A COSHOCTON FOUNDATION PROGRAM
The Program
Created and partially underwritten by the Coshocton Foundation, Leadership Coshocton County is a learning
program for established, emerging and potential Coshocton County leaders.
As a community leadership program, Leadership Coshocton County believes in...
•Creating a sense of community spirit.
•Building leadership skills through diverse educational experiences and networking.
•Strengthening leadership abilities through appreciating the diversity of our community.
•Nurturing individuals to enhance their stewardship and commitment to the community.
The goals of the program are to:
• Develop resourceful individuals from all the diverse sectors of the community.
• Encourage an awareness of Coshocton County’s resources, problems and opportunities.
• Stimulate a commitment to improving the quality of Coshocton County life.
• Assist in the development of a communications network among the county’s present and future leaders.
• Create a forum where individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to Coshocton County can assemble
and create ideas.
The Mission of Leadership Coshocton County
To build, strengthen and nurture leadership skills of participants to stimulate active participation and community
spirit, to improve the quality of life in Coshocton County.
The Leadership Story
More than a decade ago a man from Coshocton took a chance and began to think outside the box. Coshocton
Foundation President Robert Thomas envisioned a program that would identify, train and motivate citizens to
accept volunteer leadership roles within the community. In August 1990, after months of discussions and planning,
the permanent trustees of the Coshocton Foundation approved support for the Leadership Coshocton County
Program.
BobThomas,alongwithProjectChairmanBruceWallaceandJimElliott,thefirstExecutiveDirector,met
with other communities; Newark, Zanesville, Marietta, to get ideas on how to establish what our community now
knows as Leadership Coshocton County. A Steering Committee of 12 individuals, ready and willing to accept the
challenge, was also assembled to oversee the operations of the program. Over 50 applications were received, all
serious and worthy of consideration, to become members of the Charter Class, and only 20 were chosen.
After three years at the helm, volunteer director Elliott resigned. Christine Cugliari, 1993 graduate, then
assumed responsibility as the Executive Director. Lena Crouso, a 1999 graduate, became the third Executive
Director. Cindy Beyer, a 2000 graduate, became the fourth Executive Director and currently Donna Meyers, a
2001 graduate, serves as Executive Director.
Sincethefirstclassgraduatedin1992,eachLeadershipCoshoctonCountyclasshasenrolledupto20
members. The classes work together to broaden their leadership skills and community awareness. Each year
classes begin with an opening retreat led by a facilitator. The purpose of the retreat is to create a comfort level
between members, to begin the process of forming cohesiveness within the class, to solidify the understanding of
the goals and purpose of the program, to assist other class members as they determine their individual leadership
styles, and to begin the process of developing different leadership skills.
TheclassthenmeetsmonthlyfromOctoberthroughMaytoexplorespecificareasofconcentrationwithinthe
county. They include community issues, education and volunteer activities, business, labor and economy, arts and
media,healthandhumanservice,governmentandenvironmentandfinally,justiceandlawenforcement.Eachclass
also works on one or more projects. The year concludes with graduation.
The more than 385 alumni of Leadership Coshocton County have, in fact, risen to the challenge to think
outside the box, all to improve the quality of life in Coshocton County. This can be summarized best by a quote
Bob Thomas loved to use from Andrew Carnegie, “The best means of benefiting a community is to place within reach
the ladders upon which the aspiring can rise.”

class taxed themselves monthly and used the money and
their labor to improve the facility and buy needed items.

Approximately 140 benefitted including GED and TLC.

Bike Path. Generated additional funds through class effort
to revive LCC alumni. Members paid $25 to attend annual
dinner and brainstorming session, generating $1700.
