A Description Of The Project: Most of us spend over half our waking hours working. A workplace that encourages healthy eating habits can reduce your risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke), the leading cause of death in Malaysian and worldwide. The Lions Club of Seremban Central with the assistance of The Heart Foundation Malaysia (Yayasan Jantung Malaysia) recently organized the Seremban Heart Week 2009 programme themed “Wellness At Workplace “ which promotes healthy habits at workplaces. Seremban Heart Week 2009, from Thursday 10 December to Wednesday 16 December, was aimed at increasing the community’s awareness about heart health and promoting ways of leading healthy lifestyles. This was the fourth year such event organized by the club for the local community of Seremban. The event was supported by the Health Ministry of Malaysia. The week-long programme providing various society and people of different ages fun along with a fitness message through health and heart screenings. By partnering with local health service providers organizations, the 7 focus days of Heart Week promote prevention, education, symptoms awareness and early intervention. Preparations started one month ago and we, Lions worked very hard to get the message across to the public by first having a press conference on Tuesday, 1 December. The press release were published at the following newspapers : (please refer to attached newspapers cutting) Bahasa Malaysia Language – Sinar Harian (1-12-2009) Chinese Language - China Press (2-12-2009) Nanyang Siang Pau (2-12-2009) Sin Chew Daily (2-12-2009) English Language – The Star (12-12-2009) Ten radio stations assisted us with broadcasting the week-long event. They are as follows: English radio station Mix FM Lite FM Hitz FM Bahasa Malaysia radio station Era FM Sinar FM X-Fresh FM THR Gegar Chinese radio station My FM One FM There was much to do prior to the event; designing artwork of banner and backdrop, sending out invitations, printing programmes, organizing physical fitness performance, enquired quotation for tea reception and ordering souvenir. Distribution of 1,000 copies of bilingual flyers were placed at the information counter of the venue event, distributed to various community’s associations, fitness centres, colleges and during club other projects. (Please refer attachment of the flyers) At ground floor, concourse area of Terminal 1 Shopping Complex, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan about 654 shoppers and shop lots tenants walked in for the health & heart screening of Electrocardiogram (ECG). Some had traveled from as far away as Tampin for the health screening. The daily healthcare screening for blood tests included analysis of blood sugar, lipid profile test which consists of tests for cholesterol and triglycerides, blood pressure checks and healthy lifestyle counseling were conducted by a team of nurses and dietarian from three hospital partners, namely; Tuanku Jaafar Hospital Seremban, KPJ Specialist Hospital Seremban and Senawang Specialist Hospital. The measurement of height and weight (Body Mass Index or BMI) identifies those who may be overweight or obese and provide them with health education regarding benefits of weight loss. Vitamin supplements were also given out to shoppers. There was also an exhibition focused on care for the heart, how the heart works, Cholesterol & Heart Disease, Diet & Nutrition, personal hygiene and mental health. LAUNCHING CEREMONY 12 December 2009 (Saturday) from 3.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. The Seremban Heart Week was launched by Assistant Health Director Dr. Ariffin bin Mohammad who represented State Health Director Datin Dr. Zailan Binti Dato’ Hj. Adnan In his speech, Dr. Ariffin said “Cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, stroke and blood vessel disease) is the single leading cause of death in Negeri Sembilan. It causes 40% of all deaths annually in our country - approximately 7,300 people each year - making it more deadly than all forms of cancer, which total 29% of all deaths. It is the leading cause of death for both men and women in this country, much of which is premature and preventable”. After his speech, Dr Ariffin hand pressed a switch, mist were blowing then the rose of a heart gimmick to symbolically launch the Seremban Heart Week 2009. President Lion Yee Kok Kong expressed his gratitude to health service providers, members of the club and health professional personnel for providing support to ensure the success of the project. A physical fitness was performed, where the instructors were from the Kecergasaan Tentera Darat. Also present at the launch were First Vice District Governor 308B1 Lion Dato’ Yeow Wah Chin, Complex Manager, Vice Chairman for The Heart Foundation of Malaysia Dato’ Gurbakhash Singh, Complex Manager Mr Henry John, representatives from Department of Health Ministry Malaysia, Tuanku Jaafar Hospital Seremban, KPJ Specialist Hospital Seremban and Senawang Specialist Hospital Dr. Ariffin accompanied by Lion Dato’ Yeow Wah Chin and Dato’ Gurbakhash Singh then took a short tour and visited the health booth. FREE HEARING SCREENING (11.00 A.M. TO 7.00 P.M) In conjunction with this Heart Week, Lion Club also provided free hearing screening for the public. Gnosis Professional Hearing Services conducted the free hearing screening for 72 shoppers during the eight-hour event. Special discount voucher were given to those who need further examination in the clinic for hearing diagnostic test or hearing aid trial and hearing aid fitting. CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION DEMONSTRATION (4.00 PM TO 5.00 PM) There was also a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstration on how to resuscitate adults and children. St. John Ambulance Seremban demonstrated how to resuscitate a person and had the shoppers and their children involved in the demonstration. After the demonstration, St. John Ambulance members involved were treated to tea at Station Kopitam, courtesy of President Lion Yee Kok Kong. CHILDREN COLOURING COMPETITION FROM 10.30 A.M. TO 1.30 P. M. Thirty-three children ages 5 to 8 were seen hard at work with crayons and colour pencils taking part on Children Colouring competition. Participants were given a time limit of 1 hour to complete their entries. President Lions Yee Kok Kong, Assistant COC Lion Moon Tan and myself had a tough time choosing the winners. There were 10 winners of which 7 were consolation prize winners. Eight-year-old, Law Win Son from Lukut, Port Dickson grabbed the first prize while Sandy Lye Choi Wan, six, eagerly took her second prize hamper, which looked a bit too heavy for her small built! Finally, eight -year-old, Foo Chong Chian from Tampin took home the third prize. Present with President Lion Yee in giving away the prizes were Assistant Executive, Encik Fazaluddin of The Heart Foundation Malaysia . Hamper prizes worth up to RM150 were sponsored by Quaker Oat and each children participated were given a door-gifts. The competition was held with the main aim of attracting a larger crowd on weekend, while the parents were having their health screened, their children were having fun too.
