Weekend, Nov. 26.
The seventh annual “South Lake
Tahoe Food and Wine Festival”
arrives at Harrah's and Harveys Lake
Tahoe, Oct. 21 - 23, for an autumn
weekend of great food, fine wine and
high spirits.
Events for this year’s Food and
Wine Festival include lots of dining and
tasting experiences, plus discussions
and presentations by celebrated food,
wine and spirits experts. Of course,
food and wine are the biggest stars
and a spectacular “Grand Market
Expo” – featuring sumptuous dishes
from Harrah's, Harveys and other
Caesars Entertainment properties’
best restaurants, plus top-shelf spirits
and the finest wines of Napa Valley
and beyond – highlights the weekend.
Activities begin Friday evening,
Oct. 21, with a Sake Tasting at Sushi
Kai restaurant on the second floor
of Harrah’s hotel. Enjoy tasting a
variety of sake and discuss the basic
components – such as traditional
versus non-traditional – and the
growing popularity of sake in the U.S.
Later that night, a Food & Wine
Kick-Off Party takes place at PEEK
Nightclub at Harrah’s featuring the
models of Grey Goose Vodka, drink
specials and great music. Admission
is free for ladies and only ten bucks for
gentlemen.
The South Lake Tahoe Food
and Wine Festival kicks into high
gear on Saturday, Oct. 22 with the
"Grand Market Expo," this year
returning to the recently remodeled
Special Events Center at Harrah’s
Lake Tahoe. Stroll through the Grand
Market and enjoy ongoing, interactive
entertainment and the multifarious
tastes of Harrah's best restaurants
from around the country, plus local
favorites, top-shelf spirits, craft brews
and the best wineries in Napa Valley
and beyond.
The Grand Market Expo, open
from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday,
promises to be a fun-filled afternoon
of high spirits and culinary delights.
Additional events on Saturday evening
includes the elegant President’s
Dinner with Special Guest Violet
Grgich beginning at 4:30 p.m. at
Harveys 19 Kitchen • Bar.
This year’s President’s Dinner
celebrates 40 years of the “Taste of
Paris” where Wine from Napa beat
the best wines in the world. Hosted
by Violet Grgich, daughter of Mike
Grgich, who made the wine that won
“Best Wine in the World” at the Paris
Tasting. This intimate four-course
meal offers mouth-watering pairings of
specialty dishes and fine Grgich wines.
Questions are highly encouraged at
this one of a kind dinner party.
In keeping with the theme of “food,
wine and spirits,” The Lovin’ Spoonful
will be on stage for a special concert
in Harrah’s South Shore Room
on Saturday night, performing five
decades-worth of pop and rock hits,
including: “Do You Believe in Magic,”
“Younger Girl,” “You Didn’t Have to Be
So Nice,” “Did You Ever Have to Make
Up Your Mind?,” “Summer in the City”
and “Daydream.”
After the show, you’ll still have
time to catch the Craft Whiskey
Revolution at Harrah’s 16th floor
Summit Room. Featuring new styles
of whiskey from around the world,
which are “Crafted,” using different
processes to create amazing varieties
of whiskey. This is “Not Your Father’s
Whiskey”!
If that’s not enough, check out
South Lake Tahoe Food & Wine
Night at PEEK Nightclub. Some of
the best regional DJ’s will be spinnin’
and the Grey Goose will be flowing
