Tilsatec - Where It All Began
3
Tilsatec started life as a technical division of Sirdar Spinning Limited based in West Yorkshire, England. The company has been
on the same site since 1890 manufacturing yarns for a number of different applications.
With 135 years of experience there isn't a lot the company
doesn't know about yarn and textiles manufacturing, so it was a logical diversification to move into producing high performance technical
yarns for PPE. The Rhino proprietary yarn technology
was designed to deliver a step change in cut resistance performance in a cost effective hand protection solution. In 2006 Tilsatec was
awarded the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in the Innovation
category for the successful development and commercialization of the Rhino yarn and subsequent range of hand and arm protection.
Tilsatec North America - Locations
Tilsatec serviced the US automotive and metal stamping
industries experiencing rapid growth in the early years. In 2008 Tilsatec North America was established in Ontario, Canada to offer North
American based sales support and distribution. In 2012
Tilsatec North America restructured its operations establishing a Headquarters in the USA and realigning the two regional distribution
centers in the US and Canada to offer customers a fast,
readily available inventory and prompt delivery service.
Eupora - A History of Glove Making
In 2015 Tilsatec North America acquired a dedicated manufacturing and
warehousing facility in Eupora, Mississippi. It made perfect sense for
Tilsatec to take this site on as it has a long and rich history of glove making.
Originally built in the 1940’s by Wells Lamont the factory has seen a lot of
gloves produced since that time and we intend to continue this legacy in the
next phase of Tilsatec’s growth and expansion. Part of this legacy is being
able to retain the skilled workers who have been at the site for many years
which is something we’re very proud to be able to do supporting the local
community.

manufacture more products in house and offer customers a different way
of specifying their PPE requirements. It is now possible to select from a
number of finishes and styling options such as cuff length and type, thumb
reinforcements, additional labelling and branding so your hand protection
is designed exactly the way your workforce need it.

Cut and Sewn: All of the Tilsatec leather range and many of the Knuckleguard range are made from leather and
constructed in this way. Generally these are made from either a Keystone or Wing thumb cut pattern.
The unique Rhino steel core yarn forms the base of most Tilsatec cut resistant products. Developed using proprietary yarn
Bonded: The Cut-Chem™ range is constructed from a seamless knitted cut resistant gauntlet style glove which has a neoprene
technology in house, Rhino yarn delivers the highest levels of cut resistance, which is further enhanced with the addition of
layer bonded either to the outside or inside depending on the style.
high performance coatings or leather reinforcement to produce products that can protect in even the most demanding working
environments.
Coating Types / Finishes
As Tilsatec manufactures the Rhino yarn in house we are able to react quickly to market changes and customer requirements
developing bespoke high performance products to short lead times. It also allows us to ensure the highest levels of quality
control and testing at all stages of the manufacturing process and pass on all important cost savings to end users.

Thumb Styles
Keystone: An inset thumb on full leather gloves. Keystone thumbs provide enhanced wearer comfort.
Straight: A thumb that usually falls straight with the index finger. This style is commonly seen in leather palm gloves.
Wing: A glove construction that positions the thumb diagonally across the palm. Wing thumbs are used on certain styles to
improve wearer comfort.
Reversible: A reversible style enables the glove to be worn on either hand (ambidextrous).
Glove Construction
Seamless Knitted: The majority of gloves in the Tilsatec Rhino and General Purpose Hand Protection ranges are a seamless
knitted liner constructed from our Rhino cut resistant yarn or a natural yarn fiber. Seamless knitting provides a better fit and
eliminates seams which can be uncomfortable for the wearer.
Dipped: All products in the coated range are seamless knitted liners which are dipped on a hand mold into a polymer
solution of either nitrile, polyurethane or latex. The polymer used will affect the level of abrasion, cut and puncture resistance the
glove offers.

ANSI/ISEA Standards
Cut Resistance
ANSI/ISEA 105: 2011
Two test methods are used for the determination of cut resistance:
ASTM F1790-97 - uses CPP test device
ASTM F1790-05 - uses CPP or TDM test device
The force required for material cut through using these methods is classified in the table below:

European Standards
CE Marking System
The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive (89/686/EEC) is written to ensure all PPE meets common standards of quality and
performance and is categorized to enable safety professionals to match the PPE to the level of risk or hazard identified. Protective gloves
which are classified as PPE must be CE marked and comply with relevant EN standards (described below).
The PPE Directive specifies three classes of gloves for different levels of user risk; ‘minimal’, ‘intermediate’ and ‘mortal or irreversible’.
Simple design - minimal risk
Gloves which may be used in low risk situations such as gardening gloves or cleaning gloves. Manufacturers are permitted to
test and certify gloves themselves - gloves of simple design are CE marked as follows:
ANSI 105: 2011
4
Intermediate design - intermediate risk
Gloves which may be used to protect against intermediate risks such as mechanical protection gloves providing cut, puncture and abrasion
resistance, must be subjected to independent testing and certified by a notified body.
Only approved bodies may issue a CE mark, without which the gloves may not be sold. The name and address of the Notified Body must
appear on the instructions for use that accompany the gloves. Gloves of intermediate design are CE marked as follows:
CUT
ANSI/ISEA 105: 2016
A new revision to the standard was published in February 2016 with a new test method F2992-15. This method is similar to ASTM F1790-05 but
only specifies use of the TDM test device and requires a larger number of samples to be tested with a modification to the statistical interpretation
of results. The classification of cut resistance levels also changes and will now include 9 ANSI levels of cut protection. To enable customers to
understand and differentiate between the old and new ANSI cut levels a letter 'A' will be published in front of the new ANSI test results.
A comparison of the old ANSI levels to the new 2016 levels is shown in the table below:
CAT II
Complex design - irreversible or mortal risk
Gloves which are designed to protect against the highest level of risk e.g. chemicals, must be tested and certified by a Notified Body.
The quality assurance system used by the manufacturer to guarantee homogeneity of production must be independently checked. The body
carrying out this evaluation will be identified by a number which must appear alongside the CE mark. Gloves of complex design are CE marked
as follows:

Results obtained using the TDM test device according to ASTM F1790-05 (ANSI/ISEA 105: 2011) and ASTM F2992-15 (ANSI/ISEA 105: 2016)
are expected to be similar but are not a direct conversion.
Other Changes
ASTM F2878-10 - Hypodermic Needle Puncture Resistance
As of 2016 the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard has been updated to include this test which uses a 25 gauge needle to determine the force required for
a hypodermic needle to penetrate protective clothing/materials.

Two different test methods exist for the characterization of antistatic performance according to EN 1149-5.
Under the 2003 standard, blade cut resistance is determined using a Coup test device and the number of cycles measured to produce a cut
through with a rotating circular blade and fixed load. To improve the accuracy and reliability of cut test data, CE certification bodies currently
recommend that when gloves providing high levels of cut resistance (EN388 level 4 and 5) are required, the ISO 13997 test should be
considered. This test is performed on a TDM machine and the cut index is calculated based on the force necessary to produce a 20mm cut
while a straight blade is moving across the fabric. The cut load is expressed in Newtons.

The TDM used in ISO 13997 is the same device as specified in ASTM F1790-05 and F2992-15 and results from all three methods should
be similar. The EN388 standard is currently under revision and a 2016 edition of the standard is expected later in the year. The revision will
incorporate a fifth letter to the pictogram to specify levels of cut resistance obtained using only the ISO 13997 method. The revised levels are
expected to harmonize with those in ANSI/ISEA 105: 2016.
In future, European test results will be displayed as shown below with a letter indicating the level achieved on the ISO 13997 test:

EN 1149-1: Test method for measurement of surface resistivity.
A specimen is placed on an insulating base plate and an electrode assembly placed on top. A Direct Current (DC) potential is applied and the
resistance of the fabric is measured. This test determines the resistance over a short distance and is most appropriate for materials for which
the electrostatic behaviour is based on surface conductivity. Materials must record < 2.5 x 10(9) ohms to meet the requirements of the standard.
EN 1149-3: Test method for measurement of charge decay.
A specimen is charged by an induction effect. The induced charge on the test material influences the field that is observed by a probe
positioned above the test surface. The decrease in field charge is used to determine the half decay time and the shielding factor of the material. A
half decay time of < 4 seconds or shielding factor of > 0.2 are required to meet the conditions of EN1149-5 using this test method.
EN374: 2004 - Protection from Chemicals
The Chemical pictogram is used for air and liquid proof gloves that have a breakthrough time > 30 mins for at least 3 chemicals from the
list below. A,K,L represents the code letters for 3 of these chemicals for which the glove obtained > 30 mins breakthrough time.

The Flex 5L™ is our seamless 13 gauge glove with a wrinkled latex
coating to the palm and fingers. Combined with high cut resistance,
the latex wrinkle coating provides excellent grip in wet (water)
applications. Designed to maximise grip, the coating channels surface
liquid away to ensue safe handling even in the most tactile applications.
Additionally, the latex coating provides a good level of puncture
resistance for handling sheet materials and splintered pieces.

The TTP095HV neoprene gauntlet is designed for use in applications where
liquid and chemical protection is the primary requirement rather than
protection from cuts and lacerations. The outer neoprene is in hi-vis orange
for when the wearer needs to be seen and is also food approved for use in
contact with all food groups.
Cut-Chem™ is an innovative new glove that delivers level 5 cut
resistance, level 4 puncture resistance and chemical and liquid protection
in one powerful solution. The neoprene outer provides protection against
a broad range of chemicals and is certified to EN374: 2004.
The black neoprene gauntlet is designed for use in applications where
liquid and chemical protection is the greater requirement than protection
from cuts and lacerations. Where cuts are the greater risk the reserved
neoprene TTP095R would be more suitable.
