Philip Wadsworth
Philip Wadsworth has
been creating art from
childhood on anything
resembling a canvas.
Primarily, he is self
taught. He has been
living in Crescent City
for six years and has a
large studio above the
Harbor Gallery. Philip
constructs and paints a
vast variety of new
work, which runs from
traditional to wild with
some being marvelously
decorative.

Artist of the Month
Smokey Bill has been known by that
name for so long that most people in this
county don’t realize that Bill Harper is
the same person. That’s probably due to
the fact that he got the nick-name in such
a public way. He spent about 5 years
barbecuing beef in front of Safeway 3
days a week, and was so popular people
were planning their dinners around him.
“Smokey”
Bill Harper
Smokey has a good, solid photography education, including film
developing, from classes taken when he lived in Southern California.
The funny thing is he learned them backward. Due to a registration
mix up, he found himself doing dark-room work before he really knew
how to use a camera. But he feels it has given him a deeper insight for
how to achieve the results he wants in a photo. He loves to capture the
texture in things as opposite as old wood and bright flowers.
The first photo competition he entered was in our county fair in about
1993, where he won first place, and he has been winning prizes ever
since. He won 3rd place in our gallery’s last photography show.

What a great event!
The people who organized this one really thought of everything. From set up to clean up, every detail was
thought through and carried out perfectly. It was also the best attended gallery Christmas party I can remember.
Even the rough weather outside didn’t seem to alter the cheerful mood inside. Thank you, Bunny Phillips and
husband Ed, Hank and Muriel Northrip, Donnetta Summers, Cheryl Anderson, Darlene and Bill Sanchez,
Carol Systrad, Rich and Maida Redder, and everyone who brought such lovely food to share and first class gifts
for the exchange, and all the impromptu helpers who made it happen.

Footnote: Thank you Audi Stanton for the use of your new abstract paintings as a background in these Christmas pages,
and Bunny Phillips for her submission of many of the photos used here.
