Piranha warrants to the original purchaser that the battery tray and battery
and
unit will be free, under normal use and maintenance, from defects in material
to the
workmanship for a period of TWO YEARS from the date of purchase, subject
conditions shown below.

Unless otherwise stated in this warranty, if a complete system is fitted
by Piranha or an authorised agent the standard two year warranty on
the battery tray and battery management unit is extended to FIVE
YEARS. Piranha will repair or replace at its discretion, free of charge
to the original purchaser, the product that is defective in
material or workmanship.

Subject to any terms implied by law, this warranty contains all of the Piranha obligations and any distributor
and the agents, officers and employee of such distributor and of Piranha are not authorised to vary or
extend the terms of the warranty. The benefits conferred by the warranty are in addition to the
conditions and warranties implied by applicable legislation conferring rights upon consumers, which apply
only to the extent which they may not by law be excluded.
Exclusions
This warranty shall not apply to, or include, any of the following:
Ÿ Any defect or failure due to accident, misuse, abuse, relocation to another vehicle, negligence, nonobservance of any of the instructions supplied with the Product on the part of any user, choice of
location, improper installation, configuration or connection to a vehicle with an electrical fault
Ÿ If the Product is installed, repaired, serviced or tampered with by a person who is not qualified, or if
non-approved parts have been fitted
Ÿ Failure to obtain proper maintenance for the Product or any associated equipment on the vehicle
Ÿ If the Product is used other than for any reasonable purpose for which it was manufactured, or is
used in a way not specified by Piranha
Ÿ If the original purchaser sells, leases or otherwise parts with possession of the Product. ie: internet
sales, second hand goods
Ÿ Any freight, packing and insurance expenses relating to transportation of the Product.
Ÿ Any expenses relating to installation and/or removal of the Product.
Ÿ Any damage, indirect or incidental, of whatever nature.
Ÿ Failure to pay for products in full.
Limitations
Piranha is not liable for any consequential, indirect or accidental loss or damage or for any service not
expressly provided herein (including without limitation liability for any loss or damage caused by a fault in
the Product or its external wiring connections) and the liability of Piranha under this warranty is limited to the
repair or replacement of defective material or workmanship by a qualified person, provided such person and
work is approved by Piranha prior to commencement. Subject to Clause 2, Piranha is hereby excluded to
the maximum extent permitted by law from all other liability in respect of the Product.
While Piranha warrants, where applicable, that the Product is free from defects in materials and
workmanship under normal use at the time of delivery. Piranha does not warrant that the Product will meet
any user specific requirements or that the operation of the Product will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Owner Responsibilities
Maintenance of the Product and associated equipment is the responsibility of the owner. The owner must
retain evidence that proper maintenance has been performed on the Product by Piranha or a qualified auto
electrician or electronic technician. Claims made during the warranty term will not be accepted if resulting
from lack of maintenance rather than faulty material and workmanship.
The owner must operate the Product in accordance with all of the Operating Instructions. Upon discovery of
a fault the owner must return the product to the distributor with full details of the nature of the fault.
(Removal of the product must be done by a qualified person to ensure that the warranty remains valid.) A
written report describing the circumstances of failure must accompany the returned Product with proof of
purchase which clearly shows the date of such purchase by the original purchaser.
If the product is found to be satisfactory on return to Piranha we reserve the right to apply a charge for
testing , assembly, reassembly, packing and freight.
In most cases no fee is charged for standard testing.

therefore what physical size auxiliary
battery will fit, and its location.

Why Do We Electroplate Rather
Than Powder Coat?
Batteries by nature are extremely corrosive. They have a high
percentage acid content and under extreme conditions, such as
heat and load, they can give off fumes and weep. The corrosive
effects of acids can destroy metal parts in an incredibly short
period of time, so all metal parts under a bonnet need to be
protected by some sort of coating.
Plastic
Plastic trays resist battery acid but are prone to damage. Heavy
4WD batteries, extreme conditions and the difficulty of bolting the
plastic tray to a metal car body make the likelihood of cracking or
damage extremely high.

Piranha battery trays

for easy reference
and fitting.
Powder Coating provides an efficient barrier between metal and
acids, but it is brittle and can chip or scratch leaving an area for the
acid to penetrate. Once the acid penetrates the surface it travels
between the metal and the powder coating (see insert below) and
literally eats the tray from the inside out.

Electroplating using zinc, is recognised as the most flexible and
reliable method of rust proofing steel. The process uses
electricity to deposit a fine coat of zinc onto the steel. The zinc
bonds atom by atom at a molecular level to provide protection
from corrosion. Piranha uses 8 to 12 microns of zinc with a
yellow chromate conversion to impart a high level of wear and
corrosion resistance.

Piranha battery cradles are made of 2mm thick mild steel with a
thick 8 to12 micron zinc electroplate plus a Chromate Conversion
(gold) electroplated top coat. Accessories for the cradle (body
washers and top mounts etc.) are also electroplated to the same
standards.
This produces a remarkably strong and reliable cradle made to
the highest quality and standards known to man.

THERE IS MORE TO THE CHOICE OF BATTERY THAN YOU MIGHT EXPECT
When choosing a battery style
we can use the analogy of a truck
versus sports car. Both are
motor vehicles but they are
designed from the ground up for
different purposes - just like
battery types.
The type of battery being used is an important factor to
consider when deciding on a battery management system.
Your battery choices can be guided by:
APPLICATIONS
Car Batteries
Starting batteries have 12 - 17 plates per cell giving us a huge
area in contact with the acid, thus giving an enormous capacity to
produce power (CCA) in a rush, but little staying power.
Ideal use - starting motors, light electrical
accessory use and light winch application.
Best features - price (fairly cheap).
Deep cycle batteries may have as little as 4 plates per cell
however the plates are much thicker and denser, therefore the acid
penetrates more slowly, giving a lower CCA but much better
staying power.
4x4 & Truck Batteries
Ideal use - heavy duty starting application,
winching work, light accessory work.
Best features - tough reinforced plates, high
cold cranking amp (CCA) capacity and
reliable starting.
Deep Cycle Batteries
Ideal use - fridge, UHF, CB, HF Radio,
camping lights, inverters, in fact any low
amp drain over a long period of time.
Best Features - long life and can be flattened
many times without significant damage to
plates.
TECHNOLOGIES
HYBRID Batteries
Ideally used for when multiple batteries are
not an option. A new style of battery that
combines some elements of both a starting

Exide batteries are built tough for Aussie conditions. They offer
national warranty, and have proven themselves in harsh 4WD
use. Piranha are proud to use and recommend Exide batteries.
STEP 1
Calculate the ‘watt hours’ by multiplying the loading of each
piece of equipment (this is expressed in watts and is stamped
into the compliance plate attached to the item) by the number of
hours you intend to use it between recharges and then add them
all up.
STEP 2
Determine the ‘Ampere Hour’ (AH) requirement that the battery
must accommodate.
A cable loss margin of 10% is usually appropriate. In addition, it's
nice to have a little more capacity than you need. We recommend
an over-capacity margin of 25%.

If the battery will be needed for vehicle starting, you will need to
increase your Ampere Hour estimate by 50% to ensure you still

Before Electronic Dual Battery Management Systems (which are by far the best
devices to isolate multi-battery systems) there were limited choices for battery
charging and isolation.
Manual isolators are a device that
switches the connection of a battery
on and off.
Solenoid isolators are like a remotely
operated switch. When power is fed
into the switching terminal of the
solenoid, the solenoid is switched on,
allowing the power to flow between
batteries. This allows you to start from
both batteries and winch from both
batteries. The batteries are charged
together in parallel when the solenoid
is switched on. When the solenoid is
switched off the auxiliary battery is
isolated.
The power feed for the solenoid is
usually connected to the ignition
circuit, so the solenoid will switch on
and off with the ignition. You can place
a switch inside the cabin of the vehicle
to manually switch the solenoid off and
on (when the ignition is on) at your
discretion. If you run your auxiliary
battery flat, (for example by using a
fridge for a couple of days and not
running the motor to charge the
battery) there is a danger of flattening
your main battery as soon as you turn
the ignition on. This is due to the large
equalising effect between the batteries.

Problem: Can hide a faulty/flat main
battery.
Note: Solenoids and manual switches
create voltage spikes, therefore they
are NOT recommended on EFI
systems. They are also not suitable for
charging dissimilar batteries.
DIODE ISOLATOR
The diode isolator completely isolates
each battery circuit from the other so
when one battery is used (even if it is
dead) the other, will remain fully
charged.
Diode isolators act as a one way valve
between the two batteries, preventing
current flowing from one battery to
another. Each battery is therefore
isolated and acts as an independent
power source.
Diode isolators have been around for
years, and suit externally sensed
alternators. They are not recommended
for many modern systems.
Diode isolators have a problem, there
is a voltage drop associated with the
use of blocking diodes.
To use a Diode Isolator requires a
modification to original wiring. If the
diode fails there is a complete loss of
your charging system.
Note: Most modern vehicles, EFI or
diesel, now have internally sensed and
regulated alternators that do not suit
diode isolators.
VOLTAGE SENSING
ISOLATORS
In the mid 1980's Piranha
revolutionised isolators with the
introduction of the first Electronic
Isolator (the DBE 100S now
obsolete) which changed the way
Dual Battery systems worked.
Electronic isolators ensure that the
main starting battery is charged
before connecting the auxiliary
battery. It does this by monitoring
the voltage in the main battery.
When the voltage in the main battery
reaches a predetermined threshold,
the isolator switches to charge the
auxiliary battery. It will also disconnect the auxiliary battery from
charging if the main battery voltage
drops below that of another
predetermined threshold. Thus this
system ensures that the main
starting battery is always given
charge priority and therefore the risk
of having a flat main battery is
greatly reduced.
Electronic Isolators have another
advantage; they can be fitted to
many vehicles - diesel, turbo diesel,
petrol carby or EFI with internally or
externally sensed alternator.

In the late 1980's Piranha introduced
the DBE150 - the first with voltage
sensing and current limiting.
In 1992 Piranha released the DBE150Micro. A micro processor (automotive
grade) battery management system.
This removed the need for external
circuit breakers and fuses.
This allowed us to remove trim pots
and manual adjustment making our
units even more reliable. Warranty was
then increased to 5 years*.
The piranha DBE180 now increased
capacity to 180Amp and included direct
input for a solar panel (50W) and direct
output for battery monitors.
Spike and surge protection included.
The cables were attached to the circuit
board ensuring a more reliable
operation and a 2 year unlimited
kilometre warranty was introduced.
SMART ALTERNATORS
What is a smart alternator? How do I know if I have one? Does this affect my
choice of Dual Battery Manager?
A smart alternator is controlled by more than just a voltage
regulator. It is integrated with the vehicle electronics via the ECU
(Engine Control Unit) or BCM (Body Control Module). This
allows input from voltage and temperature senses, to name just
two, which then control the output of the alternator in current
and voltage. By matching the alternator output to the vehicle
load, this reduces the time the alternator is drawing power from the
motor and thereby reduces fuel and emissions.
Vehicles fitted with smart alternators will show low voltage output via the volts gauge with
occasional intermittent bursts of voltage up to 14.6 Volts. This can also be checked by a
workshop. This means that a standard wet cell second battery connected via a standard
management system will charge but an advanced technology battery, like AGM, Calcium,
Gel etc. may not. A smart alternator with a C-Bus may allow the use of a standard
management system.
For efficiency and faster charging a standard management system will provide a better
solution than a DC/DC but if there is no alternative, a DC/DC still allows an auxiliary battery
to be fitted. Alternatively there are aftermarket products available to “tweak”the output of
the smart alternator to produce the constant voltage and hence use a standard battery
management system. These can affect your new car electrical warranty as many other
aftermarket accessories can.
So what can I do if I have a Smart alternator and cannot fit a standard Dual Battery
Management system?
• Use the same technology battery as the factory supplied unit for your auxiliary deep cycle.
• Install a DC/DC charger, it will charge but at a much lower rate, hence take longer to
charge.
• Over ride the smart alternator with an aftermarket products with the caution it could affect
vehicle warranty.

What is DC/DC?
This is a device like a transformer that
steps up DC volts from say 13.6V to
14.4V. Typically a rate of 10, 20 or 40
amp capacity. It is used when the
alternator output volts are too low to
charge say an AGM battery or to
overcome voltage drop for an auxiliary
battery located in a trailer or van with a
long cable length. They can also be
used to overcome low volts due to the
use of a "Smart" alternator (see note).
The disadvantage is the reduced
charging amps and the relatively higher
cost. The reduced amps is a result of
operating in high temperatures and the
losses incurred by stepping up the
voltage. Like a hose with a nozzle, you
increase the preassure but reduce the
flow rate.

THE SECRET REVEALED!

allowing sufficient charging current to the auxiliary battery. The earth
lead is critical to correct operation.
To optimise your electrical storage system so as your free camping
experience is not ruined by electrical issues there are a number of
basic preventive measures to look at.
Next, your connections, use correct diameter automotive grade cable
to suit the application. For example, 6mm squared for fridge &

while winch cable can be 35mm squared. When using plugs ensure the
correct plug is used, a quality Anderson plug of the correct amperage
for delivering battery power and merrit sockets and plugs for

fuses and manifold connected fuse boxes for accessories to protect
each line and most importantly the

Charging is crucial to the operation of
the entire system, and whether you

battery monitor and if required combined battery protector to maximise

sheets make sure you are familiar with the system, how it works , any
maintenance and fault diagnoses.
Finally, all your electrical
accessories will only work
properly if correctly earthed. This
always seems to be left as an
afterthought but is absolutely
essential. Solid earth means using
correct diameter cable, scratching
back surfaces to get bare metal. Make sure if using body earth, body is
earthed to chassis and chassis is earthed to block back to MAIN
battery. Many of our modern cars have anti vibration mounts of rubber
between major body connections

DBE180-SX
INTELLIGENT DUAL BATTERY MANAGEMENT
The DBE180-SX Electronic Isolator is a 180 Amp unit with full
spike/surge protection and solar input to charge the axillary battery.
With a plastic/Nylon case, sealed relays and special coatings to resist
corrosion and water damage, this is the toughest isolator Piranha (or
anyone) has ever built!
The DBE180-SX disregards the need for externally mounted low-tech
circuit breakers, which are inaccurate, and often don't blow quickly
enough. Our electronic current limiting solution makes internal failure
due to overload practically impossible.
PROTECTION - VPF
• Vehicle Protection Function (VPF) is a feature unique to Piranha
DBE Series Intelligent Isolators. You need VPF to protect your
vehicle by shutting down charge to your auxiliary battery if there is
a fault situation like:
- Damaged auxiliary battery
- Bad cable connection - earth
- Overload or other serious condition.
If this occurs you need to rectify the problem, reboot the system and
you are safe

The "VPF" function is there to protect your vehicle electrics and may indicate
• Auxiliary battery has developed a fault
• Either the auxiliary battery earth or the DBE180 earth has been compromised,
check and redo earths.
After rectifying problem, reboot the DBE180 by disconnecting power in and out and
disconnect small earth and ignition wire. Wait 10 minutes and reconnect. Unit will
reboot and go to green.

The DBE140S Electronic Isolator offers most of the important
features of the DBE180S. This unit has been redesigned, upgraded,

Piranha's Advanced Digital Turbo Timer incorporates a
digital volt gauge to monitor the vehicle's charging system.
It also allows you to adjust the a low/high audible voltage
warning.
But wait there's more! This Turbo Timer is designed to
allow the engine and turbo temperature to stabilise after
driving by programming the engine to run at idle for a predetermined time.
This allows the oil to circulate through the turbo during the cooling process. If
the engine is switched straight off the oil can crystallise in the turbo from high
temperatures and eventually cause damage to the turbo itself.

Adding a fridge slide or draw system is now made easier by first
putting in your reasonably priced floor as the base to work from.
Laser cut for precision and picking up on existing factory bolts make
installation a breeze and very quick.
"While in the workshop I watched one of our fitters cutting up a sheet
of 8x4 ply with a jig saw to fit the rear of a 120 Prado. On further
investigation I then added up the time to source the ply, cutting,
sanding and drilling holes so they lined up with vehicle anchor points.
This all came to $85 for the ply and 2.16 hours to process, $297.
There had to be a better way!
Laser cutting multiple sheets with CAD programs was the answer and
now you can have a floor that fits in minutes at a fraction of the cost!!"

When climbing hills, fit the chains to the rear wheels because due to
gravity 70% of the whole vehicle weight is transferred to the rear. With
the additional grip of the chains, you will keep mobile and steady. If
you're going downhill, fit the chains to the front wheels, but if you're
covering all conditions then chain-up all four wheels. Protection of the
environment is paramount and driven intelligently, a chain-equipped
vehicle will cause less track damage than one without chains.

contactor pack is a great upgrade replacement for solenoids that have
died. It offers a reduced size and higher amp hour capacity. More
power amps to the winch motor and almost waterproof. It is easy to
mount in the bullbar or under the bonnet, as it is much smaller than a
conventional solenoid pack.

PIRANHA BREATHER KITS
For diffs, gear box, transfer box (transmission).
A standard diff breather allows for expansion, as the diff heats
up, a one way valve allows hot air out of the diff. If the
transmission cools quickly, (ie. a water crossing) the air inside
contracts like it's "taking a breath" Air cannot get in via the
standard breather so it now takes the line of least resistance past the oil seals,. This is OK but if they are under water the diff
sucks in water. (oil seals are designed to keep oil in, not water
out) Piranha diff breathers allow for easy access for air in and
out, they are a snorkel for your 4WD transmission.
