Heinsburg Ditch Erosion Control Project Profile
EROSION & SEDIMENT CONTROL PROJECT PROFILE Heinsburg Ditch Erosion Control A long-term erosion control solution. LOCATION: Heinsburg, Alberta PRODUCT: North American Green Vmax3 P550®, North American Green ShoreMax™, and Nilex GeoRidge® PROJECT PARTNERS: Owner Alberta Transportation Consultant Alberta Transportation/Nilex Contractor Carillion Canada Completion Date July 2010 THE NILEX ADVANTAGE: Cost Savings Over $28,000 Carbon Emissions Reduced by 89% CO2 Saved 64.1 tonnes The Town of Heinsberg lies along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in East Central Alberta. Challenge A 220 m ditch along Highway 497 continued to erode more and more each year. Over time, the velocity of surface water run-off along the ditch caused deep gullies. Yearly repetitive maintenance was ineffective. Alberta Transportation required a more effective and long-term erosion control system. Solution Nilex recommended a long-term erosion control system that included the installation of VMax3 P550 turf reinforcement mat (TRM), ShoreMax soft revetment scour system, and Nilex’s GeoRidge check dams. Turf reinforcement mats provide long-term erosion protection along the ditch channel and the GeoRidge check dams assist in reducing water flow velocities and erosion, allowing for vegetation establishment. ShoreMax was installed around the culvert inlets and outlets to provide another layer of erosion protection from scouring. Together, this system provides long-term erosion protection and vegetation establishment to the ditch channel. Heinsburg Ditch Erosion Control Think Nilex Installation Nilex is committed to unearthing better results. Whether it’s for a civil, resource or environmental project, we offer the latest engineered and technically superior materials and techniques to save our customers time and money, and minimize the need to move or remove earth, and reduce the need for granular materials. The Vmax3 P550 turf reinforcement mat was installed the full length of the ditch. 45 cm (18 inch) rebar stakes anchored the mat and GeoRidge was installed every 3.3 m (11 feet) to dissipate the flow of water. With over 35 years experience, a long-standing commitment to the environment and highly qualified staff, Nilex delivers the products and technologies that give clients an economic advantage with environmental benefit. ShoreMax’s scour protection mats were installed at the inlet and outlet of each culvert. The flexible interlock system allows for easy installation in adverse conditions. Results This erosion control system provided a muchneeded permanent solution that requires little to no maintenance. By installing the Vmax3 P550 turf reinforcement mat, the client achieved a savings of over $28,000 versus traditional 300 mm riprap while reducing carbon emissions by 89% (64.1 tonnes of CO2 saved). nilex.com Rev. 02/2012
