Origins
Schtung was originally a rock and roll band in New Zealand, formed by Andrew Hagen and Morton
Wilson, President of Schtung Hong Kong. The band became so well known that theatrical and commercial
directors soon asked them to branch out into scoring. And so, Schtung Music was born. (FYI, the word
“Schtung” comes from an old Monty Python sketch.)

Schtung Music - Highlights
Swank, Schtung and Blue Planet
Academy Award winning actress Hilary Swank hosted the official
kick-off for the inaugural Blue Planet Run at the UN. Schtung’s Eddie
Reyes composed 3 scores for television spots and multimedia presentations about the Run, and his work for a 2 minute UN presentation
has won a 2007 Telly Award. The Blue Planet Run Foundation is presenting this initiative, made possible by the support of Dow Chemical,
to raise funds and awareness about the lack of safe drinking water in
impoverished communities around the globe.
Schtung at the UN
Schtung Music provided the score for the original multimedia presentation at the launch of the Blue Planet
initiative in 2006 at the United Nations. FCB Chicago
called on Schtung for its expertise in world music stylings
and Eddie Reyes responded with an African based score
for this visually stunning piece based on elements from
the Dow Chemical “Human Element” campaign you are
seeing all over the networks.
ROKR On!
Ogilvy Beijing, via Notorious 24/7 LA, continued their relationship with Schtung on two remarkable spots. Helmed by legendary
director Kinka Usher and featuring heavy CG and practical
effects, the commercials show the power of the ROKR E6 phone
when used as a video player. Sound design was created by
Andrew Hagen, and spots were mixed at Schtung in mono(!!),
stereo and 5.1 for China and the Asian Market.
Kyle XY... why not!?
ABC Family Network hit “Kyle XY" starring Matt Dallas, visited
Studio B for commentary editorial in preparation for release on
DVD. The premiere episode of Kyle XY was the channel's highest
rated original series premiere. Schtung senior engineer Jim
Watson was in the driver’s seat. Blink Santa Monica produced.
Shaggy Dog
Commentary for The Shaggy Dog, one of the most popular DVD
releases of 2006, was edited and mixed in Studio B by Jim Watson.
With Tim Allen in the lead, the story of a man who turns into a dog
reached number four in the 2006 rental charts.
Sammy Speaks
“The incredible saga of Sammy Davis Jr., one of the all-time most popular entertainers in the world, was the one of the most interesting projects we have undertaken at Schtung”, says CEO Andrew Hagen. “Our brief was to restore and edit
original interviews with Sammy to coincide with the release of a book called
“Photos by Sammy Davis”. It was our pleasure to work with Howard Burkons
and Sammy’s personal biographer, Burt Boyar, on this incredible and valuable
project.” Restoration and editorial was engineered by Jim Watson.
View From a Grain of Sand
Schtung Music composed the score and mixed the feature length documentary film helmed by independent director Meena Nanji. “View
from a Grain of Sand” looks at the lives of three Afghani women over
the past 15 Years. “There were some truly horrific scenes in this film of
women being beaten, maimed, disfigured, executed . It was challenging
to score these moments, but at the same time one is uplifted by their
incredible bravery and tenacity in the most miserable and hopeless circumstances”, said Schtung composer Andrew Hagen.
Masters of Horror
From the greatest horror directors comes this most “horrific” series
from Showtime. Schtung is proud to be recording and mixing the commentaries for Blink Digital on this scariest of projects. Says studio boss
Susanna Kalliomaki, “I usually love listening to the music the boys are
creating, or hearing a mix in process. But with this project there are
blood curdling screams, animals howling - you have no idea! On this
one it’s: Keep the door closed, guys !!”.
Schtung Settles the Score
“Settle the Score” is a new MTV show in which bi-coastal contestants battle with video game remotes to win each others
“bling”. Opening title for the show was composed by Andrew
Hagen, who at one time was crowned the undisputed heavyweight “King of Pong”.
Motorola’s “Beijing Calling”
O&M Beijing's Moto mp3 "Hit Squad" gave face to the "new" China
with unique 15, 30 and 60 second spots centering on the spontaneous
music created by four friends in a cool café in downtown Beijing.
Triggered by a ringtone, a jam session ensues with the friends using
"found sound" items in the café to create their collective groove.
Recorded and mixed at Schtung Santa Monica, the creative team was
composer/mixer Eddie Reyes and sound designer/executive producer
Andrew Hagen.
Raffles and Schtung
To announce the joining together of four great hotel chains under
one banner, Schtung was asked by Raffles to score a four minute
piece for world-wide distribution. “I actually stayed at the original
Raffles in Singapore, which was one of the most famous hotels in
the world, so it was a real treat when I was asked to score this
beautiful DVD, all these years later” said Schtung CEO and raconteur Andrew Hagen.
Dr. Watson Speaks
Schtung has taken the lead in the quest for ever-more-enriching surround sound experiences with the new mono to 5.1 surround matrix
its senior engineer Jim Watson has developed. For a demonstration of
this remarkable new technology call 1-888-SCHTUNG or 310-8285189
Schtung Works Magic with Merlin Stereo to 5.1
The recent DVD release of the highly praised television mini-series "Merlin"
(Lion's Gate) gave Schtung the opportunity to try out a new "audio matrix"
to convert straight stereo to faux 5.1 surround.
"In the past it was difficult to create a realistic surround environment from a
mono or stereo source easily," says Jim Watson. "Now, however, with this new
technology we can do exactly that. We can take a mono or stereo source and
create a convincing 5.1 (or 6.1) surround track without getting into hours and
hours of studio time."
This obviously will provide an opportunity for film libraries, back catalogues,
and owners of older television shows in that it gives them the tools to meet the
consumer's expectations, which is a 5.1. (6.1) DVD. We are able to make older
audio content come alive with the same dynamic and powerful surround
experience as contemporary multi-channel surround mixes - and at a competitive price point.
Schtung can provide:
• Mono or Stereo to 5.1 surround
• Dialogue enhancement
• Audio sweetening/ restoration including Cedar Restoration technology
• Mastering for home theatre
• Stereo encoded Broadcast Master (Domestic and International)
Schtung Remixes the Classic Hits
Recently we've been making quite a name for ourselves
with our Asian-flavored remixes for international artists
such as David Bowie, Blue and Human League.
When asked by Billboard Magazine, the legendary Bowie
said of our remixes of "Let's Dance" and "China Girl, "It
was easy giving the green light to these Asian
remixes. I think they're pretty good."
Schtung Living La Dolce Vita
Schtung Music recently got the opportunity to work on one of Fellini's masterpieces,
"La Dolce Vita," which is getting great reviews. Independent DVD Producer Susan
Ricketts lined up Time Magazine movie critic Richard Schickel, fresh off the boat from
attending a panel at the Cannes Film Festival, to do the two hour forty
seven minute commentary. That's a lot of subtext...
As usual, Susan brings the most fascinating titles for us to work on - such as the controversial "Control Room" documentary and films by directors Robert Altman and
Neil Jordan.
Schtung Scores "The Painting"
Schtung completed music composition and all post-production audio on the feature film "The Painting". Eddie Reyes composed and orchestrated the score which
features acoustic guitar and piano and also showcases a gospel choir along with
soloist Arnold McCuller. Alan Schlaifer provided sound design and Chip
Mullaney mixed the movie in 5.1 at Schtung Studio B. Schtung principal
Andrew Hagen is one of the producers on the film.
Schtung Helps Hero
The Houston Worldfest International presented its Platinum award for creative excellence to "Hero" as best TV commercial. Schtung composer Andrew Hagen and sound
designer Alan Schlaifer got to test their chops on the international trailer for the Oscar
nominated film starring Jet Li and Maggie Cheung. Schtung received the Remi Award
for creative excellence on this project.
"With stunningly beautiful pictures like these, the music came to me very easily. Suffice
to say, it was an honour to work on the project", said Andrew.
Can you say “Seven Seasons of Simpsons”?
DVD Producer John Albarian was all smiles at the recent DVD
Awards, the seventh annual award celebrating excellence in
DVD authoring and presentation. Mr Albarian, a regular client
at Schtung, was the producer of the winning titles in both the
Television Series and Music Production Categories. The event
took place at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in conjunction with the Entertainment Media Expo (EMX). Alan Schlaifer
edited and Dave Dale mixed the commentary for the seventh
season of the "Simpsons". For The Who's "The Kids Are
Alright", Alan created the opening sound design.
Schtung Singapore Upgrades and Relocates
Work is completed, the rooms are working and the Schtung
Singapore Team can relax, or at least be happy! Completing
the new 5.1 surround studios has taken months of planning and
hard work but we can now proudly announce that the doors are
open. Located very near to our existing studios, the new facility is
a complete upgrade to the latest in audio recording technology.
