January 31, 2011 Volume 9, Issue 19 www.nccu.edu/law/theweekly.html PROFESSIONALISM DINNER WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2011 at the UNIVERSITY CLUB in DURHAM The Law School will be hosting the fifth annual Professionalism Dinner (co-sponsored by the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism) for law students on Wed, Feb. 16, 2011 at 6:30pm at the University Club in Durham, NC. Law School and other bar leaders, and to enjoy a wonderful meal. The dinner is open to all law students, but space is limited. Students interested in signing up for the Professionalism Dinner must see Ms. Perry in Suite 170 (where Dean Morgan’s office is) between today and Thursday, February 10th to fill out their name, email address and class year on a slip of paper. The dinner will be an interactive dinner for students and attorneys. The moderator for the evening will be Professor Michael Wallace and a fun time should be had by all! Evening students may give their names to Dean The dinner is a great Morgan or to Ms. Roberts opportunity for students in Dean Meddock’s office to meet alumni of the who will get them to Dean Morgan. All names will go into a box for a lottery drawing. Next week, Dean Morgan and Associate Dean Sims will pull names to determine who will attend the dinner. Students will receive confirmation emails and their names will be posted in The Weekly. 2011 Barrister’s Ball: A Night at Prestonwood Save the Date! The 2011 Barrister's Ball: A Night at Prestonwood will take place on Friday, February 25, 2011 from 8pm-12:30am. The ball will be held at the Prestonwood Country Club located at 300 Prestonwood Parkway Cary, NC 27513. The attire is formal. Dinner will be served until 10:30pm. Tickets are $15 per student and $25 for a couple. Tickets will be sold in the fishbowl starting Monday January 31, 2011. Tickets are limited! THE LEGAL WRITING PROGRAM PRESENTS . . . THE 2L & 3L (3LE & 4LE) LEGAL ANALYSIS WORKSHOP If CRAC, CREAC, IRAC, etc. are still a mystery to you, this is the workshop for you! Professors Nick Herman and Brenda Gibson will be conducting a series of three workshops to assist students with developing better analysis skills. Durham Bar Foundation Adam Lischer Memorial Scholarship Award: Applications Available The Durham Bar Foundation, Inc. is once again offering two $1000 cash scholarship awards to Durham's law students. The purpose of the Foundation's scholarship fund, created in 2003, is to provide financial assistance to residents or natives of Durham County who are attending law school within the state of North Carolina. To date 16 scholarships have been awarded, to students representing most of our NC law schools. The Durham Bar Foundation's Adam Lischer Memorial Scholarship Awards are awarded based on three criteria: connection to Durham County, financial need, and professional/academic achievement. Please note that two letters of recommendation and an academic transcript are required for consideration by the Awards Committee. The application form can be downloaded from our website at www.durhambar.org <http://www.durhambar.org/> , under the Bar Foundation category. The deadline for 2011 applications is Tuesday, March 1, 2011. We anticipate announcing the awards in early April. Award winners will be invited to attend a Bar luncheon in Durham to receive their award. Those dates are April 13 and May 11. Fellow Legal Eagles, Some of HLSA's bilingual members are planning to dine together once a week to practice their Spanish skills, and we invite you to join us. This Monday, Jan. 31, we will meet at El Rodeo at 7 p.m. to share a meal and good conversation. You do not need to be a member of HLSA to come! On January, 19th, The Women’s Law Caucus and Career Services Office presented “the net-iquette workshop” as a part of the Professionalism Series. Speakers were Camille Stell, Director of Client Services at Lawyers Mutual, James C. Dockery, Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources at NCCU and Founder of diverselawyers.com, and Linda A. Spagnola, Assistant Dean of Career Services. Attendees learned that they already have a “brand” and how they can make their brand work for them and their careers. Speakers discussed how to make internet sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn an asset, how they can become a liability and how they can manage to have both a professional and a personal “brand.” Students received the professionalism credit for attending the program. (Limited supply of cups provided) NCCU’s VITA Site Opens More than 50 law students and 8 NCCU undergraduate business and accounting majors have trained as VITA volunteer tax preparers this year! The Law School’s VITA Site is located in the Legal Clinic suite this year. Hours are Fridays from 4:00-7:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Volunteers will prepare and e-file taxes free for individuals with incomes of $49,000 or less in 2010. Call 530-6011 for an appointment or just walk in! NCCU VITA volunteers attended a press conference held Friday January 28th at Durham’s City Hall to promote VITA and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Mayor Bill Bell, County Commissioner Michael Paige, and Congressman David Price spoke about the importance of the EITC and VITA programs to the financial well-being of low and moderate-income families. National Bar Association Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition Students May Now Register for the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition ! Sponsored by: Applications for the the National Bar Association's (NBA) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Competition are now available. The annual competition is designed to motivate high school students to excel in education. The Competition encourages students to express their views on a pre-selected topic and focuses on the ability of the students to communicate orally and in writing. The contest is also designed to give young people experience in public speaking and provides an opportunity for them to obtain some financial support to continue their education. The annual competition is showcased during the NBA's annual convention & exhibits.
