A brighter year ahead
Welcome to our first F4W Newsletter of 2014! As the
UK’s economy continues to improve, we are all
looking forward to a brighter year than for some time.
There are some excellent collections being launched
this spring to tempt home decorators to give their
homes a fresh new look using wallcoverings, and this
issue highlights some of the latest ranges now being
introduced by the nine Fashion4Walls suppliers.
F4W designers look at key decor trends for the season ahead on
pages 3 to 5, and there’s a reminder that in six months it will be time
once again for the next Fashion4Walls show at the Hilton Manchester
Deansgate on September 4, 2014 – a date to put in your diaries now!

ARE DECOR SHOPS BENEFITING FROM PEOPLE MOVING OR IMPROVING?
Property sales grew at their fastest rate for 10 years in the six months to September 2103, according to a recent report by Lloyds Bank, highlighting
the North, West Midlands and Wales as hot spots joining London. Here retailers in and around these areas comment on business so far this year.

I am very positive about 2014
– it’s started very well for us,
although we had a good year last
year. It’s helped that we haven’t
had any snow so far. Heavyweight
vinyls are selling well for us - they
are good value and it’s good
margin business. While I think we
are slightly benefiting from the
increase in house moves, I believe
a lot of our sales are to home
decorators in the ‘don’t move,
improve’ category.”
We have been quite busy, and
with the milder winter people have
been able to travel easily from a
wide area to our store. Because
we offer such a large choice it’s
difficult to say what is selling best,
but we always do well with the
more high-end wallcoverings
such as Italian vinyls. I think our
customers are mainly buying
wallcoverings to improve their
homes rather than because they
are moving.”
People round here are mainly
extending their homes rather than
moving, and we are benefiting
from this - as long as they don’t
just use us as a library. About 80%
of our business comes through
word of mouth recommendations.
We’re here to help, and customers
appreciate our specialist advice
and service. We have a very big
selection of wallcoverings, and I’d
say the majority of customers are
looking for something special.”
So far 2014 has started fairly
well for us, and hopefully it will be
a good year. It’s mainly the better
quality designs such as Italian
vinyls that we do well with. More
people are using wallpaper now,
but a lot don’t really know what
they want, and they like to come
into the shop to get our advice.
On the internet side, certain
people are still crucifying prices,
and it’s stupid. I don’t know what
can be done to change it.”

The trends we are
seeing fall into two
groups: nostalgia for
past happy times, and a look forward to
a technology-rich future. Nostalgic
reminders persist, ranging from revitalising
crafts, Victorian-style distressed roses
and textures to romantic lace. Up-cycling,
reinvention and renovation are influences
also coming through in a strong trend that
has its roots in nostalgia.
‘Fifties retro/Scandinavian styling
with soft textured geometric patterns and
motifs captures a simpler, uncomplicated
lifestyle. Colours are bright yet calming
naturals, plus sinuous ink-drawn designs
on chalky cream and white grounds.
There is a strong novelty trend using
collectable themes, plus 60’s graphic Op
art, ranging from monochromatic small
geometrics and 3D optical effects to fun,
brightly coloured bohemian, watercolour
floral and tie-dye effects.
In contrast, look out for interesting
rich and glitzy special effects with
metallic inks; exotic styling mixes;
organic, multi-faceted geometrics; and
rich classical designs with new
technological and optimistic twists.

We haven’t stopped since the
year began, but we are always
busy! We kept on going through
the recession, and year on year
business has been fantastic. Our
customers are either improving or
moving, and we’re selling
wallpapers at all price levels. We
have an online presence, but the
shop is our main focus – our
customers like to touch and feel
the products, and they like our
advice. We’re doing phenomenally
well with a fairly new concept
that’s an easy sell - stock murals
to take away in a box at good
price points of £50 retail.”
We’ve had more rain here
than I can ever remember, and
although I know other retailers in
Birmingham and Manchester for
example are doing well, we’ve
really been struggling – we need
some dry days when people can
get out to shop! I also think selling
wallcoverings on the internet is
forcing margins down, and maybe
it will take a few years before
things stabilise. Our store displays
are the mainstay of our business,
and our most successful products
recently are murals – we’ve got
three from Colemans on display,
and that really helps to sell them.”
It’s been a good start to the
year, and last year was good for
us too. We’ve not really felt the
recession: we extended our store
in 2008 and it’s now three times
the size, so it’s difficult to make
direct comparisons on figures. I
think a lot of people are improving
their homes now, and we benefit
from this. Blown vinyls and quality
heavyweight vinyls are going well.
The value of our average purchase
has continued to go up, but I think
wallcoverings are undervalued at
retail prices when you consider
inflation and the big investment in
bringing them to the market.”
While trade for us so far this
year has been steady at best,
local estate agents say they are
having the busiest start to a year
for some time. Although house
moves can take a while to filter
through to decoration purchases,
people have been looking through
our pattern books, which is a
good sign, and we’re planning a
promotion soon that will hopefully
kick-start the spring season.
We’re seeing a move away from
big, bright, bold designs to a
softer look, with more muted
tones complemented by textured
plains, linen looks and weaves.”

2014 highlights a diverse, eclectic mix
of trends, with subtle evolution, not
revolution, and a versatile palette for creating
self-expression.
Key elements: Damasks with depth; clever
use of contrast in shading. Geometric lines are
still in vogue, but muted. Finishes that
encourage touching. Florals remain at the
forefront of design in so many guises,
particularly as large silhouetted prints. Foliage/
trees are also important, and woodland
creatures as we look at nature.
Colours: ruby, peony, cool mint, peacock.
Blue will prove popular from vibrant peacock to
cobalt. Mica/glitter/metallic: accents of jewels
to create stunning visual effects. Use of colour
and diferent techniques to give rooms glamour
and drama.
Stone/wood/concrete/steel effects are
prominent, giving design an edge in grey and
black with accent colours. Quirky elements and
individual design will remain popular as a point
of difference.
Wallpaper goes softer and paler, teamed
with stronger-coloured upholstery: hues are
traditional, chic, muted, or tone-on-tone, with
colours seeming to appear through haze and
sunlight.

The trend for
conversational
designs continues, with
photographic images, contemporary and
vintage themes, and quirky messages with a
positive feeling. Florals are painterly, with
blooms of roses, hydrangeas and pansies
creating a nostalgic look in romantic colours.
Botanical motifs, foliage, wildlife illustrations
and leafy prints complement this look.
Classical and ornamental designs with
coordinating stripes are popular, enhanced with
glitter, glimmer, metallics and textural highlights.
Faux wood, bark textures, stone, marble,
grasscloth, woven and plaited effects in muted
tones all highlight a trend that reflects the
natural environment.
Geometric prints, graphic accents and
colour blocking work alongside ombre stripes,
dip-dye effects, paint splashes and digital
prints. The colour palette ranges through citrus
shades, dusky pastels, pink, grey and lilac, and
also features copper and rose-coloured metals.
The craft trend encompasses hand-crafted
style and techniques, knits and weaves, plus
objects collected from travels, organic materials
and natural finishes with global influences.

The trend for very realistic trompe
l’oeil versions of building materials
such as brick, wood, stone or concrete
continues for spring. And there is a
strong trend for decorating walls with
arrangements of framed art or black and
white photographs. Our Loft trend
reflects both of these, and in some
designs they are combined, with
arrangements of framed photography
and artwork on brick walls to team with
complementary Loft Brick and Painted
White Brick papers.
Nostalgia is another trend that
continues to be popular, and we have
created some brand new designs with a
vintage flair for spring, including Miami

Beach, Summer Days and Travel
Postcards.
Global is an emerging trend, inspired
by the popularity of global travel, and
our latest designs on this theme,
Villagio, Luggage and Terracotta Army
will make great conversation pieces!
We are now starting to see the
nostalgic trend move to more distressed
and decadent decoration, echoing the
furnishings of stately homes. Another
emerging trend is for interesting
textures and the use of clever printing
techniques to create exquisite up-market
embossed effects. There is also a trend
to softer, more muted and feminine
colours, including champagne, taupe and
silver, as well as to rich contrasts such
as royal blue with metallics.

Key spring trends for Belgravia Decor are:
sophisticated colouring, with a focus on
stylish neutral shades from sultry charcoals to
elegant ivory tones. In combination with
luxurious effects such as metallics, mica,
glitter and speciality inks, really interesting
products can be created. This trend lends itself
superbly to our Seriano range of Italian in
register vinyls, working beautifully with the
textural elements to give an added
dimension.
Nostalgia and an eclectic mix of imagery
from yesteryear, toiles and vintage references
evoking bygone times are also key trends,
reflected in our upcoming new wallcovering,
Lizbeth. Soft watercolour motifs fit well with this
theme, and florals continue to be popular. We
are seeing a move towards greater simplicity
of design and colour, introducing a more
sophisticated look and feel.

The strongest trends for spring are: Photographic images: these
continue to be popular on all manner of
home accessories and furnishings, led by
city scenes and icons. As a move on from
black and white scenes, our new Meadow
wallpaper is a great springtime photographic design with a
real depth, similar to a digitally printed mural. Vintage chic: pretty florals, romantic collages and
classical ornaments are strong in home furnishing this year.
Floral designs have a vintage, worn look.
Art attack: There is an exciting trend for modern abstract
art, retro posters, filtered city themes and colour blocking,
perfect for home decorators looking to make a bold
statement and not afraid of using colour to create an
individual look.
Traveller: influenced by culture, travel and holiday
memories, this is a feel-good trend that has taken off, perhaps
as a result of the need for escapism in austere economic
times. Our recently launched Tranquility design is on this
theme, with Buddha, Buddhist chants and oriental detail to
give any room a calm and serene feel.
Woodland fantasy: a back to basics trend that stems
from a desire to simplify our busy lifestyles and bring nature
into our homes to make them cosy and welcoming.
Woodland animals, trees and leaves predominate, as well as
furs, woods and hand knitted and woven fabrics in a natural
and subdued colour palette. Our recent Richmond design
features a pencil-drawn stag’s head plus other woodland
elements within the collage.

Continuing our interviews with F4W suppliers, David
Smith, director of Coleman Bros, answers questions
about the Cheshunt based family-run wallcoverings
distributor founded over 50 years ago

Q: When was Coleman Bros established,
and how would you describe the
development of the company since its
early days?
A: Colemans was established in the early
1960’s, first as a retailer, then as a buying
group, which developed into a wallpaper
wholesaler under the ownership of founders
Les and Ron Coleman. Back then, the
wallcoverings were all UK sourced and
distribution was regional around London and
the Home Counties. The advent of national
carriers such as Securicor enabled Colemans
to develop business all over the UK, and as the
British mills closed or merged we started to
import from Europe as well.
Q: How long have the present directors
worked for the company?
A: Being a family business, the present
directors have all been here since the 1970’s.
When Les and Ron Coleman retired in 1994,
Robert and Ray Coleman and myself took over
the equity of the company.
Q: As one of the few surviving longestablished family-run UK companies
supplying decor products, what do you
attribute your success to?
A: A passion for the product and the ability to
change.
Q: Where are the main sources of the
wallcoverings you offer?
A: Our strongest lines are Italian vinyls from a
variety of mills. We convert some of our own
stock lines from UK and European sources
under the Touch label.
Q: What do you look for when introducing a
new collection, and how many collections
are you offering currently?
A: Quality, innovation and good value. We
currently have over 40 room lot collections plus
various stock offers as well.
Q: What in general are the differences
between your pattern book and stock
collections – for example, price levels and
target market?
A: In Italian vinyls there is some overlap
between stock and room lot business, which is

predominately pitched mid-market. Our target
market is the specialist independent retailer and
their customers.
Q: What innovations or company
achievements are you most proud of?
A: We take it for granted that our customers
can order before 5pm and get their goods the
next working day.
Q: Finally, how do you see the UK
wallcoverings scene today?
A: It seems that the value is gradually being
pushed up. Internet trading is a concern, but
we hope there will be a market for good quality
pattern books that show the tactile qualities of
wallcoverings for some time yet.

Rasch is launching a trio of stylish heavyweight and textured
vinyl sets plus five exciting paste-the-wall collections
Leading Rasch’s spring trio of stock launches,
Palazzo is a classical heavyweight vinyl scroll and
coordinating stripe in a palette ranging from ivory
and taupe to black and cream plus a rich red and
gold option.
There are two new textured vinyl designs:
Sofia, a stylised floral trail with coordinating plains
highlighted by mica and metallic inks in neutral,
red, teal, dove grey and black; and Knightsbridge,
a classic damask with coordinating stripe, both
with glitter highlights. The colour palette includes a
sophisticated grey and neutral combination, grey

Two new ranges for roomlot and stock
trading under the popular Cristiana Masi
‘Made in Italy’ label lead off the spring
launches. Desideria is a range of 53cm
wide heavyweight vinyls patterned with

and Debona is further targeting this
market by extending its offer of on-trend
design themes with two new wallpapers
featuring city scenes. New York City
shows iconic images such as the Statue

with silver mica plus yellow lettering, or

grounds. Paris City, a vintage-style
design featuring the Eiffel Tower, comes

for Elvis Presley wallpapers, and is
launching exclusive designs for spring
featuring the iconic ‘king of rock ‘n’ roll’:
Elvis Collage, a collection of best-loved
Elvis images; Elvis Glitter, with
silhouettes of the star and his signature
in silver glitter on a black ground; and
Elvis Frames, with black and white
pictures and autographs on a white
brick background.
The new Loft collection continues the
trend for realistic trompe l’oeil. Some
designs, such as Britain in Frames and
Manhattan in Frames, combine brick
grounds with arrangements of framed
art or photographs. Loft Brick with
Beam makes an ideal background for
any artwork, and I Apple NY has red
neon letters on the same loft brick wall.
New vintage-style designs include
Miami Beach, a fresh take on Muriva’s

Summer Days, with photographs

latest additions to the Seriano collection
of Italian in register vinyls lead off with
Thai Floral, which has been well
received by stockists and customers
alike. A stunning contemporary trail with
tactile woven and embroidered textures
and a simple couched outline, it comes
in a selection of colourways, plus a
coordinating texture in three shades.
Another recent Seriano addition is
Finezza, a fresh floral with subtle
metallic accents and embossed dahlia
blooms on a trail of scrolling leaves. An
accompanying striated textile effect
works beautifully with all four
colourways.
Rococo, a new contemporary blown
vinyl, features bold modern scrolls
accented by glittering outlines, and
teams with a distinctive cross-hatched
texture. And following the success of
Anastasia, Belgravia is adding two
further contemporary colourways to this
wallpaper collection for spring, Rosalie
and Lizbeth.
Rosalie is patterned with pretty floral
blooms and metallic accents on an
understated trail. The fine detail of the
flowerheads is echoed by the delicate
strie texture of the background and the
companion texture. Lizbeth reflects the
current trend for nostalgia, with a mix of
bygone ephemera brought to life by
metallic detail.
