Eric Berson specializes in sculpting one-of-a-kind works
of art with his chainsaw using a variety of wood. An
Alaskan-born artist, Eric has been bringing joy to others
with his craft for 15 years. He was inspired when looking
at all the beetle-killed spruce on his property and decided
there was something special to come of it. And right he
was! 2015 will be Eric and Jennifer’s debut at Elk Camp
and Hunter & Outdoor Christmas and we can’t wait to
see what he plans to bring to the Ladies Luncheon

PROTECTING THE HAREM AND

WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS

These beautiful, original watercolors were painted by
Texas artist, Christopher St. Leger. A native of northwest
Indiana, now residing in Lockhart, Texas, Mr. St. Leger’s
works have been shown in galleries in Austin, Houston,
and New York City, and abroad in London, Frankfurt,
and Budapest. Much of the artist’s work has been
“urbanscapes,” a theme that explores city buildings,
streets, and alleyways. The skill and precision with which
he executes his work in watercolor is truly admirable.
Spontaneous splatters of paint accompany his choice of
palette, which ranges from soft pastels to bold, dominant
primary colors—all recurring themes in his works.
Expanding to wildlife, Mr. St. Leger was commissioned
to paint two watercolors, depicting the rutting season for
elk. The two bulls fighting, titled Protecting the Harem,
has become the image used on the label of the RMEF
Edition Rutting Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes
its debut this December in Las Vegas at the RMEF Hunter
& Outdoor Christmas Expo. Along with each beautiful
painting, Rutting Ridge Cellars has included six bottles
of their fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon. This Cabernet is
extraordinary in character, containing rich berry fruit with
oak and vanilla notes. A long, smooth toast is employed,
creating a medium-bodied creaminess with gentle tannins.
For every bottle sold, Rutting Ridge donates $3.00 to
benefit the ongoing wildlife and habitat conservation
efforts of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Bernie Adam was ranch raised in the great Sandhills of Nebraska. He was a rodeo
cowboy for the first 30 years of his life, or as he likes to put it, the first seven knee
surgeries. He competed at the National High School Finals, National College Finals,
and several State and Circuit finals. In 1992 he quit, took up tennis, and became
a USPTA tennis instructor. After four more knee surgeries and finally double knee
replacement, he decided there is more to do than beat his body up. Between
lessons and clinics, he began shopping for unique items to create things for the
house. Finally the hobby started becoming more of a business and Rustic Relics
was born. Audra, Bernie’s better half, a true Arizona native (a very rare person in
AZ) is responsible for selling at the shows and the great horn and

LABRADOR PUPPY

Lori and Roger Young, long-time friends and supporters
of RMEF, are returning to Elk Camp with an adorable lab
puppy! The litter arrived in September, and, by the time
Elk Camp arrives, this little darling will be housebroken,
crate-trained, microchipped, and dew-claws removed. The
puppy will have received all of it’s shots and will be ready
to fly. This puppy has excellent bloodlines and will make
a great hunter and a wonderful family member. Roger and
Lori have been raising quality Labrador retrievers for 20
years and have an excellent reputation for breeding quality
dogs. They are a small kennel, and they strive to produce
calm, intelligent dogs that are very trainable. Their dogs
can also be found working with Gallatin County Search
& Rescue and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Lori and

LIVING ON THE EDGE
BRONZE SCULPTURE
By Bruce Killen
Artist, outdoorsman, and conservationist Bruce Killen, died
in 2012 at the age of 74. Bruce was a renowned sculptor
and endeavored to give honor to the wildlife that inspired
him. Living life to the fullest, any day could find Bruce
riding one of his motorcycles down the back roads of
Southern Oregon, fishing along the Rogue, or enjoying the
wildlife with his grandsons. Bruce grew up in Minnesota,
joined the Navy serving as a medic and eventually moved
to Medford, Oregon with his wife Elaine where they raised
their three children. Bruce was a life member of several
conservation and hunting groups, including RMEF, often
donating his art for their fundraising auctions. He was an
advocate for protecting the Foothill Roosevelt elk herd,
which lived around his Dry Creek Road home. Bruce’s
spectacular wildlife sculptures can be found in homes and
museums across the world.

BRONZE SCULPTURE #30/62

Rip Caswell is well-known in the Pacific Northwest for his
bronze sculptures and monuments. Wild animals, religious
figures, Native American spirits, and busts of local
heroes renew his connection to innocence and simplicity.
Interested in art from an early age, Caswell began making
animals out of clay as a child then dove into taxidermy.
He studied under Bill Lancaster in Beavercreek, Oregon,
and they began working together in 1985. As a team,
Lancaster and Caswell won every award for taxidermy
in the Northwest Regional Taxidermy competition in
1998 and 1999. Caswell’s creative versatility led him
to bronze and the lost-wax process of casting in 1992,
which allowed him to maintain a high degree of detail
enhanced by patina coloring and a descriptive base that
placed his animals and figures in nature. His animals are
often in resting positions or at the peak of their animalistic
character in the wild—they stalk, wander, or nuzzle their
mates, the kings and queens of their domain. Caswell
extracts the purity of nature and represents his subjects’
souls, be it man or beast.

Born in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1946, Tom began his art
career at a very young age. Creating art projects was
always on the top of his list for things to do. In 1968 he
graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls
with a Bachelor's degree in Art Education and went on
to teach art at the Tomah, Wisconsin junior high school.
Tom also proudly served in the United States Air Force
where he received commendations for his service in
Vietnam and in Texas. In 1976, Tom moved to Mesa,
Arizona, where he opened a teaching art studio and
frame shop. He is known for his contributions, through
his painting, to numerous wildlife conservation groups
such as RMEF, Ducks Unlimited, The National Wild
Turkey Federation and Pheasants Forever. Tom now lives
in northern Minnesota where he continues to actively
pursue his painting career.

from a six foot wide valley oak that is estimated to have been over 300 years old.
The drought in central California has been blamed for the loss of this massive tree
and thousands of other oaks like this one. Located in the small town of Springville,
California, BJ is blessed to be able to work some of the largest trees in the world,
like the giant sequoia redwoods. He creates each and every unique piece from
beginning to end—from harvesting the timber to milling it into lumber, drying the

limited-edition artist proof signed by Gary Swanson and
features 54 plates of Gary’s wildlife prints. The book is

condition. Gary Swanson (d. 1942-2010) received many
honors and awards and had a time-honored method of oil
painting on linen canvas with a technique mastered over
years of study. He started out working as a taxidermist,
a museum curator, a conservationist and finally as an
artist. For Gary, the freedom, power and romance of the
outdoors were a vital part of his creative process. The
authentic and often romantic nature of his realism is what
drove him to capture these rare and precious moments on
canvas and his works to be remembered forever.

NAVAJO BRACELET

This exquisite bracelet, signed by the designer, is a
classic example of the southwestern style of the Navajo
and Pueblo Indians. This vintage piece came from
the collection of Charlotte Eldridge, a well-known TV
personality in Phoenix, Arizona in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
She was tireless in her efforts to help the Arizona Indians
and revered for her part in establishing the Indian
Center in Phoenix. This bracelet was a gift to her. The
65-year-old bracelet includes 82 “spiderweb” turquoise
stones. “Spiderweb” turquoise is rare and contains a
matrix in thin, delicate, web-like patterns across the face
of the gemstone.Charlotte’s daughter, Alice, is honored to
fully donate this rare piece to RMEF to support wildlife.

NORTH FORK ELK PHOTO

This amazing photo was taken by Joe Baugher, a school bus driver in Wapiti, Wyoming.
He took the picture during September 2013 on the North Fork about two miles above
the Gibbs Bridge on the Shoshone river east of Cody, Wyoming. He actually took three
photos of the scene and then stitched the image back together. Those school bus drivers
sure have a lot of talent! How many bulls can you count in this one scene? This is an
amazing photo anyone would be lucky to have in their home or office.

TY MURRAY TRIBUTE RIFLE #59/500

This Winchester Model 94 was created to honor Ty Murray,
rodeo’s living legend. A seven-time world champion,
all-around cowboy, Ty Murray competed in all three,
rough stock events—bareback riding, saddle bronc and
bull riding. He may well be the greatest rider of all time.
There were only 500 of these 30-30s created. The left side
of the receiver features a stunning portrait of Ty Murray
meticulously etched in gold and blue, framed in a nickel
shield flanked by scenes of Ty doing what he did best –
bull and saddle bronc riding. Nickel scrollwork surrounds
the images. The right side of the receiver features a gold
shield recognizing Ty as a seven-time world champion allaround cowboy, plus a scene of Ty bareback riding. The
lever is nickel and blued and features the Ty Murray logo.
The barrel bands are hand-polished and finished in nickel.

are favorite bronzes from RMEF’s banquet program. Jack
is another favorite bronze artist in the RMEF art family.
Born and raised in Great Falls, Montana, his interest in
art began at an early age with a visit to the C.M. Russell
Museum. After receiving a degree in Fine Art from
Montana State University, Jack went on to co-found
Kalispell Art Casting in 1978, now one of the largest
art-casting foundries in the West. Jack’s sculptures exude
both emotion and interest through his use of design,
composition and texture. Now semi-retired, Jack spends
his time between Montana where he sculpts, and
Mexico where he and his wife Sydney Anne sail their
40’ sailboat, Tambourine.

WALL CREEK MULE DEER ANTLER CHANDELIER
From Wall Creek Acquisition
This incredible chandelier hung in a house that RMEF acquired in the Wall Creek
Acquisition. The land is being reclaimed and the huge house was moved but
we saved the chandelier specifically to share some conservation history with Elk
Camp! The chandelier is 55” x 55”. The Wall Creek Acquisition includes 631 acres
of vital elk winter range in the Madison Valley of southwestern Montana adjacent to
the 7,067-acre Madison-Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area. The entire southern
edge of this property borders this area, which provides crucial winter range for
2,000 elk as well as hundreds of mule deer and pronghorn antelope. The east edge
borders Bureau of Land Management land that runs clear to the Madison River.

This is a true wilderness backpack hunt with a chance to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to hunt these animals out of a number of backpack spike camps. You
could get the chance to join a small hunting group of dedicated New Zealand wapiti
hunters. This animal is unique to New Zealand and is a cross between a Rocky
Mountain elk and a red stag. This is one of the only places in the world where this
type of animal exists and can be hunted. Fiordland is the most remote part of New
Zealand and offers what master-guide/outfitter Phil Wilson with 35 years guiding
experience, considers to be the toughest hunt in the world. At times, this is a very
physically challenging hunt that can seem like everything is against you, but this
is what makes it unique. Very few, if any, Americans have ever taken a true, freerange bull out of Fiordland, but the bulls and stags are there. The success rate is
50%. The elevation is sea level to 4,000 feet “straight up” with rainfall of 200-400

The Jack Creek Preserve is a 5,000-acre ranch surrounded by the Lee Metcalf
Wilderness. In 2011 a 342-point bull was taken by a bow hunter, and a bull scoring
384-3/8 was taken by a rifle hunter. Accommodations are in one of three cabins;
two are wonderfully rustic with wood-burning heat, propane stoves, comfortable
bunk beds and an outhouse (no running water). The third cabin is a real luxury
camp with all the amenities, hot and cold running water, an indoor bathroom and a
propane refrigerator. All three cabins are in the middle of elk habitat, yet accessible
by 4WD. Hunters supply their own food. The ranch will assist with field dressing
and hauling your elk to town. The Jack Creek Preserve Foundation has contributed

far from the pressure of other hunters. They bait an area over 430 square miles to
spread out harvest and reach the highest amount of bears. Baits are set up in wellscouted, proven locations. They provide all transportation to and from stands as well
as preparation of your trophy. They use primarily ladder-type stands and generally
