Dulce spoke on how to care for the plants and how to decorate using these plants. Her program was very informative. She gave away many plants as door prizes. We greatly appreciate our members for volunteering to put on these programs. In June we will meet at the Country Club on the 1st Thursday at 11:00 A.M. Our long time member Lee Breedlove will present a program on house plants. If you have any interest in gardening please join us. Weather during an El Nino year can be unpredictable. Thankfully, we received some much needed rain in early May. As the hot part of the year approaches, continuous weekly rainfall is what we need to prevent a severe fire season. While doing spring chores, please consider removing dead brush from around structures and cleaning pine straw debris from gutters. Soffits should be screened to prevent embers/firebrands from blowing into attics. To learn more about maintaining a Firewise Home, visit and “Like” OUR Wedgefield Firewise Facebook page. We are always looking to expand our volunteer base. The next event for Wedgefield Firewise is the Cattleman’s Breakfast, on June 25th , 6:30 to 10:00 AM. Breakfast is always great and you don’t have to travel far. The Cattleman’s Breakfast is at Highway 50 and 419 in the Tractor Supply parking area. National Arson Awareness was celebrated May 1st through the 7th. This year’s goal was to “Spread the Facts Not the Fire”. FEMA reports that 25% of all Wildland Fires, occurring 2010- 2014 were ruled Arson. Never confront an Arson Suspect, instead, call 911 and relay description of any suspicious activity. We have seen the community respond by dressing up their yards along with better maintenance. If you are chosen the winner for the month you receive a sign in your yard for one month, an article about your yard in the Wedgefield Community News and a $25 gift certificate from Zaxby’s Restaurant. Besides all of this it is an honor for all of your hard work. We judge 8 months out of the year, April through November. Each month we choose a different section of Wedgefield. To qualify your yard must have the following: 1.Grass cut, edged, weed free and good color. 2.Trees and bushes well manicured. 3.Lots of color in annuals, perennials and other shrubs. 4.No artificial plants in your yard. Specific bus information does not come out until late July. What we can tell you for sure is that if you are within a 2 mile radius of the school your child will either be a car rider, bike rider or walker. Everyone further than two miles will receive bus services. We will let you know when the link is current to check your addresses for bus service. Water Concerns Many of you have expressed concerns over the water system in the Wedgefield area. The district has taken the safety and welfare of your students seriously. They have water filters on the pipes prior to the water fountains or bathroom fixtures already installed. They invested in designing an extensive water filtration system for each building to ensure the water is safe for drinking while at our new school. They are reviewing the reports taken by Orange County to help determine the correct design. As we continue to get updated information we will share it with you. Reduced Rate Internet Services If you are in need of internet then this may be for you! They are offering families that qualify a super reduced rate of $5-10 a month for internet services. Are you ready? Orange County and the Office of Emergency Management will hold their annual Hurricane Expo on the 4th of June. This year it will be held on the east side of the county. This event is well worth the drive to the Renaissance Senior Center at 3800 South Econlockhatchee Trail. There will be talks by various experts including WFTV Meteorologist Tom Terry and Emergency Responders as well as Safety Vendors. The Governor’s Hurricane Conference was held during the week of May 8th. Attendees from all over the state were there taking various classes in preparation for the hurricane season. The fact that we have not experienced a hurricane for many years is no excuse for not preparing for the possibility. The theme for the conference was “REBOOT READINESS”, get out of the denial, complacent mode and realize that it’s not “IF” a hurricane can hit us, it is “WHEN”. The results have been passed on to both Commissioner Ted Edwards office & the Orange County Traffic Engineering Department. PAGE 17 The Wedgefield News VOLUME 15 ISSUE 6 NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH REPORT No pursuit, No patrol, No confrontation, JUST WATCH and REPORT. During the last half of APRIL to the present date of MAY 12, 2016 based on Orange County Sheriff’s crime statistics on OCSO web site we have had ONLY ONE reported crime. That was a vehicle stolen on Robinson in the 19500 Block. The golf cart stolen on Mosby was not listed although it was reported. 4357 or 911 depending on the issue and then me at (407) 679-6644. Remember we NEVER OPEN OUR DOOR to someone unless we know who it is and we want to talk with them. If we do not want to talk with them be sure they know someone is home by saying GO AWAY or HARRY GET YOUR GUN even if HARRY does not live with you. Before I discuss the calls I have gotten I am firmly convinced that not all reports are being recorded. We are not seeing the results of reported crimes on the OCSO web site. This could be an effort to keep crime stats down during an election year, making it imperative that I get a call after calling OCSO to report the crime. That is if we are going to have a true picture of our local crime. To report a crime in progress, fire or medical emergency Dial 911 Regarding the calls that I did get: I got two calls about reported auto burglaries one on BAKER in the 2200 Block and one on MAJESTIC in the 20500 BLOCK. In both cases a garage door opener was taken and in one case the garage was entered. I got one call regarding vandalism on ABALONE regarding the egging of a home and the cars in the driveway. I got one call regarding voyeurism and one call regarding suspected drug activity. In each case I referred the caller to the appropriate OCSO number for the deputies to handle. THEN PHIL UNSER at 407-679-6644 (24hrs) Let’s face it we have over ONE THOUSAND residents on the Wedgefield NHW Face Book page WATCHING and REPORTING so there is little that goes on that someone does not see. Now there is a problem, actually two problems, FIRST the reporting of the observed incident and SECOND something being done about what has been reported. Quite frankly we must adhere to what has been promulgated for years and that is a call to OCSO on the appropriate number and then one to me. You are always encouraged to meet with the deputy to be sure that the incident is responded to and not forgotten because of other more pressing problems. Rest assured there is always another pressing problem somewhere in Orange County that can take precedence so we need to be sure the incident is responded to. We do continue to have solicitor issues. I had three reports of AT&T solicitors being rude and in one case providing false information to a specialist that knows the business and the capabilities of the system. Remember, if they act suspiciously or you are concerned by their actions immediately call the non emergency number (407) 836- The number to report suspicious activity or a crime committed Dial 407-836-HELP (4357) After dialing the appropriate OCSO Number PAGE 18 The Wedgefield News VOLUME 15 ISSUE 6 The Yard of the Month Committee for May selected a beautiful yard in the Reserve belonging to Wedgefield newcomers Michael and Anna Fox of 2626 Lyndscape. Michael and Anna moved here in August of 2015. They were very pleased that their yard was selected for Yard of the Month as they have been working hard on it, especially the gardens in front. Anna was quick to say that Michael has done most of the work and she is very proud of what he has accomplished. The first thing you notice as you approach their home is the beautiful magnolia tree in bloom. The back of the garden is bordered by a beautiful row of holly and the front border has several dark green grass-like liriope plants, azaleas and periwinkle with pink blooms for color. There are also croton, several hibiscus and purple ruellia (wild petunia) surrounding a small fountain. They recently planted a small pink bougainvillea to the left of the fountain and a small pineapple in a pot at the edge of the front porch. The wreath on their front door is a nice finishing touch. The Wedgefield Garden Club would like to welcome them to the neighborhood and congratulate them on a job well done. There were several beautiful yards in this area that deserve honorable mention: 2608 Regency Oak Lane has a very beautiful and unusual collection of large container gardens featuring a wide variety of succulents; 2612 Pine Glen Court has a very colorful garden featuring crotons, palm and bamboo; 19627 Knight Tale Lane has a lovely yard with a beautiful vine, several palm trees and a tall evergreen near the front door; 2984 Lyndscape and 19306 Mardi Gras also have lovely gardens, with nicely landscaped and maintained yards.
