11/7/14 Who are we? ELEMENTARY BOOK CLUBS Connecting Books to the Community How we started • We have done a number of book clubs over the years at our schools, such as, breakfast clubs, lunch bunches, adult/child with acKviKes at school. These have all been successful, but we wanted to try something new. So, we wrote a grant through our school district for $1000.00 to buy books for students to use and do a book club with links to our community. • Tracey Rickabaugh, Jay Shideler Elementary School • rickatra@usd437.net • Robin Hartpence, Indian Hills Elementary • hartprob@usd437.net • Auburn Washburn School District , Topeka 3RD GRADE Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith Community Field Trip: Hazel Hill Chocolate TradiKons Dinner: Classic Bean Sandwich Shop-‐wrap w/chips and pop/book discussion Cost: $6:40 (meal) 4th Grade Book Club Nightmare at the Book Fair By Dan Gutman Community Field Trip: Toured Topeka Public Library – youth services and behind-‐the-‐scenes Snack: cookies, trail mix, and lemonade while discussing the book. -‐We gave each student a free paperback Cost: $2.00 1 11/7/14 5th Grade Book Club Million Dollar Strike By Dan Gutman Community Field Trip: bowling Dinner: pizza, pop, ice cream sandwich/ book discussion Cost: $7. 50 6th Grade Book Club Gabby, Lost and Found by Angela Cervantes Community Field Trip: Toured local humane shelter. Book Swaps • Author Visits • Each year the librarians of the district work together to host a book fair at Barnes and Noble.
