I am really proud to present the first EU project awarded to our organization. The
on-going 2014-2020 EU programme has a continuous action which funds sport
within the Erasmus+. This demonstrates the strategic importance of sport in
achieving the prominent European goals of intelligent, sustainable and inclusive
growth. In this context, being the principal Italian Body for Sport Promotion, we
are contributing concretely through an ambitious and expensive project which
aims to involve disabled and able-bodied athletes in a great day of integrated
sport.
I clearly recall that several members of other sport promotion bodies would smile
politely when, some years ago, our technicians began to speak about integrated
sport. I remember their skepticism at the idea of spreading this new social form of
sport in schools and sport centers. Today I am glad to see that so many people
have understood this new groundbreaking role which sport can play in achieving
integration. Therefore they have now accepted the challenge of organizing
integrated sport events. For all of us, sport is synonymous with wellbeing, social
inclusion, socialization and it is an essential part of our creating a Europe which is
more inclusive and more sensitive to individual needs. We welcome any new
initiatives you may have in helping us in this endeavour. In this EDIS project we
have involved 16 organizations from 12 European countries and our objective is to
lay the foundations of the rules regulating European integrated sports. May 2015
is a milestone in Italy and the whole of Europe since over 2,000 athletes both ablebodied and disabled will be on the move to participate in the first European Day of
Integrated Sport taking place in 12 Italian towns. Therefore I really must thank
our Local managers, Regional CSEN presidents who -for the last three years- have
accepted to be involved in the integrated sport project by holding two national
editions of this event and who are now about to host the European delegations.
We are very proud of our wonderful achievement: having obtained EU funding for
an Italian initiative, thus creating new opportunities for European sport. We want
to share our success with the entire Italian sporting world and we want to thank
our friends Giovanni Malagò and Luca Pancalli for all their help. They have played
a huge role in supporting this great integration project.

Sport as a universal language capable of unifying beyond all types of diversity. A
very effective message to spread through a historic event, the first “European Day
of Integrated Sport”. This is a great achievement and acknowledgement for the
CSEN which has been entrusted with the organization of this event by the
European Union which clearly desires to promote an educational plan for the
acceptance and social integration of people with disabilities through sport. It is an
achievement that makes our movement proud and rewards the Body for
Promotion (=CSEN) for all its efforts and activity in promoting the values which lie
at the basis of any sport. Twelve Italian towns are involved together with 16
organizations and 12 actively participating countries. There are competitions in
and demonstrations of 10 sport disciplines characterized by mixed teams of
disabled and able-bodied athletes and with the participation of Italian and
European champions. It embodies an integration model which overcomes all
differences, a civic and cultural testimony that makes sport a unique tool for
uniting peoples. At the same time, sport is an invaluable opportunity for young
people, an extraordinary collective resource that counters prejudices and builds a
bridge connecting different cultures. A better future is reflected by the spread of
sound didactic, ethical and educational principles and our movement is a
formidable example of this need. It is able to combine physical activity and human
development. It develops minds and souls and frees them to think positively.
Through the fostering of a team spirit it is a winner and is always to be seen as a
form of realistic competitiveness which aims for continual improvement. I do
believe that this first "European Day of Integrated Sport” will be an excellent
example to be followed and repeated in the future for the high principles to which
it aspires. On behalf of the National Olympic Committee I sincerely welcome the
organizers and all participants in the certainty that - thanks to the efforts of
everyone concerned - this event will contribute to spreading a model of
competitive sport for all and belonging to all. This is a winning model for the
development of a new sports culture.

It is a pleasure to inaugurate the first European edition of the Day of Integrated
Sport that will be held on 23rd May 2015 at the same time in 12 Italian towns with
the participation of 12 European countries: after two successful national editions,
this time the event is under the aegis of the European Union thus emphasising the
strategic value of sport integration policy, capable of sowing the seeds of the
cultural and social growth of a country. This time the CSEN will have to network
with 12 other international realities which are very different from one each other
as regards characteristics and sensibilities. Thus, this edition of the Day of
Integrated Sport will be a celebration of integration at several levels. Sport, which
can be defined as a powerful force for multicultural exchanges and relationships,
can easily become an ideal link, a connecting thread that unifies and favours the
development of society. The Italian Paralympic Committee is well aware - thanks
to its everyday activities- that sport and integration are two sides of the same
coin, a coin that rewards and welcomes everyone. This is the message that you
will give in the 12 Italian towns where you will be the organizers and hosts of a
sports celebration open to all. The CSEN, which has been a point of reference for
sports associations in Italy for several years, knows how to really carry out the
promotion of educational sport, and how to spread its mission as a training
agency, especially in schools, among children and youth. Young people are by
definition looking for positive role models and the full integration model of peers
with disabilities in a game, in a competition or in a challenge with 2 people, is
indeed a real and concrete model of reciprocal growth, an incentive to recognize
and accept different and special abilities. You cannot miss the 23rd of May: you
will show how it is possible “to be a team” in 10 integrated sports disciplines; and
so will another 16 European sports organizations: a great transnational project is
expecting you, a project bound to leave a legacy wherever it is held, as do all the
projects promoted and supported by the European Union, which always has
great and ambitious, long term, development objectives. By embracing the cause
of integrated sport, Europe fuels a need felt by every socially developed country:
the need to become ever more developed, also by changing its negative
perception of disability.
Thus, it is your turn to play a vital role in keeping the name of sport high. Sport
must have neither prerequisites nor be discriminatory, but it must be an
opportunity offered and guaranteed to each and every one of us.

A report on the day
The story I am about to tell you is not taken from some movie or some fantasy book. The characters of
this story are real, they live in Europe today and they meet for the first time in Italy on May 23rd at the
European Day of Integrated Sport.
What they have in common is that they regularly do some kind of sport. Sport is the reason they are all
here today, because it creates communication, relationships, social interactions and inclusion between
people even those with different abilities and from different cultures, as it does today. Actually, some of
them do already know one another as is the case for the Italian athletes who have already had the
opportunity to experience integrated sport on several occasions.
For example, there is Flavia - a 20-year-old girl who lives in the mountainous Valle d'Aosta Region with
her parents and there is Giorgio, a boy of the same age, who lives on the Adriatic coast in Pescara. It is
obvious they really like each other and they are always the first to sign up for any upcoming sport
competitions and events.
As well, Flavia and Giorgio's parents really enjoy watching disabled and non-disabled athletes compete
together on the same playing field while testing a new sports model which makes it possible for
athletes with different physical and mental abilities to do so.
There has been a lot of work behind today's event. It all started around a dinner table one April day,
several years ago. It was the closing dinner of a project where sport technicians and social workers had
played a football match together with young disabled athletes for the first time.
After this experience, the CSEN (National Educational Sport Centre) came up with the European Day of
Integrated Sport which, thanks to funding from the European Union, transformed a dream into reality:
a mutual enrichment that can only derive from enormous diversity, the meeting up of people from
countries with very different histories and characteristics, a get-together of people of different ages,
backgrounds, ways of thinking who all share the same desire to face new challenges, have new
experiences and develop new ideas.
On May 23rd, at 10 a.m. the games of the European Day of Integrated Sport are officially opened
simultaneously in 12 Italian towns. Above the heads of the crowd the European flag is lifted into the air
by colourful balloons which will take it who knows where…
While the flag floats slowly up, the band in Rome plays the Ode to Joy and these images reach the other
venues via streaming, despite a storm hitting the streaming centre.

Sindy's parents in Lefkada (Greece), Šarūnas's in Kaunas (Lithuania), Javier's University friends at
Tarragona (Spain), and many others are connected via the Internet and they are all waiting to see their
athletes when the different towns are connected in turn.
From Rome, the CSEN President officially kicks off the European Day of Integrated Sport while the
public starts clapping. Standing next to the CSEN President there is the General Secretary of the Italian
Olympic Committee who insisted on being here.
Next we are connected to Sennori, a small village in Sardinia where the Mayor enthusiastically greets
everyone on line in the local dialect. In the background we can see some horses as well as technicians
busy at their jobs. Then it's Aosta's turn to be connected. A football field has been set up in the main
square of the city. The streaming from Turin shows us the excited local representative, surrounded by
the European delegations. Then we can see a 360° shot of the basketball court in Brindisi. Next it's
Messina turn, where the speaker throws a ball while handing over the connection to Assisi. Crotone,
where a sitting area has been set up for interviewing the athletes, follows. The streaming from Udine
shows us around the town's beautiful castle where the final prize giving ceremony takes place.
Grosseto comes next with the numerous dogs taking part in the Trio Agility Dog discipline. Then it's
Pescara and Monza's turn, with their well-equipped sport centres full of Integrated Karate fans. And so
on and so forth, with non-stop images via streaming from all 12 venues of the event, in a crescendo of
contagious enthusiasm that involves everyone without exception.
In each venue the host interviews those taking part, describes what's happening and explains the new
rules that are being tested out on the field. In order to allow both disabled and non-disabled athletes
compete together new regulations have been worked out for each sport.
In many cases these are little known sports, so the running commentary is a way of promoting social
integration as well as a respectful attitude towards the abilities of others, where others are considered
simply as opponents in a sport competition rather than enemies to be beaten.
The interviews are a series of statements on the importance of respect for others, on the importance of
appreciating diversity, reflections on the concept of personal limits, evaluations on the cultural and
social significance of the European Day of Integrated Sport.
The lunch break provides opportunities for getting to know others, for swapping opinions, thoughts
and emotions. Phoning other venues to find out what is happening is more important than eating. It's
a great feeling to see yourself on the big screens set up in each venue and participating live in what's
happening all over Italy.

A report on the day
The venues are always full of spectators, thanks to the sport demonstrations that alternate with
integrated sport competitions. These demonstrations give spectators the chance to learn about
Integrated Sport and Europe's contribution to this important initiative.
The sport activities start up again in the early afternoon, and now even the organizers are more relaxed
since they know that everything is going to plan. The sky has cleared and in some parts of Italy the sun is
even shining.
The competitions engross the spectators who support the different teams because they like a
particular athlete or they have a personal preference for a particular country.
The competitions are run according to the rules. This allows all 16 participating organizations (coming
from 13 European countries) to test out the rules being adopted and to cheer when they win.
The athletes on the fields and in the gyms start swapping names, phone numbers, etc., while the judges
draft the final results and organizers set up everything for the prize giving.
The podium is deliberately not used in any venue for prize giving, so that three winners are
metaphorically given an equal footing. Instead, three large posters indicating the first three places are
positioned in designated areas where winners take their places accordingly.
The reporters are now given the names of winning teams and athletes. Athletes can't wait for the prize
giving at the end of the day. As always, prize giving is a magic moment. The first three are given a medal
and a trophy; at the same time, all the other athletes receive a medal (showing date and logo of the
event) for their participation.
There are some protests regarding results and the different languages spoken don't help resolve the
issues. In some cases the judges begin to explain their decisions but all the arguments are cut short by
the Rome streaming with music indicating that the event is over. The sound of music gets everyone in
all the different venues dancing, while cameramen shoot and giant screens broadcast the pictures.
Flavia and Giorgio hug each other. Their eyes show all the feelings and emotions that we would like to
see in the eyes of every athlete and sportsperson.
