Welcome to my world.
Welcome to the world of Speake-Marin.
Speake-Marin timepieces share a unique contemporary
style and design. Yet, with all my creations there is
also a clear connection to traditional watchmaking of
the early 20th century and before.
My timepieces are a representation of myself as a
watchmaker, reinventing horology in my own way. Though
I’m very much living in the 21st century, my horological
influences date from the past.
Speake-Marin is living, breathing watchmaking and my
watches are modern classics, timepieces that will truly
endure.

HISTORY
of Speake-Marin
Speake-Marin was founded in Switzerland in 2002 by English
watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin. Peter’s skill and vision have ensured
that Speake-Marin’s timepieces are as technically superlative as they
are aesthetically distinctive.
After graduating as a watchmaker in London, Peter
went to Switzerland to further his knowledge of
horological complications at WOSTEP, the Swiss watch
training and education school in Neuchâtel. He returned
to London to set up and manage the watch restoration
department of Somlo Antiques in Piccadilly and, after
seven years restoring vintage timepieces, returned to
Switzerland in 1996 before establishing his own atelier
near Lake Geneva at the turn of the millennium.

Foundation
Pocket Watch
The first timepiece to bear the Speake-Marin name was a tourbillon pocket watch that Peter christened his ‘Foundation Watch’. The basic case design is influenced by early marine chronometers,
while the shape of its hands, fluted crown, topping-tool motif of the tourbillon cage and detailed
hand-engraving are all features that grace the Speake-Marin collection today.
11
Timepieces
Speake-Marin timepieces are instantly recognisable
thanks in no small part to their now iconic Piccadilly
case. Named after Peter’s formative time in antique
restoration in Piccadilly, London, the case features
distinctive lugs and fluted crown. .
The Speake-Marin collection has grown to encompass
complications including jumping hours, perpetual calendars,
tourbillons and minute repeaters, with fired-enamel, semiskeletonised, hand-engraved, and multi-level dials.
Spirit Collection
The Speake-Marin Spirit inhabits a masculine world
inspired by the British military. Dress code can be
casual, but courage is a must. With the Spirit, you
can practically smell the heady blend of high-octane
aviation fuel and the sweat of nervous anticipation.
Models in the Spirit collection are robust in construction
– and attitude – and feature exceptional legibility, both
day and night. Automatic winding and/or long power
reserves ensure that there is more than enough energy
on tap for even the most testing of conditions.
While the Spirit exudes a casual aura, its culture
and class can’t help but shine through, and it looks
just as good with a flight suit as with formal attire.
“Fight, Love & persevere”
isn’t just the Spirit motto – it’s a way of life.

J-Class Collection
After the exhilaration of a white-knuckle ride on
a finely-tuned racing yacht – heeling on a broad
reach with its rail near the ocean and spray cutting
the air – comes the yacht club, replete with rich
wood-panelled walls and vintage navigation
instruments. And it is in the rarefied ambience of
the club that the high-class pedigree of the SpeakeMarin J-Class timepieces comes into its own.
The yachting J-Class has its origins in the oldest
sporting race in the world, the America’s Cup. J
Class yachts exude timeless elegance, sophistication
and complexity in equal measure, as do the SpeakeMarin timepieces in this highly prestigious collection.
Elegance, sophistication and complexity are no
longer terms exclusive to the sea – the wrist and the
warm, welcoming atmosphere of the gentlemen’s
club are now also the natural home of the J-Class.

Cabinet Des Mystères
Cast your mind back to the late 19th century and a book-lined room of a
famous gentlemen’s club in London, filled to the brim with all manner of
exotic objects, animals and scientific instruments from all over the world.
The rich smell of leather-bound books blends
with smoke rising from a pipe on the desk;
stuffed animals pay testament to a natural
philosopher’s recent voyage to newly discovered
lands; and incomprehensible devices hint at
unimaginable possibilities.
The diverse contents of the room provide answers
to most of the outside world’s conundrums,
enigmas and riddles. However, there was one
place that guarded its secrets very closely:
Cabinet des Mystères.
Mechanical Art
Mechanical timepieces are usually very logical
instruments. Very carefully calculated power trains, gear ratios and metallurgy are the
natural realm of mathematicians, engineers
and watchmakers; people for whom form follows function as day follows night, and the two
hands of a watch indicate hours and minutes.
However, dispensing with the constraints of
cold logic allows much more space for art to
flourish and it’s here you will find the SpeakeMarin Mechanical Art collection. These models
will cause you to think, feel and reflect.

Fine Art Pieces
Speake-Marin wristwatches can serve as the
perfect canvas for Peter Speake-Marin and invited
artists to demonstrate the full extent of their craft
and their unbounded imaginations.
Speake-Marin’s Fine Art Pieces harness various
artistic disciplines to create cut-out, sculpted,
hand-engraved, chemically etched and maki-e
lacquered dials as well as gem-set cases. A work
of art on your wrist.

Savoir-faire
...
Speake-Marin uses time-honoured artistic techniques harnessing
the best of traditional craftsmanship – heat-blued steel hands;
pure white enamel dials; hand-engraved dials and movements;
finely finished movements and diamond-set cases – as well as
the latest horological technologies including innovative chemical
etching to engrave dials or cutting-edge techniques creating onepiece dials from resin, lacquer and Super-LumiNova.
Speake-Marin is a byword for high-end
horological savoir-faire.
Hand engraved SM2 movement
Foundation Watch tourbillon cage
59
For Speake-Marin’s enamel dials, both sides of a
copper dial base are enamelled to ensure an even
tension within the construction of the material. Enamel
powder (essentially crushed glass) is applied manually
and heated in an oven at over 800°C. The process is
repeated many times to build up a consistent colour.
Before a final polishing stage, Roman numerals are printed
in black enamel with a melting point lower than the white
enamel so that the two colours do not mix. These fine
numerals are highly legible yet manage to avoid dominating
the dial – a subtle but significant detail highlighting the
brilliance of the otherwise pristine white dial
