A U G U S T 2 0 1 3 Naples Anchor News Published Annually by the Greater Naples Chapter of Delta Gamma Fraternity Alumnae News! Jan Hankins welcomed grandson Luke to the family. Stacey Deffenbaugh will marry Keith Meyer on January 5, 2014. Lisa Honig welcomed grandson George on August 2, 2013. Pam Trentadue’s granddaughter pledged Delta Gamma at the Univ. of Missouri! Monica Forrestal is moving to N. Carolina – we will miss her! Doupe and Fiorillo Honored In 2013 Meredith Doupe and Joan Fiorillo were both recognized in separate events this past year for their outstanding contributions to our chapter. Meredith was honored at Founders Day for a decade of executive board work first as VP Programming and then as VP Communications. She was responsible for expanding our programs to include Girls Nights Out and Lunch Bunches and for updating our newsletter and creating our website. In addition, to the Stellar Award, our annual Collegiate Scholarship was named in her honor (see recipient’s story on page 8). Joan Fiorillo received a Stellar Award at our Board and Chair thank you meeting in May. Joan was thanked for her 12 years of service as our Historian. Joan was responsible for recording our chapter’s history first by taking pictures and then creating beautiful scrapbooks and more recently Joan helped us move to the digital world by working with Meredith to upload our pictures to social media and our website. Meredith and Joan may not be in leadership roles but they will both remain active Greater Naples members and I know you join me in thanking them for their service and recognizing them for ‘doing good’ for over 20 years combined! Save the Date! Fashion Show Founder’s Day Convention 2014 February 8, 2014 Bonita Bay Club March 1, 2014 Naples Sailing and Yacht Club June 26-29, 2014 The Arizona Biltmore Hotel Phoenix AZ Hostess: Gretchen Urban Hostess: Karen Smith NAPLES ANCHOR NEWS AUGUST 2013 President’s Letter By Lisa Honig Hats Off to Greater Naples! I cannot help reiterating our Founders Day theme because it is such a perfect way to recognize yet another fabulous year while we also look forward to the new season. I am honored that you have elected me as your President for two more years and along with a fabulous board we plan to create yet another season of programming, events, activities, volunteer opportunities and even the chance to help a collegiate chapter to keep you all engaged and active! We have five returning Board members: Diane Bauman (VP Foundation), Stacey Deffenbaugh (VP Programming), Karen Smith (VP Membership), Karin Herrmann (VP Finance) and Carole Feagler (Recording Secretary) and one new board member Andrea Pandazi (VP Communications) – these women work tirelessly to lay the foundation for this wonderful chapter! Supporting the board and working with the members are 17 dedicated chairwomen who lend their expertise to a variety of positions. We have three first time chairwomen this year and I want to name them: Judy Wick, Sally Hoffman and Kim Lagasse. Thank you to all of our chairs for giving their time to help our chapter excel! I also want to recognize and thank all of our members because it’s you that make us special by giving your time, talent and treasure to the Greater Naples Alumnae Group. You are all busy women who work, raise children, take care of parents, are active in sports and boards and still find the time to also participate in our chapter. Because of you we have once again been honored with the 5 Star Award! I am constantly amazed at how each and every year we can top the year before in every category. Let’s look at just some of the components of the 5 Star Award and how we did it again: Membership: 101 dues paid members which as a number is terrific but of more importance is the number of you that participate! This chapter welcomes all alumnae whether they can attend one event or all of them because it’s about our sisterhood and doing good! We also welcomed 11 new members to our chapter and they represent a wide range of ages, backgrounds and interests. Programming: We added new special events this year such as the Ritz Carlton Tea and Afternoon at The Phil that showed how open you all are to new activities even if they do cost a bit more. Attendance at all of our events is strong and I love seeing how many different women come to each event. We want to provide you with options so that you can pick and choose those events that best fit your schedules and interests. (continued on page 3) 2 NAPLES ANCHOR NEWS AUGUST 2013 President’s Letter (continued) By Lisa Honig Philanthropy: You continue to support the Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic, the Naples Lions’ preschool vision screenings and the Lighthouse of Collier’s children’s summer camp with over 1,500 volunteer hours. We are consistently over 1,000 hours per year and that is a huge number for a group of women such as ours in a seasonal community – remember we do most of this in just 4 months! Fundraising: We raised over $3,200 this year so that we could provide support to local organizations, a collegian and a sister in need. Communications: After years of talking about it we finally launched our website www.greaternaples.deltagamma.org and it is a treasure trove of information about our chapter. I hope you all use it regularly when you want to find out what is going on in our chapter. More than 90% of our dues paying members now have email which is a huge increase from just 5 years ago. This allows us to get information to you that is current and ‘just in time’. Sisterhood: We like to have fun and go to lunches and plays and fashion shows but we also put our sisters first. In times of need, health issues and loss you come through to provide support, meals and prayers to help our sisters through these times of crisis. I hear time and time again how much your notes and words of encouragement mean to our sisters when they need them the most. I mention all of this because I had the opportunity to represent our chapter at the Alumnae Institute in Columbus Ohio this past April. This event is held every four years and is an opportunity for alumnae chapter presidents and collegiate chapter advisors to come together and via a structured program hone old skills and learn new ones so that we can be the best possible leaders of our chapters. We had sessions on leadership style and how it affects groups, on volunteers and how to lead them, on coaching and mentoring, and succession planning. We also spent ½ of a day on alumnae issues and technology. As always the best part of these events is the opportunity to talk with other Presidents and our Fraternity leaders to get new ideas and get energized about our Fraternity. And believe me when I say you all make my job so easy! There are obviously many fantastic chapters but there are also many more that are just making it in most or all of the categories mentioned. I get asked all the time how we do it and what is the key to our success and honestly I don’t have one pat answer. You have to have great leadership, passionate members and a common purpose and we have all of that for sure. We are successful as a group because we are constantly evolving and recognizing that what our members need and want changes all the time. Last year is now in our rear view mirror and we are focused on the future and the upcoming season. It’s a convention year so we will be working on our applications for awards while also striving for the 5 Star Award again in 2014. I look forward to going to Phoenix and representing all of you and hopefully winning another award (or two)! You all know how much I love talking about them! It’s time to take a look at our calendar and read the articles in this newsletter to find out what’s in store for the upcoming season. Join us as often as you can and know that you will be welcomed with open arms. Let us know what we can do to make this chapter even better. If you haven’t been involved in awhile or never, do not let that stop you. We are bound together as Delta Gammas and we signed up for lifetime membership. So dust off that anchor and come on back, you’ll be glad you did! Chelsea is a delightful young woman with stellar academics who is very active not only in Delta Gamma but many other campus activities. Chelsea is from Fort Mill, South Carolina outside Charlotte and has two younger siblings. She is a Chemistry major in her senior year who is applying to dental school following in the footsteps of her mother. Chelsea is doing research this summer in the Chemistry Department at Furman, which she does during the school year also. She has held many positions in Delta Gamma starting as P.R. Director. Last year, she was V.P. Membership and in charge of recruitment…a huge job as we all know and served on Honor Board…another challenging position of which I know firsthand. For her senior year, Chelsea was slated to be V.P. Foundation for the upcoming year but will now be the Head Panhellenic Recruitment Counselor. She will be in charge of 22 recruitment counselors leading them through helping incoming freshman with recruitment. Interestingly, recruitment is held in the spring at Furman University, so Chelsea will have to disassociate from her DG Chapter for the entire Fall and part of the Spring semester. Luckily, several of her good friends are also recruitments counselors with her. Chelsea’s activities don’t stop there. She is the President of Operation Smile on her campus. Operation Smile is a wonderful organization that provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe. In addition, she is involved in the American Chemical Society. I so enjoyed talking with Chelsea. As you can see, she is an outstanding example of a Delta Gamma collegian, and it makes me very proud that the Greater Naples Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter can continue to support exceptional young women like Chelsea. UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA & GREATER NAPLES As most of you know we have never been affiliated with a collegiate chapter because there is no local Delta Gamma Chapter. Well, that’s about to change! Karin Herrmann reached out to our VP Alumnae at EO and together they identified a chapter that could use alumnae support from afar – University of Florida. Karin has been in communication with their chapter advisor and developed a list of possible areas where we could help such as: 1) Advising from a distance 2) Support for planning their Founder's Day event 3) Support for planning in and participating in Foundation events such as Anchor Splash or Dance Marathon 4) Attendance/support at initiation 5) Implementation of an Aunt Hannah Program where the Fall new member class is assigned to an alumna who acts as an additional mentor the new member. This can be done via letters, email or a once a semester mixer. Obviously some of these require a bigger commitment than others so at our next board meeting in August, we will discuss where we think we can add the most value to their chapter. If you have any thoughts on this opportunity or would like to be involved in the implementation, please contact one of the board members. Stay tuned for more information on how you can participate in this new endeavor with the University of Florida. 8 NAPLES ANCHOR NEWS AUGUST 2013 Introducing Andrea Pandazi by Carole Feagler Hello Sisters! I would like to introduce one of the newest members of our Greater Naples Delta Gamma Alumnae Group! Her name is Andrea Pandazi, and you will be seeing more of her this year at meetings and hearing from her in her new role as VP Communications. She has had a fascinating life and I want to share some of it with you. Andrea pledged DG at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. She is an attorney with an MBA as well. Her resume is very interesting to say the least! She has worked for the EPA in California, Bank of America and Security Pacific's merger, Cargill in Minneapolis where she traveled fifty weeks a year internationally, living in Singapore, London and back in California. After becoming involved with the Women's Shelter in Naples, she started a business called S.A.F.E. of Florida (service alliance for elders of Florida). She has also started it in Wisconsin, and its goal is to provide assistance to elders in the form of advocacy and services. Finally tired of the hectic pace, she quit to start a wholesale Greek cookie business -Yaya's Cookies was the brand name. Upon sale of the business in 2011, she had customers in 47 states! Andrea's parents are 89 and 90, respectively, and in mostly good health. Her father was working until just last year!! She and her sister are very devoted to their care. Andrea is blessed with many little people in her life through cousins and friends. She is a godmother to four girls! CANCER PREVENTION STUDY 3 Our chapter members, our loved ones and our friends have all been impacted by cancer and we have all had that helpless feeling of not being able to help. Well, this October you can make a difference! Our community will have the unique opportunity to participate first hand in a landmark new cancer research study, Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) being sponsored by the American Cancer Society. This is an opportunity for those of us between the ages of 30-65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer to actively get involved and to help prevent cancer for this and future generations. Enrollment will be taking place at NCH, Downtown Naples Hospital nd rd and North Naples Hospital October 2 and 3 . Please tell your friends, families and co-workers about this study and encourage them to participate. For more information and to make your appointment please visit www.cancer.org/cps3florida. She has many hobbies and sports that she enjoys--photography, reading, sports, traveling, gardening, and hard work! I asked her what her favorite food is, and she confessed that she likes absolutely everything except brussels sprouts and caramel! In response to the favorite fantasy, dream or goal question, Andrea said, "someday I'd love to start a foundation." That sounds totally in character, doesn't it? We are so fortunate to have Andrea in our chapter, so please welcome her when you attend a meeting! 9 NAPLES ANCHOR NEWS AUGUST 2013 A Volunteer’s Perspective By Judy Falkinburg In early spring of 2012, I received an e-mail from the Naples Delta Gamma alumnae group announcing the opening of the newly renovated Lions Eye Clinic in Bonita Springs. There was to be an opening ceremony and a tour of the facility. All interested persons were invited to attend. occasions mentioned the difficulty they had obtaining ophthalmologic care for their indigent patients and since I was currently looking for a volunteer position this invitation seemed to be meant for me. I attended the event, began my training a few weeks later, and now my time at the Clinic has become a large and meaningful part of my life. Service to others was deeply instilled in me as a Delta Gamma pledge, and consequently volunteering has always been a large part of my life. The clinic is a lovely facility, very light, bright, nicely decorated, well equipped and staffed with very competent people. DG volunteers work, hand in hand with other volunteers from the Lions Club, as well as, the volunteer Doctors. We all share, interact and become friends. My husband, an active volunteer at the Neighborhood Health Clinic had on numerous I have found this volunteer work to be a win win situation for all involved. The patients receive competent health care that they could not otherwise afford and the volunteers receive the satisfaction of participating in something very important that helps our patients lead more productive lives. Our patients come from all walks of life and most face unbelievable challenges – health, financial and or cultural. Over the years I have found there is something for me to learn from every interaction I have with other people and I treasure the opportunity to learn from the patients the Clinic serves. If you have time to give, please consider joining us at the Clinic. I guarantee you will not only make new friends but you will leave with a feeling of having done something meaningful for the lives of others. Breast Cancer Support Group In March 2011 we started the Greater Naples Delta Gamma Breast Cancer Survivor and Support Special Interest Group. Our get togethers allow us to be able to share our stories of hope and survival. We talk about new treatments, testing and living with cancer. We support each other and welcome anyone who has been touched by breast cancer and would like to discuss breast cancer issues. Our group meets a few times a year, and information will be sent by e-mail. The Greater Naples Delta Gamma Alumnae Group will participate in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 12th and in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, March 8th. Everyone is welcome to join our team including spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, etc. If you would like more information please contact Karin Herrmann at dgkarin@gmail.com or (239) 595-1859. 10 NAPLES ANCHOR NEWS AUGUST 2013 Why Membership Is Special by Karen Smith Dear Sisters, Welcome ONE and ALL…to an exciting alumnae year which will capture the interest and enthusiasm, but mostly the caring spirit, which has embraced our sisterhood since the moment we accepted that beautiful invitation to pledge Delta Gamma! Many of us made that journey to initiation quite a number of years ago, but continue to…or perhaps reunite with…our sisterhood. On the other hand, we are meeting and attracting many recent college graduates who add so many exciting ideas and warm support and technical expertise to our entire membership. I was so appreciative to receive my 50 year pin last spring, just months before my darling Mother passed away and I buried her with her original initiation pin AND with her 75th anniversary pin from Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was so delighted for me when I pledged DG, as did my younger sister, and when we were both elected house president our senior year. Our Greater Naples Membership reached another record number of 100 this past year…and we are so grateful for those who are able to be frequent attendees and also those who support our chapter’s goals and involvement without regular participation. All assist in the fine and fun effort that Lisa describes in her President’s Report. (By the way, we are the most fortunate and grateful alumnae chapter in the nation to have Lisa lead our chapter for a second term after she accepted a major position with the American Cancer Society last winter.) Our membership application is on the last page of this newsletter. I hope you know that we love meeting and greeting you as members of our alumnae chapter, but membership is not required to attend any of our events. Involvement may be as much or as little as time and energy permit and may vary from year to year or season to season. Some Sisters find their commitment is focused on volunteer activities while others frequent the Saturday luncheon meetings or are only able to attend the Girls Night Out gatherings. And some of us occasionally try to do it all! I anticipate another beautiful year of Greater Naples Sisterhood with old friends and new ones as well. If you would like to learn more about our chapter please contact me at samandkaren1965@aol.com or Barb Heideman our New Member Chair at barbatthelake@roadrunner.com. In Memoriam We said goodbye to three sisters this past year: Julie Barry Mary Jean Flinn Jane Plum They will all be missed. 11 NAPLES ANCHOR NEWS Local Dues for 2013-14 Dues for the upcoming year will be $25 for all members.
