January Breeze 2012 Part 1
JANUARY 2012 The Placencia REEZE “The Peninsula Paper” Please Take One. Est. 1999 Placencia, Stann Creek District, Belize, C.A. Get Ready for the Biggest Sidewalk Arts Festival Yet! The Placencia BTIA is excited to announce that the 9th annual Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival will take place on February 11th and 12th, along the historic ribbon of concrete, which runs along the beautiful beach of Placencia Village. The Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival is one of the most unique events in Belize where guests can shop from an incredibly diverse selection of local art work and experience an eclectic group of performing artists while enjoying the view of the Caribbean Sea and the shade of coconut trees. The 2012 entertainment lineup is the most impressive yet. Performing artists include popular Placencia entertainers: Karl Lovell – a favorite R&B contender from the hit national Channel 5 TV show “Duets”; DJ Boneyfide – premier party DJ at Placencia’s Barefoot Bar, which recently won a close second place on Belikin’s poll of the best bars in the country; Turkey and Rudy of Placencia’s hot Caribbean jam band, The Inner Vibrations; Aaron Krohn – featured weekly classical guitarist at Maya Beach Bistro (2010 BTB Restaurant of the Year) and Turtle Inn; Dedo Ranking – local reggae artist and top contender on Placencia’s first nationally televised entertainment show, Placencia Star Search; Graham Berrie – rock and alternative sensation on Saturday nights at Barefoot Bar; Angela Suarez Moreno – sultry Spanish jazz/funk singer from Barcelona and featured artist at Turtle Inn; Coco Loco Electro Beats and visual show with DJ Marcus who divides his time between electro capital Ibiza, Spain and Placencia, and Emmeth Young – Placencia’s favorite Creole drummer from Gales Point who is known for his unique and spontaneous collaborations with local and international musicians. Placencia’s Hot Steppers Dance Crew will also be treating guests to an electrifying choreographed performance, while Stephanie Wandke will put everyone on edge with her famous fire dancing! And there’s more! National teen rock sensation Ascenthium from Orange Walk will also be sharing some classics and original material while DJ Evan Alrik Anderson from Benque will be introducing an apt electronic mix of Spanish, Creole, European and American music he calls moombahton. DJ Evan will also be accompanied by Benque’s Belly Dancing Troupe! In addition to the above performances, many of which will be taking place during our new “Art After Dark” segment on Saturday night, the PSAF Committee is also introducing an acoustic stage on the patio of Ms. Goodies Coffee Shop. Here, acoustic acts will join performances by poets such as Francis Eiley known for his published collection of poems completed while serving time unjustly behind prison bars. (See Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival, Page 7.) The 2012 Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival Logo was designed by Placencia Artist Anton Leslie. The Placencia Breeze - January 2012 - Page 2 Locals and Visitors Flocked to Robert’s Grove for PBTIA’s 12th Annual Placencia Mistletoe Ball The Placencia Chapter of the BTIA held its 12th Annual Placencia Mistletoe Ball on December 10, 2011 at Robert’s Grove Beach Resort. Resort owners and staff worked along with the event planning committee to introduce a new concept in all 12 years of this event’s history: hosting the Mistletoe Ball at two different locations. And, it was a success! Mistletoe Ballers were able to celebrate the holiday season in glamour while enjoying the best of both worlds in Placencia – the precious lagoon and a worldclass beach. Guests were greeted at the entrance of Robert’s Groves Beach Resort with festive Christmas brooches crafted by volunteers Tracey Eiley, Nichelle Rotier, Dylan Bernard and Lisa Macias. Dinner was served in biodegradable plates donated by Eco-Friendly Solutions at the outdoor deck of Robert’s Grove’s Seaside Restaurant. The atmosphere was elegant and guests enjoyed their mingling and chatter time. Gracious volunteers escorted guests by golf cart just across the road to the dance party, which kicked up a frenzy at Habanero Mexican Café at Robert’s Grove’s new marina. Thanks to a generous donation by the Belize Tourism Board, The Gilharry 7, one of the most popular party bands in Belize, had everyone dancing until 3 a.m. This year, special consideration was made for the ladies and their stilettos with flat flooring installed on the surface of Habanero’s deck. The Placencia BTIA would like to thank Yvette Guild and Robert’s Grove for making this possible. And, continuing with long-time Mistletoe Ball tradition, party-goers took time to capture their special moments and dressed-up occasion at Ed and Marion Carr’s (Muzamanzie Photography) Christmas photo booth. Muzamanzie Photography donates 25% of the total costs for each photo print to the Placencia BTIA ! The intense partying was briefly interrupted to announce winners of the mega door prize raffle, which featured impressive donations by many businesses on the Placencia Peninsula. The Placencia BTIA would like to thank the following for their donations: Chabil Mar Villas, Fat Boyz Pizza and Rain or Shine Delivery, The Pickled Parrot Bar & Grill, The Secret Garden Restaurant & Bar, Hatchet Caye Resort, Laru Beya, Belizean Nirvana, Maya Beach Hotel Bistro, Tree of Life Massage Studio, Lola’s Paintings, Tropic Air, Turtle Inn, Casa Placencia, Barefoot Bar, Tutti Frutti Gelateria, Whipray Caye Lodge, Goss Chocolate, Villas at Cocoplum, Manatee Inn, Rum Fish y Vino, Secret Garden Day Spa, Paradise Vacation Hotel, Wendy’s Restaurant & Bar, Charly’s Gifts, Blue Crab Beach Resort, Irie Cell Phone Rental, Captain’s Jak’s, Placencia Office Supply, The Barefoot Essentials, Southern Inland Tours, Harbor Hideaway and Belize Natural Energy. The Placencia Breeze - January 2012- Page 3 The Placencia Breeze – January 2012- Page 4 THINK SUMMER! … And What to do on those Cloudy Days … ??? We don’t get them often, but nuh worrih, PBTIA members have solutions! By PBTIA Chairman Stewart Krohn So why am I writing about summer? “Rent a bike, stroll the beach (some of my favorite walks on the beach are in this sort of weather - good for beach combing as the sea washes in treasures) …” - Deborah Vernon, Deb & Daves Last Resort The reason is that many of our winter visitors are under the mistaken impression that the “off season” is somehow a bad time to visit the Placencia Peninsula. The common misconceptions? “Caves, Mayan sites, Monkey River, Jaguar Preserve, Caves are the best because…..no sunlight to begin with …” - Katie Valk, Belize Trips “It rains!” “Visit the art galleries in Placencia, SB & Maya Beach; relax and read a book or magazine at a coffee shop; go shopping, watch TV at one of the many places that have TV in their restaurants or bars; watch sports events at sports bars, come to Goss Chocolate at Blue Crab Beach for free chocolate samples …” - Linn Wilson, Goss Chocolate and Blue Crab Beach Resort It’s the middle of winter and thousands of visitors from colder climates are enjoying the warmth of the Belizean sun. “Too many bugs!” “Hurricanes!” “Nothing to do!” Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, statistically June through October are rainier than the rest of the year, but that rain is mostly at night, comes in short downpours and only adds to the exotic tropical atmosphere. As for bugs, perhaps a few more sandflies and mosquitoes at dawn and dusk but nothing that will spoil your fun. “Bowling at Jaguar lanes followed by early dinner at Maya Beach Bistro is my idea of a perfect rainy day in Placencia!” - Jackie Tipton, Casa Placencia “MASSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” - Lee Nyhus, The Secret Garden Day Spa “They are really good for Inland Tours ... we offer a big variety ... even if they book at the last minute. We offer the Monkey River Tour everyday (nice on a gray day).” Patricia Ramirez, Splash Dive Shop “Pull up a bar stool and start ordering!” Brice, Cassie and Ellie Dial, Barefoot Bar “I know that I play cards and hang out with my friends … I also like to kayak on those days assuming the wind is not too bad … Other than that I usually just bike or wander around the village.” Larry France, Chabil Mar “Go to the jungle! Cockscomb!” Anne-Marie McNeil, Avadon Divers “Ring Toss at Yoli’s; Gallery hopping: Spectarte in Maya Beach, Lola’s in Seine Bight, Art and Soul in Placencia.” Ellen Lee, Maya Beach Bistro & Hotel Thanks to all our members who followed up on our “Question of the Week” sent to our e-mail list! We appreciate your feedback! Got more ideas? E-mail info@placencia.com or call us at 523-4045! Hurricanes? Iris, in 2001 was the only direct hit on the Peninsula in modern history. So the odds are totally in your favor. WHAT’S POPULAR?!!! So much for the perceived drawbacks. What are the advantages of summer/fall in Placencia? SCARLET MACAWS! 1. It’s cheaper! Most hotels offer attract tive rates that can be as much as 50% less than peak season. Tours and rentals are also more price flexible. 2. The fishing and diving may be better because the waters are calmer. Yes, the sun may shine brighter in April but those incessant winds can sometime make for a rough trip. In June-October you’ll find days when the water is like glass and you can actually watch the fish bite your hook. 3. Summer is the time when Belizeans come for fun. Sure, winter finds a lot of people around but they are mostly fellow tourists. The “off season” is when Belizeans from all over the country come to relax and unwind…and there’s no better way to get to know a place than by hanging out with the locals. Whether it’s Lobsterfest in June or Carnival in September, Placencia is the place to let your hair down and just be yourself. So by all means go ahead and thumb your nose at Old Man Winter … but the next time Belize is in your mind, THINK SUMMER! Arrange a tour today to nearby Red Bank Village with a local tour guide and don’t miss an opportunity of a lifetime! Between January and February hundreds of Scarlet Macaws gather at Red Bank to feed on ripe fruits of the annatto trees. It’s a challenging uphill hike, but worth it! Fire Safety The Placencia Breeze – January 2012- Page 5 December Breeze: Cousteau Correction Our article titled, “Jacque Cousteau’s Granddaughter Shares Plans to Highlight Belize’s Watersheds in Popular National Geographic TV Series” published in the December 2011 Placencia Breeze neglected to mention Turtle Inn and Blancaneaux’s formal partnership with Alexandra Cousteau and the Blue Legacy Foundation. On Oct. 13, 2011, Francis Ford Coppola’s Blancaneaux Lodge and Turtle Inn announced that they had formalized a partnership with Cousteau’s Blue Legacy. The partnership reflects Coppola Resorts’ commitment and dedication to “fostering best practices in ecotourism and sustainable travel.” It is through Coppola Resorts’ valuable relationships with Belize’s conservation partners and key influencers that Cousteau and the Blue Legacy team will gain a special insight into the management of Belize’s protected areas and be granted interviews with a wide range of community stakeholders. The Coppola Resorts in Belize are currently undertaking an array of sustainability initiatives. In June 2011, they joined the Sustainable Tourism Program led by international conservation group, The Rainforest Alliance and also partnered with Sustainable Travel International's global Sustainable Tourism Eco-Certification Program. Both resorts recently implemented a stainless bottle program aimed at reducing plastic bottle consumption by guests. Blancaneaux boasts a hydro-electric plant providing renewable energy and both resorts feature organic gardens that supply fresh produce used at their restaurants. ▪ Frankie has the solution to your real estate question! The Placencia Breeze – January 2012- Page 8 The Placencia Breeze – January 2012- Page 9 New Attitude Fashion Show Brought Unique and Trendy Styles to the Peninsula (Photos by Muzamanzie Photography) Placencia has long been known as a laid-back fishing community with many residents taking on a fairly casual, no-fuss style. But with an increasingly popular night life scene and resort culture attracting both locals and folks from out of town, as well as a popular photo shoot location for international fashion catalogs, there has been a growing number of fashionista sightings on the Peninsula. Right: An eco-friendly, elegant cocktail dress by Joris Hendrik. The time was ripe for a mega fashion show, and community organizer, Ycela Alpuche, wowed many with a near-perfectly executed event held on Placencia beach on Dec. 3, 2011. Young up and coming designer Joris Hendrik from Belmopan stands in front of his eco-friendly collection, which uses recycled goods including garbage bags, newspapers, neckties, bubble wrap and more to create stunning fashions for both men and women. Left: Model stuns in this dress with flowy floral skirt by R.H. Creation. This line also featured psychedelic patterns and bright Caribbean colors using soft materials perfect for a night out in Placencia. R.H. Creation also has an incredibly sexy and modern line of swimwear. “It had never been done before. I have many friends who design clothes, and my brother knew a lot of models, so there were many connections,” said Alpuche, who is the companion of Placencia Village Council Chairman Charles Leslie, Jr. and moved to Placencia from Belmopan City. Below Left: Little Camia stole the show wearing a bright confident smile and skipping excitedly down the runway! She is wearing a Baby Papaya animal print dress by Placencia designer Aline Habib. The New Attitude Fashion Show was a fundraiser for the Placencia Village Council, and proceeds assisted the PVC with stocking equipment and supplies, purchasing items for a toy drive and with the refurbishing of a stage used for community events. The stage received a major overhaul for the fashion show providing an impressive runway platform. Alpuche, a seasoned event coordinator, planned the show in just two months while simultaneously assisting the Placencia BTIA with the 12th Annual Mistletoe Ball. Below Right: Backstage, Aline Habib prepares her models for the runway. Alpuche canvassed a talented group of designers from all over Belize. Joris Hendrik from Belmopan City who switched from interior design to eco-friendly fashion, was a crowd favorite. B. Bonnie Designs by sisters Samantha and Roxanna Bradley from San Pedro showcased flattering convertible dresses (including wedding) and swimsuit multi wraps. The Heineken tents got steamy when models strutted in bold, daring and sexy Tyler-Made fashions by Tyler Savery from Belize City and breathtaking designs by His Glory Fashions by the gifted Maureen Navarette who said she did not study fashion in school. And, cuteness abound when Veda Couture Bows by Veda Sanchez from Orange Walk had little ones walking the runway wearing original and festive designs featuring lots of sparkle, ruffles (See New Attitude Fashion Show, page 20) Wendy’s Restaurant & Bar On the Main Street in downtown Placencia Open Daily 7:00 am til 9:30 pm Serving Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Patio Dining Outside & A/C Dining Inside Seating for 100 ~ Catering available for private events Phone 523-3335 & email wendylemus02@hotmail.com Visa & MasterCard Accepted “Our best meal in Belize is at Wendy's Restaurant…..” - Travel + Leisure Magazine Feb 2006 The Placencia Breeze – January 2012- Page 10 JANUARY 2012 At times you may visit Robert’s Grove Beach Resort and leave without having to go on a Dive & Snorkel Trip. My daughters inspire me,” said Sanchez. Placencia’s own Papaya Boutique by Aline Habib also sent children down the runway in adorable Papaya outfits including her popular animal print collection. Grown-up Placencia models also rocked Papaya in shiny body-hugging party dresses and comfy cotton day-time frocks. Models dressed up in more original Placencia designs wearing unique handmade jewelry by Khadija Assales’s Kaj Expressions who recently opened her Treasure Box on the Placencia Main Road. Creative pieces included body jewelry made of multi-colored, semi-precious stones. The New Attitude Fashion Show also promoted items sold at the following boutiques: Nexxus (Belize City), Dangriga Hand Bags and Character Boutique (Placencia). Crowd favorites included His Glory, B. Bonnie Designs and Joris Hendrik. “I loved the diversity. It’s great to see something cultural, universal and different,” said Shawn Young, owner of Pirate’s Point Adventure in Placencia. “We loved it. It was great. I liked the convertible dresses,” said Jean Butler who was visiting the village from Missouri, USA along with her husband Austin Butler. The Placencia Breeze –January 2012- Page 21 Barnacle Bill is Back with an Important Message for 2012: (Due to popular request, the Breeze searched through every watering hole on the Peninsula for our favorite crazy expat to share his wisdom. Who wouldah mih guess?! We find ah dah Maya Beach!) Happy New Year from the Placencia Peninsula! 2012 should be a great year! Everywhere you look you see improvements and upgrades. Just to highlight a couple examples: look at the roadside beautification project going on and the new vendor booths along the Placencia sports complex. Private businesses have spiffed up and got some new looks as well. Not all is blissful sunshine though. Some folks have decided that because they can’t find any Maya reference beyond December 21, 2012, that the world will end on that day … which brings up a few questions: If the world does end, will it end first in New Zealand area since they see the date first?... A gradual ending working its way west? … Or maybe one big blink out? Poof, gone! No matter what, I urge all of us to enjoy 2012 to the fullest. … And just to ease your minds, I DO have undeniable proof of a reference past 2012. Any time you want to stop by my house I will show you a can of Vienna sausages that don’t expire till 2014, so rest assured. Big Donation Gears up the Assassins for this Season By Marion Carr, contributing writer and photographer It’s almost time for football season, and the Placencia Assassins are well equipped to make it to the championships once again! Thanks to Maya Beach Resident Sandy Azancot from Ohio, USA, the Assassins are now stocked with 19 pairs of brand-new football pegs, 15 shin guards, eight pairs of goal-keeper gloves and two footballs. Some of the new pegs are kids sizes, which will be distributed to the junior Placencia team. The Placencia Assassins wish to thank Azancot for her generous donation. The equipment will go a long way to assisting The Placencia Assassins to retain their championship status in 2012. The team is still in need of practice team vests. If you would like to donate to the Placencia Assassins team, please contact any of the team management or players. Follow them on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/PlacenciaAssasins. Capt. The Placencia Breeze– January 2012- Page 22 California Friends Hold Successful Fundraiser for PMM By Marion Carr, contributing writer & photographer. California Friends of Placencia Mooring Masters held another successful fundraiser on Nov. 4, 2011 at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall in the Mission District of San Francisco. The event raised almost $1,400USD for the project of which $290USD has already been spent on hydraulic fittings for PMM’s new breaker tool, which was recently donated by Adcor Construction, as well as blue marine grade reflective tape to spruce up some of the older buoys and two lift bags to be used with the new breaker tool. The remaining funds raised will be used towards the costs for maintenance and new installations. California friends of PMM hold two fundraisers a year for the PMM mooring buoy project: one in the spring and the other in the autumn season. This autumn’s event was supported by live music from Kinky Buddha, the side project of Aaron Redner from Hot Buttered Rum. Dan Lebowitz from ALO sat in as a special guest on guitar. The audience was also treated to a live performance from the Luscious Ladies Dance Troupe. PMM thanks all the performers for coming out to support this event. We understand everyone had an awesome time with more than 150 people in attendance. Proceeds were collected from a raffle and from the door on the night of the event where more than $900 in raffle tickets were sold. This strongly demonstrates the value of all the donations both locally in California and from Placencia. The winners of the three Placencia grand prize packages are Joe and Brandi Bridges, Jodi Berg and Julie Johnson Skinner. PMM wishes to thank the following business for their generous donations for the three grand prize packages: Turtle Inn, Splash Dive Center, Wendy’s Restaurant, Tree of Life Spa, Barefoot Services, Belizean Nirvana Beach Suites, Seahorse Dive Shop, Paradise Resort Restaurant, Miramar Apartments, Exotic Tours, La Dolce Vita and Secret Garden Spa. PMM thanks you all for your ongoing support for the project. Not only do these prizes make the raffle more successful, but it also gives Placencia businesses an opportunity to get additional expo- Right: San Francisco winner of one of several prizes donated by businesses in Placencia. We hope that local businesses will again step up to donate prizes to be complied into packages to be raffled at this event. PMM extends major kudos to California Friends of PMM for their steadfast support of the project by hosting these annual fundraising events. In fact, the last three fundraisers have raised around $5,000USD for the project, and these funds have been used towards purchasing equipment and materials needed to repair damaged buoys (recycling) and to maintain the anchor mooring buoys installed under the PMM mooring buoy project. Installation trips can cost up to $3000BZD for 3 days working cleaning and repairing the buoys, so every dollar counts … you guys rock big time. The Placencia Breeze– January 2012- Page 23 St. Alphonsus Wins Junior Jankunu Competition in Dangriga In the December issue of the Placencia Breeze, we told you about the St. Alphonsus Jankunu Dancers and the elder Ligermeri Wanaragua gearing up for a dance-off at Y-Not Island in Dangriga. Well, this year the juniors snagged first place while the elders had to relieve their championship title returning home with a second place trophy in the senior competition. Members of the St. Alphonsus Jankunu Dancers range from ages eight to 14. They competed against seven dance camps coming from Dangriga, Georgetown and Punta Gorda. In addition to a championship plaque, the children also received a Hewlett Packard printer and a $750 cash prize of which half was distributed among the champions with the balance supporting an account to supplement the costs of future competitions. The Placencia Breeze– January 2012- Page 24 COMMUNITY briefs Rotary Club of Placencia By Greg Valiton, contributing Rotarian December is a month to spend time with family and friends and reflect on what the year has been. The Rotary Club of Placencia started the month with the completion of a large project followed by a Fireside and, outside of Bingo and some planning for upcoming events and projects, spent the rest of the month enjoying the holiday season. BINGO The 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month Bingo games continued with games held on December 1 and December 15. A larger crowd than we have been having gathered on December 1 with Estella (2 time winner), Victor, Alma (2 time winner), Ken and Suzan (split pot), Steve, Jean, and Judy all winning. The winner of the progressive jackpot game was Terry who, despite missing the “cover all” in 49 balls or less, still collected a pot of over $100. Another enthusiastic crowd gathered for the game on December 15 with the winners being Karl (3 time winner), Therese, Dorothy, Adrian (2 time winner), Miriam, Cindy, Gale, Malu, Maretha, and Ivan. Again, the progressive jackpot was not hit, but Annette still collected a nice pot. As always, we wish to thank J-Dees for providing the venue for these twice a month games, Kathy Anglin for calling the games (with an assist from Wanda and Sandra on the 15th), and, most of all the people that come out to play and support our efforts in the community. The money raised goes to various causes, which we try to identify at each game. One of the causes that we have been collecting for is the purchase of a defibrillator for the Village. Thanks to the generosity of Ken Kent of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, we may have accumulated enough for this purchase, which will allow funds raised to go to other things such as the Senior Lunch. We thank Ken for his donation. Please continue to come out and support these, and other, causes. You might even win the progressive jackpot. SEINE BIGHT PRESCHOOL The work on the expansion of the Preschool in Seine Bight Village was completed at the beginning of December and a dedication ceremony was held on December 3. The ceremony opened with PTA President Steve Christensen welcoming all of those in attendance and introducing Standard V & VI students from St. Alphonsus R.C. School who moved everyone by singing the Lord’s Prayer in Garifuna followed by the National Anthem. Rotary Club of Placencia President Steve Wade then spoke about how the project came to be and the working relationship we have developed with the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada. Duane Evans of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West then spoke more about the project and possible future projects before turning things back over to Steve Christensen to speak on behalf of Sue Dick of St. John Lutheran Church in Missouri (who was unable to attend but expressed her thoughts in a beautiful letter read by Steve Christensen) regarding their role in the completion of the project. A thank you from Raymond Ogaldez, Principle of St. Alphonsus R.C. School completed the ceremony and refreshments were served by the PTA. The completion of this project was due to a cooperative effort between the Seine Bight PTA, the Rotary Club of Placencia, the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada, and the St. John Lu- theran Church in Missouri, USA. We wish to thank Steve Christensen of the Seine Bight PTA, Duane Evans and the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, and Sue Dick and the St. John Lutheran Church for making this project possible. Also, we wish to thank our Contractor, Martin Galvez, for working with us and getting the project done in a timely manner. This was the largest project we have completed to date and we hope that by continuing to work with people and organizations such as these, bigger and better projects will be coming. FIRESIDE Immediately following the Preschool dedication, Placencia Rotarians and their guests moved over to Maretha McCullock’s home in Seine Bight for one of our Firesides (generally held 4 times a year). As always, the Fireside featured good food (everyone brings a dish to share), good fun and fellowship. Maretha has taken on the role of game coordinator for these functions and she delivered again with several games that had everyone laughing (and, once again, without injury to any of the participants) and concluded with a piñata that had more than a few people swinging wildly until it was finally broken and the candy inside distributed to the children that were in the area to watch the fun. Towards the end of the party, Duane and Fred from the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada, announced that, after hearing about the toy drive that Kathy Anglin and Tracy Eiley do every year for Christmas, their Rotary Club decided to take up weekly collections at their meetings, resulting in their presenting Kathy with a large donation for this year’s drive and bringing tears to the eyes of all that were present. We thank Maretha McCullock for hosting this party and give special thanks to Duane and Fred of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West for all that they and their Rotary Club have done to live by the Rotary motto “Service Above Self”. It is a privilege to know people like them that make being a Rotarian worthwhile. TOY DRIVE Every year for the past few years, Tracy Eiley and Kathy Anglin have held a Toy Drive and a Children’s Christmas Party where there are games, treats, a gift, and a visit from Santa. This year, the proceeds of our Haunted House went to the Toy Drive and several guests and visitors, such as the previously mentioned Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada, and Terry and Judy Brooker, have also donated generously to make this year’s a great one. On Christmas Eve morning, Placencia Ro- tarians will join Tracy and Kathy at the Children’s Christmas Party to serve as elves and help out however we can. We thank all that have donated money, toys, or time and wish to give special thanks to Tracy Eiley and Kathy Anglin for all of their hard work putting this together, it is a pleasure to work with and try to help out dedicated people like them. OUR CLUB The Rotary Club of Placencia only has 17 members at this time, but, much is accomplished through their hard work and by our association with other Rotary Clubs and individuals. We are approached often by other Rotary Clubs and individuals that express a desire to help, however, every project or undertaking has to be coordinated and tracked by members of our Club to ensure that donations are utilized in a fair and honest manner, so more members in Placencia would help us get more accomplished. Please consider stopping in at one of our meetings to see what is planned and how you may be able to help. Even if joining Rotary isn’t possible for you, there are many other ways to get involved and experience the feeling of giving back and helping out in your community. The Rotary Club of Placencia meets on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. at Yoli’s. Lunch is $10. The Placencia Breeze– January 2012- Page 25 COMMUNITY BRIEFS PRESCHOOL DEDICATIONS Anglican Bishop Rev. Three years ago we did not have a paved road, there were very few cars in the village and even fewer tourists. At the end of 2011, we saw many things that were changing including the Placencia Fire Department. We now have one paid firefighter that is stationed here in Placencia. Thanks to the Rotary Club and donations, we have a fire truck, some gear and fire equipment. As we look at all of these advancements, another area that can be addressed is general safety and fire safety. In the last couple of months I know of two reports where kids were hit or almost hit by vehicles. Parents it is your responsibility to train your children the laws of the road, such as looking both ways before pulling into traffic, who has the right of way and being mindful of vehicles and motorcycles. Also, drivers in the village MUST SLOW DOWN. When emergency vehicles including police cars are on the road with their lights on, please remember to pull to the right and slow down or stop to let them by. On the occasions when there have been fires in the village, everyone should be commended for working together to help out. A few fire safety tips to keep in mind: always have an exit plan in case of fire, if at all possible try to have at least two means of exiting your home; children should NEVER play with matches; each home should have at least one smoke/gas detector (ideally there should be one in each bedroom); if you are able to get some in your home please remember to check the batteries at least once a year. A fire extinguisher is always good to have and if you need training on how to use one contact one of the volunteers or the firefighter stationed at the Police Station. When there is a building on fire, the firemen are trained to keep the scene safe and people from getting hurt. When a property is on fire things to look out for are live power lines, butane bottles, aerosol cans, and firearms that when heated can explode or cause electrocution. Until Placencia Village has a good water source which is a fire hydrant system, when firemen get a call it takes time to find an appropriate water source and hook up the equipment. Also, if the house is too far gone we are more concerned with saving surrounding homes and making sure the fire does not spread. For example with the fire that just happened at Ms. Grace’s house very quickly we realized that the house could not be saved so all of the efforts were to save the surrounding homes. Your cooperation in this type of effort will be greatly appreciated and will help to make Placencia an even better place and safer place to live. The Placencia Volunteer Fire Department would like to take this time to thank all the volunteers and if you are interested in training and becoming a volunteer fire fighter, we meet every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Fire Building across from the Police Station. To report a fire, please call the fire station at 503-3222 or the Police Station The Placencia Breeze– January 2012- Page 31 WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE PLACENCIA BREEZE?
