BAHAMAS ANTI-DOPING COMMISSION Quarterly Newsletter CALDON WHYMS April 2015 Issue Vol. 4 CATERINA LEAM Picture caption Queen's College Lyford Cay International Amy Burrows St. John's College Message from The Chairman of the Bahamas Anti-Doping Commission Firstly, I extend greetings to all of the anti-doping partners in The Bahamas, for the year 2015 and beyond. It is with great pride that I inform you in this our first 2015 newsletter, that the anti-doping movement in the country has made tremendous strides. The journey to where we are today with a nationwide obligation to spread the anti-doping message, has been quite challenging. I shall be ever grateful to my colleagues in the Bahamas Anti-Doping Commission who collectively have risen to every task before us. I commend also the dedicated members of the groups that work directly under the BADC jurisdiction and contribute mightily to the movement. I refer to the Therapeutic Exemption Committee, the Disciplinary Panel, the Appeals Tribunal and the Doping Control Officers. We have received endorsements from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and the Caribbean Region Anti-Doping Organization (CRADO). We will not rest on our laurels though. The work before us is consistent and we are proud of the great reputation The Bahamas has in adhering to the World Anti-Doping Code. We pledge to continue working to the maximum to foster the culture of excellent compliance. Dr. Jerome Lightbourne Our hope for 2015 is that we can experience an expansion of our national program in the area of more direct links to sporting federations. We applaud those federations that have already signed on to work closely with us and we encourage others to do the same. Our base of operation, atop the Betty Kelly-Kenning Swim Complex, is well fortified with anti-doping information and we invite federation leaders to update themselves so that they can become more comfortable in a partnership role with the BADC. I close this first message of the year by expressing sincere appreciation on behalf of the Commission, to the Government of The Bahamas for having confidence in us and affording the amenities necessary for the job at hand. 2 BAHAMAS ANTI-DOPING NATIONAL ART AND ESSAY CONTEST 2014 The BADC, through this Annual Contest, sought to educate and inspire young persons in the Bahamas by stimulating them to exercise their creative processes in interpreting the concept of Clean Sports in a world where too many athletes take performance enhancing substances to gain an unfair advantage over their competitors. Young Bahamian citizens between the ages of 5 and 18 were invited to participate in Art, Photography and Essay Competitions in Elementary, Junior and Senior Categories and submit their entries before the deadline of November 28, 2014. With full support from both Ministries of Education and Sports, the Contest was advertised via Radio, TV and Newspapers in New Providence and Grand Bahama. The Bahamas Anti-Doping Commission (BADC) developed a stronger connection to Grand Bahama in 2014. Already with a significant portion of the Doping Control Officers hailing from the Second City, in 2014 the BADC was able to successfully reach out into the youth sector of the island with encouraging results. James “Goon” Culmer, the legendary basketball player out of West End, Grand Bahama, mentors a youth program in that community. He has agreed to be the catalyst for passing on antidoping information to West End youngsters in his program.
