Partnership Desk
Prizes & Fish Bowl
o you need a partner or assistance putting
a team together? Come to our Partnership
Desks. Unit 354 can proudly proclaim we
have assembled a great team to assist you.
The partnership chair, Anne Marie Harrington
and her many volunteers, will do their best to
accommodate your needs. We’ll service all
strats of players for all events.
You’ll need to fill out a Partnership Card with
some basic information such as your name,
number of masterpoints, bidding system
preference, and a number where you may be
reached. Remember, phone numbers you list
should be how to reach you at the tourney –
not your home number. We can’t always
guarantee a good “fit” for a partner, but we do
guarantee we’ll try our very best.
The Partnership Desk is located in the lobby
of the Mesa Convention Center for the 9:00
a.m, 1:00 p.m., & 7:00 p.m. games, as well as
the Sunday Swiss Teams. The Partnership
Desk for the 10:00 a.m. & 3:00 p.m. Senior
Pairs games is in the Marriott Ballroom.
They’re open one hour before game time.
ur Hospitality Committee has put together
a fabulous array of prizes. The host hotel,
the Phoenix Marriott Mesa, has also donated a
dinner to a lucky winning
player.
Be sure to try your luck at
guessing the number of
playing cards in the Fish
Bowl to win a daily prize
basket.
D
Registration Desk
lease be sure to visit the Registration Desk
in the lobby of the Mesa Convention
Center as soon as possible. Registering
entitles you to a welcome packet including
convention card holder and our traditional
Kokopelli decal. You will also find
information concerning local restaurants and
their discounts, plus upcoming sectionals and
regionals. Your registration card will be used
for door prize drawings. You don’t have to be
present to win, but be sure to claim your prize
at the Registration Desk by the end of the
tournament.
Please fill out the Registration Card: We
need to know where you are staying! If you
are staying at the Marriott, and didn’t book
through our group, please let us know.

activities must be picked up at the
Registration Desk. The desk is open one hour
before each session and closes 15 minutes
before each game.

The Why & How
of Lebensohl
By Ned Kohler 5 of 5
Lebensohl after Opener’s Reverse
After 1x - (P) - 1y - (P); 2z - (P) - where z is
higher ranking than x but lower ranking than
y. That means a reverse but not a jump shift.
1Ê - 1Í - 2Ì is a reverse and Lebensohl is on.
1Ê - 1Ì - 2Í is a jump shift and Lebensohl is
off. (Note, some people do play Lebensohl
after opener’s jump shift.)
Unlike after notrump interference, the 3Ê
relay is not absolute. Opener can reject the
relay if he is strong enough to want to play
game opposite a minimum 1-level response.
Re-bidding Responder’s Major at the 2
level is potentially weak (but unlimited) and
only promises 5. With 3 card support for
Responder’s M, Opener raises to 3M with a
minimum reverse, bids 4M or splinter’s if
possible with a game forcing reverse. With
the fourth suit stopped, Opener rebids 2NT
with a minimum reverse and 3NT with a
game forcing reverse.
Responder’s rebid of anything but 2 of
Responder’s M or 2NT is a game force.
Responder’s 2NT is a relay to 3Ê which may
be passed with a weak hand. Opener rebids
3Ê with a minimum reverse. If opener has a
game forcing reverse, he must break the relay
and rebid something other than 3Ê.
Responder’s jump rebid of 3M shows a
good 6 card suit with game forcing values.
2NT - 3Ê followed by a three of responder’s
major shows 6 card suit with game forcing
values but the suit is not god enough for an
immediate jump to the 3 level.
Holding enough values for game opposite a
minimum reverse with only 4 of his M and a
stop in the fourth suit, Responder has two
ways to bid 3NT. 3NT directly shows no
interest in slam opposite a minimum reverse.
2NT - 3Ê - 3NT shows a hand that would
have invited slam over a 3NT rebid by
opener but is no longer interested in slam.
2NT - 3NT - 4NT is a slam invitation.
