I am a virus that can conquer your immune system. Once I weaken the immune system, sickness or death results from microorganisms or cancer cells that your body’s natural defenses would normally defeat. They call me Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and I cause the disease AIDS. Page 1 Page 2 Picture # 1 Picture 1: That’s me … ain’t I cute? We may take months or even years to develop in your body but the slow excruciatingly painful death we cause is worth the wait! Antibiotics and vaccinations have almost put us out of business but we are adapting. Give us some time and “we’ll be back”! P.S. a close cousin of ours causes leprosy, how cool is that!! Parasites and cancer cells fear for their lives when I come on to the scene. One of my worst enemies is the virus. The only way I can defeat them is by destroying the body cells that they hide in. That is why I cannot rid your body of a virus. Once they invade, they are there to stay. But I will do my best to keep them under control!” Don’t shoot! Your white blood cells can destroy us as fast as we can grow. But if you are old and weak or get very sick, we can settle in your lungs and take your breath away...FOREVER!! Page 2 Page 3 We love to attack the alveoli of your lungs so that they fill up with fluid. I guess you could say we make you drown in your own fluids. That’s pretty sick!!” Actually, many different bacteria can cause pneumonia: Pneumococcus bacterium Picture # 1 Table of Contents PNEUMONIA BACTERIA Page 2 Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Picture # 2 Table of Contents PNEUMONIA BACTERIA Page 3 Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Klebsiella pneumonia bacteria Picture # 3 Picture # 5 Peptostreptococcus bacteria Picture # 4 Other pneumonia bacteria Picture # 6 Picture # 7 Table of Contents Bacillus Anthracis (ANTHRAX) Page 1 Page 1 Page 2 “Hey, good to see you again! You’ve know about us for a loooong time (since 1877). We cause skin problems if we get into a cut and could even kill you if you inhale us into your lungs. With medicine, you can destroy us if you get treatment early enough. We like to let you think you’re just getting a cold and then we hit you hard. Facts about ANTHRAX - caused by Bacillus anthracis bacteria - mostly found in animals such as horses, sheep, goats, and mules - rare in humans. Only about 1 in 100,000 people who are exposed actually get the disease (from animals). - Skin Anthrax: bacteria enter through cuts and scratches on skin. - Intestinal Anthrax: you must eat infected, undercooked meat. This is very rare in developed countries. - Inhalation Anthrax: dried spores are inhaled. Most dangerous form. - All forms of the disease can be treated with antibiotics but inhalation anthrax must be treated early. - anthrax is not passed on from person to person. - anthrax can kill you. - anthrax can be used as a biological weapon. Here in picture #1 you see us in some human blood (we’re the cute little purple ones). Once in your blood, we invade your nervous system and cause you to “sleep to death”. We get inside of you when you are bitten by an infected Tsetse (teet-see) Fly. “That’s Me!” P.S. There’s a much better picture of me on the next page!
