his railroad line (belonging to the New Haven
Railroad) was built in 1882, and extended
from Danbury (and points east) through Brewster
and Patterson. The line continued into Dutchess
County, through Hopewell Junction northwest to
Poughkeepsie, across the historic Poughkeepsie
Bridge to Maybrook in Orange
County. A branch line also
ran from Hopewell Junction
southeast to Beacon and
another from Hopewell
Junction northeast to Millerton.
Passenger service existed
along this line until 1927, but ridership was very
low. This line was double tracked in 1906, and the
secondary track was removed in 1962. This freight
line prospered well until the Poughkeepsie Bridge
burned in 1974.

The Maybrook Trailway spans 5.5 miles in Putnam County,
from Lake Tonetta to Danbury, CT.
Today, the line is owned by Metro-North Railroad
and extends from Danbury to Beacon, connecting all
three of the MNR lines. Of historic note, the Maybrook
connected to the Putnam Division in Brewster
(Putnam Junction) via a huge trestle over the Harlem
line. The trestle was 116’ long and 18’ high, and
existed from 1882 to 1907 when it burned.
The Maybrook was later
connected to the Harlem
also at-grade just east
of Putnam Avenue,
and west of North
Main Street. In 1976,
Conrail installed a better
connection between the Maybrook and the Harlem at
Dykemans, just south of Ice Pond.
