You have to love our Men’s Club! The guys saw
a need and they seized the opportunity. Courtesy of
the Men’s Club, our Temple is the recipient of three
new stainless steel wheeled carts for the kitchen and a
beautiful kitchen first-aid kit. The guys are working hard
to support the organization and I’m proud that they’re
part of our temple family.
On April 9, at Shabbat services, our religious school
held a consecration ceremony for the third graders. The
participation from our school students was a moving
experience and the kids were wonderful.
If you haven’t been coming to our TGIS services
and dinners on Friday evenings, you will have another
chance this month on May 27. You don’t have to stay for
dinner if you only want to attend the service. Maariv is
conducted by our Rabbi and Cantor, along with Cantor
Mitch Martin and Sam Weber, and is participatory –
singing along is encouraged! If you do stay for dinner,
the meals are always tasty and there’s plenty of food.
Services are free. For dinner pricing and reservations,
contact the temple office.
Don’t forget about our Yom Hashoah program this
year on May 5. Always a meaningful day for Jews, this
year’s joint program with Temple Beth Kodesh is special
as we will recall the names of those who perished at

It’s hard to believe that this is my last shul Bulletin
article before we start preparing for the High Holidays.
This month of May, although it doesn’t contain any of
the “biggies,” does include some important “minor”
holidays, such as Yom HaShoah, Yom Ha’Atzmaut and
Lag B’Omer. So let me ask you a question to which
I am sure you may have an opinion: Does Judaism
require glitz?
I pose this question to you because so many shuls/
temples are losing members or are trying to figure out
how to attract the Jewish masses (or, at least, their own
members) through their doors. At times, it seems that
when reading Jewish publications, especially just before
Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, the Jewish community
has hired a New York – Madison Avenue advertising
agency to bring Jews to synagogues. Or to put it another
way – to fill the pews with Jews!
My colleague, Marc Angel, notes this trend toward
competitive advertising and, yes, what it implies.
Rabbi Angel writes: “Recent issues of New York’s
Jewish Week newspaper, as well as other publications,
have included advertisements by area synagogues
that promise ‘inspiring services and sermons, talented
cantors, special programs for children, etc.’ Several
hotels have placed ads attempting to lure customers
to spend the holy days in their ‘luxurious and chic’

facilities where guests enjoy services led by fine cantors,
rabbis and scholars in-residence.”
When we look at these ads – and they need not be
only for the High Holy days, but for any Shabbat and for
Yom Tov – or anytime – what we see is that nearly all
those ads are appealing to our desire to be entertained.
The ads seem to be telling us: come to our synagogue or
our hotel and you’ll have a great time with good music,
good speakers and lots of inspiration. Instead of going
elsewhere, why not come to us, because we can entertain
you better or cheaper, or even for free.
So, now we have synagogues marketing themselves
as entertainment centers, which may also include some
“inspirational” and “meaningful” services in order to
attract people. I agree with Rabbi Angel that, far too
often, Judaism (or what purports to be Judaism) has,
sadly, descended to this level. And it pains me. In the
synagogue – in G-d’s house – tefillah (Jewish prayer) is
not meant to entertain us. It is meant to challenge us to
be better than who we are. Prayer is meant to encourage
us to raise our own spiritual souls by our sincere efforts.
If we wish to leave a legacy of committed Jews, then
isn’t it time for us to re-examine not only our shuls but
ourselves as well and not settle for entertainment?
Now that’s something to think about.

Cantor Grossman – Palm Beach County’s Most
Versatile Cantor. That’s how our Cantor is billed on his
web site, and you have to admit that statement is true.
Cantor can do it all – chazzanot, Broadway tunes, the
Great American Song book, and more. And he makes all
of it look effortless. That effortless appearance comes
from the time and energy Cantor puts into practice and
rehearsal, and his commitment to his craft. When I see
Cantor Grossman, I’m reminded that I need to be adept
at more than one skill, and if I’m going to pursue a skill,
I have to be sure I give my full effort to getting as close
to perfection as I can. Versatility is important, but not
at the expense of developing great ability within that
versatility. And, always keep reaching and striving to
improve, and have commitment.
Rabbi Shub is a mensch, and brilliantly learned in many
subjects. Yet, he’s easygoing, and very approachable, and
humble. While emulating those qualities is something
we all ought to do, there’s something special to me about
our Rabbi. I’ve come to lean on him as a sounding board
for decisions I need to make or for advice about ideas I’d
like to pursue. Rabbi Shub taught me that I have to look
at all sides of an issue, and making a hasty decision is
usually worse than taking the time to think and consider
the outcomes of the decision. He has shown me that I
have to consider people’s feelings when making choices,
but it’s also okay for me to have my own feelings on a
matter and not to ignore my own feelings. And, when
I think about Rabbi, I’m always reminded to not do to
others that which I would find distasteful if done to me.
The Bulletin is taking a rest for the summer. Judy
Schnee has been working hard, along with her editorial
staff, and has earned a well-deserved break. I hope
everyone has a great summer season.

SISTERHOOD
As this is the last bulletin before the summer, I would
like to review some of the events that Sisterhood held.
Our Sisterhood year began with Rabbi Shub addressing
our first meeting. Cantor Grossman entertained us at
our November meeting. We held very successful card
party/luncheons under the aegis of Trudy Bromberg and
Ellen Gold. The number of attendees has increased with
each successive luncheon/card party, many of whom are
not Sisterhood members. Delicious luncheons (hot) are
catered by Diamond Caterers, and a variety of choices
is offered. Why aren’t you coming?
Our Sisterhood Shabbat was held in January. Most
of the women who were asked to take a part said
“Yes”. I was very proud of all our women. Our paidup members lunch was very well attended. Our Torah
Fund brunch honored Michelle Grabasch, who well
deserved this honor. The Torah Fund Vice President
of Florida Region of Women’s League addressed the
group.
In March, Sisterhood’s Purim event involved the
entire congregation if they chose to participate. We
filled shalach monas (giving food and sweets to family
and friends) bags for distribution and fund raising.
This was a huge undertaking that was very successful.
I want to thank everyone who helped set this in motion
and all those who participated.
There is a germ of an idea growing in my head and
it is this: when looking through your closets, you may
find you have some “gently used” handbags. You might
consider donating these to Sisterhood for an event I
hope to have in the next Sisterhood year. There are no
concrete details yet. Just some thoughts on what might
be an interesting and exciting evening or afternoon.
I trust you had a wonderful Passover. The Temple
did not have a seder because no caterer was able to do
this for us. We enjoyed the playing and singing of Syd
Eskin at our April meeting.
I wish all of you a wonderful summer. Be safe, be
well, and come back to us in good health and plan to be
part of Sisterhood. We cannot do things without you!

MEN’S CLUB
The Men’s Club wishes a speedy recovery to the wives
of two of our valued members, Marilyn Blumenthal and Iris
Lazarus. Many of our Temple Beth
Tikvah and Men’s Club members
wonder what happens to the dues and
program fees they pay to the Men’s
Club. Well, they need not wonder
anymore. The Men’s Club just spent
in excess of $1,300.00 to upgrade
our much needed first aid kit in the
kitchen and purchased three brandnew stainless steel carts, with 5”
wheels, for the kitchen. That is why
it is important to belong to the Men’s Club because one of
our mission statements is to help support our Temple.
While we regretfully cancelled our trip to the Navy
Seal Museum in Fort Pierce because of lack of interest
and participation by our Temple and Men’s Club members
(does that sound familiar?), we have other programs
planned for the remaining spring months and some in the
summer, and we hope that our temple members and Men’s
Club members will come out and help support our temple.

I would like to extend a special welcome to Larry
Newman who recently joined the Men’s Club board. He
was also elected to the temple board, as was one of our
other Men’s Club board members, Allen Lichaa. Now,
that’s what I call commitment! Yasher Koach to both
these gentlemen. They not only talked about it, but they
actually walked the walk! We also invited two other
gentlemen who expressed an interest to attend our next
board meeting as guests. I will not reveal their names
until they make the decision if they want to join our
board.
I would like to remind our temple members that our
Rabbi is leading an Israel trip, from November 30 to
December 13, and he has asked Jane and me to serve
as his mini-committee. Our first informational meeting
was held on April 14. We will have our own bus with
guides and driver provided by Israel Celebration Tours,
but more about this trip in a later issue.
Finally, I would like to wish our “snowbirds” a safe
and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you back
in the fall. To our remaining temple members I wish you
likewise as well.

Z’HAVAH
Z’havah hopes everyone had a Happy Pesach with
nice seders, an easy time without the usual carbs but, most
of all, some enjoyable time with family and friends. And
the celebrations continue in May. We would like to wish
everyone a happy yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel Independence
Day), Pesach Sheni (second Pesach), and Lag B’Omer
(33rd day of counting the Omer). And we remember
together all those who lost their lives in the struggle
that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and all
military personnel who were killed while active duty in
Israel’s armed forces (on Yom HaZikaron) and all those
who perished in resistance and at the hands of the Nazis
in the Holocaust (on Yom HaShoah).
Please join us as Z’havah sponsors the delicious meal
following the TGIS service on May 27. We hope to see
everyone there!

We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to member
Nancy Sokoloff. And we wish a refuah sh’lemah to our
member Ina Tessenholtz. We miss you, and wish you a
full, speedy recovery. Get well soon!
There’s a great deal of naches this month for our
Z’havah members. First, let’s all congratulate Zachary
Schwartz, son of Gail Schwartz on receiving his first
siddur. We hope as he continues to study the words will
guide him, challenge him, and inspire him. We also want
to wish member Nancy Sokoloff a Mazel Tov on the Bar
Mitzvah of her son Alex this month. As he is called to
the Torah we congratulate him on his achievement and
wish Alex and his family much happiness and prosperity.
We wish Allie Warner, daughter of member Leah Warner,
Sheh’ti’ye leh’cha nsi’ah to’va, a good, safe trip as she
embarks on a journey to Israel this May with the Birthright
Program.

congratulations to the following graduates: Alex Sokoloff,
son of Nancy Sokoloff, and Noah Wilfond and Joshua

on her completion of Elementary School and Jaddy Arauz,
daughter of Jenny Arauz, together with Noah Bach, son
of member Ellen Bach on their completion of Middle
School. We wish them well as they move on to Middle
and High School respectively. And l’hitraot, it’s never
good bye – a big Mazel Tov to Beth Grabasch, daughter
of Michelle Grabasch, who graduates from High School
and will be attending the University of South Florida in
Tampa, beginning this summer. To all of our graduates,

On A High Note

CANTOR GROSSMAN
Shavuot [Pentecost], a festival tucked away in the
middle of the year and likely to be forgotten by secular
Jews if not for the abundant assortment of cheesecake
and blintzes recipes, is actually a rich source of folklore
and folksongs reflecting agricultural festivity and the
mysticism of revelation.
The different names of the festival highlight its
various aspects.
1. The names Festival of the First Fruits [Chag
habikurim] and Harvest Festival [Chag hakatsir] reflect
the fact that Shavuot was originally an agricultural
festival - “You shall observe the festival of the harvest,
the first fruits of your labors, which you will sow in the
field…” (Shemot [Exodus] 23:16).
2. The names Festival of Weeks [Chag haShavuot]
and Solemn Assembly [Chag ha’Atseret] show that
the festival is also the culmination of the seven-week
“Counting of the Omer”, beginning on the second day
of Pesach. This period was regarded as a count-down to
the revelation on Mt. Sinai. According to Kabbalistic
thought, the counting [sefirah] of the Omer promotes
the radial influence of the seven Godly qualities
[sefirot] with which man was endowed at Creation:
chessed [kindness], gevurah [strength, empowerment],
tiferet [beauty], netzach [infinity], hod [gratitude],
yesod [foundation]and malchut [kingship]. This idea is
expressed in the prayer Ribono shel olam - Ve’al yedei
ze [May abundant bounty thereby be bestowed upon all
the worlds]. 3. Another name - The anniversary of giving of the
Torah [Z’man matan torateinu] - represents the mystical
aspect of the revelation at Mt. Sinai, when God and
the Jewish people came together in the covenant. The
connection between the Almighty and the Assembly
of Israel [Knesset Yisrael], or between Moses and the
Torah, is expressed in the metaphor of a sacred marriage,
which is based upon the prophecy of Hosea (2:21-22):
“I will betroth thee unto Me forever; yea, I will betroth
thee unto Me in righteousness, and in justice, and in
lovingkindness, and in compassion. And I will betroth
thee unto Me in faithfulness, and thou shalt know the
Lord”.
An all-night vigil of Torah learning, Tikkun Leil
Shavuot, was originally practiced by the Kabbalists
in the 16th century. According to the “Zohar”, the
Kabbalistic “Book of Splendour”, the word “tikkun”
has two meanings: “repair” and “decoration”. Studying
the Torah was a means of “repairing” the Tablets of the
Law, which had been smashed following the sin of the
golden calf; the 24 books of the Law were the “jewels”
with which God’s celestial bride, the Torah, were
“decorated”. The concept of Tikkun Olam [Repairing
of the world] applies both to Kabbalistic mysticism and
to the concept of social justice, which is central to all
streams of Judaism. Nowadays, variations of study on the night of
Shavuot are observed by conservative as well as
orthodox Jews. From the musical point of view, Hasidim
sing exuberant songs of faith, e.g., “Torah tsiva lanu
Moshe” [Moshe commanded us to study the Torah].
This year, our congregation will join with Temple
Beth Kodesh and we will be having our study session
on the first night of Shavuot at Temple Beth Kodesh.
Shavuot services continue at our Temple on Sunday
and Monday morning with Yizkor included in our
service on Monday. May all of our congregational
family have a happy and healthy Shavuot and a great
summer.

Our annual meeting was held on Sunday, April 10. The
members had a fine breakfast of bagels, bialys, cream cheese,
donuts and coffee. Once everyone had finished breakfast and
conversations, the meeting was opened.
Members of the present board, whose term ends on June
30, were discharged effective July 1. Gary Schreibman,
co-president, thanked all for their services to the club.
Not returning to the board are secretaries Gerson and Fran
Rapaport and director Sandy Fields.
The slate of nominees for the year July 1, 2016 through
June 30, 2017 was elected unanimously. The co-presidents
are Judith and Gary Schreibman; secretaries are Marilyn and

More than 40 members attended Shabbat on the Beach
at Boynton Beach Park on Friday, April 15. As in past years,
Cantor Mitch Martin played his keyboard and everybody
sang along to the various prayers.

I hope everyone has received
the May bulletin. It is my job, as
JUDITH SCHNEE
editor, to keep you informed of
all the happenings at Temple Beth Tikvah. I appreciate
and want to thank each and every contributor to this
endeavor. Thank you to Rabbi Shub; Cantor Grossman;

TEMPLE BETH TIKVAH
HOSTS ISRAEL TRIP
Temple Beth Tikvah is proud to
announce that it is hosting an Israel trip led
by Rabbi Shub and
conducted by Israel
Celebration Tours.
Transportation
to and from the
Temple is included. The departure date is
November 30 and return date is December
13, 2016.
The trip includes air fare, six nights
in Jerusalem, three nights in Sfat and one
night in Tel Aviv.
That means eleven nights hotel
accommodations with breakfast included,
lunch at an Army base, nine dinners, a fulltime English-speaking guide (including
both Shabbatot), our own bus with driver,
and numerous extras at a very reasonable
price, including entrance fees at all the
scheduled venues
This trip has been designed to please
those who have been to Israel before,
but also for those who have never been
there.

Religious School and youth news
I know that I wrote about our Immigration Experience in
my last report, but I wanted to share pictures and more from
the event. We had over 60 students and 50 parents come by
to share the experience with us. I want to personally thank all
of our congregants and clergy who came by to lend support,
help bake challah, act as doctors, nurses, and so much more.
You came dressed for the part and truly showed our parents
and students how much you support our Religious School. It
truly meant a lot to me as we all worked very hard to make
this a wonderful learning experience for all who participated.
Please enjoy the pictures below and relive this experience
through our lenses.
Our Model Seder was a wonderful program led by our
fifth grade students and supported by all of our students.
Many of our parents came by to watch and participate in
this annual event. Of course, Passover at the TBT Religious
School is never complete without our annual chocolate Seder,
which I also discussed in my last report. Our confirmation
students led this fun event and I will share pictures of these at
a later date. This past week our confirmation students actually
had the opportunity to visit and “reap the benefits “from our
garden. They came out and were pleasantly surprised with
the growth and maturity of the herbs and vegetables they
planted a few months ago. We picked some of the herbs,
tasted our first tomato, and made pesto that we all shared
together. It was a great “ shehecheyanu” moment!
Our USY’ers and Kadimaniks also had a great month.
We had one of our eighth graders participate in a special
“Gesher” convention; which is a great opportunity to learn
all there is to know about USY and how to “cross the bridge”
into USY in a very easy transition. Four of our USY’ers
participated in Regional Convention held in Tampa. We
all had a wonderful time, participating in so much ruach,
learning, and of course visiting with old friends and making
new friends. The highlight of Regional Convention is the
senior program, where one of our USY’ers was able to
participate and “cross the bridge” from USY into college
life. It was an emotional but exciting program. In the
meantime, please enjoy these pictures from our Immigration
