Welcome Wirtgen America Presentation Outline Where we started? The early years Other Manufacturers Where are we going? 1800’s - 1925 1925 - 1975 1975 - 2000 2000 – Today Where we see the Future? Intelligent Compaction (IC) What are States doing? Density or Stiffness? What is Next? Wirtgen America Presentation Where we Started? Road rollers have been around for over 250 years (mid 1700’s) Early 1800’s rollers were made of stone & cast iron and filled with water or stone & pulled with 1 hp. Manufacturing of rollers started in the late 1800’s & early 1900’s Wirtgen America Presentation 1800’s - 1925 Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1800’s - 1925 1832 Volvo is founded by Johan Theofron Munktell 1871 Ingersoll Rand was founded as a Drill Company 1878 Hamm was founded by Anton & Franz Hamm Originally to build Agg. Equipment Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1800’s - 1925 1906 Ingersoll Rand started producing rollers Steam 1911 Hamm produces the world’s first motor-powered road roller Deutz engine (still using today) 1914 Ingersoll Rand starts producing compression-ignition road rollers 1918 Sakai is founded Wirtgen America Presentation 1925 - 1975 Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1925 - 1975 1925 Caterpillar was founded Merger of Holt Manufacturing & C.L. Best Tractor Company Doesn’t get into roller market until later on 1928 Hamm switches exclusively to producing rollers No more Agg Equipment 1929 Sakai starts manufacturing rollers Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1925 - 1975 1932 Hamm develops Allwheel drive & All-wheel steer roller Patented until 1970 Licenses granted to Japan in 1964 (exception) 1934 Dynapac founded in Stockholm, Sweden Based on the acquisition of a patent for vibration of Concrete Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1925 - 1975 Note: First experimental vibratory rollers were developed in the 1930’s Manufacturers at that time considered it to be harmful to the equipment Didn’t relook at vibration for another 20+ years Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1925 - 1975 1946 Dynapac starts production in the USA 1947 Dynapac launches 1st vibratory plate compactor 1953 Dynapac launches their 1st vibratory roller Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1925 - 1975 1956 Hamm develops the static 3-Wheel roller 1957 Bomag was founded BW 60 1st hand guided roller with double vibration & all drum drive 1962 Bomag BW 200 is 1st rideon roller w/double vibration & all drum drive Still see some today Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1925 - 1975 1963 Hamm develops allwheel drive & all-wheel steer pneumatic roller 1972 Hamm develops the Allwheel roller with double vibration 1973 Bomag introduces the BW211 1st single drum soil compactor Wirtgen America Presentation 1975 - 2000 Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1975 - 2000 1976 Sakai introduced rollers into the USA 1978 Sakai come out with light compact line 1979 Bomag introduced the BW100AD Articulated tandem roller Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1975 - 2000 1983 Hamm develops oscillation (31 yrs. Ago) Caterpillar starts building rollers Bomag introduces the Small box – BTM 01 Tarrameter Made it possible to control compaction during rolling 1996 Bomag introduces Variomatic Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 1975 - 2000 1998 Hamm introduces 1st HD series tandem asphalt rollers 1999 Hamm is purchased by the Wirtgen Group 2000 Hamm develops 3000 series single drum soil compactors Replacing 2000 series Wirtgen America Presentation 2000 - Present Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 2000 - Present 2001 Bomag introduces Asphalt Manager Optimal compaction & control on Asphalt Sakai introduces 3 unique concepts in rolling High Frequency rollers / 4000 vpm Track driven vibratory roller – CV550 Vibratory pneumatic roller Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 2000 - Present 2003 Bomag introduces Polygonal drum Deep soil compaction 2006 Hamm redesigns compact HD line of rollers 2007 Hamm introduces HCQ Hamm Compaction Quality Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 2000 - Present 2007 Sakai introduces oscillation rollers (24 yrs. after Hamm) 66” drum machines Dynapac becomes member of Atlas Copco Group Ingersoll Rand is purchased by Volvo 2008 Hamm introduces the new HD+ tandem roller Wirtgen America Presentation Rollers 2000 - Present 2010 Hamm re-designs pneumatic roller More state-of-the art design 2013 Bomag introduces Tango compaction (oscillation – 30 yrs. After Hamm) Hamm introduces new Hseries single drum soil rollers Re-designed from 3000 series Tier IV technology Wirtgen America Presentation HISTORY Wirtgen America Presentation Where we see the Future? Wirtgen America Presentation Wirtgen America Presentation Hamm Intelligent Technology Wirtgen America Presentation Hammtronic Fuel Saving Fuel Saving afety Fuel Saving Fuel Saving Safety Safety Profitability Profitability Safety Profitability Fuel Savin Fuel Saving Safety Profitability Safety Safety Safety Profitability Wirtgen America Presentation Sa Oscillation Vibration Oscillation Wirtgen America Presentation Hamm Compaction Quality Wirtgen America Presentation Intelligent Compaction Wirtgen America Presentation Why Intelligent Compaction? Shortcomings in the Compaction Process… Limited “On The Fly” Feedback Over or UnderCompaction Can Occur Wirtgen America Presentation Sampling Coverage 1 / 1,000,000 100 % Coverage Wirtgen America Presentation Practical example: Counting of passes 1-3 passes Up to 13 passes Consistency Up to 15 passes 1 pass Passes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 >8 Wirtgen America Presentation HCQ System Difference between earthwork and soil Bearing capacity % Wirtgen America Presentation HCQ-GPS Compaction Degree Stiffness is not the same as compaction degree! (% Density) Wirtgen America Presentation HCQ-GPS What are other States doing? Wirtgen America Presentation FHWA - EDC Wirtgen America Presentation Other IC FHWA Projects 2012 2013 2014 Wirtgen America Presentation Summary We have come a long way single horse stone rollers Static 3-wheel rollers Tandem vibration rollers Pneumatic rollers Oscillation rollers Intelligent rollers???? Why IC? QC Tool Consistency Permanent Record FHWA More consistent product Overall Benefit: Combining current technology Improved Pavement performance! Wirtgen America Presentation Thank You Wirtgen America Presentation
